No Zombie Fluxx yet! ack! We'll be picking it up next weekend, hopefully. I'd like to have it in time for Halloween!

Went grocery shopping and then to get a Wii, but they were sold out - I nearly picked up a copy of Portal to tide me over, and may next time if the Wii isn't in stock- I hadn't seen any portal reviews on the new Orange box (Half-Life2 Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 (multi player), and Portal, plus previous releases of HL2 and HL2:episode one) I think it'll be worth picking up, possibly just for portal alone - TF2 looks pretty fun as well - I really like the "Incredibles meets First Person Shooter" school of art. I'll likely download it from Steam rather than pay for it at Target, unless the price is significantly different.

Post-shopping, we swung by the in-laws to watch The Natural with them and Louise. Not a bad movie... not as good as I remembered it, but maybe I was tired, too.

We went home, went up to our "treehouse" for a late supper of leftover Chinese food for me, and fresh cheddar on whole wheat crackers for BHK - watched the first episode of Journeyman - slow rolling but got better at the end. Quantum Leap redux - seemingly uncontrolled time travel, following a person to set things right, can bring items back and forth through time. He also seems to return to his home time, unlike Sam.

We also watched the Simpsons - corn maze / police dog episode. Poor to fair writing. I think the best part of the treehouse is just curling up with BHK and the boys for solid snuggles and comfort - especially nice at the end of the day.

It's a good thing I gobbled up what I did - our fridge is now officially *full*. I don't think anything else could be put in there, without knocking something over.

I wish I had Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic's stretchy abilities... I really don't like running up and down stairs to the treehouse with stuff or just to see what's going on once I'm settled in and comfy.

Rise and Shine! Early Bird gets the worm! Road trip to Virginia today with BHK! (in-laws and Louise will caravan with us, in another car)

faceplode
One of the ideas that BHK and I bandied about on the road trip after making up random drink names... like "The devil's shoelaces", "Cool Breeze" and "Bag o' Tremors", we started thinking about magical drinks that replicate experiences - "skydiving", "slap in the face", "Karate victory" were some of the more tame ones.

Stopped at Sheetz to get a nibble mid-trip...
Observations:
  • garlic fries good but swimming in oil at the bottom
  • mac and cheese bleh.
  • Cinnamon pretzel needs no frosting.
  • Coffee drink was sort of weak.
  • How many teenagers lurk there as a social thing?
  • Cups leap out an attack patrons.

I think we'll stick to pre-packaged foods next time.

While at Bugah and Em's b-day, met Nana (great Gramma), The Gramma and Roy. We all went to an Italian place for supper - Joe's. From the school of "HUGE portions of OK food" The spaghetti looked great, as did the lasagna. I tried a bite of the eggplant parm, which was a little bitter - my veggie sub did fine.

Speaking of the birthday, I was surprised to see that BHK and I were the only ones to get the 10 and 5 year old any toys! Next closest thing to a toy was a gumball machine bank. Oh, wait - I forgot. Louise got Em a toy cell phone and necklace. Bugah seems to dig the skateboard, but it looks like the learning curve may be a bit more steep than we had initially thought. I'm confident that he'll be all over it soon.

After playing tanks and a few other mini-games, Bugah's given me the Wii bug again. We may try and pick one up this weekend. I also played Destroy all Humans 2 on the xbox with Bugah, which seems to be a nice sequel to the one we have for our Xbox at home.

Em was a sweetie - leading me around by the hand - we played some concentration (using dominoes to match the number of pips) before leaving for dinner.

We made it back to our place about 11:30 - worn out from the day's ruining around and socializing. My hip was a little creaky after the drive, but no ill effects aside from that.

Ahhh.. now *there* is the October weather I've been waiting for! 55 degrees! That's the stuff!

Random bit of fun - the other day I saw a cyclist riding around on a penny-farthing bicycle... in helmet, spandex shorts and so on. I would've almost preferred to see a bowler hat and waxed moustache, but the clash of modern and historical was even better, I think.

Halloweenie Survey -

Childhood

What is the first costume you remember wearing?
Masque of the Red Death

What was your favorite costume?
Tin foil robot was a fun one... glowstick eyes!

Best Halloween memory as a kid?
CANDY! CANDY! CANDY!

Worst Halloween memory as a kid?
Going to the Li'l Demon Disco way back when, and dealing with dumb older kids bossing little kids around.

Ever TP or egg a house?
Not houses... but we did egg some kids that were mean to us... see above. We got punished - rightfully so.

Did you steal other kids candy?
Nope... but I did make some trades that seemed awfully in my favor - I give you my smarties, and you give me your fun size snicker bars? sure!

Misc Questions

If you were a character in a horror movie, would you survive?
I hope so! I'd probably be the "safe guy" that dies after you think the monster was dispatched, but really wasn't.

Would you live in a house that was rumored to be haunted?
Sure... I'd at least check it out.

Would you live in a house where someone had been murdered?
As long as the killer wasn't around to repeat the crime, sure.

Other than a gun, name the first murder weapon that comes to mind?
Cinder Block. Oh, ouch. Why didn't I think of poison or a knife?

Would you ever be a mortician?
Depends... I think maybe yes.

Do U fit serial killer profile?
I don't think that I'm antisocial enough.

Do you believe people can be possessed?
No, I don't.

What is something that will haunt you for the rest of your life?
Seeing my dad on his deathbed is pretty enduring.

How do you feel about death and dying?
I think that it's something that happens - I can be pretty sensitive or pretty well-armored to it, depending on the situation.

Have you ever seen a dead body, other than in a funeral home?
Yup.

Were you afraid to go in the ocean after you saw Jaws?
I was, but I was a little kid! I got over it in under a week.

Would you eat a human if your life depended on it?
Probably. I hope I never have to find out.

What was your last nightmare?
I dreamed that my body was made of plastic squares, and pieces were left behind wherever I went... I was worried that I'd run out, because I couldn't put the acrylic/lego type squares back on.

Rather be buried alive for a night or sleep next to a dead body?
Sleep next to a dead body.

The Small Press Expo will be held in Bethesda this weekend, Friday and Saturday. SPX is the biggest gathering of independent comic artists and cartoonists on the east coast and will feature many local artists from DC, Maryland and Virginia. I've got other plans (birthday party - even more fun, and pre-scheduled)

Movies I haven't seen yet, but wouldn't mind catching in the theater while they're still out -

3:10 to Yuma
Darjeeling Limited
Michael Clayton
Eastern Promises
We Own The Night
The Dark Is Rising - yikes... really poor reviews. Maybe not.

Whoops - Dragon Wars movie is already kaput? That didn't take long. I guess it's just as well.

No movie tonight, however. We're preparing for the previously mentioned party for Bugah and Em's... we're going to be pulling the in-laws and louise in tow, so it should be a humdinger.

Went to Game night yesterday at the Clampets - met some nice folks and chitty chatted... didn't do a lot of gaming.

A pair of CPAs, Clare- a Teacher of chemistry at the Naval academy, a network cable guy (Eric) in addition to Brent (travel agent), Alison (Pampered Chef Home sales), Nick (not sure what he does) A pretty fascinating study in "nice people who don't share any of my opinions on things". A pretty conservative, heavily church-going bunch, but very kind and tolerant. I think that Amy would like Nick, and that Kev would really dig Clare, if I was of a match-making bent. The game we played was a "get to know you" sort of thing, where you have cards, and try to figure out what a person say if asked questions like "Where'd you last get groceries" / "How often do you Vacuum a month" / "How many Piercings do you Have" / "Favorite Politician".

It was a little shocking to me to hear otherwise similar to myself types say that they thought George Bush was their favorite politician, without a shred of sarcasm or irony. I'll do better to pretend I'm in bizarro-world next time I make my guesses.

Picked up lots of goodies for Bugah and Em for the co-birthday celebration next weekend - Em got Moon Sand, Aqua Dots and a little robot-kitten - Bugah got a Wave-style skateboard, and a 4-up Nerf rocket launcher. I think that they'll be pleased. Plus, I want to play with the Moon Sand and Nerf Gun. BHK picked up some glow in the dark filler Aqua Dots too, so I imagine she'll be "helping" Em make some neat designs as well.

Tonight, we did a more game-oriented game night (One long game of Apples to Apples, and a quick game of Aquarius - Chris won both!) with the in-laws and Louise, after Pizza and watching When Harry Met Sally and a Carol Burnett show blooper reel/retrospective. Strange that there was no mention of Lyle Waggoner.

Brisk weather outside - lovely stuff, helps my breathing quite a bit. I could actually see my breath the other night when we picked up last minute gift bags for Tina's party last night...we're hitting my seasonal weather of choice. I'm looking forward to wearing a jacket.

Dashed off to the Giant with BHK - we bought some cold cuts and cheese to make ourselves some picnic lunch outside... sat on the bench and made each other sammiches. Best meal I've had in a while - I'd rather eat stuff that fresh and enjoy the weather than go to a big restaurant. I really preferred it to tonight's spaghetti dinner, in fact. Louise is renowned for for her spaghetti sauce, but I'm more of a fan of (Gordon Ramsey alert) Simple / Rustic style of cooking. In fact, BHK and I both have been found using that as commentary on food (and whatever else) these days. Like calling Marco Polo out... if one of us says Simple there is bound to be an echo of Rustic not too far behind. Hey, it's better than picking up his swearing habit, I guess.

Louise's sauce and pasta was supplemented by Tina's new beau Matt's meatballs, which I hear were pretty tasty, especially the beef. The turkey ones looked good, but maybe a bit dry. His sauce looked decent - I wonder how it mixed with Louise's?

The in-laws brought salad, and BHK made the birthday cake - carrot, with autumnal colored sprinkles in the cream cheese frosting. it was pretty darn tasty - somehow, still warm after our meal.

Tina got a lot of jewelry as loot - we gave her 1001 places to see before you die , some pedicure knickknacks and a necklace with a pearl and a pink shell motif. Louise did pearls for her too.. very similar to those she got BHK for her b'day. In-laws got her a heart necklace and earring set in sterling (I think), and some nice black gloves. I don't know what Matt got her.

I won our game of apples to apples (that's what we picked up last minute earlier - it was that or play boggle... and not a lot of folks have the scrabble / spelling ferocity or Carcassonne bent that BHK and I do) - since there were 7 of us (Adam had to bail early for his church group) we played to 5 victories best answer was Larry's "wood chipper" to "sappy".

A brief summary: BHK's Birthday!

cake
birthday

I managed to butter her nose by sneaking caches of a dollop in the nightstand (on a plate), and then by instilling enough paranoia in her to make looking for it in there ridiculous. A year ago today, I proposed to her - more a gift to myself, or us both. I'm happy that she said yes.

We visited the bayfest from about 11:30 to 1:30... got home before we both spontaneously combusted. We quite enjoyed the fest, and it's sort of a shame that it'll be the last one. (Or at least, there are no plans for more in the immediate future, anyhow.)

Items consumed:

  • Funnel Cake.
  • Kettle Corn
  • Egg Rolls
  • Orangeade
  • Water, lots of Water.

Items of note - toothless man gumming a hot dog and beer

BHK bought me a classic 60's style Spider-man lunch box for 50¢ - good find.

Very cute but brief parade of:
  • a fire truck
  • a local celebrity I don't know
  • 7 men in fuzzy admiral's hats
  • several little girls with pom-poms
  • several kids in gi uniforms, swinging shiny golden nun-chucks
  • a stilt-walker in a Frankenstein costume about 10 feet tall.

On the way home we stopped in at a storefront spa that recently surfaced - it might be a place for BHK to visit to redeem her birthday "beauty coupon" I put a hand made thing in there for whatever she wants to do at Scalped, but it's totally transferable.

After we recovered from the heat (drank a lot of cold drinks once inside, we realized that there were no soft pretzels at the fair, but we did have some in the freezer, so we continued the fair-food experience in the comfort of our air conditioned living room by consuming pretzels and remaining kettle corn while watching Ace of Cakes... we didn't have any energy to do much more than that, despite the highly event-filled weekend here. Due to the heat, we skipped the local B.I.G. book sale at the tobacco warehouse, the opening of the Ren-fest (not a problem, it runs for 9 weekends!), and totally forgot about the Greek fest until late in the evening. It was simply too effin' hot.

Once the sun turned the heat back a notch, we headed over to the in-laws for Chinese Food, a little present-opening and viewing of one of BHK's presents... Grease and Grease 2... the heat turned into storms, so we had to shut off the tube and a/c for a bit at their house, but aside from that, it was a pleasant evening... Louise made it over, too!

We headed back right before the end of Grease two - BHK and I were both tuckered out, and were fairly sleeping through the video.

Tomorrow, we have a birthday party at Tina's place!

Hm... some more good reviews on the DC to NYC bus - I wonder how much cheaper it is than the speedy-train?

BHK talked to PG county's Sheriff's Internal Affairs about the car chase a little while back. I'll be interested to see what comes of it - I only wish I would've been home with her at the time.

Treat from BHK! Yum. Tastes great,
looks far too brown for human consumption.

Flying_blind has a better entry about the ljopoly board and a lot of the recent drama - than I would make, so here's a link.

I'm backing up my LJ pretty much once a week, just so I have a copy for when either inclination or necessity require me to put my stuff either on my own website, or transfer it to a different one. I suspect that neither will happen too soon, but it's probably going to take place eventually.

Cruel 2 B Kind is a game of benevolent assassination.

At the beginning of the game, you and a partner-in-crime are assigned a secret weapon. To onlookers, it will seem like a random act of kindness. But to a select group of other players, the seemingly benevolent gesture is a deadly maneuver that will bring them to their knees.

Some players will be slain by a serenade. Others will be killed by a compliment. You and your partner might be taken down by an innocent group cheer.

You will be given no information about your targets. No name, no photo, nothing but the guarantee that they will remain within the outdoor game boundaries during the designated playing time. Anyone you encounter could be your target. The only way to find out is to attack them with your secret weapon.

Watch out: The hunter is also the hunted. At the beginning of the game, you and your partner will also be assigned your own secret weakness. Other pairs of players have been given your secret weakness as their secret weapon, and they're coming to get you. Anything out of the ordinary you do to assassinate YOUR targets may reveal your own secret identity to the other players who want you dead.

First time using mass transit to get *to* work. Not bad, but it seems harder to arrive than it is to depart, contrary to the toilet roll hypothesis. Rode in to the station with mom-in-law, and aside from the lack of knee room in some of the seats, I've got no gripes. It means getting up a little bit earlier, but I think that this will save us a ton of wear on the love cube and even more fuel. Total round-trip cost for a day is under $10. (just). Of course, my trip home threatened to rain on me at the bus stop - only one place I have to wait under cover is right as I leave the office. I think that if I leave about 10 minutes earlier, I can get into the office about 30 minutes quicker. We'll see.

BHK made Louise an awesome birthday cake... 4 layers! (see above - Neopolitain style, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry - with a milk chocolate frosting.) also barely-seen are some cupcakes spelling out her name, too. (I took the S cupcake to work today. :) ) The cake is more of a silo than a disc, but that's aok with me. Initially, it was to be a ckae for both Doug and Louise, but Doug broke it off with TM - moved out of the townhouse, and gathered up his belongings. I hope it's what is best for the both of 'em... they're both pretty nice folks from what I've seen. I imagine he's back on the base now, and will be going back overseas shortly. Kind of a bummer way to enjoy leave. Louise, however made out like a bandit. We got her a nice purse, TM got her some really pretty earrings, and the inlaws hooked her up with outback gift certs. I'm not sure what will become of Doug's presents... I imagine they'll be recycled or reprocessed. (I suspect father-in-law is going to get a Bass Pro shops gift card fairly soon for his B-day in August, and Adam may reap the TM rewards.)

Took Bugah & Co to Bob Evans for a farewell breakfast... MN was sneaky and footed the bill. We're going to have to work out some sort of system of permissions for bill catching! Poor Boog didn't want to head out, but Em seemed ready to head on home.

Relatively mellow after the fireworks on the 3rd. More grilling of hot dogs and veggie burgers (out of propane), Louise, Doug, Tina, Kendall, Adam and BHK all got together for some good eats and limited fireworks... every time we went somewhere to shoot off some airborne pretties, the police or a homeowner came out and said no sir, no sir. The fountains were quite pretty, anyhow. Areas we were blocked include the back yard, the private beach opposite the buildings, and "forbidden beach" which is public, but right next to some big homes. A fellow came out and took down the plate numbers of everyone parked there... sort of jerky behavior for the 4th. I can understand not wanting stuff too close to your house, but we were shooting the beach and it was just 9:30pm... not too late by any one's estimation. Ah well, the food was good and we all got to hang out a bit, and enjoy a midweek day off.

There was a tornado watch in DC - just as well that we didn't head to that mob scene. The National Mall was briefly evacuated around 5 p.m., forcing the thousands gathered for 4th of July festivities to take shelter in nearby monuments and federal government buildings. By 7 p.m. the Mall was re-opened, though everyone had to pass back through security checkpoints set-up in the area again.

We headed home - BHK and I just enjoyed a little peace and quiet come the end of the day... not a bad thing at all.
