Dr. D passed away last week. You'll be fondly remembered. Thanks for introducing me to Umberto Eco, and not talking to me like a kid.

Tonight when I get home, we should be at the final clip for hanging up ornaments. The in-laws went to visit BHK's grandparents pre-Christmas last weekend, so we deemed it better for them to rest up.

Tonight's a lunar eclipse - I won't be staying up to see it, but should be a nifty show!

Let's summarize the weekend a bit.

To play catch up with pictures posted earlier - Went with Amy & Wanda  to Tuba Christmas @ Our Lady Star of the Sea church in St. Mary's  and then had supper at Laughing Buddha - a lot of fun, and more interactive than I'd have thought.  Sunday was otherwise pretty exhausting for both BHK and me.

Saturday - we spotted a snowman by post office, and put some sideways disco balls out on the ground around our house to emulate snowfall. About all we did was listen to holiday music, and then I played a lot of Sam & Max

Friday - Rested at the house... didn't do much of anything, really.

Finally, The Good Guys was canceled. Boo. I loved that show.

Lots going on this week. Lets see...

  • Amy Arrived during the weekend, and will be off on the coming Sunday - Allowed me to give BHK a birthday gift early - Lego Harry Potter for the Wii.
  • First Day of new gig on Monday. I worked pretty late, and it was a mixed bag. I am enjoying it quite a bit overall.
  • Funeral for Ch'Naca Chris on Tuesday. BHK attended, though I could not due to the gig. Chinese Food for dinner, consolation prize for not being able to go to Laughing Buddha for dinner on Birthday Wednesday.
  • Physically ill yesterday morning - Gut was very unhappy. Severe cramps, dry heaving. Pain has mostly abated, but still sore in the belly, arms and chest.
  • Call from my first paying client - needs me to set up her restaurant system - possibly for Saturday. I will try to aim for a week from then, just so I can spend some time with our guests. - timing seems off.
  • It was BHK's birthday last night. I made her a card and a heart out of craft-clay, and she got the earrings we got on our last road trip.
  • Cousin David arrived with his parents, to visit before he journeys off to Hungary on Saturday. His parents left last night, I think.

Today we'll be celebrating Adam's 20th birthday a day early.

I was born on the day of a full moon, 40 years, 5 months, 15 days ago, about an hour after sunrise on the 33rd day of 1969. Candlemas, Groundhog Day, National Change your Windshiel Wipers Day. (I really dig wolframalpha)

We've got to butter his nose today, and get him some razzles. Grill up some hot dogs, give him a cake to munch - maybe some ice cream.

It's cloudy, but hot as heck.. thankfully it rained to cool tihngs off during Adam's party.

We left so BHK could finish her studies - just as well, my back is really crimped today.

Cinco De Mayo... Cheers! We had ratatouille and baked potato for supper. (But the bagel I ate had jalapenos on it!)

Contemplating going to Bengie's Drive-in this weekend. Triple feature of Fanboys, Monsters vs. Aliens and Star Trek a fun, dorky night.
I'm not sure though - I'd prefer to see MvsA in 3-d.

Talked to Danny on the phone tonight - he might be jumping into a game of Champions at his local game store this summer. 150 points - the store used to be the Dragon's Lair, but it's now Adventure something or another.

Bro sent me a text from his new phone - I'll call him tomorrow and see how he sounds. I'm sure he's happy to be out and about.

No Franklin again this morning - I noticed that the lawn was treated with chemicals - hopefully that kept him away, along with the cold, drizzly rain.

    wiggle your hips,

As I was starting to say, I'm glad it's staying a bit rainy and cool outside... I'm probably the only one who is loving a little soft, cool rain over sun and heat. I'm a hairy, big beast... hm, an excuse for another old Ditko picture, I think, dear journal.

    Nutshelling.

BHK and I have been married 30 months today!

Book fair at the BIG warehouse. I stocked up on some Bradbury, Phil Farmer, and Laura Lippman.

Got a little walking in, but there was no way I could haul the huge pile of books about.

BHK made Homemade chili - she thinks it's burned, but I like it fine!

Lawn cut, and a lot of planting done by the family.

Dinner at Selby's - Bought Larry a Lemon Meringue pie. Veggie sub was good - Linda the cook is in the hospital, but her replacement did a great job of making a sammich.

More wii games from the library. (Wario Shake it / Super Brawl) - Wario is cute, from an old-school Mario-brothers perspective. Super Brawl didn't wow me.

Friday at last. Got a long weekend ahead of me - but I've got a couple of issues I've got to tend to before I fully relax. Two things for work to get in alignment - Wednesday will have to go for it! 4 day weekend ahead. Part of it will be spent celebrating the new prez, but most of it will be just relaxing. I'll see if BHK wants to go on a little date maybe, too.

Low today of 7 degrees Fahrenheit.  (High of 22). If it's going to be this cold, it could at least snow, but it is as sunny as can be.

Trimmed back the beard - may return to goatee on the weekend. It's really good at fighting the cold, though.

Rest in Peace, #6 and Mr. Roarke. I hope the new islands suit you both, glad you spent so much time on this one.

A cat named Sammy was usually seen lounging in the window of the post office in Notasulga, Alabama until someone complained.
    *
“They said ‘This is a federal building and he doesn’t pay federal taxes so he can’t come in’,” said postal worker Rochelle Langford.
    *
But Sammy’s supporters think they have found a way around the banishment. They have rented a post office box in his name!

I got so caught up in Sedef's passing, that I forgot that it was my Father's Birthday today. That's not even it... I didn't realize that today was the 25th until I looked at the memo for this afternoon's company meeting - Sort of a punch on top of a punch there. I'll update/ do the comparison thing tomorrow, probably.

I can't believe that in 5 more years, there won't be any more age comparison items... He passed at 44 years old - I'm 39, now.

BHK is working at the food bank tomorrow with Kim Martucci and co at WUSA9. I bet they'll have a good time doing good works - I wish I could go with 'em!

Got my Holiday scheduled for 12/24-1/2 this time around. I'll still be "on call", but hopefully there won't be many fires to put out.

Well, I'm ready for bed - BHK made some fantastic quiche to go with dinner salad, so I'm packed to the gills. Combine that with a little TV, and I'm zonked. I'm caught up with the shield, now - not sure what other tivo'ed things to consult next. Journeyman? Eli Stone?

I'm watching Dexter on the PSP during the Metro trip into work. 3 episodes in now, and It's not too bad thus far. I still really don't find myself sympathetic to him - still seems quite the monster, despite his only "killing bad people". I guess I just like my protagonist to be a good guy, and not a serial killer.

I just found out that Lisa (Sedef) passed away on Sunday.

She was one of the most giving and loving people I have ever known - and that's saying something.

The picture is from when she and Weez came to visit Newton and me back in 2005 - my first time meeting her in person. Even more brilliant and full of heart than on-line.

Whenever I see a butterfly, I think of her - I'm glad that her fight to stay with her family lasted as long as it did - She may have been in pain, but was always quick with a kind word and a smile throughout it all. I'm glad she got for every minute she could with her family.

She and her family will always be loved and be held in the highest esteem by me. I will miss her, but her influence will always be nearby.

Thank you for being the wonderful person who I'll always remember. Good thoughts and love to you in your passing, and always.

Current mood - Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc

Trimmed the 'stache to less sleazy-looking levels, but the whole goatee is coming back or I'm cutting it all off.

After work yesterday, BHK and I met with Adam and Eric for dinner at Hard times cafe. It was $4.99 chili mac night, so I was all about that. BHK and Adam got the chili dogs, and Eric took the healthy high road with grilled chicken sammich.

we spent an hour or two talking about politics, who is voting for what and why - I hope Adam finds his voters reg card. Eric seems to be allying with the 'phants, while BHK and I are leaning a bit more toward the 'keys. It was all civil, though, and we had a good time ribbing one another.

Where McCain and Obama have misled voters. A partial tally.

"A new study estimates that the AIDS virus, HIV, started to circulate in the human population between 1884 and 1924, with a more focused estimate at 1908. This is much earlier than the previously-held estimate of 1930. 'The new result is "not a monumental shift, but it means the virus was circulating under our radar even longer than we knew," says Michael Worobey of the University of Arizona, an author of the new work.' The article also speculates that HIV first began to spread in Kinshasa, Congo."

An analysis of the three major types of gravestone motifs used in eastern Massachusetts during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The earliest of the three is a winged death's head, with blank eyes and a grinning visage. Earlier versions are quite ornate, but as time passes, they become less elaborate. Sometime during the eighteenth century -- the time varies according to location -- the grim death's head designs are replaced, more or less quickly, by winged cherubs. This design also goes through a gradual simplification of form with time. By the late 1700's or early 1800's, again depending on where you are observing, the cherubs are replaced by stones decorated with a willow tree overhanging a pedestaled urn.

Pay special attention to the graph of the popularity of each motif and the slideshow of example gravestones. (thx, peterme)

Dan sent us a pile of stuff after cleaning out his guest room. A boatload of books, a few dvd's:Batman Begins, King Kong - the newest one, Quest for Fire, Razor's Edge, Life aquatic - and a copy of Valley of the Mammoths - looks to be a good game, but he couldn't play it at the school's game/SciFi club due to some of the caroon cavemen having visible genitalia. (He offered to draw clothes on them with a sharpie, but the students prefer Catan and Aquarius anyway.

    His loss is our gain!

I prefer light games that are amusing in and of themselves, games that are pleasing to play and offer something besides the chance to earn victory. Sometimes I'm in the mood to sit back and watch math at work, sometimes I just want to push pawns around and chuck some dice, and sometimes I want to claw my way to the top of the heap. Abstracts, beer-and-pretzels, RPG, wargames... I'm not picky, so long as it's a fun ride.

I just found out that x1650 is the bare minimum of game cards for the next generation of goodies coming out this year. I gout rid of the x1600 just in the nick of time, it seems! I don't want anything to make it hard to run spore or fallout 3. (Or ghostbusters, when it someday comes out. )

Random Scotto factoid - I can chug soda or beer at an alarming rate. That is part of why I don't drink beer with any regularity.. it takes more than one to even begin to quench my thirst.

I sorta-kinda want to live in a styrofoam dome home. (at least as a little place or cabin out in the wilderness somewhere as a second home.)

Got my shots - minor reaction, but nothing tragic.

Met up with the in-laws, and headed to selby sub shoppe - pizza for all, I got a black bean burger and fries. Tasty as all get out!

We planned on heading to Annapolis after to go see Wall-E, but instead we stopped at Toys-R-Us, and picked up Marvel Heroscape and Good Ol' Scrabble.

Heroscape is cute.. sort of like heroclix or D&D miniatures. The fun thing is that it's cross-genre, so you can have cowboys shooting at zombies, fighting robots, ninjas, superheroes and cavemen all on the same board. (and if you like, you can make custom cards for units very easily - so you can have spongebob fighting a paperclip, if you want.) Basic rules are quick and easy... advanced rules look more fun, and maybe another moment or two to learn.

BHK and I opted to head back home after getting our loot - there was a storm brewing... even tornado warning, and we wanted to be curled up at home anyhow.
    0802081841.jpg
We swung by the ATW man - done up as a prospector - I'll try to get better photos of him later.

Watched some tube, lounged, and the in-laws came over - we half watched Micheal Clayton while we played scrabble - Chris dominated.. and she was half asleep. I'd hate to think of what sort of opponant she's make at full mental charge. Chris scored 258 to my 247 and BHK's 162 - and Chris laid all of her letters down first turn... accounting for 63 of those points! I was feeling a little sour-grapey, but not too much... our dictionary is a bit on the lightweight side... time to get something unabridged. The plus size was that it caused me to rethink words I'd use in a pinch... like "QI", but instead, items that are in more everyday language.

The folks went home, but BHK was still up for a wordgame, so we went with another - BHK dominated me at upwords - beat me by more than 40 points.

My brain is melted a bit.. until later, dear journal!

Super saver shipping means possibly slower send times, but the price was right, and I don't need it super soon.. I can wait a week or two.

SWAT team kills 2 dogs in raid on Md. mayor's home

BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. — A SWAT team raided the home of a Washington, D.C.-area mayor, killing his two black Labrador retrievers and seizing an unopened package of marijuana delivered there.

Prince George's County Police said Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo brought a 32-pound package of marijuana into his home that had been delivered by officers posing as delivery men. The Tuesday evening raid was conducted by county police narcotics officers and a sheriff's office SWAT Team.

The package was addressed to Calvo's wife, Trinity Tomsic. His mother-in-law had asked the supposed delivery men to leave the package outside. Calvo has not been charged, though police said he, his wife and his mother-in-law are "persons of interest" in an ongoing investigation.

"We never opened the box. We have nothing to do with this box," Calvo said.

Sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Mario Ellis says deputies "apparently felt threatened" when they shot the dogs.

Calvo said officers entered about 7:30 p.m., first shooting 7-year-old Payton. They then pursued 4-year-old Chase, who ran away and was shot by police from behind, he said.

Calvo said he doesn't have any idea how the package ended up at his house. He called the raid "the most traumatic experience" of his life.

Calvo, who called his town "Mayberry inside the Capital Beltway," gets a small stipend as mayor and works at the SEED Foundation, a nonprofit that runs public boarding schools for at-risk students. His wife works as a state finance officer.

"These were two beautiful black Labradors who were well-known in the community. We walked them twice a day; little kids knew their names and would come up to them and pet them," he said.

So... the police brought drugs to the house, and then raided him... but then didn't arrest or press any charges? They *did* however kill his two dogs.

Good solid day of work today - getting a lot done and covered. Met the new VP, and he seems like a really nice guy who knows his stuff. I wish I could advise him more on commuting, but he's a car guy, and not a train or bus sort.

After work, BHK and I went out to lemongrass for a little date - the food was excellent and the company wonderful. It was raining like gangbusters outside, so we stayed for dessert... the Thai doughnuts and fried ice cream were also great, but I tihnk I ate way too much. After the weather let up a bit, we went to petsmart to look at the critters, and saw an army gal with a haircut that made her look a bit like donald duck.

Went home, watched the pilot of middleman. I liked it - it was a little sticky, but forgivable in a pilot episode... There was a super-intelligent gorilla in a tracksuit, which was pretty cool, but I'd prefer that they not mention comics so much. I didn't need a Grodd reference. He was more like the Mod Gorilla boss to me, anyhow. The "filthy paws / damn dirty ape" quote was expected, but really, that's forgivable. I'll be watching it again, and expect it'll gain some momentum if all goes well.

George Carlin passed away. I think that his routines in recent years got a little... I don't know... Lame? Turned more from radical or wacky to just whiney "get off my lawn you kids" humor? I feel the same way about him the way I feel about a lot of folks I liked more when I was younger - maybe I outgrew him, like I did Harlan Ellison's angry young guy shtick as it turned into an angry old guy bit. As I age, it gets harder to be entertained by that sort of thing. Maybe they both just ran out of whatever mojo kept them fresh and interesting to me. I still like the old stuff. Not as angry, not as bitter... things can have bite and not seem just sad. He was a great satirist during the bulk of his life, and I'm sure he will be missed.

I saw him in "concert", at FAU, ages ago with Jeremy Dawsey. I don't remember where James was, or why he wasn't along. We had a *fantastic* time, and it was likely the only time I've seen a comedian in the last 20 years that wasn't "schticky"... fat guy telling fat jokes, lesbian telling lesbian jokes, black guy doing black jokes, prop comics... etc, etc, etc.

I'll just choose to remember this:

Some people say the glass is half empty.
Others say the glass if half full.
I say the glass is too big.

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood will enshrine an eclectic bunch in its famous curbside Walk of Fame next year, including Hugh Jackman, Ben Kingsley, The Village People and fictional Tinker Bell.

Recipients of the sidewalk stars also include Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes, William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre, Kenny "Baby Face" Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush, Shakira, KFI radio personality Bill Handel and KCRW host Harry Shearer, who also provides voices for characters on "The Simpsons."

Cheeta isn't on the list. The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy "Doctor Dolittle" and the "Tarzan" movies, was trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star.

His handlers had launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

Guinness World Records has called the 76-year-old chimp the oldest living, non-human primate. Cheeta is retired and lives in Palm Springs.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's Walk of Fame Committee chose the recipients, who were ratified by the board of directors Thursday.

Seriously? Tinkerbell got a star, instead of Cheeta? She didn't speak, and has only starred in one film! Cheeta's an actual being, not just a drawing. What's next? The NBC Peacock?

Was a bit sicker in the am, but was feeling better by midday. It seems that mornings are the most difficult now, post sleep and shower. One day until Friday!

BHK and I went out to Thursday's for supper with Chris and Larry - took a walk on the boardwalk afterward. Nice night, only a couple of mosquitoes.

Today is Buddy's Wake - Adam's grandfather didn't make it, sadly.
