scottobear: (apophenia)
I was a little saddened to hear that there.com is closing on 3/9/2010. I had a lot of fun during my time at the site, and still have a nice friendship with some folks from there as a result. I wonder what ever happened to the rest of the gang, like Whims and Chias?

I'm pretty happy to see the theme live on in second life (I'm there *very* infrequently as scottobear bergson), and even more so in Playstation home (a bit more frequently on PSN as scottobear) .

Went to Walmart for some supplies, and I ended up grabbing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood for $19... That's it for ps3 titles, until I play one of 'em to the end.

My current catalog for the PS3 is -
  • Lego Indiana Jones: Original Adventures - we love all games lego - the only one that hasn't totally enchanted us yet is lego batman for the wii, but that may change, too.
  • Little Big Planet: Game of the year version - my current fave. easy on the eyes, tricky levels, and an online community that's fantastic.
  • Uncharted 2 - my first game, and I really like it a lot - haven't played it too much, but it's a hoot thus far
  • Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - hard, but with infinite lives, I suspect I'll make it through eventually. good to have a western.
  • The Darkness - pretty evil, but a solid game. I've been fortunate in my selection thus far.

Aside from that, thing found today that disturbed me somehow - um, no. ms. easter bunny!

26 letters about me... today's installment, A, B, C, & D

A - atari 400 - first telecomm 'puter/ bbs /fidonet I actually had a couple of programmable computers before the atari, but that was the one that got me into telecommunications - a stack 6-high of 5 1/4 floppy drives kept messages on the "halls of gladsheim"... Brent had a regular column that'd be considered an 'opinion blog' now. every week he'd type up something a little controversial, and invite comments and debate. more activity came from folks playing turn-based trade wars or star web. back in the day, I only had one phone line, and the first modem was110 bps, soon upgraded to 300/1200/2400 and a phone line for each as I collected a paycheck. (rollover lines meant first open line went to the speediest connection available.... 110 was rough for folks trying to game, even text based. in the time you'd complete one turn, mr 2400 could do 23. perfectly fine for the message boards, though. We tracked old D&D game notes and ran a simple dice server for the heck of it. Brent's Alias there was Loki, mine was Heimdall, Chad was Fenris, and the rest of the crew had fairly non-Norse names. Even my pop had a login as Allfather. 5 way text chat was possible, but usually any chat was just me at the console, warning folks that the bbs was going down for "maintenance", which usually meant I had friends over that wanted to play 4-player M.U.L.E.

The internet has made a lot of things simpler and cheaper, but there is a lot of nostalgia tied up in those times and 8-bit technologies.

B - Books - I love to read, and it shocks me when I hear folks say that they can't stand to do the same. It surprises me even more when someone says 'I like to read, but haven't read a book in years. '

How sad is that? a simple pleasure, easily fulfilled, not done in *years*. Not even a few pages at lunch or before bed? different folks, different priorities, I suppose.

C - Charity - I feel that it's important to help folks that can't help themselves, especially children and animals. so many out there in need, and I can afford to invest a reasonable percentage of time or thought to help make the world a bit better. it makes me more than a little sick to see someone buy a $8000 purse rather than getting a similar one for $50, and giving 7000 healthy meals to the hungry, instead. again, priorities differ.

D - Derek, my brother - I love him, but I don't much like him these days. He can't seem to break out of self-destructive habits, and is willing to take others down into that pit with him. I fear that he's a lost cause, but hope springs eternal.

Building still abandoned, long since last hurricane season. Silence and desolation, windows like the eye pits in bone picked skulls. There are even some small patches of vegetation rooted and growing in pockets wind and rain had carved in the walls. Looks dead.. worse, synthetic, and never lived in.

Note all screens are ripped out, or gone completely, and roofing remnants on the balcony. Class in the windows have been replaced, but that's about it. roof still has a blue tarp... this hurrican season starts in about a week.

Funny.. SoFlaChris and I discovered Plazes within about 5 minutes of one another. Newtcam was added.

On the way to the meeting yesterday, a 16-wheeler ran over a piece of steel, which spun off to the right, and caused Elsie's window to explode into the cab of the car. She was lucky... it took a big divot out of her doorframe. If it had hit an inch earlier, she'd probably be at least in the hospital right now. Fortunately, she's unhurt. I got a spray of tiny glass fragments in my lap, too. I think this'll be a good opportunity to clean out her car.

Brush fire caused me to bail out of SL unceremoniously. Launched an evac, and looks like folks are all ok.

Adopt Sea Turtles for Mother's Day!

A mother sea turtle will travel thousands of miles to move from feeding areas to mating areas and then to her preferred beach to lay her eggs.

It is a long crawl up the sandy beach where she makes her nest before she swims back to sea. Wouldn't your mom travel such great lengths for you as well? This Mother's Day, show her how much you appreciate all she's done for you with an adoption of a sea turtle from WWF's Online Adoption Center.

spare medicine / antihistamine
extra candles, 2 of those "shake flashlights"
lots of extra t-shirts, underwear and socks.
extra litter for newt
extra tp for me
spending cash in case of dead ATMs

more to follow as I think of it

Man faces jail time for selling crack

A City of Poughkeepsie man faces a stint in jail for dealing crack in the city last year.

Landocalrissan Butler, 25, of Winnikee Avenue, entered a guilty plea Tuesday in Dutchess County Court to attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Butler told Judge Thomas J. Dolan he had five small bags of crack in his pocket Dec. 22 when police arrested him on Morgan Avenue. He said he intended to sell the drugs.

In exchange for his plea, Butler was promised a sentence of six months in jail and five years on probation. He will also be required to forfeit a cell phone and $432 police said he obtained through illegal drug sales.

Butler remains jailed pending his sentencing, scheduled for April 4.

GeotargetDreamt that I was reading a comic book about a superhero/villain who wears a bandoleer of syringes fitted with fins so they act as throwing darts - uses the drugs for various effects, knockout, truth serum, hallucinogens. Not nearly as effective as a gas or launched from a dart gun, but I was asleep, and my subconscious mind wasn't interested in any editorial commentary.

He was fighting "The Collective Man", One of my Favorite old riffs on duplication, run backward - Five brothers who could merge into one guy that had 5x the strength and constitution of a normal man. In emergencies, he could also tap into the combined power of the entire Chinese populace, too, though I have no idea how that worked, even in comic book logic. The strength of a billion men, I guess? I don't think all the Chinese people in the world merged into him when he used that ability, though I think that'd be a pretty interesting proposition.

I have no idea what the guy with the syringe-darts thought he was going to do against CM... I guess he could up the dosage by five if he wanted to pull some shenanigans.

GeotargetThis card is my problem with compusa, along with really poor communication or support /offering of alternatives.

In a nutshell, it's been since November 10th that my Computer has been at the shop... everything else needing repair is fixed according to them.

Verto GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Video Card, AGP, 256MB DDR
Nvidia
Manufacturer: PNY
Mfg Part #: VCGFX595APB
Product Number: 308120
$499.88

However, that bad boy has been out of stock at the manufacturer, and at all known compusa stores in a 50-mile radius for the last 8 weeks.

With a $500 price tag, I'm obliged to wait, because I really can't drop that chunk of change on something that I should be getting under warranty.

The guys at the shop have given me two timelines, both of which have passed, now. I'm not quite sure what I can do, save for waiting.

Meanwhile, I have to do my work on poor ol' Battered lappie, My Toshiba satillite back from a time when Windows Me (I've long since replaced that with win2k pro) was "cutting edge".

I'd say that the only time I've had worse customer service/ communication was with Comcast... I have since boycotted them, though I've heard that they might not be so bad in other areas outside of SoFla.

Not having big brain has cost me some very significant social chat and play time in 2nd Life, LAN party activities with the old FMM crowd are out of the picture... plus, all of my downloaded movies / Netflix DVD archives are ground to a halt while the machine is gone... not to mention a lack of Newtcam.

I never realised how many people watched good ol' Newt during the day... I've gotten somthing like 80 emails politely requesting when he'll be back online again. If Big Brain is down another week, I'll hook Newtcam up to Lappie so folks can get an orange kitty fix.

I can only imagine what happens when pretty girls shut off their webcams. I suspect horny stalker-type guys aren't nearly as polite as cat fanciers.

Lo! in the middle of the wood,
The folded leaf is woo’d from out the bud
With winds upon the branch, and there
Grows green and broad, and takes no care,
Sun-steep’d at noon, and in the moon
Nightly dew-fed; and turning yellow
Falls, and floats adown the air.
Lo! sweeten’d with the summer light,
The full-juiced apple, waxing over-mellow,
Drops in a silent autumn night.
All its allotted length of days,
The flower ripens in its place,
Ripens and fades, and falls, and hath no toil,
Fast-rooted in the fruitful soil.
~ Tennyson

Newton had a great Christmas morning... I gave him a gift bag full of paper wads. He went for it pretty confidently, took a paw, turned it on its side and grabbed one, and smacked it around. I have little doubt that he'll use the big bag as a hideout, too. I've got a spray bottle of "liquid catnip" but haven't used it yet.. I was going to recharge some of his toys with it, but he's still pretty fond of grabbing them, and raking with his rear claws, purring all the while without needing one. Newt gave me my favorite present, too, just some morning lovies.

Went to Christmas party at Cathi's Folks... it was lovely, a beautiful study in organized chaos. I wasn't Santa's helper this year, Joe took the role, which was pretty awesomely done. He did a great job, and the gazillion kidlets ate it up.

Speaking of eating things up, Mama 'borg sent me home with a pile of food. stuffed shells, Christmas cookies, cake, cauliflower salad, and muchy good cheer. Stephen and Elizabeth are so much older now, Allie and Nicole are both quite grown, too! A lot can happen to a kid in 4 years. Nicole looks like 16 or more at 14, and I can't believe Steven's old enough to drive now.

Mayah and her sis were running pretty wild on holiday sweets, santa excitement and general overstimulation. Dave had already gotten his fill of the insanity a bit before I arrived, but he's very good about keeping his cool. Cathi thrives in whirlwind chaos, so it wasn't a big thing for her.

I met Rosie at last, and she's a sweetheart, and her son is Mayah's "boyfriend" (they're both 5).

I still possess the power of being a big teddy bear to the kidlets. Apparently, I'm a big, soft jungle gym for tykes to maul, which was fine by me. Allie was doting on me once I commented on how good the cookies she made were.( She was the star kid of the party, anyhow. Usually the youngest, she got a chance to shine by being the "big girl" with the littler kidlets by helping and leading without being bossy. )

Dick did a good job communicating without his robo-voice... his prosthetic allows him to cap off airflow and talk with a hoarse whisper now, rather than the cylon-voicebox he was using before. He's had a lot carved out of him during his fight with the big C. Mouth, throat, lung, but now he's healthy as a proverbial horse.

Ouch... lost 'net for a little bit yesterday! Pesky, I wanted to check out Herm, make sure she was doing ok.. apparently she's a little worse for wear, but her ankle's getting better.

I'm glad she's mending nicely.

Moment of lyric - mp3

Supercar, Supercar,
With beauty and grace, fast as can be, watch it flying through the air.
It travels in space, or under the sea, and it can journey anywhere.

Supercar, Supercar,
It travels on land, or roams the skies, through the heavens' mighty rage
It's Mercury-manned, and everyone cries, "it's the marvel of the age!"
Supercar, Supercar, Supercar!

Plus it starred a Monkey, man's hairy little cousin.

Still feeling a little mopey, and more than a little like a cave-bear. I'm really just not in the mood for interaction with loud, noisy little peeps today. Both Friday and Monday have been cranky workdays. Today would do well to change the pattern.

Usually, Autumn will lower gravity, not raise it.

Poor Herm got her ankle hurt on vacation... I hope she's feeling better soon. Sweeties shouldn't get owies.

A group of children, all wearing ape masks, rides their bicycles to the park for a picnic. Along the way, all but one are eliminated for violating basic bike safety rules.

One Got Fat: Bicycle Safety (1963)

Edward Everett Horton narrates. Mr. Horton provided the wonderful narration for Jay Ward's Fractured Fairy Tales on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, too.

Best Bike safety film, ever. I love how they keep getting killed, but the rest continue on to picnic. Nelly was cute when angry, but Filbert is my favorite demise.

See also the remixed trance music video. Hooray for open source!

Doing blood yesterday was pretty cool... I watched a M*A*S*H marathon on the hallmark channel. I keep forgetting how much I liked that show as a kid... I can't believe the episodes I watched were 30-some years old. I've added all the seasons to my netflix.

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] mootpoint!

I repeat my birthday wish from five years ago -

"I hope you get lots of cake and balloons and good sex and laughter today, and from now on!"

Watched the first two episodes of Lost's second season.. I'm please that they're keeping it interesting, and that I've heard a specific endpoint was found, rather than it being an ongoing series, never coming to a resolution.

Payday!

George W. Bush cover of "White Lines" - other great mixes, too.

Speaking of mixes... *best mix of The Shining trailer ever* (happy skippy) and the zombie/horror remix of West Side Story

Again, no 2L... issues "finding server domain name". A reboot of the router seemed to help quite a bit. system is not fond of these power cycles at all. Tomorrow Herm goes on her island vacation, with a collection of pals. The lucky duck!

Bro's got some issues with his rehab place.. apparently the guy he's rooming with is using, and temptation is great. He sounds so lucid and on top of things.. I'd hate for him to go back to where he was just a little while ago.

Heading down to river walk later just to stretch the legs and you take advantage of ECN on call today.

HP and I found some really neat new things in 2l yesterday... playground with swings, teeter-totter and a pagoda area that is gorgeous.

I've got to make an appointment with bro's boss, setup a website with him. Air conditioning repair, etc.

I'm tempted to make this my 404 page.

Moment of Lyric - (mp3 - via)

I got bitten by a radioactive bug
I tried an experimental drug
I went out for a stroll on a gamma testing range
I found an enchanted Uru cane
I made a serum that made me small
I modified the serum so it would make me tall
I got radioactive isotope in my eye
A dying alien helped me accessorize
I gained the proportionate strength of a spider
Now I'm invincible and I can fly
I lost my sight and my other senses were heightened
I'm gonna put on my pajamas and go fight crime

Nice day with Dan yesterday.. did lunch and hung out for a few hours. We talked about a few ideas for second life designs, and I think some have real potential... not much beats the bee-gun however.

I think Tater tots and sushi are a natural combo. I may be the only person to feel that way.

Got to spend some lovely time on a pirate quest in 2nd L with HP, too. Always a pleasure to hang out with her. We won some awesome snow globe trophies.

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling
A little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath
And I get real high
And I scream
From the top of my lungs
What's going on?
