PROXYGAMBIT BETTER THAN PROXYHAM; TAKES COFFEE SHOP WIFI GLOBAL

Last weekend saw the announcement of ProxyHam, a device that anonymizes Internet activity by jumping on WiFi from public libraries and cafes over a 900MHz radio link. The project mysteriously disappeared and was stricken from the DEFCON schedule. No one knows why, but we spent some time speculating on that and on what hardware was actually used in the undisclosed build.

[Samy Kamkar] has just improved on the ProxyHam concept with ProxyGambit, a device that decouples your location from your IP address. But [Samy]’s build isn’t limited to ProxyHam’s claimed two-mile range. ProxyGambit can work anywhere on the planet over a 2G connection, or up to 10km (6 miles) away through a line-of-sight point to point wireless link.

The more GSM version of ProxyGambit uses two Adafruit FONA GSM breakout boards, two Arduinos, and two Raspberry Pis. The FONA board produces an outbound TCP connection over 2G. The Arduino serves as a serial connection over a reverse TCP tunnel and connects directly to the UART of a Raspberry Pi. The Pi is simply a network bridge at either end of the connection. By reverse tunneling a TCP connection through the ‘throwaway’ part of the build, [Samy] can get an Internet connection anywhere that has 2G service.

Although it’s just a proof of concept and should not be used by anyone who actually needs anonymity, the ProxyGambit does have a few advantages over the ProxyHam. It’s usable just about everywhere on the planet, and not just within two miles of the public WiFi access point. The source for ProxyGambit is also available, something that will never be said of the ProxyHam.

Ran a query to update about 20000 drivers for a client - amazing what a little snippet of code in the right place at the right time will do.

update driver_details set timestamp='2009-03-18 20:10:00'

WHERE

driver_details.MC_ACCT_NO =  '**account number**' AND

driver_details.DRV_TERMINATED_DT is null

That'll earmark all the active users for that group and send an update file to everybody. Hooray for Triggers !

Chasing potential errors after, now. Seems to be working within parameters, save for one not splitting properly.

I officially know more about Rsync than I ever thought I would. It's a mighty handy tool.

Long story short -
rsync is written as a replacement for rcp and scp. One of the earliest applications of rsync was to implement mirroring or backup for multiple Unix clients onto a central Unix server using rsync/ssh and standard Unix accounts. With a scheduling utility such as cron, one can even schedule automated encrypted rsync-based mirroring between multiple host computers and a central server.

Currently doing a master <-> master -> offisite slave config.

Also set up a sql-based login system for both the primary and backup servers for ftp - annoying, as the backup's mysql config is just different enough to give a man fits. in the data directory rather than usr.

Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

1.  met my wife as a result of livejournal. (and honeymooned by visiting a whole mess of the ripley's believe it or not museums up and down the east coast - from St. Augustine, FL  to Myrtle Beach, SC)

1. became a vegetarian on the 5th of july, 1990. (still do dairy and eggs - now crustaceans, too. )

2. discovered (after we broke up) that one of my ex-girlfriends was married and had kids the entire time we were romantically entangled.

3.adopted 2 cats, despite a strong allergy to them. (Fortunately, I'm used to Newt and Pye now!)
3. Helped recover hundreds of missing kids and elderly/confused adults (most just wander-offs, but at least six real kidnappings) over the course of three and some years.

Students studying computing in the UK and US are outsourcing their university coursework to graduates in India and Romania. Work is being contracted out for as little as £5 on contract coding websites usually used by businesses. Students are outsourcing everything from simple coursework to full blown final year dissertations. It's causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect.

The irony of course is that if they actually get jobs in the sector, this will be how they actually work anyway.

Another Mummy movie coming out, in two months? I didn't even know it was being filmed! Looks like no Rachel Weisz though. That's not really a big loss - I liked her in the first film, but she sort of bleemed out on the sequel for me.

That, and I didn't hear about the new Blood Bowl game. I'm really out of the entertainment loop lately! At least I can have a good violent Dwarfs vs Lizardmen football combat game before end of year.

Bagel, cream cheese, strawberries and pineapple for breakfast - BHK and I slowly worked our way into the morning today.

In-laws came over to do some gardening with BHK- all of it clothed, thanks. Tilled the area, replanted our "volunteers", potatoes, zucchini, cabbage and carrots that came back after last year's planting. I'm really looking forward to seeing what sprouts first!

Microsoft's not only delaying Windows XP SP3 temporarily, but they're also pulling off Windows Vista SP1—which has already been pushed out to automatic software update—because of potential incompatibilities. Most of us don't need to worry about it since this is just an issue with MS's SQL Servers that affect Microsoft Dynamics Retail management systems. Unless you're running a SQL database at home to track the chore distribution for your family, you can go ahead and manually fetch the update and install it yourself.

New back drugs are - Lyrica, Cyclobenzaprine and Nabumetone. I want to do a bit more research on 'em before I take them. Nabumetone in particular had a lot of nasty, scary warnings in the information text.

I am glad that they're not habit-forming, and have a lot of pretty decent write-ups so far.

Dell will be offering Windows XP pre-installed on their computers past the June 30 cut-off date. Computers purchased with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate past June 30 will come with a copy of XP Pro. Dell plans to simply install that copy upon request to save users a step. Perhaps this will help Microsoft officials make up their minds about another extension.

According to F-Secure, over 500,000 webservers across the world, including some from the United Nations and UK government, have been victims of a SQL injection. The attack uses an SQL injection to reroute clients to a malicious javascript at nmidahena.com, aspder.com or nihaorr1.com, which use another set of exploits to install a Trojan on the client's computer. As per usual, Firefox users with NoScript should be safe from the client exploit, but server admins should be alert for the server-side injection. Brian Krebs has a decent writeup on his Washington Post Security Blog, Dynamoo has a list of some of the high-profile sites that has been hacked, and for fun you can watch some of the IIS admins run around in circles at one of the many IIS forums on the 'net.

I need to remember that free comic book day is coming May 3... next weekend! Will I forget? Probably. But it's exciting to not write it down anywhere else and then rediscover. I wonder what loot Aardvark will have for us? I hope issues of Gumby and Hellboy (and maybe an Iron Man heroclix figure?) will be left.

I should scope out umbrella academy - probably my fave freebie book from last time - I could go for a trade paperback, if available.

Just so you know - I have never, ever pistol-whipped anyone, dear journal. Please don't make me change that situation.

Lovely day today.

Lots of gypsy moth and / or tent caterpillar nests in the crooks of trees around here. Seeing birds and moths in flight through the early morning fog is something magical, if you'll excuse the lack of a less cliched expression, dear journal. I really dislike defoliation, but watching moths and butterflies flit around makes me happy. The first date I had with BHK, we saw a luna moth in the parking lot of Mama Lucias, and we were both captivated by it. Now of course, it's doing advertising for a sleep aid.

Believe it or not, I'm a very quiet cricket, too.

Tomorrow will be my 18 month (I just spelled it moth... on the brain) wedding anniversary. Good stuff! only 33 more of those until our 50 year mark!

Goal at the doc today was muscle relaxers or a cortisone shot, maybe an appointment with a physical therapist? I don't want to take narcotics for this, or only in an emergency.

Results were pretty positive - found a potentially good resource for physical therapy, and a few non-dopey pain fixers. I'm going to do more research on the different drugs before taking them this weekend.

After the doc, we went to Ledo's - BHK got a cookin' break. Yummy, but not as good as her stuff.

A month after the beta dropped, Linux distro Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is officially out. Besides running GNOME 2.22 and Firefox 3 Beta 5, a big new feature is Wubi support, which'll let Ubuntu live on the same partition as Windows and makes it easy to uninstall if you want to retreat back into Microsoft's bosom. If you're Li-curious, now's a good time to try. The site's getting hammered so torrent might be your best bet.

Is it vain wonder if people I haven't seen in years ever think of me? Not even friends or people I knew really well... but random classmates, ex-coworkers, etc. I sometimes contemplate my effects on people long after I've gone. There are any number of folks who don't know me from Adam that have caused changes in the way I think or react to things.

More random spam journals adding me - I wonder what is causing it? Is it the time of year? Same thing happened a year ago. ban_set is still my best friend when it comes to dealing with them - far more expedient than dealing with lj-abuse team. I suspect it's a side-effect of the number of google hits the journal gets... ad folks trying to get some free hits.

Assorted doodles done recently on the palm, usually on the bus, or at the stop in the morning.

From the night we missed the scarlet pimpernel. I still think of the Daffy duck version whenever I hear the title.
I had a lot on my mind that day... supposed to represent swirling colors that remain discrete, but it looks pretty static.
A scribble made while waiting for the bus. Not jacket weather anymore, but not sweating in shirtsleeves yet, either.
From yesterday. The color doesn't do justice to her hair's brighness, nor does the balloon properly exhibit her boomingly loud voice.

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. (Some I know too well. You know who you are.) I read your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." I might feel compelled to mock your musical taste, but I'll certainly remember you.

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

BHK made some tasty quiche last night, and it was even more delicious as lunchtime leftovers today. Two kinds - Mozzarella & Garlic vs "Chicken" and Gouda.

Yum. In the battle of the quiches, I am the winner.

Yesterday's lack of rain caught up with us today... the plants must be loving it, given how dry stuff has been.

I may try something new with pictures... since flickr does a by date, maybe a link in the archives will be fun. not sure how long it'll last.

Annoying discovery yesterday, re: installing software via Citrix - add/remove is the way to go - it caused a pretty serious bit of havoc with some regularly used tools. fortunately, the tools were easily recovered and put in place. The error made no sense to me at the time - I may have to rethink application security if folks are putting stuff on there haphazardly. I did appraise the key folks of the situation and I don't foresee it happening again.

App compatibility guide is very helpful.

Having a bit of difficulty with insurance - claim I'm not on my policy! Silly error, but it's a bit of a hassle getting bills that insurance should just process. Spoke to our rep, and it should be fixed by the end of the week.

After work, we went with the in-laws to Jasper's. Fairly unsatisfactory experience. BHK was quoted as saying that it had all the style and panache of an Applebee's. (I have to remember to update the review in the link above.)

I'm thinking that I'd like to take BHK and maybe others to Udupi Palace- I keep meaning to try, but it slips my mind when I'm in the region. It was mentioned to me by one of the bus drivers on my local route... and she seems to know what she's talking about, based on the reviews.

I wonder if fearsome critter stories are fading out? The Hidebehind and hoop snake were the subjects of some of the very first books I picked up from a RIF function back when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. I rarely hear mention of any of the critters in westerns I read these days. While whimsical, the tales could take a pretty nasty turn, not unlike most fairy tales from Europe.

With the exception of ATW man, I haven't seen hide or hair of any Oktoberfest activities. That's not to say there's nothing going on. Perhaps it got lost amongst the Harvest Festivals, Haunted Houses, Corn Mazes, etc?

I'm already tired of hearing about the new "News nightmare" of super staph infections. Though, flesh eating super-bacteria is a nice element of October Halloween horror.

Moscow archives show that in the mid-1920s Russia's top animal breeding scientist, Ilya Ivanov, was ordered to turn his skills from horse and animal work to the quest for a super-warrior.

According to Moscow newspapers, Stalin told the scientist: "I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."

In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed the request to the Academy of Science with the order to build a "living war machine". The order came at a time when the Soviet Union was embarked on a crusade to turn the world upside down, with social engineering seen as a partner to industrialisation: new cities, architecture, and a new egalitarian society were being created.

The Soviet authorities were struggling to rebuild the Red Army after bruising wars.

And there was intense pressure to find a new labour force, particularly one that would not complain, with Russia about to embark on its first Five-Year Plan for fast-track industrialisation.

Mr Ivanov was highly regarded. He had established his reputation under the Tsar when in 1901 he established the world's first centre for the artificial insemination of racehorses.

Mr Ivanov's ideas were music to the ears of Soviet planners and in 1926 he was dispatched to West Africa with $200,000 to conduct his first experiment in impregnating chimpanzees.

Meanwhile, a centre for the experiments was set up in Georgia - Stalin's birthplace - for the apes to be raised.

Mr Ivanov's experiments, unsurprisingly from what we now know, were a total failure. He returned to the Soviet Union, only to see experiments in Georgia to use monkey sperm in human volunteers similarly fail.

A final attempt to persuade a Cuban heiress to lend some of her monkeys for further experiments reached American ears, with the New York Times reporting on the story, and she dropped the idea amid the uproar.

Mr Ivanov was now in disgrace. His were not the only experiments going wrong: the plan to collectivise farms ended in the 1932 famine in which at least four million died.

For his expensive failure, he was sentenced to five years' jail, which was later commuted to five years' exile in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan in 1931. A year later he died, reportedly after falling sick while standing on a freezing railway platform.

'Second Earth' found, 20 light years away

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky "second Earth" circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.

The planet is the most Earth-like ever spotted and is thought to have perfect conditions for water, an essential ingredient for life. Researchers detected the planet orbiting one of Earth's nearest stars, a cool red dwarf called Gliese 581, 20 light years away in the constellation of Libra.

Measurements of the planet's celestial path suggest it is 1½ times the size of our home planet, and orbits close to its sun, with a year of just 13 days. The planet's orbit brings it 14 times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun. But Gliese 581 burns at only 3,000C, half the temperature of our own sun, making conditions on the planet comfortable for life, with average ground temperatures estimated at 0 to 40C. Researchers claim the planet is likely to have an atmosphere. The discovery follows a three-year search for habitable planets by the European Southern Observatory at La Silla in Chile.

I'm rather surprised that you have to pay Wii points to get the internet channel, (it was free until the end of June 2007, while in beta) but you get news and weather for free. I am sort of digging everybody votes - and that was free, too. The browser will probably be the first thing I drop points on... not like I really need it, with I don't know how many connective devices in the house. PDA, PSP, X number of laptops, and Big Brain.

Contrary to my original belief, the points aren't given as rewards for doing well, but can only be purchased. Pfth.

I'll be interested to see what Newtcam and my LJ reading list looks like on the big tv.

BHK got Wii Play (good excuse to get another wii remote, and I'm a sucker for minigames - see Wario) - a lot of fun. I like the billiards game the most.

I suspect that our next few Wii purchases will be one or two of the following:

chilly morning - waiting at the train station for my shuttle to arrive saw me trying to blow smoke rings with just hot breath. I couldn't do it - not sure if it can be done... but it is fun watching steam flow slowly from your nostrils. You can pretend to be Fin Fang Foom, spraying acidic mist at imaginary foes.

Dinner was nice, but I had very little appetite - wrote my brother a letter, gently asking him not to stay in Broward county, but instead to try starting his life fresh in points north - maybe Tampa. A toxic "support system" awaits if he returns to Hollywood and its environs.

Chewing through a very solid work week - A lot of items on the desk to weed through. SQL is taking top priority, given our release date, but there are a lot of items to deal with from various aspects of the web site to planning budgets.

It's a pretty challenging gig, and I like it like that. Not a lot of time to learn, but learn-as-you-go seems to be the rule for any tech thing nowadays.

Not enough code to worry about at work? Here's some icehouse game java in the works, too. I'm not even going to look at that stuff until sometime in 2008, most likely - after crunch time at the office.

Taco night with the in-laws and BHK's longtime pal Lucas (edit - LUKE! NOT LUC!) - he's in town for a span before going off to NY or CA for work. I hope we get to have him over a few more nights before he launches - perhaps he'll be interested in playing some parlor games in addition to any chick flicks that he and BHK both seem to dig.

I am very weary tonight - hitting the sack early. I don't know if it's the rainy weather, or what, but I've been feeling a need to snooze. I'm all for cool, misty days, and if a little sleepiness is a result, that's ok, too. I think that I may be a bit tired due to a lack of unwinding when I first got home... I'll try to kick off my shoes and change into some play clothes a bit sooner tomorrow.

Saw our "whatever" sort of bird of prey in our backyard... still sans camera, so a animated drawing will have to suffice.

Not a window was broken

Not a porch step sagged yet there was a feeling
That beyond the door and into the hall
This was the house of no one at all
No one who breathed nor laughed nor ate
Nor said I love nor said I hate
Yet something walked along the stairs
Something that was and wasn't there
And that is why the weeds on the path grow high
And even the moon races fearfully by
For something walks along the stairs
Something that is and isn't there

Interesting answers to yesterday's poll.

There are many different variations of Rock, Paper, Scissors which range from simple changes in the names of the objects to increasing the number of players or objects. While interesting, most rule variations suffer from one problem or another, making them less interesting games.Versions of this game are also observed in many different cultures. It is usually known by direct translations of "Rock, Paper, Scissors"although some cultures have slightly different names or even entirely different elements representing the different objects. For example in Japan there is a variation which uses a tiger, a chief and the chief'smother as the three elements (the tiger beating the chief's mother, the chief beating the tiger and the chief's mother beating the chief). In Indonesia another version is played with the elements as an elephant, a man and an ant (the elephant crushing the man, the man crushing the ant and ant humorously defeating the elephant by crawling into the animal'sear and making it go insane).[1] The Chinese, not counting Taiwanese, and Koreans use Cloth along with Rock and Scissors, while the Japanese have adopted Paper. Minor variation is also observed in the standard game play.
