take this list with a grain of salt. it's fun to talk about these things that make up aspects of our pop culture. i think this list is probably based on what you should have read through college and possibly grad school. and you should get bonus points for:

--having read other works by the author though you may have not read this particular title.

--points for having read a title in its original language

--understand where the fine line between understanding basic concepts of western culture and elitism blur.

>>>   By the way the pts above aren't mine, but I agree.  :D<<<

[Error: unknown template qotd] That really depends. If it's food, and I'm really hungry, mediocre filler does the job nicely. If I'm doing something for pure enjoyment, I generally prefer a small dash of excellent over a bucketful of just okay. I'd much rather read an excellent short story than read the same thing padded out to a 12-volume set of books.

Rain knocked out comcast connection again - put in another call for service tomorrow. That's a case of me preferring to have a lot of pipeline at average speed rather than poor connectivity at really high speed.

Think of 15 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life or the way you looked at it. They sucked you in and took you over for days, weeks, months, years. These are the albums that you can use to identify time, places, people, emotions. These are the albums that no matter what they were thought of musically shaped your world. When you finish, tag 15 others, including me. Make sure you copy and paste this part so they know the drill. Get the idea now? Good. Tag, you're it!

Here is my list, narrowed to 15.
(Scotto isn't tagging anyone, but is happy to see any other entries)

Let's see... this could be fairly tricky - I'm not sure of music that changed me forever... I've never really been one of those folks to play the same album over and over again... a few that come to mind -

Stuff that was significant to me, and I still dig -

1. Beach boys - I went through a major Beach Boys phase as a kid - Pet Sounds was something that got a lot of play both in my home and on my walkman. The album still cheers me up quite a lot.

2. Beatles - Yellow Submarine / Octopus's Garden (not really an album, but the first music I had as a kid.. that I remember. It wasn't even the Beatles, it was the Sesame Street Version) If I had to pick an actual Beatles  album, I really liked Rubber Soul.

3. Talking Heads - Little Creatures Great album - started me on that Band, and despite the "art student snob" aspect, I really like 'em.
4. Tubes - Outside Inside Got this form a yard sale - I was very pleasantly surprised. (Wild Women of Wongo is what got me to drop 25¢ for it. ) I figure I've gotten well worth my penny a play just for that track.
5. ELO - Time - first Album bought with my own money, played a *lot*

6. Steve Martin - A Wild And Crazy Guy Not really a music album, though it had banjo and The KingTut single.

7. B-52s - Whammy Discovered them late - mostly via gaming with Ray & Kat. (Specifically for Trism)

8. Zombies - Odessey and Oracle This one keeps coming back, and I love it every time. (Most recently for "This will be our year")

9. XTC - Oranges and Lemons  So Sue me... I like Mayor of Simpleton.

10. They Might Be Giants - Lincoln I first heard them on Dr. Demento when I was in High School - I've been hooked since. Hard to believe it's been 20 years+

11. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Very different stuff than the Phil Collins-centric bits in later years. It may be my all-time fave Genesis Album.

12. Chuck Mangione - Chase the Clouds Away - One of the five 8-track tapes I had for my first car, the blue bomber. played repeatedly, because we only had 5 albums, and eventually the AC/DC and Beach Boys tapes wore out.

13. Rusted root - When I Woke - first really fun time with the hippies - post concert. I like them quite a lot.

14. Poi Dog Pondering - Poi Dog Pondering - "and I said YEAH!" - discovered by accident. Thanks, tape-traders in college!

15. Queen - Flash Gordon Soundtrack - FLASH ! AHAHHHHH! HE'LL SAVE EVERY ONE OF US!

I am both amused and a little dismayed that our town uses a very similar font as The Prisoner for all of their emailed town announcements. Mostly Amused.

Just some nutshelling - Let's see:

Trimmed back down to goatee.

Wasn't feeling too well today. Got up at 8, went back to bed at noon, slept until 2.

BHK and I stayed in most of the day, save for a trip to the library and then to Roland's to get spaghetti for tonight's dinner. (Which was super tasty)

Chris was a bachelorette tonight, so she came over had dinner and watched NCIS with us.

After she left, we watched some Mr. Meaty left over from the marathon on Nick a week ago - The show consistently gets a good laugh or two our of me every time.

Speaking of TV - I forgot to mention that we watched the Superbowl - actually quite a good game - I really loved that 100yd snatch and grab. BHK and I still prefer the Puppy Bowl (and the kitten halftime show).

- another meme - pass it around if you want! I'm interested in what other people put. I think I found it first via Kat, or maybe Misti

1. I didn't own any jeans for over 20 years before I got married (Just khakis, and knee-shorts, etc). Now I own 3 pairs, and they're my favorite weekend clothes to wear.

2.I can't wear boots, ice skates, or any long-necked "slip your toe in" type of shoe, due to dropfoot and nerve damage on my left side.

3. Every time I see my wife or one of the kitties, I feel especially blessed.

4. I'm a limited vegetarian (I'll eat eggs and dairy... and crustaceans. - Nothing with less than 5 legs or more than 1 foot.)

5. I think that it is usually pretty easy to be kind to others, and it surprises me when some people seem to go out of their way to be cruel or hostile to strangers.

6. I doubt the existence of the supernatural, but love the stories.

7. I suspect there is life elsewhere in the universe, but doubt that it has visited Earth in a constructed craft.

8. I turn 40 this weekend. I alternately feel about 14 and about 60. So I guess I'm averaging about 37.

9. I have been run over by a car. I was riding a scooter, and the car was doing at least twice my speed. I really don't like being tailgated, and if I have my druthers, I would pull over to let them pass, or slow to a snail's crawl so they would do minimal damage to my vehicle. .

10. I haven't had a driver's license for about 15 years. (I plan to get one sometime in February, if I can get my Florida Records)

11. When I was about 15 I had a Ferret named Freya (renamed from Mitzi when I got her) - who was poisoned by someone in the neighborhood. I would still like to know why - she never hurt anybody, was friendly and fun-loving.

12. I suffer from Mama-bear levels of defensiveness of my loved ones. DO NOT HURT THEM, or I will maul you.

13. I've had problems with my back since I was 16 - ruptured a disc at the library of all places, moving books. I may need surgery again to repair ongoing damage there.

14. I have kept an online journal and website for over 10 years. (about the last 8 years can be found at http://scottobear.livejournal.com )

15. I often overcompensate for being a big guy by being either too shy, or too friendly.

16. I love being able to peek in on the kitties remotely. ( http://pyecam.scottobear.com/ and http://newtcam.scottobear.com/ )

17. I'm a sucker for social gaming - board games, tabletop rpgs, cards, the Wii:whatever brings friends to meet face to face and have fun. (I'm really bad at Chess, but love playing it)

18. I believe in love, and think it's a greater motivator than fear, greed or pain. (and those things are amazing motivators)

19. I wish that I could help more people. I also wish that more people would try to help me, and each other, too.

20. I helped to write software that assists in the recovery of missing children. (Something like 400+ recoveries at last count)

21. If I were able, my phone would only accept incoming emergency calls. (I really don't like to use the phone much)

22. I love movies that incorporate at least a few of the following (some are redundant, and there are often exceptions): giant monsters, monkeys, witty dialogue, martial arts, comedy, are not a remake, 3-d glasses, horror, action, cartoons/CGI, fleshed-out characters and a well written story.

23. I think some things *are* black and white, but most are shades of gray.

24. I would love to use the wind off of the Chesapeake Bay to power our house.

25. I mentally render anthropomorphic almost everything I see.

Still pretty darned psyched about going to see Punxatawney Phil on my B'day. I am concerned a bit about the weather, though. Last year, it was 27 degrees, not horrid, but pretty dang cold.

It's been snowing there all this week, and it's only going to get chillier!

We should stock up the love cube with some hot cocoa, cider, and plenty of blankets, too. Oh, and plenty of Polka Music for the 5 hour drive. :)

Best? I'll just go with first that comes to mind. Maybe I'll come back and fill in more detail - maybe not.

Allison - my love.
Creaky - Back, hip, jaw... a little work around the joints would be nice.
Determined - not much of a quitter here.
Eyesight - one of my better physical traits, at least as far as viewing the surface of things. No x-ray vision, sadly.
Food - When food is prepared to my liking, I get a sense of comfort. BHK is an amazing cook. MD has far better food than FL, too.
Large. (I'm fairly close to Bluto's not as mean Twin - tall and overweight both)
Queries (both SQL, and everyday life)
Vegetarian - (Not too severe - I'll do eggs/diary, and the occasional sea creature with more than 4 legs)
Xorn. Why? Because I have a soft spot in my heart for tripod creatures... the mouth-on-top eating precious metals and gems is a bonus. What was I going to say? X-ray? Xylophone? I nearly went with XXXL, but I figure it's covered at L.
Zombies (though they are getting a trifle passe')

Monday- Off to Physical Therapy after work, and BHK made tasty brats & kraut (with apples and green peppers - veggie bratwurst for me)

Visiting the Ortho tomorrow - PT is not progressing as well as I'd hoped - maybe something more aggressive is in order.

I can do stretches and light aerobics - I'd like to try some weight training / weight lifting to see if I can strengthen up better than I have.

Getting back into Kolchak: The Night Stalker - the episodes have held up pretty well over time. I really liked the UFO episode - ("They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be...") - The monster was never really seen, but it had a good vibe. ( The Moss Monster "Père Malfait" was nifty to see too... I'm surprised Wikipedia doesn't have an entry for that particular beastie. I may fix that later on.)

BHK and I watched the Xmas episode of Monk - not the best, but it was worth it to see Leland sans moustache. I wonder what gigs the actors will get, now that the show is pretty much in the can?

The Psych Holiday show was fairly good, too, but the police side of the cast was pretty thin.
