“INFORMATION ONLY”

Metro is preparing for large crowds and extensive traffic detours during Pope Francis’ three-day visit to Washington, D.C. Tuesday, September 22, through Thursday, September 24.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend events during the Papal visit, which will likely result in crowding and delays on trains and buses, and could produce near Inauguration ridership levels at selected stations.

While many regular commuters are expected—and encouraged—to adjust their work schedules or take advantage of telecommuting, Metro will take steps to provide additional train service during non-peak hours Wednesday and Thursday during the Papal visit. (Metro does not have the ability to add significant capacity during the traditional morning and evening rush hours.)

Riders should expect significant crowding aboard trains and at rail stations near Papal events. Due to crowds following Papal events, riders may need to wait extended periods of time–possibly hours–before re-entering the Metrorail system at certain stations. In addition, bus customers should expect extensive detours and service adjustments as a result of events and associated road closures. All riders are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the Papal visit.

Metro is continuing to work with its external partners to plan for the Mass at the Basilica on Wednesday afternoon, which is expected to place extraordinary ridership pressure on the Red Line at the height of rush hour. Brookland Station, the closest station to the event, is the smallest Red Line station with the ability to accommodate fewer than 5,000 boardings per hour under normal conditions. In order to provide alternates to Brookland Station for the more than 25,000 ticketed guests, Metro and the D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT) are developing plans for supplemental shuttle bus service from two adjacent Red Line stations: Fort Totten and Rhode Island Avenue. Details regarding shuttle bus service will be provided at a later date, but guests attending the Basilica event are encouraged to consider travel options other than Brookland Station. In addition, Brookland Station may be designated as “exit only” for a period of time prior to the Papal event, and “entry only” following the event. This step will effectively double the number of riders that can be accommodated per hour.

Anyone planning to use Metro during the Papal visit is strongly encouraged to purchase fare media in advance. Each traveler needs his or her own SmarTrip or paper farecard, which should be loaded – in advance – with sufficient value to pay for all planned travel. Riders are encouraged to purchase SmarTrip cards in advance to avoid potentially long lines at station vending machines. Riders can purchase SmarTrip cards online prior to September 14 at smartrip.wmata.com/storefront.

Weekend

Feb. 23rd, 2015 06:13 pm
scottobear: (Default)

Snuggles were the high point of the weekend for me. Got to love curling up and being comfy lovey with my family.  Quality time with them is the way things should be.

A little hyper-sensitive and emotional this weekend. – Mr. Morton made me cry.

Frozen Pipes – thankfully it was caught in time, and judicious use of hair dryer, light bulbs and hand-wringing prevented a burst. We have water again, and not in icy sheets across the floor.

Played a lot of Dragon Age Inquisition multi-player – used mic for first time with nice people. Made a few new party members to play with in future. Older dudes, like myself, rather than the kidlets I’m used to hearing on the air. Maybe this party chat thing has something to it after all!

Went to the DC / Baltimore Extra Life guild meetup. Pretty much just DC, primarily due to weather and driving conditions. It was nice to see Aladdin and Chelsea ( not to mention Denyse and Alyse! ) I got to introduce Allison to some folks, too.

Several  Xfinity wifi hotspots did not allow me to log in from silver spring yesterday at 2pm, and again last night at 7pm in North Beach, and again in DC this morning at 6am. When I first logged in, I got a bit worried about being the subject of a man in the middle attack, (don’t do it, kids) so I promptly changed my password via cell phone.

I contacted them and dealt with a dolt who was unable to do the most basic outside of the script thinking. even though I told her that I could connect, fill out a login and got a response saying that I did not have permission to connect, she wanted to tell me it was due to low signal strength or my mistyping my account and password.

After dealing with her for about a half hour, I was ultimately transferred to the WiFi support department, and phone connection was lost – I suspect my initial contact could not dial the phone. My second contact routed me almost immediately, and understood quite well the department I should visit -Comcast WiFi / hotspot support is 1-855-308-9453, by the way – she gave me the number before transferring me, just in case of another dropped call. Maryann, the codename for my third tech contact, mentioned that Xfinity WiFi hotspots are currently not working *ANYWHERE* for Comcast customers, returning the same error for any user and password – and to try connect in 6-8 hours from when I place the call (during my lunch hour, so sometime about 8pm when I get home – thankfully there is an access point next to the house… more fortunately, my personal internet and router are working fine. )

I’ll be interested to see if this is even an issue, and not a blow off item. I haven’t seen anything mentioning an outage on Comcast’s sites, or from an admittedly cursory Google search. Best I could find was -

If you still cannot get online and your Comcast Email or username and password are correct, it is possible that we are having a service issue. Please contact our Customer Support Center at 1-800-XFINITY and select the High Speed Internet service option.

Thanks for nothing, sport. On my poor customer service dual thumbs down to both Verizon and Comcast, at least in the Delmarva and South Florida regions where I have experience.

Went out to lunch with a few coworkers – Kruba Thai and Sushi in DC, a short walk from the office.

Not bad! $11.95 for lunch special – I had drunken noodle, came with a tasty tiny spring roll and miso soup. A reasonable portion, though one of my coworkers who came with me mentioned that it was a great deal more generous on previous visits.

Awesome sink in the water closet -

sink made of a wood plank

that poor ent.

We went at about noon, and it was active, but not super crowded.

Nice atmosphere, worth a visit if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t make a special trip.

TGIF zooming in and out

Glad to have a little weekend ahead of me. Time to catch up with chores and relax with the family. Next weekend is Chris’s birthday and Valentine’s day. I think we’re doing a nice something at the Royal Tea Room.

Comorbidity of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder both seem to have reduced since I’ve started working full-time again.

Other things that I feel have helped me.

The mild workout I get walking around DC, especially when it’s not within a large crowd. I’ve found that I think more clearly if

I enjoy Calm.com.  A little bit of guided meditation makes a great deal of difference for me. It’s not just “woo woo” flaky junk, but consistently and reasonablyproven to be of use. The  phone app is good, though I spend a lot of time in front of a laptop or the kindle, the bigger screen helps me to more easily focus.

I was totally beat yesterday. Long ride home, sore joints, feeling a bit frayed at the edges, the works.  Came home and tried to decompress but wasn’t too successful.

Allison and I split a leftover salad, and added some gruyere quorn “chicken” cutlets for protein. Pretty tasty.

We watched a little bit of Happy Anniversary. Allison zonked out from boredom about 20 minutes in. (Probably also because I was rubbing her feet, and she was bleary / weary, too.) I lasted maybe another 30 minutes, and when I realized she wasn’t waking back up right away,  I decided to try out Transistor. It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t up to Bastion levels of fun. It is pretty, and has a nice soundtrack, too.

I fatigue finally got me at about 10 pm and I hit the sack a bit earlier than usual. I imagine that it wasn’t soon enough.

Got my present of jeans & chinos from the in-laws.  3 new pairs of jeans and 2 khakis. Nice, and was needed. They also brought Allison back some coffee from red rooster, and snacks from the co-op.

Almost Preferable to my shin pain.

Slip-sliding into work today. OPM had a 2-hour delay but I made it in only about an hour after normal schedule. The woman sitting next to me slid on the wet floor and sent a sharply pointed shoe-toe into my right shin. That stung like a son of a bitch.

Random factoid -A 46-sided polygon is a tetracontahexagon using the Greek prefixes.  For the molecular structure of alkanes, the terminology would be reversed (hexatetracontagon).

So… would a 46-sided die be a tetracontahexahedron ?

I can only imagine 20/800.

It must be like getting a super power. Suddenly not having to worry about glasses in the rain, full range of vision… makes me appreciate my eyes that much more. Needing an appliance to get any sense is upsetting to me – hearing aids would be difficult, too.

Heading home a little early tonight - a few inches of snow, and I'd rather get home on my own in a more safe and sane ride. Since I left a little bit after 4:30, I should be home by 6:45 or so.

Hopped the Silver Spring red line to Fort Totten - Green line to the 904 line home.

Maybe we'll do a little distribution of fairy lights tonight? BHK got most of the holiday shopping covered... I'm impressed!

Happy Midweek and Midmonth, Dear Journal. Another day, another 2¢.

Glad to be on the rails home.  I'm chilly and tired, happy to be snuggled up in my homemade scarf. I'm feeling pretty good, though I am more than a little hungry... ready for dinner, for sure.

I was chasing phantoms much of the day today - phone meetings, web searches and inventory taking up the bulk of it. All of it useful, but very time-consuming.  I've got more than a few meetings tomorrow morning, too - I have one user that is very itchy to get his version software in place - I get to teach him about repositories and more to the point, branching/merging. Ideally, this won't be too much of a challenge, but I need to keep things focused and helpful.

Drunk Octopus wants to fight you, but I think you're AOK.

Drunk Octopus Wants to Fight You

Ah well.. I'm going to get back to reading my documentation - until later, dear journal!

On a semi-tangible tangent - I've got a feast of goodies landing on my PS3 and PC lately. Not sure when I'll have time to play it all!

  • Beta for Little Big Planet 2
  • Beta for DC Universe Online
  • Sam & Max - Free! :)
  • Osmos
  • Revenge of the Titans HIB
  • Braid
  • Cortex Command

The last 4 are via the humble bundle 2 - I got one for me, and another for Shaun W as Double-win Christmas Presents - Proceeds go to charity, and we get games!

Watched the last two episodes of Alien in America while BHK snoozed on my arm last night - pretty good.

BHK got some nerds jelly beans (sold as "giant chewy nerds") when we went to Aardvark last weekend.

The Orange were my Fave, Green were hers. (as is our usual) The crunch really added something - I liked them a lot more than standard jellybean fare, even though I like jelly belly soda-pop flavors quite a bit, too.

On the C7 bus this morning, we passed another bus (R3) with the front banner flashing "call 911 - emergency, call police" on the front. I alerted my driver, and she said that it's a common accident - the other guy likely pressed the alarm button by accident and doesn't know better. I suggested that she call the station just to be sure, and she stated that it wouldn't be needed... someone else is bound to do it.

That puzzled me... what if the guy were in actual trouble? I got off the bus and contacted to police to let them know... they haven't called me back. I wonder if they're even following up on it?

I figure it's better be safe than sorry... If I see a sign that says "HELP!!", I'm going to act on it - especially if it's as simple as dialing 3 numbers on my phone.

Fancast - free streaming TV, full episodes (or just a clip )

BHK came up to the office and joined me for a secret lunchtime nosh in the parking lot... nom nom nom. I love seeing her, and a visit in the middle of the day was wonderful.

Pesky that I'm a little behind on my "book bingo" - I keep reading authors whose name end in B, W, or S! Bradbury, Wilder and Stewart aren't helping!

50 things I've done (or, the meme that would not die... ) meme continues with item 31. I...

31.'have been hit in the face with a pool cue... got me in the jaw. It was pretty unexpected - I wasn't doing much of anything, except putting my face where a guy was swinging on someone else. This was when I was 24.

32.'shot 3 day old dunkin' donut munchkins from a wrist rocket slingshot at people, and connected at 20 yards. It stings! That's a powdered sugar version of paintball. Plus, if you're hungry, you can eat your ammo. (Preferably soaked in milk first to soften them up.) This was when I was 15.

While Larry's at Homecoming, Chris is going with BHK and me to a mineral and gem seminar / dinner up the street. Maerten's loves Both the girls to death, and we get invites to all kinds of things like that.

I'm digging Little People- A tiny Street Art Project. Makes me want to keep my eyes extra open!

Watching the original (black and white, not the colorized fouling) Night of the Living Dead on the PSP while riding the train into work is rewarding... especially when the "hands in the windows" scene starts while you're in a tunnel, and the train stops.. and all the cabin's lights go out for about 10 seconds before starting back up again. Good timing. I'm just glad I didn't have Jacob's Ladder in there. Want to watch Night for free? It's in the public domain you can view it there or download it - or just see it in 30 seconds, reenacted by bunnies.

Other classics that are free and legal to download and/or view online - Last Man on Earth for horror, or Suddenly for a bit of Noir.

Starting to feel a bit like October!

Back the regular schedule - at work and chugging nicely - jaw still a bit sore from dentist, plus sore throat from allergies.

Dinner with the in-laws and adam - played a little destroy all humans after tasty chicken-egg noodle type-dish (hot dogs for larry). The canned veggie-chicken was cooked up to be really darn tasty, as was the mushroom gravy. The veggie gravy would be excellent on biscuits with a little black pepper, too, I suspect!

First day of new allergy meds, and my coughing is vastly reduced.

I can't believe that it's been 5 years since the beltway sniper. I certainly never thought that I'd live and work in this region back then. Between that, and Flight 77 six years ago - it's amazing how much people get back to business at hand and swarm all over the pentagon, the metro and so on.

I want a pumpkin and chocolate doughnut.

Attention Christmas Decorations... BACK OFF! It's just barely October! Let me have pumpkins and harvest stuff for a while, why don't ya? Sakes. Lots of neighbors have purple and orange fairy lights out... pretty keen to be in a region with folks in the seasonal spirit.... a "haunted house" is being rigged up at two blocks over, and another at the local fire station... looking forward to that, too.

Speaking of which: I just remembered and trotted out the Halloween background for the website. I really need to work on that some more.

Got another set of fillings today. Front teeth look a lot better now, though the doc couldn't seem to numb one of them... I had a distinct Dustin Hoffman / Marathon Man vibe going for a about 15 minutes.

Is it safe?

Ow.

That said, he did a great job aside from the pain, and I'm very happy now that there are no open nerves with easy air access in my head.

On the way home, we visited "the man" at ATW - see prior entry for photo. He's Oktoberfesting!

Ahh, rise and shine, Washington! It's another beautiful fall day, so stretch and breathe in deep ... but not too deep, unless you enjoy inhaling some of the worst air in the nation. Scientists are putting numbers on information our lungs already knew: the D.C. area "produces more carbon dioxide than several medium-size European countries," the Post reports. This is due primarily to Maryland's coal-burning power plants and our stand-still traffic, though the study notes that this doesn't include other greenhouse gases, like methane. Still, seems like investing in asthma inhalers isn't a bad bet.

My office furniture arrived, so I moved into my new office in the "west wing" today. The new office is a little bit smaller and more oddly-shaped than the old one, but placement is good. Two doors from the prez, one from development, and one from the small conference room.

Hm, Discovered the DC Game Night lj community (also Chez_turtle) . Possibly a go for Sunday side of our walkabout weekend? (since we have Monday off.) - Then again, there's always TCEP14. There's a schedule online now, too. I suspect that I'd prefer the informal local game night to a con, but who knows? I figure that I'd prefer a more casual setting with an informal group.

Anyone that developed vegan Cupcakes of Catan is ok in my book.

Of course, there's the Rennfest, too.

Good grief! So many possibilities.

Maybe I'll work a bit on Guitar / Uke skills while BHK is off with TM whenever they decide to head out. I guess that there's a tentative thought about them going to Delaware. What's to do in Delaware?

Editing the icehousegames.org wiki and the lab rabbit wiki has introduced me to an interesting assortment of people... some seem very laid back, others aggressive to the point of being interpreted as hostile. There are some impatient and controlling types in every bunch... sometimes that's what it takes to get things done, I suppose. Not my style, but I can see where it would be a winning tactic on a wiki. Both are pretty solid resources.

(I've even gone so far as to create a lj-feed of recent changes on the rabbit site so that I can track it on my lj, rather than having to log in and sniff around somewhere else. I've just now done the same to the icehousegames wiki too)

I also got a new shirt for work at good ol' Value City - White with blue pinstripes.

Tonight after work there was a big traffic slowdown...Suitland was a parking lot, and all of i-4 was shut by police and helicopters. A cursory search online mentioned no specifics, and the traffic radio was of little detail as well. I wonder what was up? Chris speculated terrorist stuff, but there was really no hint as to what it might be at all. I made it to Tina's about 30 minutes later than usual. When I realized I wasn't going to be there by 7:15, I called and they ate ahead of me.. I got there in time to watch the last half of Gilmore Girls - BHK and Tina set tentative plans for a girls trip sometime in the near future.

This weekend, BHK and I will be taking a little day trip somewhere... maybe West Virginia to see the mountains, maybe Outpost Games, possibly both on different days.

We still haven't been back to the Compleat Strategist... I want to give 'em a second chance, but it might be a while... too many other places to go and see.
