Friday- nice to see it back again. It was foggy beyond belief yesterday, and continues today.

Last night's supper of Chinese food from the Octagon was pretty good - I only wish they hadn't packaged the general tso's tofu in such a way that I got it all over my work pants and jacket while driving home.

Back was tweaking up something fierce - I wonder if the barometric pressure was a factor, or all that fog?

BHK is using her super legal-powers to help with the condo issues - looks like we might get this thing ironed out after all!

While she looked up condo legal-ese, I did some back stretches,  overdue computer stuff, and checked out the demo of Left4Dead... that's a beautiful game right there. The artwork is pretty top notch, and I really like the team play aspect. That'll probably be my next purchase afte rI swim through Fallout 3 some more. Maybe someday I'll get around to finishing the later episodes of HL2.

In other gaming news, BHK picked me up a new gaming joystick via freecycle. Can't beat free hardware!

This weekend, we are likely to skip JohnCon, and instead go to Geppi's Entertainment Museum. (I wonder if my metropass will count for $2 OFF GO GREEN! Show your ticket stub for public transportation for that day and receive $2 off admission to Geppi’s Entertainment Museum.)

Lunch today of "chicken" nuggets and mac&cheese was dang tasty. perfect for a cool, misty day

Got off work, and the Element has recovered from the hit we took from the deer. It still smells a bit of paint, but looks good as new.

Traffic was HORRID today. It took us forever to get anywhere!

BHK, Larry, Chris and I went to Selby - I guess the owners are looking to retire, sadly. I guess we had better get the pizza while we can!

[Error: unknown template qotd] Well - keeping it to the mortal realm ("God reading the bible" would surely destroy me - the True Voice being is too pure and too powerful to be heard by sinners, thus, instant death.)

Stepping to mortal flesh, I'd love to see the Sermon on the Mount, even though that wasn't originally delivered (if it was ever actually performed) as Author to Reader. I don't speak or comprehend aramaic, but to just be there at the original would be beyond amazing.

Most of the literary classics were Greek, Latin, French and German. Even Borges nifty stuff is Spanish.

Perhaps it's best to fade to more contemporary and in my native tongue.

I'd likely go for Mark Twain, as long as I could get a beer with him while he pontificated on his choice of writing.

Biblical Side note - The highest of the Archangels (and therefore the highest of the Seraphim), the Metatron acts as the voice of God and occupies the throne next to the Divine Throne of the Almighty.

Derived from the Latin Metator, Metatron can be translated as "guide" or "measurer".

Some claim the Metatron was the prophet that was turned into an angel, taken to heaven, and given 36 pairs of wings. Some believe him to be the angel that led the Hebrews from Egypt. A few theologians call Metatron "Lesser YHWH" which stands for the most sacred and unpronounceable name of God in Hebrew (well, the YHWH part anyway). Metatron is also said to be the tallest of the angels from 13 to 18 feet depending on the source, about 2 to 3 times the height of a normal man. For reference, remember that Goliath is believed to have been about 9 feet tall.

The Metatron was thought to have many names. Yahoel, Yofiel, Surya, and Lad are just a few of his 72 other names. Some believe that he carries the Jews prayers through 900 levels of heaven to God.

It is Metatron's task to sustain mankind (as seen in Kevin Smith's Dogma, he interacts with the humans to prevent their demise). He has been known as the link between the human and the divine. After arriving in heaven he was transformed into a spirit of fire and equipped with 36 pairs of wings. In addition, he has countless eyes with which he sees over all the earth. He resides in the 7th heaven and, when he feels like it, appears as a pillar of fire (as the one in Exodus which handed down the ten commandments to Moses). He is the supreme angel of death. God tells him who is to die, he then tells angels below him to take care of the gruesome task.

Metatron is said to be the highest of all the angels, more so even than Michael or Gabriel. The burning bush, pillars of fire, and any other time a human thought he was talking to God, he was actually talking to Metatron (except those sort who are actually just talking to themselves - who can say?)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BHK!!

Allison's B'day! I buttered her nose while she was distracted by playing audiosurf. (Got it for $5 this last weekend.) I was a little disappointed that my mp3 of Christopher Walken reciting Poe's "The Raven" was so linear.

As a gift / party-favor to all for BHK's day - A GAZILLION Free to print and play games.

Oh BGG, how I thank the Internets you're there.

If you're not into free games, (or even if you are, dear journal) here's a stop-motion zombie movie called Chainsaw Maid. Best zombie film this year. (from the same people who did Bloody Date )

No Lebanese Taverna Tonight - Falafel time must wait - instead we hit Gallo's Deli - food is still pretty good. Not as superior as Selby, but only a block or two from the house. BHK opened the remainder for her loot tonight.

I got her an assortment of little trinket-treats - My faves were earring-studs in the style of mexican sugar skulls and a bottlecap pin with a pirate inside saying ARG in letter beads.... but I'm partial to things skully. I need to take a picture of BHK's loot pile - other items were a lovey charm, a ouija board pin, and a horde of coupons to do / get things, from getting me in a good mood to a movie night with no snarky comments. (2 nights, if neither are Jane Austen-related).

Today seemed both brief and extended at the same time, somehow.

Took off early this morning to snag a few allergy shots, and then we swung by Maerten's to check out plans for BHK's ring. I was going to have it be a surprise, but when design considerations came up, I opted for her input... she's the one that'll be wearing it after all.

I wonder how many people buy an engagement ring for their spouse, 14 months after the wedding day?

We hashed out a few designs with Heather, and I think that the one that was finalized will be lovely. I'm looking forward to the CAD images sometime this week before the casting. If this one works out well, I think a Mexican Day of the Dead "skull ring" could be next on the list.

Later, we went to the local farm grocer, grabbed lunch and a broad assortment of candy-type stuff to put in X-mas stockings.

The chocolate drops intended for Larry were not destined to survive.

They were, however, delicious. He'll get other candy, love it and never be the wiser. We're not bad people.

The in-laws had a little trouble finding the train store, so we met with them for a little bit... Larry and I talked trains while BHK and Chris went to the kids bookstore and got a little treat or two for Em and maybe Bugah.

We parted company - BHK got a flash of brilliance - and we stopped and got the final piece of Chris's prezzie.... not mentioned in case she's reading this. (I don't think she is, but better safe than sorry.)

Following that, we hit our favorite friendly neighborhood gaming store, Aardvark's - got some goodies for Louise, Cathy and Dave. Added bonus, Mike gave us the Fluxx Party pack and a Larry the Zombie to go with our Looney Labs purchases. Score! I've been wanting a radioactive potato, and now we have two! (Larry {the card, not the father-in-law} is the zombie equivalent.)

I think we've got everyone covered for presents except for Adam and Matt. That shouldn't be too traumatic.

I ran out of juice by the end of the day... not sure where all my energy went, unless it was the sugar blues post about 1000 chocolate drops.

Maybe it's time to go back to early-morning posts. We'll see how writing on the train works for longer pieces.

Met one of the bigwigs at the company today... he's got a computer background, too. I'm hoping that will mean expressing system needs will be simpler. I think that's likely to be the case.

I am admittedly curious about what BHK is getting me for Christmas. She's dropped a few hints, all of them cryptic. Just the way I like it. It'll be fun to puzzle things out for the next couple of weeks until I can discover what they are.

Clues are :

One comes with a chopstick
One was found in our yard.
One is being co-purchased with the the in-laws.

All are stumpers. I can venture a guess or two on item 3, but they'd be pure vapor.

In the mode of BHK, I am obligated to remind my dear journal that Masterpiece Theatre is going hog wild for Jane Austen next year. Another sign that my darling wife is a girly-girl.

When I got home tonight, BHK surprised me with veggie bratwurst with caramelized onions and potato pancakes. I am a lucky, spoiled man. We watched Fido while we ate... not a bad movie, not fantastic. Interesting in parts, and I'm more than a little amazed that it got made. Billy Connelly in a "Zombie as Lassie" film struck me as odd when I first saw the trailer... apparently Lionsgate is really running with the Zombie theme if the other trailers on the same DVD are any indication. Rave of the Living Dead ? Drugs that make ravers into zombies? The remake of night of the Living dead in 3d didn't really grab me, either.

After Dinner was done, BHK gabbed with Misti for a bit on the phone... I took the opportunity to start stringing a few lights on the tree.. it's coming together nicely.

Post Movie, we played Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games. I think I was too tired to play well... after doing a little gymnastics, javelin and hammer toss, it's time for bed.

A quick peek of my office, taken with my phone's camera this morning - not seen, the bright moon and Venus, first thing upon leaving the house this morning. Brilliant. Wave hi to DC!

1105071004.jpg

Lunch of leftover Chinese food was almost as good as lunch of leftover BHK casserole... but not quite. Dang tasty, anyhow.

Strange... we had trick or treaters the day after Halloween, and were only too happy to give our crusty old candies that didn't make the grade the night prior. I thought it was a fairly unique situation, but it seems that it's not an isolated incident. Note - we gave cute little kids the good stuff - chocolate, and smarties for Daniel (as he's lactose intolerant), but any teens that came by without costumes got nasty stale necco wafers and clove candies that we hadn't eaten in about a year.

Side note... do I really have to link to what trick or treaters or Halloween is? I doubt it.

We don't have much candy left at the house, but gals at work still have huge bowls set out. It's a real challenge not to grab a kit-kat when it's right in my flight path.

I wonder how old is the "right" age to stop trick or treating... I always figured the cutoff was age 12, but maybe that was just me.

BHK had a meeting with the city, and afterward, we met at Thursday's with the in-laws for a late supper.

Zombie Picture taken on the metro a few days back... good ol' Halloween.

Considering that a Ford Model-T got as good or better mileage than most of today's U.S. automobiles, I guess it's not suprising that Henry Ford was, according to this 1934 profile, well ahead of the game in biofuels and bioplastics:

Science is discovering means of transforming products of the farm into materials for manufacture. Through his experimental farms, Henry Ford now successfully converts the common soy bean into automobile parts and an oil which makes up 30 per cent of the Ford car finish.

Mr. Ford declares that this plastic industry, this evolution of industrial agriculture, still is in its infancy and that its possibilities and opportunities are limitless. As an example, he points out that his laboratories have produced from the soy bean a tough, hard, yet inexpensive material which stands a pressure of 9,000 pounds without breaking... Ford and his chemists envision the time when automobile bodies, houses, skyscrapers and even great monuments may be fabricated from the soy bean.

Then again: maybe biofuels aren't such a good idea, anyway.

While Larry's at Homecoming, Chris is going with BHK and me to a mineral and gem seminar / dinner up the street. Maerten's loves Both the girls to death, and we get invites to all kinds of things like that.

I'm digging Little People- A tiny Street Art Project. Makes me want to keep my eyes extra open!

Watching the original (black and white, not the colorized fouling) Night of the Living Dead on the PSP while riding the train into work is rewarding... especially when the "hands in the windows" scene starts while you're in a tunnel, and the train stops.. and all the cabin's lights go out for about 10 seconds before starting back up again. Good timing. I'm just glad I didn't have Jacob's Ladder in there. Want to watch Night for free? It's in the public domain you can view it there or download it - or just see it in 30 seconds, reenacted by bunnies.

Other classics that are free and legal to download and/or view online - Last Man on Earth for horror, or Suddenly for a bit of Noir.

We never did make it to Aardvark to pick up our Zombie Fluxx! We'll have to do that sometime this week - must get it before Halloween! (only 10 more days!)

We have started eating the treats from our Halloween "Advent Calender" - counts down from 13 days. so far we've had two gummi eyeballs and a gummi skull.

Rather than journey south to Solomon's, BHK and I headed out to another corn maze at greenstreet gardens. Had a haunted hayride through the back 40 to the cornfield - I think the hayride was scarier than the corn.... mostly due to the bone-jarring bumps and slides around the road in an unsecured wagon!

Bugah got Mario Strikers... we may have to get a copy, to play with him online. Probably rent it first, to make sure it isn't a bum title, but the reviews are generally good.

Speaking of Mario, BHK and I thought it'd be fun to have Super Mario Brothers on the wii... 500 points later, there we go. She's more skilled than I am - but I'm catching up. I hadn't played it for about 15-18 years, while she has fairly recently.

more pictures as the uploader works - most are from homestead gardens harvest festival and store. I dig the hillbilly skeleton band. Darth Vader nutcracker for christmas? kind of keen.

No Zombie Fluxx yet! ack! We'll be picking it up next weekend, hopefully. I'd like to have it in time for Halloween!

Went grocery shopping and then to get a Wii, but they were sold out - I nearly picked up a copy of Portal to tide me over, and may next time if the Wii isn't in stock- I hadn't seen any portal reviews on the new Orange box (Half-Life2 Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 (multi player), and Portal, plus previous releases of HL2 and HL2:episode one) I think it'll be worth picking up, possibly just for portal alone - TF2 looks pretty fun as well - I really like the "Incredibles meets First Person Shooter" school of art. I'll likely download it from Steam rather than pay for it at Target, unless the price is significantly different.

Post-shopping, we swung by the in-laws to watch The Natural with them and Louise. Not a bad movie... not as good as I remembered it, but maybe I was tired, too.

We went home, went up to our "treehouse" for a late supper of leftover Chinese food for me, and fresh cheddar on whole wheat crackers for BHK - watched the first episode of Journeyman - slow rolling but got better at the end. Quantum Leap redux - seemingly uncontrolled time travel, following a person to set things right, can bring items back and forth through time. He also seems to return to his home time, unlike Sam.

We also watched the Simpsons - corn maze / police dog episode. Poor to fair writing. I think the best part of the treehouse is just curling up with BHK and the boys for solid snuggles and comfort - especially nice at the end of the day.

It's a good thing I gobbled up what I did - our fridge is now officially *full*. I don't think anything else could be put in there, without knocking something over.

I wish I had Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic's stretchy abilities... I really don't like running up and down stairs to the treehouse with stuff or just to see what's going on once I'm settled in and comfy.

Hm... Archie McPhee has some nifty zombie toys. I wonder how they'd look on my desk at work? I wonder what other folks would think?

Tigger gaining weight - put her on diet kitty food... I wonder if she thinks that she needs to stock up, in case of being on her own again? She's not as svelte as she used to be. I think Newt and Pye need to visit her, and give her a running around the house partner or two.

I was creaky this weekend, but am feeling better this evening. A severe case of stumble-thumbosis overcame me this weekend, possibly due to poor sleep on Saturday? Well rested today, and things seem much more in control.

We opened up the pickles ! While a trifle mushy, they aren't nearly as over-spicy as I'd feared. I wonder how Miz Pix is doing, speaking of pickles?

Final counts on the 2007 summer Icehouse game competition are in - Pylon , Subdivision and Zamboni Wars won the challenge. I'm surprised that Penguin Soccer didn't do better. All the victors have valid games, but PS just had a fun theme and a reasonable set of rules, especially the 2-player option. I think that it seemed a little skewed, given that they didn't penalise missing entries.

So.. talk like a pirate day again? Bleh. How about my suggestion from last year? Talk like a Ninja day and for everyone to not say *anything* - especially meme related for a day. (Myself included.)

LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Some gruesome news:

Random Scotto factoid - I have always possessed an odd fondness for windmills. When I see them in movies, or as cookies, it just makes me happy... especially the old-style 4-sailed sorts, though the weird farm-propeller ones are also keen. Long before I ever read Don Quixote de la Mancha.

I like water-driven mills too, for that matter.

Nice to be relieved of on-call by EN yesterday.... I really prefer to have my weekend to myself, if it can be helped. Lovely rain all day Sunday, and I didn't do much in way of walkies, due to the foot boo-boo.

Feeling nostalgic for the mid-late 70s... Remembering imprints from the first decade of life, or thereabouts. Sort of funny...so many of folks I know and talk to regularly weren't even protein yet in 1975. Oh, for the good ol' days of eating Cap'n Crunch in front of the boob tube watching cartoons or whatnot before the sun has even come up, without a care in the world. Bro still just about 2 years old or so... My Dad about a decade younger than I am now, Momster even younger than that. Only responsibilities are not to wake anybody up.. maybe do a little coloring, or read a book about dinosaurs with word searches and connect the dots at the end of each chapter.

Even as a munchkin, I had to have mixed media piped into my skull... tv, reading, writing, coloring, action figures (or tiny ones, like army men/cowboys and indians cast in plastic).. usually all at the same time. I'm the only person I know that drew crayoned outlines on paper of my GI Joe and Hulk Dolls. Not that I was playing coroner, or anything. I just liked filling in the silhouettes in different poses as a kind of multicolored version of Hiroshima shadows, usually in multiple overlays.

I still remember that Hulk doll with the torn purple pants and the left leg repaired with a nut and bolt across the knee by my dad. More flashback-type stuff from that period.

From ZDNet:

The U.S. House of Representatives definitively rejected the concept of Net neutrality on Thursday, dealing a bitter blow to Internet companies like Amazon.com, eBay and Google that had engaged in a last-minute lobbying campaign to support it.

[livejournal.com profile] juliabee put me onto heifer.org - Nifty sounding group to help teach folks self-reliance.

Heifer's mission is to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth and they do that by working with communities. Heifer provides families with training and a livestock gift. The family then has hope for a sustainable future and they in turn become donors by passing on the gift of the animal's offspring to another family in need. Take a look at this video to learn more about this organization that helps families all over the world.

Random Scotto factoid - I like the Smothers Brothers.

Moment of Lyric - (video)blondie_heart_of_glass

Once I had a love and it was a gas, soon turned out had a heart of glass.
Seemed like the real thing, only to find mucho mistrust.
Love's gone behind.

Once I had a love and it was divine.
Soon found out I was losing my mind.
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind.
Mucho mistrust.
Love's gone behind.

In between "what I find is pleasing" and "I'm feeling fine", love is so confusing.
It's no peace of mind if I fear I'm losing you.
It's just no good, you teasing like you do.

Once I had a love and it was a gas, soon turned out had a heart of glass.
Seemed like the real thing, only to find mucho mistrust.
Love's gone behind.

Lost inside adorable illusion and I cannot hide.
I'm the one you're using please don't push me aside.
We could make it cruising, yeah.

Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light
Ooh ooh ooh whoa x4

Once I had a love and it was a gas, soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find mucho mistrust.
Love's gone behind.

Happy 6th birthday, dear journal!

Went Clothes shopping yesterday, and got some pretty snazzy duds (if I do say so m'self), most notable was a fresh pair of walking sneakers, and some boxer-briefs. I've never had this type of strange hybrid undies before, and so far, they're quite comfy. Not sure if I prefer 'em to regular boxers, yet.

Much like that first entry, I don't have much to say, at the moment. I'm dashing out the door, and running wicked late. More ot follow this evening, I imagine.

Have a wonderful day, dear journal.

Pretty proud of the company's track record the last week or so... we went from 143 to 151 successful recoveries over the course of 7 days. That kind of bog of paperwork, I can cope with.

Moment of Lyric - mp3

I certainly haven't been shopping for any new shoes
And I certainly haven't been spreading myself around
I still only travel by foot and by foot it's a slow climb
But I'm good at being uncomfortable so I can't stop changing all the time

I noticed that my opponent is always on the go
And won't go slow so as not to focus and I notice
He'll hitch a ride with any guide as long as they go fast from whence he came
But he's no good at being uncomfortable so he can't stop staying exactly the
same

If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can't help it the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me or treat me mean
I'll make the most of it I'm an extraordinary machine

New Dr. Who was ok.. I liked the semi-zombie goodness despite the weak ending, but I look more forward to next week's episode... Werewolves and Queen Victoria!

Secret Wars Re-Enactment Society - Well, it makes as much sense as those Civil War guys.

Aw, phooey... Monday again, eh? Weekend evaporated like fog on a hot day. Had lunch with the Mom and her gang at Sweet Tomatoes, and came home to an overlong nap... Sunday was completely wiped off the map as a result. Danny tried to call me from the Atlanta arport, but both phones he was using were wrecked, microphone-wise. Good to know he made it in ok, however.

I'm not a big fan of recent SNL, but the video bits, and smigel's tv funhouse animation segments still can shock and awe a bit. Last weekend's "Disney Vault" bit was pretty awesomely horrid.

In my head during shower and shave this morning -

How do?xRABBIT-OF-SEVILLE
Welcome to my shop, let me cut your mop, let me shave your crop
Daintily, daintily
Hey you!
Don't look so perplexed, why must you be vexed, can't you see you're next
Yes you're next, you're so next
How about a nice close shave
Teach your whiskers to behave
Lots of lather lots of soap
Please hold still don't be a dope
Now we're ready for the scraping
There's no use to try escaping
Oh, wait until I get that rabbit
Yell & scream & rant & rave
It's no use you need a shave
(oh ouch ouch oh ouch oh oh ouch)
There, you're nice and clean
Although your face looks like it might have gone through a machine
What would you want with a rabbit
Can't you see that I'm much sweeter
I'm your little senorit-ar
You are my type of guy
Let me straighten your tie
And I shall dance for you
