BHK got me my own copy of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies via paperback swap! It's in great shape.

The day before yesterday, an investigator looking for evidence of the emerald ash borer in a neighbors white ash tree. Found a little article that makes it worth a look for me. (Stuck here for future reference) The researcher was telling BHK and me about a few prophylactic measures like a genetically engineered wasp, and assorted poisons.

As part of a national survey for the emerald ash borer, the Maryland Department of Agriculture will begin hanging 400 12" x 24" triangular purple insect traps in ash trees along roadsides from just east of Cumberland westward beginning in early April.  The purple traps, which are sticky and baited with a compound that simulates a distressed ash tree, are designed to attract the destructive emerald ash borer, should it be present. Residents should not be concerned if they see the traps and should not disturb them.  MDA will place some traps on private property. Property owners will be notified by letter in advance.  All traps should be in the trees through August and will be checked every two weeks.

To date in Maryland, the emerald ash borer has only been found in a small area of southern Prince George’s County where it was introduced illegally by a Michigan nurseryman in 2003.  The insect, an exotic pest from Asia, feeds on and kills ash trees in one to three years after infestation.

“Our challenge is to eradicate the emerald ash borer or at least keep it from spreading so we hope we don’t find any in these traps,” said Agriculture Roger Richardson.  “Since the insect can travel easily on firewood that might be moved from Prince George’s County and other states where it has been introduced, we are trapping along travel routes. In addition we are encouraging campers, hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts to buy their firewood at their destination rather than take it with them.”

The presence of the emerald ash borer typically goes undetected until the trees show symptoms of being infested – usually the upper third of a tree will thin and then die back. This is usually followed by a large number of shoots or branches arising below the dead portions of the trunk. Other symptoms of infestation include: D-shaped exit holes in the bark where adults emerge, vertical splits in the bark, and distinct serpentine-shaped tunnels beneath the bark in the cambium, where larvae effectively stop food and water movement in the tree, starving it to death.  The only way to eliminate the emerald ash borer is to cut down its food source, ash trees, as there is currently no known effective pesticide or other treatment.

For more information about the purple traps or to report signs of dying ash trees, contact the Maryland Department of Agriculture at 410-841-5920.

BHK made me a wonderful breakfast of veggie omelets and English muffin – nice dose of protein to begin the day solidly.

Bad news technology-wise… BHK’s laptop seems to have taken a nap from which it won’t awake. I suspect the internal power supply. Looking into cracking it open soon, if the alternate cable doesn’t fix her up.

Shadow of the Vampire this evening, while we strip the tree of it’s ornaments and lights – rather a counterpoint too last year’s Kolchak festival while putting on the goodies.

Started watching sanctuary tonight, but the allure of Big Kahuna took it over. We’ve made it to 94 of 99 levels complete, and all but one tropical fish unlocked.

Dinner of tasty twisty pasta and unchicken strips in a tomato-cream sauce, with lots of tasty garlic!

Janet sent me a pic of Danny from his Birthday on Los Olas – BHK thinks he looks cuter sans moustache.

We are officially heading to Florida via the Love cube on Tuesday, which means we'll be arriving sometime on Wednesday afternoon.

If anyone reading this message in a journal-bottle sees this, is between DC/Maryland and Key West, and wants to meet with BHK and I sometime over the next two weeks, please let us know! Newton and Pye won't be comind with us, the in-laws will be babysitting them closely while we're gone.

I've been out of sync in posting to my journal lately and writing in general. It figures, since I have a new writing group going via email. I am hoping that my tardiness doesn't slow down the project, especially since I'll be out of good communications for the next couple of weeks.

While I'm in Florida I'll be getting my Driver's License, so I may even be able to do some of the driving on the way back. It turns out that it's easier to take the test in Florida than to wait 3 years and do the rookie driving program in Maryland... especially since Florida doesn'tr want to send my expired license records to points North.

Additionally, we'll be reiviewing the condo for repairs and upgrades, before we get another tenant there, doing a little low-grade vacationingon the cheap, too.

Back is a bit more sore than yesterday, but I have been good about walking over an hour a day, every day. I can feel that some exess weight has come off already, and that's a good thing.

We went to "kids at the farm" day w/ jay, duncan, sean, and Jay's sister & nephew.

Jay's sister is basically Flip Wilson's Geraldine incarnate. I kid you not, dear journal.

After visiting the baby animals, we swung by the Lusby Mexico - the food there is still great, and the cost is cheap. Thank goodness for buy one/get one coupons! I suspect that Lusby's cook is a smidgen better than the closer one.

Info on conficker - more straightforward than a lot of the misinformation out there.

There's a ton of stories this morning about some bright flashes of light and booming noises coming from the skies over eastern Virginia, parts of Maryland and North Carolina. The Richmond Times Dispatch reports that the National Weather Service’s Wakefield station's phone was "ringing off the hook" last night after around 9:45 p.m., as residents frantically called in to report flashing, bright lights and in some places, an explosion-like sound. No immediate explanation came from the NWS, but a team is now investigating what might have caused the fiery flashes. WTOP has a report that suggests that the phenomenon was most likely a fireball, which can occur when a piece of meteor rock enters the Earth's atmosphere.

SWAT in Maryland update - via Cheye Calvo -

I am very pleased to announce that, on Saturday, the Maryland House of Delegates passed HB 1267, the SWAT team oversight legislation, by a 126-9 vote.  The bill will require law enforcement agencies with SWAT teams to report every six months to civilian authorities on the number, general location, purpose, authorization, and results of SWAT deployments.  It also directs the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention to analyze the information and issue an annual report on SWAT team deployments in the state.

The Senate passed a companion bill 43-0 on March 19.  In both cases, lawmakers took strong action following emotional testimony in committee by numerous victims of careless or inappropriate SWAT deployments.  The point was clearly made that what happened to my family was not an anomaly, nor is the problem limited to Prince George's County.
Differences between the two bills about whether to include a sunset provision and the start date of the legislation will need to be resolved in a conference committee over the next couple weeks before the General Assembly convenes.  However, it is looking quite likely that we will be able to send a bill requiring monitoring of SWAT team deployments to the Governor for his signature within the next few weeks.
The House of Delegates passed the legislation on Saturday, which happened to be my 38th birthday.  This is truly the best birthday present I could have asked for!

Bloody Fun Day is a strategic arcade game where players control the Reaper as he plows his way through little critters. Every time Death sticks his scythe into one of the creatures, he gains points but loses health. Destroying red creatures will bring his life back up.

Each set of creatures killed leave behind eggs which need to be left alone to hatch into even more critters. Building up points also gives Death special abilities which can be activated in order to grab even more points. It's all about bagging as many points as possible before you run out of life.

The game mechanics work really well and it's a very nice concept. There's a tutorial to get you going and a couple of game modes to choose from. Play it over at Kongregate. (via

1. I didn't own any jeans for over 20 years before I got married (Just khakis, and knee-shorts, etc). Now I own 3 pairs, and they're my favorite weekend clothes to wear.

2.I can't wear boots, ice skates, or any long-necked "slip your toe in" type of shoe, due to dropfoot and nerve damage on my left side.

3. Every time I see my wife or one of the kitties, I feel especially blessed.

4. I'm a limited vegetarian (I'll eat eggs and dairy... and crustaceans. - Nothing with less than 5 legs or more than 1 foot.)

5. I think that it is usually pretty easy to be kind to others, and it surprises me when some people seem to go out of their way to be cruel or hostile to strangers.

6. I doubt the existence of the supernatural, but love the stories.

7. I suspect there is life elsewhere in the universe, but doubt that it has visited Earth in a constructed craft.

8. I turn 40 this weekend. I alternately feel about 14 and about 60. So I guess I'm averaging about 37.

9. I have been run over by a car. I was riding a scooter, and the car was doing at least twice my speed. I really don't like being tailgated, and if I have my druthers, I would pull over to let them pass, or slow to a snail's crawl so they would do minimal damage to my vehicle. .

10. I haven't had a driver's license for about 15 years. (I plan to get one sometime in February, if I can get my Florida Records)

11. When I was about 15 I had a Ferret named Freya (renamed from Mitzi when I got her) - who was poisoned by someone in the neighborhood. I would still like to know why - she never hurt anybody, was friendly and fun-loving.

12. I suffer from Mama-bear levels of defensiveness of my loved ones. DO NOT HURT THEM, or I will maul you.

13. I've had problems with my back since I was 16 - ruptured a disc at the library of all places, moving books. I may need surgery again to repair ongoing damage there.

14. I have kept an online journal and website for over 10 years. (about the last 8 years can be found at )

15. I often overcompensate for being a big guy by being either too shy, or too friendly.

16. I love being able to peek in on the kitties remotely. ( and )

17. I'm a sucker for social gaming - board games, tabletop rpgs, cards, the Wii:whatever brings friends to meet face to face and have fun. (I'm really bad at Chess, but love playing it)

18. I believe in love, and think it's a greater motivator than fear, greed or pain. (and those things are amazing motivators)

19. I wish that I could help more people. I also wish that more people would try to help me, and each other, too.

21. If I were able, my phone would only accept incoming emergency calls. (I really don't like to use the phone much)

22. I love movies that incorporate at least a few of the following (some are redundant, and there are often exceptions): giant monsters, monkeys, witty dialogue, martial arts, comedy, are not a remake, 3-d glasses, horror, action, cartoons/CGI, fleshed-out characters and a well written story.

23. I think some things *are* black and white, but most are shades of gray.

25. I mentally render anthropomorphic almost everything I see.
