In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

For those of us unable, or unwilling, to pay to watch the UFC Freedom 250 event which "happened" to coincide with POTUS47's 80th birthday, it seems to have been everything that we thought it might be, tacky, shamelessly crass and with strong echoes of the declining days of the Roman Empire's gladiatorial games.

But not to worry, visitors to Washington could visit the newly renovated Reflecting Pool, and possibly take home some souvenir algae bloom.

The US/Iran war is apparently over.... again... possibly... still being worked out... waiting to be signed... is still general rather than specific. It's a freaking "Choose Your Own Adventure" that's what it is.

The UK is looking to ban major social media access to those under 16

I meant to mention the passing of Marcia Lucas, the film editor who truly made "Star Wars: A New Hope" the blockbuster what it was, though she always insisted that she had only fixed a scene or two.

108 of 108. Sorry for tardiness! Most of the following post will cover what the JLI’s most persistent cast members have been up to in the last decade. Warning for a front-and-center suicide attempt and some spoilers, especially for Human Target.

Just as Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire charged in and made established characters like Blue Beetle and Mister Miracle their own, their successors at DC Comics have picked up the JLI’s legacy and made it theirs. No one could duplicate Giffen and DeMatteis, just as no one could duplicate Jack Kirby, because their whole approach was about innovation. You follow them best by not following them exactly, by not “training yourself” too much on their “data.” You can’t prompt-engineer a BWA-HA-HA. )

107 of 108. Warning for gruesome death.

At the same time Giffen and DeMatteis were doing Larfleeze, they were putting out Justice League 3000 with JLA veteran artist Howard Porter. The series (later renamed Justice League 3001) involves an attempt to reconstruct the original Justice League, 1000-ish years in the future. But the restoration of their powers and personalities is far from perfect (3000 #1). JUST IMAGINE the producers of Jersey Shore creating the DC Universe! )

In what would normally be great news for Archie Comics—a Hollywood deal to bring the Archie to the silver screen—has opened up a legal can of worms for co-CEO Jonathan Goldwater. Raven Capital Management claims that Goldwater defaulted on a loan in 2024 giving them control of the intellectual property and the deal with Universal Studios was made without their knowledge.

A random Instagram post filled me in on something I'd never heard of before.

Did YOU know that in the late 1980's, JM Strazynski (He of Babylon 5 and many other series) put together a proposal for a Batman cartoon with Jason Todd as Robin? Because I didn't... (Of course, If you HAVE all have heard of this then sorry for wasting time)

Given that they've built a giant lightning conductor in the shape of a cage match ring on the lawn of the White hosue, and there may be thunderstorms in the next few days, Mother Nature has the chance to do the FUNNIEST thing this week!

The World Cup kicks off this week, and we wish the many, MANY teams well. I suspect they'll need it given we've already had a well-respected Somali referee refused entry to the US because of Trump's immigration policies.

We lost Anthony Head at the age of 72. Best known as the surrogate father figure of a generation in Buffy, and the definitely NOT the desired father figure of Uther in BBC's Merlin amongst many other stage and screen roles. The outpouring of love for him from basically everyone he ever worked with has been profound, all speaking of his kindness, humour and unflagging support for young and new actors and crew. Too short a life, but one well lived.

I appreciate I've still to make the Pride post I mentioned last week, for which my apologies, it will be coming shortly.

106 of 108. Giffen and DeMatteis’ collaborations continued on a few JLI-adjacent properties and a few works that had nothing to do with the JLI. They could dip into nostalgia now and then, but their real skill was trying new stuff or putting new spins on things. So it’s amazing they even HAD such long careers in comics, considering. )

With the MotU movie out (I'm gonna see it this Sunday!) I looked back through Dark Horse's mahoosive compilation of the classic mini-comics that came packed with the action figures. Some were familiar and nostalgic, others weird and enlightening, some cheap and crappy and worst of all, some were New Adventures of He-Man.

Something with which I had no familiarity - even though one of sisters totally had She-Ra toys - was the Princess of Power line. And boy, that Adora is both quick to throw out death threats and a believer that pretty=good...

Apologies for the poor scan quality - a 1200+ page hardcover is a pain to scan.
