So... a nice little reprieve from Gustav for New Orleans. I hope everyone (Louisiana, Florida, and everywhere else) continues to dodge Hanna, Ike and Josephine. Note 3 years ago today, below.

The DNC homepage makes no mention of John McCain. The RNC page has a ton of attacks on Obama and Biden. That's something. Not sure what, but it's something.

BHK put me on to Disaster Dioramas - I'm partial to the Hindenburg, but I suspect that she's more into the Titanic.

Tonight we went to Ledos, and got the greasiest white pizza ever. Tummy trouble is likely to follow. we didn't bother keeping half of it. I hate wasting money and food - I suspect it'll take a lot for us to return there. Got maggie moo's as a after yuck treat - I got mint chocolate chip with chocolate sprinkles and brownie bits - BHK got carrot cake ice cream with peanut butter sauce. It was pretty good, if odd. I've got a love-creeped out relationship with cake-batter flavored ice cream.

Added bonus was at the photography center next door - we saw an orange kitten (about 3 mos) named Charlie playing with his humans... it was very adorable, and we got to talk to the family a bit. BHK thinks it might be time to get a portrait with the lads... though I'm not sure how well-behaved Newton would be for sit-down pictures. Pye is mellow enough, but it is a strange and new environment.

I forgot to mention that on Saturday we went to Leonardtown - skipped witch rock this time, and instead visited a few nifty bookstores - including one made from an old bar. I can't remember the name but it was a nifty old-school mass of books just reaching back into the far back - also went back to White rabbit and got BHK a Raven Puppet to go with her Edgar Allan Poe, a yarn store (Crazy for Ewe ) with a hostess who was very nice and kept staring at BHK's lime-vanilla ice, a model train shop and the do-dah deli... later, we went to Aardvark to pick up Pentago - BHK beat me 5-2... a sound victory indeed.

The future looks bright and shiny. I'm pretty dang giddy about the whole thing. Stayed up late last night talking out plans and reflecting on possibilities. I'm ready to get rolling with it fairly immediately.

Metals to consider -

Titanium / Tungsten / Palladium / Zirconium

I'd still really like it if there was a hardy green metal, (not just weathered copper) but I don't suppose the GLC is going to help me there.

Hmm.. the new toy has some potential.

PSP gets price cut, GPS, camera, VoIP and future media download service

Use the psp as a stealth cam / internet phone and geocache toy? All of those are something worth sniffing out. I seem to like it for everything (multimedia/web-surfing) *but* gaming, which is just gravy.

All bus and train service is out today, so I get to work from home! (Broward County Transit (BCT) will resume service at Noon weather permitting. Buses will operate on their Sunday/holiday schedule. Paratransit services will also resume at Noon. Tri-Rail trains will not be operating on Wednesday. Regular Tri-Rail passenger service is expected to resume service tomorrow morning) I wonder how many folks are staying in?

Big Kahuna is going into the office, and I'm taking call from the house... everyone else is free as a bird today.

2,905 Broward county folks lost power (as of 11pm) but I was unaffected. (total of about 6800 in miami 7,862 customers without electricity as of noon Wednesday, most of them in the tri-county area)

At 5 a.m. ET, Ernesto was about about 45 miles southwest of Miami and was moving north-northwest near 8 mph.

Ernesto's top winds remain near 45 mph, and it could be downgraded to a tropical depression later in the day. The storm is expected to remain over Florida for a day, weakening but still producing rainbands containing strong, gusty winds.

Hurricane Katrina Anniversary Tree Planting Ceremony - Due to the impending approach of TS Ernesto, this meeting has been canceled.

Ok, I think that's sort of funny.

MARYLAND DOG CLINICS IN NEED OF BLOOD

According to Maryland veterinarians, there is currently a shortage of canine blood at the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank (EVBB). The number of blood donations tends to drop in the summer, although dogs still have accidents and illnesses that require transfusions. In order to get inventory levels back above safe available levels, vets are putting out the call to Maryland's dog owners for donations. Canine donors must be healthy, between nine months and eight years old, and weigh at least 35 pounds; the entire procedure takes about 10 to 20 minutes. And it's great to know that donations go to good use—last year, donations made in Maryland were used to help dogs who were injured during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

Buses will be running until 3pm today, so I'll cruise in to work at normal time, but will probably high-tail it a bit early. I'm guessing that the office will be closed tomorrow due to the storm. Hurricane Ernesto looks to be now downgraded to a tropical storm status for us. Not a bad "fire drill" warning.

Lots of lines at the gas stations, but everyone still seems fairly civil.

Sounds like Kev did ok at Gitmo - 40 mph winds is all that whooshed by there.

My current plan -

Plenty of food (that doesn't need to be refrigerated or heated) for Newt and me. (shoot for 2 months worth of everything)
Plenty of fresh Water to drink and bathe with.
Extra batteries for the charger for the radio, laptop, desktop and cell phone
Soap, toothpaste, two full first-aid kits
paper towels/paper plates/plastic utensils
garbage bags
hand sanitizer / wet naps
spare medicine / antihistamine
extra candles, 2 of those "shake flashlights"
lots of extra t-shirts, underwear and socks.
extra litter for newt
extra tp for me
spending cash in case of dead ATMs

more to follow as I think of it

I'm glad I'm on the third floor and fairly contained from flooding.

Breakfast of blueberry muffins and cold water this morning. Nice christening of the house.

No DSL yet at the new place, and my repair shop told me what I already knew... dead IDE and drives on Bigger brain. Thank goodness for warranty, as I need a new motherboard and pair of Hard drives. Downside is that the parts will take about a week, and all old data on there is toast. A lot of movies that hadn't been yet burned to DVD were lost, but easily recovered. I'm thankful that most of my sentimental pictures and movies are saved online as well as locally. I've got a lot of stuff to reinstall, Newtcam and etc once it gets back home.

Lucky for me Lappie works fine, even on dialup! I just called Bellsouth, and it looks like I'm without DSL until 12/16 "thanks to the hurricane". I call shenanigans on that, but it's not a big deal until I get bigger brain up and running anyhow.

Newt is enjoying all of the new surfaces, and already know how to use the bathroom. Nice comfy evening on the new bed.

No pictures until I find a wireless point to toss images from the palm, but I'm taking before and after shots as the place comes together.

GeotargetFound out the my last living Grandmother (Momster's Momster) is in hospice now. She's deteriorated quite rapidly, and they don't know if it'll be two months or two weeks. She's not in any pain, and seems to be at peace. Her lucidity is variable.. she was sounding good last week, and recognized her son and granddaughter... she gets her hair and nails done, and appears to enjoy that.

Not moving *all the way* in today, just getting the bulk of stuff over. Mr. N and I will remain at the old place for another week while the bathroom gets finished...I'd rather kick back ion a realm with running water and a potty. So, I'm going to have to put Newt in bathroom lockup while the truck gets loaded...he's not going to be too keen on that, but the boy'll cope. I like the idea of sliding into the new place gently.

Tropical Storm Gamma... it's following Wilma's track. hopefully it'll ease up before it gets worse. Nice Thanksgiving gift! The upside... not nearly as much loose stuff to blow around this time!

Fortunately Sandrino says "Its only a tropical storm and it will be moving very fast. I wouldn't worry too much. It's not going to ge in the Gulf of Mexico and even if, the ocean is not as hot as it was four weeks ago. Relax."

I can't watch TV shows that place in hospitals, at least not around the anniversary of my father's death or his birthday. I had an extended crying jag last night when I remembered that his birthday is coming up in about 2 weeks. First time I've really cried for quite a while. Ultimately cleansing, but think I hurt my side a little bit as a result. Newt was a great comfort to me.

I miss my dad. I miss the way my brother was when he was 12. I think that I get along with my mother better these days than I ever had as a kid.

The office has decided not to pay salaried folks for time away from work due to Hurricane Wilma... I'm going to point them to Hurricane Wilma Disaster Unemployment Assistance. To determine eligibility for Wilma DUA (or standard unemployment benefits), start by contacting the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (Florida unemployment office) or filing an unemployment claim through same by 11/28/2005. For information about other types of Hurricane Wilma disaster assistance, browse the FEMA and FDEM sites.

I'm safe... I worked every day save for 2, and those two days I gave training and tech walk-through to our rep in Texas. I think that everyone else save for ECN and myself will end up getting docked a little more than week's pay. (I wonder if the Big Kahuna will cut herself, too?)

GeotargetGood News / Bad News, dear journal.

Good News: I have full power at my apartment. Air Conditioning and Lights, TV, etc.

Bad News: Big Brain's Hard Drive is crapping out... I can't seem to keep him awake for more than a moment or two before he cycles through and reboots... I'm going to estimate he needs about $400 worth of repairs... mirror the giant drives over to new drives, basically. He had started to die earlier.. I thought it was a power issue, but I see now that it's even worse.

Good News: I dropped it off and it's still covered under the extended warranty.. (this big brain was bought 12/21/03, and he's got 2 years parts and labor covered - a little over a month left to freshen up - I'm also having them do a full system peek, just in case the video card is starting to crap out)

I expect to have it back at HQ within 7 working days. Meanwhile, lappie is a handy backup, just word processing and the like... no major gaming for a week or so.

I've begun sorting the apartment out... packing things into boxes and skimming down to the very basics. All of my books should be ready for transport by the end of the weekend.

Lots of 4-way stops going on until late December, it seems.

State utility regulators Wednesday approved an fuel-cost increase for Florida Power & Light Co. that will hike an average customer bill by 19 percent starting Jan. 1. The increase would drive an average 1,000 kilowatt hour monthly bill up by $16.99 to $108.61, up from $91.62.

I'm on day 17 of having no A/C, no Fridge, no Big-brain computer and no stove or microwave oven. Not really a tragedy. I do fine since I have hot showers, some lights and some internet resources. "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
-Anonymous

I used to believe that. Sadly, I've uncovered some seriously malicious stupidity in recent days. Why have one, instead of both?

Also, whatever happened to "Lead by example"? In most gigs the last decade or so, it's been a case of "Do as I say, not as I do."

Ah well, no big whoop. I'm not going to harp on the limitations of others. Meanwhile, I have a new place to get ready for a move-in and folks to be friendly with.

This weekend, I put the starting moves on boxing up all non-essential goods... I think that I can get everything over to the new place in one trip of a U-haul. The tile is down already, and it's getting an acid wash shortly... New sinks, a new commode and running a little cable for phones will happen over the course of this and next week.

Basic condo info - One bedroom, third floor, pool access, washing machine two doors from my place, ($.75 a load) a clubhouse with a pool table, library, ping-pong table and meeting area (would've been fantastic for gaming back in the day.) Ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room, both high enough for me to walk under comfortably. Maintenance covers the cost of basic cable... I'm not a big fan of Comcast's south florida service, but free is free. A lot of nice grounds to walk, with a fairly large iguana population by the lake. Walking distance to Federal Highway, which is a major mass-transit backbone. Central Air. Built in 1969. New Fridge and dishwasher. BBQ grills outside here and there. Garbage disposal. Covered parking. Super tiny elevator, or groovy large steps. Hurricane Shutters.

About here. ( about 16 miles north of where I live now).

Looks like I'll be getting out of Ft. Laud right before Hav gets back from Gitmo.
