BHK and I stopped off at the flea market on the way to study at the library - picked up a nice fedora for $5. (see icon) comfy and it fits. Also got a rock heater for my back and/or BHK's feet

ATW is especially freaky today - he's being hunted by some giant clown phantom. Probably a cannibal.

Opera 10, available for download now, is looking pretty keen - certainly one of the faster browsers I've used in a while. Under the chrome, much of Opera 10’s focus is on speed. Already no slouch when it comes to page rendering, an overhaul in the JavaScript engine means that intensive web apps like Gmail or Facebook load and respond considerably faster in Opera 10. In fact Opera, claims that the new beta has a 40 percent speed gain over its predecessors.

ATW man Crabbing.

First thing we did today was view Swarm of the Snakehead at 1 am, when BHK woke from her Pizza Hut induced torpor "nap".

We weren't disappointed. Swarm of the Snakehead was exactly what we were looking for (and didn't get) when we went to see Grindhouse. A fun, cheesy, "bad in a good way" sort of horror flick. It's most certainly more a comedy film than horror, despite the periodic moments of gore. I'd love to see this on a large screen somewhere, or better yet as a movie shown outside, on the beach... maybe projected on the side of a large white building.

Head and shoulders above any other made for Sci-fi channel stuff, ten pound would likely do quite well to shop the film to them, or a similar venue.

I may be a bit biased, because it was filmed right nearby, primarily in Easton and Oxford - a hoot picking out local spots.

I can't believe that Gunnar Hansen was both Leatherface and the "Quint from Jaws"-style Fisherman! There's range for you!

I think I'll write up a much longer and nicer review of the movie soon - I want to get some input from BHK about her perspective on the film, too. I'd say it was the highlight of our weekend, though.

After the delightful midnight movie with BHK, we tucked back into bed, and snoozed... I'd say we got up and out of the house by 11ish.

Polished off the last of the croissants from the farmer's market (I had chocolate, she had almond), BHK decided to venture forth to Aardvark and grab our waiting games. Mike and Tara were out, but the employees were swell to us.

The day was gorgeous and since we wer euntethered by any other family responsibilities (in-laws took tigger to Salem for a long weekend), we meandered around Southern Maryland, looking for a nice new spot to grab some lunch and just enjoy each other's company.

After much tooling around of St. Mary's, we eventually ended up at the Reluctant Navigator. After eating there, I understand his reluctance. The food was somewhere between meh and ok. Service, not bad - environment when we first walked in the door was "we've made a terrible mistake" but after getting past the foyer filled with old boat motors, chainsaws, and crab traps covered in dust, the clean dining area changed our tune to "oh, this is probably all right." I'd put the food at medium-low quality. somewhere in the 3-5 out of 10 range. I seriously doubt that we'll be back, unless something amazing causes us to return.

We continued on our journey, with food in our bellies - after putting some petrol in the tank, we wandered into Cecil's Old Mill, a general store and post office - pictures to follow sometime after I upload 'em. Meanwhile, check out what somd online has to offer. When I saw the logs in place, I had two thoughts. first - that's perfect for an old movie villian to strap a maiden to, and let the hero try to save her while he gets away. The second was the gravity gun usage in last night's HL2.

The old post office was my favorite, though. Lots of memorabilia everywhere.

We bought a pair of homemade brownies and a diet pepsi, and toddled on home, to water our plants right before a huge, thunder-filled rainstorm.

We had tasty sammiches for dinner, and watched our last tivo'ed Monk - where he reunites with his pop. Not a bad character dev show, but a lousy mystery solution. "We found the tie!"

Now, bedtime. Gnitght, dear journal. Have some lovely linkies.

'Cannibal relatives ate boy alive'

A seven-year-old boy was kept chained in a closet as relatives hacked off pieces of his flesh to eat, a court has heard.

In a case with echoes of the Fritzl family horror in Austria, Ondrej Mauerova was partially skinned in the closet in a cellar at his home in Kurim near Brno, in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

The abuse – involving members of a religious cult – was uncovered by chance last May when a neighbour's television baby monitor picked up graphic pictures of what was happening next door.

Ondrej and his nine-year-old brother Jakub were locked and chained in the cellar for months by their mother Klara, 31 – a member of a group called the Grail Movement.

He was caged, beaten and gagged to stop him screaming, according to reports.

Mauerova had the monitor installed so that she could watch the abuse from her kitchen but the images were picked up by a neighbour who used an identical system to monitor a newborn baby, the regional court in Brno has heard.

Police were called and the two boys as well as what appeared to be a 13-year-old girl were freed.

But the girl later turned out to have been one of the alleged abusers, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova.

She subsequently fled to Norway before being brought back to the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Mauerova has admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by Skrlova and her own sister Katerina.

The accused are Klara Mauerova, her sister Katerina, 34; Barbora Skrlova, 33; her brother Jan Skrla and a friend Jan Turek.

"After eight years and some $65 million, the state of Maryland is taking its first steps to return to an accountable, paper-ballot based voting system. Governor Martin O'Malley has announced an initial outlay of $6.5 million towards the $20 million cost of an optical system which will scan and tally the votes while the paper ballots are retained as a backup. The new (or old) system is expected to be in place by 2010 — or four years before the state finishes paying off the bill for the touch-screen system."

Had a bit of a nightmare about using the walker last night. Forgive my recycling of old doodles. Dreamt of being poked and prodded, cut open and stapled shut.

I've already had two surgeries.. one in 1994, and another in 2003.

Makes me twitchy, just thinking about it. After being cut up, I had to go shopping for tennis balls to put under the walker's feet.

Milton Blahyi, a former feared rebel commander in Liberia's brutal civil war, has admitted to taking part in human sacrifices as part of traditional ceremonies intended to ensure victory in battle.

He said the sacrifices "included the killing of an innocent child and plucking out the heart, which was divided into pieces for us to eat."

There had been numerous rumours of human sacrifices during the 1979-93 conflict but this is the first time anyone has admitted publicly to the practice.

Mr Blahyi, 37, is better known in Liberia as "General Butt Naked" because he went into combat with no clothes on, to scare the enemy.

He is now an Evangelist preacher, who prefers to use the name Joshua.

The forensic expert called to examine the willing victim of German cannibal Armin Meiwes has written a book about his most bizarre case. He recalls his horror at seeing the four-and-a-half-hour video Meiwes made of the killing and disembowelment.

Lots done at work today... a good ending to the week. I have to get with CS first thing on Monday (or after she's back) about streamlining more processes. I'm pretty pleased with the current learning curve and the gang there thus far.

Outside of work - Autorealm - reminder to self - investigate other uses.

Tonight, we'd planned on a visit to see Sweeney Todd - but the venue wasn't up to the task of seating us. However, we may make plans make it easier in the future. (Thoroughly Modern Millie may have better odds.) instead, we wandered around Annapolis, had a lovely bite to eat at Davis' Pub (the onion rings were especially to my liking) and then went to see the latest Die Hard movie. Not bad... took place in Baltimore / DC (sort of a one globby city) and had lots of explosions and beaten up Bruce Willis in it.

We also got to visit the Maryland Kwik-E-Mart - pictures will follow of this nifty bit-o-advertising later in the week. Our Clerks were I. P. Freely, and Mae B. Drunk.

I would really like to get this... (via ectoplasmosis )

Count Gottfried von Bismarck, who was found dead on Monday aged 44, was a louche German aristocrat with a multi-faceted history as a pleasure-seeking heroin addict, hell-raising alcoholic, flamboyant waster and a reckless and extravagant host of homosexual orgies…

The great-great-grandson of Prince Otto, Germany’s Iron Chancellor and architect of the modern German state, the young von Bismarck showed early promise as a brilliant scholar, but led an exotic life of gilded aimlessness that attracted the attention of the gossip columns from the moment he arrived in Oxford in 1983 and hosted a dinner at which the severed heads of two pigs were placed at either end of the table.

When not clad in the lederhosen of his homeland, he cultivated an air of sophisticated complexity by appearing in women’s clothes, set off by lipstick and fishnet stockings.

Feel free to compare to the original Lyrics posted there.

I'm not too fond of Chase's character on House.

I've been working pretty hard lately... a lot of things on my plate. Work's asking for a lot of things at once... I'm hoping it's because folks are going away for a week, not because they expect it all done tomorrow. Updating three websites (designing two of them) editorial content on about a dozen or so pages and a lot of hardware fiddling.

Something's on the wind about new hires at the office. Upgrades or replacements? Who can say? Scuttlebutt is that RS may be coming back full-time, too... I thought it'd take hammer and tongs to accomplish that. If it's additional bodies, we're going to need more room.

Note to self, get sized at Argenti's After Work, and eyeball any tungsten stuff there.

Off the top of my head -

I had a fantastic time. More detail will follow over the days ahead.

Nose-buttering is a lovely tradition, and I heartily suggest you try it, if you have the means.

Safeway maple cookies are really dang yummy.

I want to go back to MD, very, very soon. I missed seeing quite a few people, and I'd surely like to see the folks I got together with most recently again.

I've seen wagers on eternal happiness for $20 and a meal.

Notes in my sack lunch make me happy.

Bunny Suicides.

I saw an Italian burro, a bunch of sheepies and cowies and horsies and corn, headstones, churches and very little traffic, advertisement signage for folks running for office (what is a county executive?), a bunch of really swell people, a beautiful family, a cd that looks like a saw blade, a ton of strawberries, how a house with no tv positions chairs .

I had absolutely no urge to touch the internet this weekend. It just didn't enter my head. (the closest I came to computer desire is the statement "I don't know, we should google it later" came up a few times.) The only time it came up at all was while I was sitting in the airport with nothing to do except window-shop, read my e-book (The Time Traders, by Andre Norton - a book seemingly endless.. somehow I'm going through it at an impossibly slow pace)

I had amazing coach-class airline seat-luck. One free upgrade to 1st class. the other three times had either nobody in the seat next to me (saving them from my wall-like vastness), or an 11-year old kid who was small enough not to mind and able to talk about James Bond villains. Here's a story, one you never heard
there's a fellow in the jungle
one you never knew
you won't get him, but he might get you

Who's the talk at every table from Chicago to Madrid?
Who's the African Clark Gable?
Jojo, the Cannibal kid!

All the tribes eat roots and berries.
He's the one that never did.
He prefers his missionaries.
Jojo, the cannibal kid

He could always pass on his manner and his savoir faire
Mix with every class - eat the finest people everywhere!

Circuses send offers daily
{Bertram Mills made him a bid}
but he's holding out for Barnum Bailey,
Jojo the cannibal kid

Mmmmyeow...
Don't you know? He eats them alive...
{gets the bibbity bobbidy myeow}

Jojo, the Cannibal kid!

All the tribes eat fruits and berries
He's the one that never did
He Prefers his missionaries
Jojo, the cannibal kid

He could aways pass on his manner and his savoir faire
Mix with every class - eat the finest people everywhere!

Circus sends him offers daily
{Bertram mills made him a bid}
but he's holding out for Barnum Bailey,
Jojo the cannibal kid!

Walkabout on Sunday was good, I got more color, but think I dodged the burn bullet again. The ball cap let my nose still get a little red, however.

I walked to Mizner Park, just to check out the place, and it's fared for the worse. I used to live behind there, and liked it a lot... but now, there are no bookstores.. (liberties is gone!), the international museum of cartoon art has been gutted, and the two cool wacky-weirdo art stores have been absorbed by other type stuff. bleh.

I'd hoped to go to my old hangout, Beany's, for a veggie-cheese sammich with the vinaigrette that I love so well... but sadly, it was closed, but just for Sundays.

I abandoned Boca's blandness, and retreated to the bus stop (I was too bushed to walk for a bit), and rode back to Hillsboro... and then crossed over to the 94 and hit the Deerfield mall. I stopped off for a breather at the movies... caught "The Hills Have Eyes" and was surprised. It was better than I thought. (Make no mistake, it is about mutants killing people trapped in an out-of-the-way location, but it was done well for what it was.) Afterward, I stopped off at EB and picked up a copy of counterstrike:source on sale. I'm looking forward to playing multi with hav and kev once I polish my skills a bit.

Roaming area, (note, some was done by bus. I walked about another 8 miles.)

I made a lot of use of autostitch today, clicking on the pictures makes them larger, as usual.

Pictures from walkabout - I saw unicorns and turtles and dolphins and killer mutants )

Answers to yesterday's test.

1. The word "snausages!" said the proper way will make me bust a gut laughing. *FIB*

Though, it can make me chuckle. The old commercial of the dog poking his head out, exclaiming "SNAUSAGES!" can make me laugh, albeit briefly.

2. One of best high school friends was killed by a blow to the head from an iron frying pan, as a result of a car accident.

Brent Ashland. Coming back from a camping trip, freak accident. pulled up short behind another driver, slammed on his brakes, and the skillet brained him. That was that. He had a lot of potential, dumb way to exit.

3. I've accidentally poured cheetos in a bowl, poured milk over 'em, and ate a spoonful like cereal before realizing my terrible, terrible mistake.

Always pay attention to what's in the pouch on top of the fridge. even when you're six years old. Seriously.

4. I say thank you to automatic doors and street lights when they let me pass.

It's an unconscious response. Preprogrammed manners. Plus, I saw Herbie the love bug as a kid, and Buddy Hackett talked about a street light that didn't like him. I appreciate robots helping my travels comfortably and easily. When the machines take over, I'll have a position of authority.

5. I've been published in both Popular Science Magazine and the Unknown Armies Hardcover RPG rules.

Yup. Livejournal actually got me in PopSci (11/13/2003), and UA has me in the credits as a rumormonger. (published August, 2002)

Lakini Malich has made a startling discovery that will change the way the world views the brain-rotting laugh vacuum Garfield:

If you remove Garfield's thought balloons, it goes from an unfunny comic to a rather sad, poignant story about a lonely man who has wasted his life talking to his cat.

He offers a second collection:

here's some more, chronicling Jon's spiral into depression and eventually madness. It's what Jim Davis wanted.- via cruel.com

Bear Days
On
Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, 2005

Miami Metrozoo celebrates Bear Awareness Week on “Bear Days” Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. Zoos across the country, libraries, nature centers, and other wildlife agencies recognize the integral role of bears in nature and advocate bear education in May.

FREE Stuffed Bear to the first 500 kids through the gate each day*

The Metrozoo celebration will include additional Keeper Talks and enrichment activities especially prepared for the three kinds of bears in the zoo on both days.
  • 1:30 p.m. - Sun Bear: See them use their long tongues to extract honey out of holes in tubes!

  • 2:00 p.m. - Himalayan Black Bear: Watch him hunt and catch large fish caught here in the zoo lakes!

  • 2:30 p.m. - Sloth Bear: Observe him as he tears open a termite mound (made of paper maché) to eat wax worms, meal worms and crickets!

*Wild Republic Itsy Bitsies bear (For children 12 and under, while supplies last).

Moment of Lyric:
And you get in your car and drive real far.
And you drive all night and then you see a light.
And it comes right down and it lands on the ground.
And out comes the man from Mars.
And you try to run but he's got a gun.
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head.

Wayne Dyer is entertaining, delivers a sense of being gentle and kind, and probably helps a lot of people out. He's not for me, though.

Intention is a force that we all have within us, and we have the power to draw this energy into our lives by being the energy we want to attract.

Our lives are a sum total of the choices we have made.

Those are nice sentiments, though he walks a slippery slope, taking truths and following a few logical fallacies. "Canada is in North America... therefore, if you're not in Canada, you're not in North America". Um, not quite.

but I also think that a multi-millionaire that charges $450 a seat to give people peace / give better energy / spiritual calm / self-worth smells of profiteering.

I start to see it as a person preying on people's fears and desires. I could be totally off, but I don't think that I am. Why not make the book and audio freely available? You'd think that giving people peace and self-value would be more important than selling things that are grossly overpriced. Maybe the money goes to charities to help others... not that I know of. Maybe it's because I only ever see him when PBS needs money.

To put a different spin on it... Hey, if he's making money and it's actually making people happy, why shouldn't he? You pay a doctor to repair damage, etc.

What's with all the coming "Alien Invasion from the Ocean" stuff? This is even more "too similar for comfort" than the meteor strike movies and "submarine" clones they've done prior.

I suspect that everyone is sucking on the teat of Lost and "weirdness on the beach is great TV!"

ABC:Invasion - When yet another devastating hurricane threatens Florida, temporarily cutting off a small town at the edge of the Everglades, U.S. Park Ranger Russell Poole takes heroic measures to keep both the town's citizens and his family safe. In the middle of the violent storm, his young daughter Rose is the only one to see small lights floating towards the water, seemingly unaffected by the vicious winds.

CBS:Threshold - "in a suspenseful drama about a team of experts who are assembled when the U.S. Navy makes a chilling discovery: an extra terrestrial craft has landed in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey is a government contingency analyst whose job is to devise response plans for worst-case scenarios.

NBC: Fathom - is described to be in the vein of James Cameron's "The Abyss" and revolves around mysterious creatures deep in the ocean. Strange new forms of life that begin appearing in the oceans all over the world.

The Healthy Human Flesh Alternative!

What does Hufu taste like? Does it taste like human flesh?
Hufu is designed to resemble, as humanly possible, the taste and texture of human flesh. If you've never had human flesh before, think of the taste and texture of beef, except a little sweeter in taste and a little softer in texture. Contrary to popular belief, people do not taste like pork or chicken.

I want those T-Shirts... hooray for Cannibals! (via [livejournal.com profile] myid8myego)

Moment of Lyric: (mp3)

Remembering when I was a young man
How everything seemed to turn against me
I didn't know a soul, it was an alien place
The sun was covered by a dark cloud
And though I tried, I couldn't find a way to escape
The only way to go was straight down

Does it hurt?
Oh, it really doesn't matter
Does it burn?
Oh, no
I don't feel a thing
Does it sting?
Oh, yeah, it really doesn't matter
Does it hurt?
Oh, I don't give a damn

Fellow Americans, if you haven't yet registered to vote, or need to re-register due to a change of address or legal name, please go here:

http://moveonpac.org/vote/

Online form. Takes all of two minutes, if that. Seriously.

Print it, sign it, slap a stamp on it (and maybe a piece of tape) and you're good to go. You don't even need an envelope.

Do it right now, if you can. Many states have early October deadlines to register. That's just two weeks away.

If you're not sure whether or not you're registered, you're probably not. Register again.

I don't care whether we're voting for the same guy or not.

Just register and vote, k?

It ain't a right, it's a responsibility.

Thanks.

Also, For people without printers: 7-11 stores are carrying piles of voter registration forms.

American citizens overseas who need to request absentee ballots can get information on how to do that (including the standard federal form to request them) at http://www.fvap.gov/ - that site will point you to state election sites for voters in the US.

I hopped back on the 40 bus, went to the Swap Shop, bought a pile of tasty veggies at the grocer-realm out front, and caught the 2pm show of the circus. I'm pleased that they don't have that many animal acts... 99% human acts, save for the elephants. I don't know why the caution sign mentioned horses, tigers, lions or loud explosions. Also, isn't that caution sign considered notice?

I let him know in no uncertain terms that I'm happy to support his search but I'm not lending him any money. He peeved me by mentioning all sorts of court costs that the lawyer said didn't exist.
