Emergency Preparedness meeting went ok, plans have to be drawn up for notifications, evacuations, and other levels of distress (boil water, etc)

After the meeting, I took a little walk by the store, an got some of those St. Patty's Day Irish "Potato" candies for BHK (coconut cream rolled in cinnamon - the candy, not Bhk)... dang yummy (both BHK and the candy)! (not these that [livejournal.com profile] missv pointed me to, but dang tasty, nonetheless)

We returned late, and missed going to see 300 with [livejournal.com profile] chrishaas and [livejournal.com profile] cath555 - maybe next go 'round!

Birdwatching / dinner with the In-laws (Bhk made a ploy for them to get Tigger adopted - if they don't take him, we'll very likely integrate him here with us.)

A Florida woman has been awarded $11.3 million in a defamation lawsuit against a Louisiana woman who posted messages on the Internet accusing her of being a "crook," a "con artist" and a "fraud."

Legal analysts say the Sept. 19 award by a jury in Broward County, Fla. — first reported Friday by the Daily Business Review — represents the largest such judgment over postings on an Internet blog or message board. Lyrissa Lidsky, a University of Florida law professor who specializes in free-speech issues, calls the award "astonishing."

It was the moment the fans had been waiting for: headliners John Mayer and Sheryl Crow briefly sharing the Sound Advice Amphitheatre stage together near the beginning of Crow's set. The two jammed out to Crow's My Favorite Mistake, standing back-to-back as Mayer wailed out a funk riff. It was hot.

Of course, Mayer was wearing a bear costume, complete with a big goofy amusement park bear head. But it was still hot, and that's saying something.

Crazy busy activity outside on the way to the bus this morning. Folks inside stores, renovating, and the parking lots and roads seemed fairly bristling with manned vehicles.

October 25, 2006 - 2pm. Going to be good.

vade mecum: a book or other thing that one regularly carries about. (Vade mecum is from Latin, literally meaning "go with me.")

Hm.. outside of essentials, like money, bus pass and keys, I always carry my little tokens (whisker, monkey bead), PDA and digicam (in a utility pouch on my belt).

I wonder what other stuff folks carry daily... do people do rabbit's feet anymore? Pocket dictionaries? Penknives?

"Special Maintenance?" What does that mean?

I really only use the page to keep tabs on a few buddies that can't be bothered to do anything in lj. (or supplement lj with other stuff there) I have a lot of buddies that have multiple journals, and it's sort of odd to me... I can hardly stay on top of this one, these days. Some folk have a type pad and a vox and a GJ an LJ a DJ and whatever other "J's" there are... I don't seem visit many sites hosted by blogger anymore. I wonder why that is?

I'm just glad that I have a "blogroll" that I can click up and down, and see who's updated what, and when.

Warm, still air on the balcony this morning. Newt's lazing on the edge of the table, and we're both enjoying sounds of the outdoors. The fountain in center of the lake, a light variety of birdsong, and Blackie having an argument with Faraday while I type on lappie's mushy keyboard.

Light convo and dumb jokes abounded over at the kids side of the table, good cheer was had by all - surprisingly little drama considering the diversity of lj-folks. A guitarist playing 70's hits was faint but pleasant background noise. There were three tardy arrivals, whose names are eluding me now, in the haze of the morning light. They were cool, too, but on the other side of the table's horizon, so regular convo with them was more difficult. Anyhow, I had a nice time at the "kids table". Tina's haircut is much cuter in person.

I'll post pics later on, when I can be bothered to get up and go to the other room to get the camera. [edit:added.]

The dishonor of Blue Security

There was quite a bit of teeth gnashing across the web throughout the evening yesterday as TypePad, LiveJournal, and all the other hosted Six Apart websites went dark; we learned late in the night that the cause was a “sophisticated distributed denial of service attack” against the sites. Digging a little deeper, though, it doesn’t look like this is a particularly accurate description of what happened — but instead of this being a case of the folks at Six Apart trying to cover up some internal issue, it instead looks like they’re being far too gracious in not revealing more about another company, Blue Security, which appears to have been responsible for the whole disaster. An explanation of this requires a slight bit of background.

I keep getting hit by the aim bot that starts out with "i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?", usually aim user chewableputty.

An explanation of how the bot works is here.

Check out the google search - it seems to be happening to quite a few people.

The greathatsby bot scans LJ users for AIM screen names then sends two people the same message and relays their replies to each other so each person thinks the other person IMed them out of the blue.

Sort of a new version of the 3-way calling prank. I've gotten pings (even when invisible to aim) maybe once a week for the last 6 weeks. a nifty part of the trick is that it auto translates your im name to the bot name when you're in chat, too. so if you identify yourself as "I'm biglug23" it'll say to the other side "I'm chewableputty".

a way around it is to break it up with spaces or some other character - b'i'g'l'u'g'2'3'

I'm not crazy about the new vet that took over Newt's old doctor's practice. I get a distinct "push sales of stuff" vibe, and I'm not going to gamble his health on someone I don't trust implicitly.

Danny came by unexpectedly at 3:30pm.. I returned home at 4pm. Why he didn't call me on my cell phone to say he was in the area is beyond me.

The Mighty Heroes - I was really in love with cartoon as a kid.

"The Monsterizer"
One of the adventures of Rope Man, Strong Man, Diaper Man, Tornado Man and Cuckoo Man. In this installment, the Boris Karloff-like "Monsterizer" turns the city's prominent figures into monsters, and it's up to the bumbling Mighty Heroes to save the day!

"The Frog"
In this installment, they must defeat The Frog, who's flooded the city of Goodhaven in an attempt to steal cash.

Powers :
Well, they all can fly. That's handy.

Rope Man - Stretching, body of rope, later copied by the super globetrotters "Spaghetti man", Sailor
Strong Man - Very Strong, Can Fly, Clumsy Ox, Auto Mechanic
Diaper Man - Brains of the group, his bottle could be used as a throwing weapon, and the extremely elastic nipple at the top could be used to wrap the bottle around objects for retrieval or as a slingshot. The milk in it had rejuvenating properties, and was used to boost Strong Man's strength on more than one occasion.
Tornado Man - Turns into a human tornado. I don't recall him doing any big windy-power stuff.
To this day, I don't know what Cukoo Man's powers were (if any) outside of being able to fly, and knowledge of birds and/or timepieces.

If they ever learned to coordinate attacks, I never saw it happen.

Met with the momster after work yesterday, and reviewed some options regarding the grandmomster. Her brother has power of attorney, but it looks like he's cleaning her out while grandmuh-mah slowly fades from reality on double doses of sedatives and Alzheimer's's. minimal highlights for future ref: mom 25%, di 25%, doug 50%, after sig's college is paid. Speaking of little sig, bigger sig's bought a building in Colorado and will be doing some more real estate shortly. There are a lot of sibling infighting on mom's side of the family. Dad's side just dies early from accidents.

Getting hotter out.. and the dragonflies (and damselflies) are *everywhere*. I remember when I was very young, I thought that they were poisonous and that they stung like scorpions. A few varieties out there, but mostly the brown ones with the striped wings, and the blue-bottle-glass looking damsels.

It may be because it's one of our biggest pet peeves, or it may be because they don't

I'm not a terribly religious man, but I do enjoy the sentiment of the Franciscans.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Some of those can be a little difficult at times.

As an agnostic, I'm not looking for eternal life, but I do want to be a part of making the world better for everyone. Pardoning is something I especially still need to work on. The lure of personal justice and worse, vengeance is quite strong.

Very handy freeware list for windows. I'm especially fond of Windows powertoys allowing me ot put cleartype on my big old CRTs

They also make BBq sauce, and it's quite excellent, not ot mention the silly picture on the front. Apparently they're a fairly local Florida company.

Hm. I'd really like to see what the actual parameters are for lj top 40.

My LJ is now at #8, but it bounces all over the place each update. It doesn't seem to differentiate between individuals (like me), communities (like [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl), or lj-specific journals (like [livejournal.com profile] news)

GP and Kat are in Florida for the next week or so, arrived Saturday sometime. May get together with 'em either tonight or tomorrow, if the stars are right. (They have a very demanding schedule when in town, and understandably so... both sets of parents live down here, and they want 'em as much as they can get 'em.), got to talk to GP yesterday on the phone for a while, and it was a fine time - mentions were made of the insanity of genius, and how people can breed for a longer period now, and family politics. (The youngest child will be the baby, even if they have children of their own. Interesting that both GP and Kat are both last-borns to older parents. My Folks had me when my dad was 23, and Mom was 21.)

(Though it seems other vacationers are Killer bees)

Wonderful rain today... classic Florida big drops in wind that causes it to fall at about a 45 degree angle. I'm glad my porch has enough of a roof overhang to stop things from getting soaked... nice to sit out there, soak up the ozone smell from the thunderstorm, and just soak up the sights and sounds around me. Not a bad time to do laundry... made everything smell sort of rainy-fresh that was hung up out back, though it took forever to dry.

Finally finished re-downloading Dr. Who 2005 season and the Christmas special; Burned the dvd. Hopefully, I'll remember to hand them off to GP and Kat. (and another set to Danny when I see him next week). They look even better in High Def.

Next series, HBO's Rome. I need to get that to a few people on my reading list.

Perversely fascinating. Bad Talk radio.. mostly folks trying to update from the road. Some folks a little drunk... it's fun to her folks monologue in varying degrees of skill. Lost was the best one in a while last Wednesday. Some decent acting, and set pieces.

Designed a mega-trampoline for 2nd Life, and it seemed to go over well with the 3 Sirens crowd. Launch and sound works well, but you still land with a heck of a thump. version 2.5 will be a bit more gentle. Timmy Turtle's pursuit mode is more realistic, too. (if you outrun him, and another person is closer, he'll home in on them.)

Starting this paycheck, I'm slowly, but surely building up a minor stockpile for hurricane season. a wee bit at a time, in the storage closet.

My current plan -

Plenty of food (that doesn't need to be refrigerated or heated) for Newt and me. (shoot for 2 months worth of everything)
Plenty of fresh Water to drink and bathe with.
Extra batteries for the charger for the radio, laptop, desktop and cell phone
Soap, toothpaste, two full first-aid kits
paper towels/paper plates/plastic utensils
garbage bags
hand sanitizer / wet naps
spare medicine / antihistamine
extra candles, 2 of those "shake flashlights"
lots of extra t-shirts, underwear and socks.
extra litter for newt
extra tp for me
spending cash in case of dead ATMs

more to follow as I think of it

I'm glad I'm on the third floor and fairly contained from flooding.

I took over ownership of the [livejournal.com profile] haikuarena since Chrissy isn't really active in lj anymore (over 2 years since her last post). I think I'll see if I can't get it active again.

I just updated the geocode location on my journal... it's a lot simpler to do now.

Now I just have to reapply it to Newtcam and my homepage proper.

Maybe if I get bored enough, I'll write a greasemonkey script and submit it to LJ to sort of automate it... but I know they're not too crazy about stuff messing with the console.

There's also a current location field now for updating via the web, but it seems to be unrelated. (Though that one will make carrying my gps around kind of neat for walkabout posts in the future, or location-encoding photos taken)

Happy V-Day!

Tell someone you love how you feel today!

Do it again tomorrow. Make it a habit.

I haven't held a sand dollar for nearly three years. When I was a kid living on Marathon key, we used to pick up sun-bleached ones by the bucketful. I remember painting them and giving them as valentines to some of the folks in the area where we lived... at the time, I had no idea that it was the dessicated skeleton of a five-jawed sea creature related to the sea urchin. That makes me think that they're even more cool now. I never thought about it, but they'd make a pretty neat sort of decorative scale mail if sewn together.

I've been using BANG! as my interjection (mp3) of choice lately, thanks in part to GP's meddling and Kat's haircut commentary.

temperatures have begun to stabilize and any further falls between now and 800 am will be small. most of the immediate coastal locations will remain in the lower 40s with the suburbs generally
in the upper 30s. - I pity the northern states, if it's this cold here.

Bro told me his house was robbed, then the story changed to some guy taking all the money for some job he ran, then changed to is girlfriend taking it. Whatever. Upside, he *does* sound a lot sharper.. I'm likely to believe him when he say's he's not using.

Moment of Lyric - mp3 - via

If you go away, on this summer day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in the summer sky
When our love was new and our hearts were high
When the day was young and the night was long
And the moon stood still for the night birds' song
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

But if you stay, I'll make you a day
Like no day has been or will be again
We'll sail the sun, we'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees and worship the wind
Then if you go, I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to hold in my hand
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

If you go away, as I know you will
You must tell the world to stop turning 'til
You return again, if you ever do
For what good is love without loving you
Can I tell you now as you turn to go
I'll be dying slowly till the next hello
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

But if you stay I'll make you a night
Like no night has been or will be again
I'll sail on your smile, I'll ride on your touch
I'll talk to your eyes that I love so much
But if you go I won't cry
Though the good is gone from the word goodbye
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

If you go away as I know you must
There'll be nothing left in the world to trust
Just an empty room full of empty space
Like the empty look I see on your face
I'd have been the shadow of your dog
If I thought you might have kept me by your side
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away
