This week seemed to go more swiftly than imagined, and today was pretty dang full of stuff.

Shots, then swung by Trott's farmers market for corn, zucchini (we need zucchini?!?) and eggplant (we need eggplant?!?)

BHK is veggie-crazed, and wants more of the tasty stuff than our victory garden is producing. Mystery veggie is pumpkins after all - we'll have some gourds to carve for Halloween! (they sprung from the seeds of the rotting pumpkins we tossed into the garden area last November.)

We picked up the in-laws, and hit the Selby Sub Shoppe - white pizza for Chris, Hamburger for Larry, Chicken Parm for BHK, and a black bean for me. They make their own bread, and it was all really tasty!

Came home, cooled our heels a bit and then went to go see the US Navy band play a free concert on the boardwalk by the bay. The bluegrass band went into more mainstream country and southern rock - they were quite skilled, though still had a little newbie edges on 'em. The singer was 2 days into the band, and his voice was excellent. I wonder what the difference between "Musician, 1st Class" and "Chief Musician" is in rank and pay grade for the Navy? The Banjo guy was my fave of the lot.

Mother in law, reading the local news while we were at the free concert on the bay.
Note the vital sombrero placement in the picture.

We all came home, and had ice cream while watching Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. (I hadn't seen it since the theater.)

The folks left, and now BHK is asleep, leaning on me while I watch and old Episode of Star Trek - The Cloud Minders - I don't even remember this one, and it seems for good reason... the writing and acting were of a lower par than usual.

Ray Gun Puts Voices Inside Your Head - The Sierra Nevada Corporation claimed this week that it is ready to begin production on the MEDUSA, a damned scary ray gun that uses the ‘microwave audio effect’ to implant sounds and perhaps even specific messages inside people’s heads.

Ten year old obit that never gets old -
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 83.

The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin.

They put his left leg in.

And then the trouble started.

Google docs changed the layout slightly - I like the new bar across the top.

chilly morning - waiting at the train station for my shuttle to arrive saw me trying to blow smoke rings with just hot breath. I couldn't do it - not sure if it can be done... but it is fun watching steam flow slowly from your nostrils. You can pretend to be Fin Fang Foom, spraying acidic mist at imaginary foes.

Dinner was nice, but I had very little appetite - wrote my brother a letter, gently asking him not to stay in Broward county, but instead to try starting his life fresh in points north - maybe Tampa. A toxic "support system" awaits if he returns to Hollywood and its environs.

Rest in Peace, Dani.

We'll play Big Rock Candy Mountain for you here. She first popped into my journal just shy of 7 years back. She was one of the good ones - I'll miss her.

An example of why.

News article about her - Hemet driver killed when car rolls over

A 27-year-old Hemet woman was killed when the car she was driving on Gilman Springs Road left the roadway and rolled over, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash caused massive head injuries and was ejected, said CHP spokesman Chris Blondon.

Several farmworkers discovered the wrecked 1999 Ford Taurus just before 10 a.m. Thursday in a field about 190 feet off Gilman Springs Road, just east of Bridge Street, Blondon said. It appears the accident occurred the night before, Blondon said, but the wreckage could not be seen from the roadway.

The name of the driver is being withheld until her relatives are notified.

Blondon said it appears the woman was traveling east on Gilman and lost control of the car as she tried to negotiate a curve. The vehicle smashed through a chain-link fence and rolled over. Blondon said the driver was partially ejected and sustained massive head injuries as the car rolled again. The woman was ejected from the vehicle as it continued to roll over, Blondon said.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Blondon said.

A year ago today, I landed in Maryland. Life's been pretty damn good ever since.

A lot of groundbreaking stuff has happened in the year between then and now.. most of it documented here, some not so much, as I've been really spending a lot of time enjoying life more than documenting it.

I'm married, living in a new state, a new job, a new everything, really.... I really officially started on that path a year ago. It's been a mighty fine journey so far... I can hardly wait for the years ahead.

Moment of Lyric - Jason Falkner "This Will Be Our Year" (Zombies cover)

The warmth of your love
is like the warmth of the sun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

don't let go of my hand
now darkness has gone
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

and I won't forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"
You gave me faith to go on

Now we're there and we've only just begun
This will be our year
took a long time to come

The warmth of your smile
smile for me, little one
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

You don't have to worry
all your worried days are gone
this will be our year
took a long time to come

and I won't forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"
You gave me faith to go on

Now we're there and we've only just begun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

Yeah we only just begun
yeah this will be our year
took a long time to come

Work for the county was pretty keen on the first day - nice folks there. Help desk duties are pretty simple and straightforward - image laptops, XP transitioning, phone and online support, so far.

On the second day, it was primarily imaging desktops and laptops for the police department, punctuated by telephone help-desk stuff... all very straightforward.

I like the people I work with, ad would enjoy a full-time gig with that crew. I'm pleasantly surprised to see an even mix of the sexes, with some marrieds... very different than the all guy network rooms or all female non-profit agencies.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has written an interesting essay, "Thoughts on Music",in which he explains why Apple has refused to license its FairPlay DRM scheme, and calls out to the music industry to end copy protection.Jobs also points out that the vast amount of music on iPods is DRM-unencumbered, and argues that the 3% of music on iPods which is DRM-encumbered is hardly enough to lock users into the iPod platform.

It will be interesting to see the fallout from this essay, both from the music industry (which has recently shown signs of re-thinking DRM), and the European countries like Norway, which has declared Apple's DRM illegal.

Looks like spore is still on schedule! I'm really looking forward to it.

Happy Birthday, [ profile] graypumpkin!

I didn't get to hit ¡Viva Broward! yesterday... I ran out of time. Today, however is a new day... I think I'll trundle down there for a midday bit of entertainment.

Got a mild interrogation from someone at the pool on the way back from grocery shopping yesterday. I was toting a double armload of groceries, heading to my place; when a guy at the pool area calls over to me.

Guy:"Hey, you!"
Me:"Hi! Can I help you?"
G:"Do you live here?"
G:"Which unit?"
(*note* - at no time did he ask my name, or say anything in a non-interrogatory style. )
M:"323D... can I help you?"
G:"No, I just wanted to know."
(*note* - Did he think I was a hoodlum of some sort? That I was going to use packages of peanut butter crackers, deodorant, light bulbs, and a half-dozen liters of Diet Doctor Pepper to do some crazy MacGuyver evil on the complex?)
M:"Oh. What unit do you live in?"
M:"Nice place. Have a good one."
And I walked away.
He didn't reply.

I didn't look shabby or anything... wearing a nice clean Hawaiian style golf shirt, short hair, clean shaved, maybe perspiring a bit, due to toting the barge.

I figure I can look him up in the condo directory later... I'll get the lowdown from Jesus-bread lady and/or the Condo Superhero sometime today, I'm sure.

In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be hell to pay

People listen attentively
I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet.

This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
Then baked into cakes which are passed around.

Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement
Top skill and brain
But all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side.

Now the d and the a and the m
And the n and the a
And the t and the i-o-n
Lose your face, lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flame

The Florida Highway Patrol has set up a way for you to have and keep your emergency contact information current and on file with them.  This information may save crucial time if ever it becomes necessary to contact family members, or other loved ones in an emergency.  It is only available to individuals holding a current Florida Driver License or Florida Identification Card.

Here's the link:

There are fried Twinkies and even fried candy bars.

Now, vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has come up with a new artery-clogging concoction for the State Fair of Texas. It's fried Coke.

Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Gonzales said the fried Coke came about just from thinking aloud.

Gonzales' diet-buster wins the creativity honor at the second-annual Big Tex Choice Awards Contest.

Judges for the contest chose Shirley London's Fried Praline Perfection as the tastiest fried delicacy.

The two won out among 26 entries such as fried macaroni and cheese and a deep-fried cosmopolitan.

London said she came up with the fried pralines idea after buying pralines at the fair last year. She plans to sell the pralines alongside fried marshmallows.

Gonzales achieved notoriety in 2005 with the fried peanut butter, banana, and jelly sandwich -- selling an estimated 25,000 of the treats, according to the fair's Web site. The site said London got media attention in 2004 with her fried marshmallows on-a-stick.

This is the same state fair that brought about the corn dog. The Web site said Neil and Carl Fletcher conjured up a sweetened corn-battered wiener on-a-stick and sold it for 15 cents during the 1942 State Fair of Texas.

The Erlking - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - mp3

Who's riding so late through th' endless wild?
The father 't is with his infant child;
He thinks the boy 's well off in his arm,
He grasps him tightly, he keeps him warm.

My son, say why are you hiding your face ?
Oh father, the Erlking 's coming apace,
The Erlking 's here with his train and crown!
My son, the fog moves up and down. -

Be good, my child, come, go with me!
I know nice games, will play them with thee,
And flowers thou 'It find near by where
I live, pretty dress my mother will give."

Dear father, oh father, and do you not hear
What th' Erlking whispers so close to my ear?
Be quiet, do be quiet, my son,
Through leaves the wind is rustling anon.

Do come, my darling, oh come with me!
Good care my daughters will take of thee,
My daughters will dance about thee in a ring,
Will rock thee to sleep and will prettily sing."

Dear father, oh father, and do you not see
The Erlking's daughters so near to me?
My son, my son, no one 's in our way,
The willows are looking unusually gray.

I love thee, thy beauty I covet and choose,
Be willing, my darling, or force I shall use!
"Dear father, oh father, he seizes my arm!
The Erlking, father, has done me harm.

The father shudders, he darts through the wild;
With agony fill him the groans of his child.
He reached his farm with fear and dread;
The infant son in his arms was dead.

The Haunted House by Vic Crume

Not a window was broken
And the paint wasn't peeling
Not a porch step sagged yet there was a feeling
That beyond the door and into the hall
This was the house of no one at all
No one who breathed nor laughed nor ate
Nor said I love nor said I hate
Yet something walked along the stairs
Something that was and wasn't there
And that is why the weeds on the path grow high
And even the moon races fearfully by
For something walks along the stairs
Something that is and isn't there

Wiped out again last night - it seems like everyone at the office has some sort of assorted yuck, from flu to worse. I think GG and LD are the only ones showing some form of immunity. I look forward to a solid night's rest this weekend.

A Florida woman has been awarded $11.3 million in a defamation lawsuit against a Louisiana woman who posted messages on the Internet accusing her of being a "crook," a "con artist" and a "fraud."

Legal analysts say the Sept. 19 award by a jury in Broward County, Fla. — first reported Friday by the Daily Business Review — represents the largest such judgment over postings on an Internet blog or message board. Lyrissa Lidsky, a University of Florida law professor who specializes in free-speech issues, calls the award "astonishing."

DAMASCUS, Syria - Hunters stalked giant camels as tall as some modern-day elephants in the Syrian desert tens of thousands of years ago and archaeologists behind the find are wondering where the camels came from and what caused them to die off.

The enormous beasts existed about 100,000 years ago and more of the bones, first discovered last year, have been found this year in the sands about 150 miles north of the capital, Damascus.

It was the moment the fans had been waiting for: headliners John Mayer and Sheryl Crow briefly sharing the Sound Advice Amphitheatre stage together near the beginning of Crow's set. The two jammed out to Crow's My Favorite Mistake, standing back-to-back as Mayer wailed out a funk riff. It was hot.

Of course, Mayer was wearing a bear costume, complete with a big goofy amusement park bear head. But it was still hot, and that's saying something.

Crashed out hard last night. One minute I was active and wakeful on the phone, the next, ZZZzzZZZ. Pretty solid sleep through the night, with the exception of a mild break (I was maybe only 1/3 awake) to take medicine and put on the CPAP for official sleeps.

Met with Newt's catsitter this morning - She's a nice older lady that will be coming up twice a day to say hello, give him some loving, and make sure his food, water and litter are properly tended to while I'm away. She knows not to let Newt out of the house, and that he's a crafty little guy... I'm glad that I have this alternative, because I really didn't want to have him boarded somewhere... I know he's going to be bummed that I'm gone for a bit already. I've seen her around the complex before... she feeds the turtles and some of the ibis around the pond out back.

Apparently, there are more than a few kitties in the building, despite official rules ot the contrary. I only knew of 2 others, but I'm thinking that I've only scratched the surface.

Random bit - It is said that Mohammad once cut a portion of his cloak away so that he would not disturb a cat sleeping on the remaining cloth.

Hey, keen! Free wifi on Tri-rail, now. I think that'll make for a lot of happy commuters (myself included).

Moment of Lyric - Thanks jpse! Here's the Mando Mafia version of Jojo the Cannibal Kid. They also do a keen version of All Along the Watchtower. (both are on the Get Up In The Cool album)

Feel free to compare to the original Lyrics posted there.

I'm not too fond of Chase's character on House.

I've been working pretty hard lately... a lot of things on my plate. Work's asking for a lot of things at once... I'm hoping it's because folks are going away for a week, not because they expect it all done tomorrow. Updating three websites (designing two of them) editorial content on about a dozen or so pages and a lot of hardware fiddling.

Something's on the wind about new hires at the office. Upgrades or replacements? Who can say? Scuttlebutt is that RS may be coming back full-time, too... I thought it'd take hammer and tongs to accomplish that. If it's additional bodies, we're going to need more room.

Note to self, get sized at Argenti's After Work, and eyeball any tungsten stuff there.
