What does it do?

This project configures your Raspberry Pi to connect to the Internet through ethernet, and share that connection over WiFi.

What do you need?

  • A Raspberry Pi, model B.
  • A boot SD card for the Raspberry Pi.
  • A USB WiFi device that supports “Access Point” mode.
  • An Ethernet cable to connect to the local network.

Please make sure you Wifi dongle supports Access Point or Master Mode

  • Edimax does NOT support Access Point (UPDATE 7/9/13: Edimax DOES support Access point, tutorial here: Raspberry Hotspot with Edimax USB WiFi Adapter)
  • AirLink 101 / AWL5088 does NOT support Access Point
  • Panda Ultra, Mid-Range and 300Mbps Wireless N adapters support Access Point
  • Ralink RT5370 and RT5372 DO support Access Point

What skill level is required?

This project does not require any coding or compilation. Very basic Linux and networking knowledge would be useful, but not essential.

To edit a configuration file (for example /etc/udhcpd.conf) use the following command

sudo nano /etc/udhcpd.conf

You will find yourself in a simple editor. Move around using the arrow keys. To save the file press Ctrl-o. To exit press Ctrl-x.

How does it work?

The Raspberry Pi is configured as a WiFi Hotspot, just like you would see in an internet cafe. It allows you to connect to the internet over WiFi using the Raspberry Pi as the bridge to the internet. The basic steps are

  • Enable a WiFi Access Point and broadcast on the channel of your choice
  • Assign dynamic IP addresses to any device that connects to WiFi network
  • Join the WiFi and Ethernet networks together by using Network Address Translation

Instructions

The following steps were performed on Raspbian but should be much the same on any Debian-based distro.

1. Install the necessary software.

sudo apt-get install hostapd udhcpd

2. Configure DHCP. Edit the file /etc/udhcpd.conf and configure it like this:

start 192.168.42.2 # This is the range of IPs that the hostspot will give to client devices.
end 192.168.42.20
interface wlan0 # The device uDHCP listens on.
remaining yes
opt dns 8.8.8.8 4.2.2.2 # The DNS servers client devices will use.
opt subnet 255.255.255.0
opt router 192.168.42.1 # The Pi's IP address on wlan0 which we will set up shortly.
opt lease 864000 # 10 day DHCP lease time in seconds

Edit the file /etc/default/udhcpd and change the line:

DHCPD_ENABLED="no"

to

#DHCPD_ENABLED="no"

You will need to give the Pi a static IP address with the following command:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 192.168.42.1

To set this up automatically on boot, edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and replace the line “iface wlan0 inet dhcp” to:

iface wlan0 inet static
  address 192.168.42.1
  netmask 255.255.255.0

If the line “iface wlan0 inet dhcp” is not present, add the above lines to the bottom of the file.

Change the lines (they probably won’t all be next to each other):

allow-hotplug wlan0
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet manual

to:

#allow-hotplug wlan0
#wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
#iface default inet dhcp

3. Configure HostAPD. You can create an open network, or a WPA-secured network. A secure network is recommended to prevent unauthorized use and tampering, but you can also create an open network. To create a WPA-secured network, edit the file /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf (create it if it doesn’t exist) and add the following lines:

interface=wlan0
driver=nl80211
ssid=My_AP
hw_mode=g
channel=6
macaddr_acl=0
auth_algs=1
ignore_broadcast_ssid=0
wpa=2
wpa_passphrase=My_Passphrase
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
wpa_pairwise=TKIP
rsn_pairwise=CCMP

Change ssid=, channel=, and wpa_passphrase= to values of your choice. SSID is the hotspot’s name which is broadcast to other devices, channel is what frequency the hotspot will run on, wpa_passphrase is the password for the wireless network. For many, many more options see the file /usr/share/doc/hostapd/examples/hostapd.conf.gz

If you would like to create an open network, put the following text into /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf:

interface=wlan0
ssid=My_AP
hw_mode=g
channel=6
auth_algs=1
wmm_enabled=0

Change ssid= and channel= to values of your choice. Note that anyone will be able to connect to your network, which is generally not a good idea. Also, some regions will hold an access point’s owner responsible for any traffic that passes though an open wireless network, regardless of who actually caused that traffic.

Edit the file /etc/default/hostapd and change the line:

#DAEMON_CONF=""

to:

DAEMON_CONF="/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf"

4. Configure NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT is a technique that allows several devices to use a single connection to the internet. Linux supports NAT using Netfilter (also known as iptables) and is fairly easy to set up. First, enable IP forwarding in the kernel:

sudo sh -c "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward"

To set this up automatically on boot, edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf and add the following line to the bottom of the file:

net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

Second, to enable NAT in the kernel, run the following commands:

sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o wlan0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A FORWARD -i wlan0 -o eth0 -j ACCEPT

These instructions don’t give a good solution for rerouting https and for URLs referring to a page inside a domain, like www.nu.nl/38274.htm. The user will see a 404 error. Your Pi is now NAT-ing. To make this permanent so you don’t have to run the commands after each reboot, run the following command:

sudo sh -c "iptables-save > /etc/iptables.ipv4.nat"

Now edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and add the following line to the bottom of the file:

up iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.ipv4.nat

5. Fire it up! Run the following commands to start the access point:

sudo service hostapd start
sudo service udhcpd start

Your Pi should now be hosting a wireless hotspot. To get the hotspot to start on boot, run these additional commands:

sudo update-rc.d hostapd enable
sudo update-rc.d udhcpd enable

At the completion of these instructions, your Pi should be providing a wireless network and allowing other devices to connect to the Internet. From my experience, the Pi makes a decent access point, although with cheaper WiFi dongles range will be fairly limited. I haven’t stress tested this setup, but it seems to work fairly well and is handy when a “real” access point isn’t available. I wrote most of the instructions from memory, if you find any errors/typos I’ll correct them.

This tutorial originally was a post on the Raspberry Pi forum here, you can reply to that topic if you have issues. Thanks go to all the people who tested my tutorial on the forum, and to poing who contributed the WPA HostAPD config.
Please make sure you Wifi dongle supports Access Point or Master Mode

At the command prompt type

sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

This will load a basic text editor with the wifi configuration file.

You will just need to add a new “section” to the file for your network or modify an existing one.

e.g. Say that your SSID is “salmagundi” and it uses WPA2 security with a wifi password of “n0beef” you would add the following lines

network ={
ssid=”salmagundi”
psk=”n0beef”
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
proto=RSN
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
auth_alg=OPEN
}

To save this press <Ctrl> X then press Y and finally press <ENTER>.

At this point if you reboot your device it should then connect to your WiFi.

type

sudo reboot

Now remove the Ethernet Cable.

During boot up you should see the WiFi dongle’s activity light start blinking (rapidly) to indicate it has established a connection to your wifi.

Forgot to mention the awesome sub/pizza shop discovered on Saturday. Selby Sub Shoppe - found when we took a wrong turn looking for Thai food. Best mistake we could've made. Larry was especially happy that he didn't have to consume anything involving curry or green beans. He got chicken wings, while BHK, Chris and I gobbled down some white pizza... with red sauce on the side.

So good. Also good was the lemon coconut cake, lemon pie, chocolate mousse pie and the lemon cookies. We seem to have an inordinate amount of lemon fondness in our desserts.

And you take me the way I am.

I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair.

Dreamt last night of being at the Disney lagoon - BHK and I were swimming with giant sharks, eels - no fish was smaller than half my size, most of them were between 30-40 feet long. At one point I was kidnapped, and was told that if I escaped, my entire family would be killed. I grabbed the person and immobilized him by snapping his arms and legs off like dried twigs - when I went to finish him, the police showed up and told me that his brain shouldn't be damaged, as they needed it to ge tthe information on how he would hurt folks. I didn't care to see him live, but I relented - though only if I could pack his head with salt and ash. That was ok with the police, who decapitated him, and put his noggin in a clear tube for analysis... the head was somehow still alive, but as long as he couldn't speak, he couldn't hurt us... some sort of vampire, or lich, maybe?

Adam is home from Haiti - note form MVW

[...]
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your prayers! Adam returned home safely this past Saturday evening. He did have his Dad take him to the Hospital late Saturday evening because he was not feeling well. He had something called "Acute Pharyngitis" but he is feeling much better now!
I finally was able to catch up with him at our friends home, Sven and Mary Thulin's, last night. He promises to catch up with us soon and let us know some of the highlights of his trip.
A few things he did mention last night were:
Haiti has a 4% employment rate. 80% of the people are under the poverty line. 55% make less then a dollar/ day. He went to a town called Petit Goave for 3 days. They had no bathrooms to use, but only the Caribbean Sea for these 200 people. Adam's team helped build a shelter out of tree branches and metal.
He was impressed with the local church they had in the center of the little town. He said "their faith is very strong and their worship is very intense." One of the most important things I heard him say was that "As poor as they were, they were very content considering their situation".
I guess, sometimes we just need to hear these things to remind ourselves of how blessed we really are.[...]

3 wifi access points, all closed. named BOSS (45), glodemo(40), and scales(40). strong signals, considering the distance from the building to the road.

bus population -

driver - all business white man, 50 or older. jet black hair, likely dyed. an anachronism... professional in a business full of the rude and slovenly. probably a hard case with mooch-riders, but returned my 'afternoon' greeting.

1 Asian mid/late teens boy, with older Asian girl, 20ish speaking mandarin, as far as I can tell. happy.

all-female family unit; black grandma [50's], mamma [25ish], and two kids, 7, and maybe 2. all but the smallest wearing khaki blouses and blue jeans. youngest wearing a pink sun dress, stark contrast... highlight of the group - cutie. older sis eating corn chips from a brown paper bag.

white man, paint-spattered t-shirt and jeans. has some sort of paperwork in a grocery bag., along with a banana. he sits quietly, face vacant.

older white woman, retirement age. clean clothes, but filthy carry on. i wonder if she's homeless. well-equipped... wristwatch and glasses in good repair.

passing the hustler store, under construction - taking applications. maybe i should tell bro.

rowdy teens got on, at the gateway theater - were sternly warned by driver to be good. intimidation seems to have worked for the moment.

teens good until off the bus, then yelled "smoke weed!" once going out the door. i haven't heard it called weed for a long while... usually just pot or smoke.

Ah, Garganticus... both you and Fin Fang Foom are so awesome... not just for being giant scaly monsters, but for having the decency to wear short pants. (Though Garganticus wore trunks that actually matched his scaly skin, Foomy was brazen, and donned purple togs in sharp contrast to his green skin... maybe he was a fan of the Hulk and his purple slacks?) Where does a 400-foot monster go to get pants with a hole cut in the back to accommodate a tail?

We got a nice double whammy this weekend... two successful recoveries as a direct result of the system. A 9 year old boy who ran away, and a 92 year old with Alzheimer's who fell down and couldn't get back on his feet.

Summertime! Happy Solstice, dear journal.

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS - ATTENTION ALL GROWNUPS. Your "inner child" has long been waiting for a chance to usurp control of your body and force it to perform certain actions. The time is now at hand. Read and follow the instructions below. Do this now.

I *still* do a lot of these, especially the "kaboom" and "Waskilly Wabbit" thing now and then.

Bah, no funds for any adsense clickthroughs lately. My average is down to about $0.15 a day. I suspect that the banners will be removed at the end of this month.Site Meter

It also looks like my doodleboard hasn't really taken off as a drawing space, either. Well, it's an easy pseudo palm-doodle program that saves me the effort of uploading to the website, if nothing else.

A bike that gives free wireless Internet!

Magicbike is a mobile WiFi hotspot that gives free Internet connectivity wherever its ridden or parked. By turning a common bicycle into a wireless hotspot, Magicbike explores new delivery and use strategies for wireless networks and modern-day urbanites. Wireless bicycles disappear into the urban fabric and bring Internet to yet unserved spaces and communities. Mixing public art with techno-activism.

I'm glad it never gets cold enough in Florida to need Earbags.

Did they make banana pudding pops, or is that just a product of a fevered memory?

Out of the fog, into the smog. until later, dear journal.

Anyone that's going to dragon*con, if you see free heroclix-type stuff being given away, grab some for me, if you think of it, and care to.

Still waiting for some goodies form overseas to appear in my mailbox.. I wonder how long shipping takes from the middle east? I've also been expecting a check since Monday. I've just left a voice mail to find out if it's on the way.

ADHD girl today, 12 years old with the behavior of a 3 year old... she was lost, but was ultimately fond by the police on the roof of her own house.

Frankie interrupted me at the door while I was talking to Danny last night, begging to use the phone. He didn't seem to believe me when I told him I was using the phone. Tough noogies, Frankie. You want access to a phone anytime, drop a quarter and a dime over at the 7-11 pay phone. If it's not an emergency, you don’t have my sympathy.

I notice that StarBucks and Borders are offering wireless hotspots... sponsored by T-mobile. Sounds good at first glance, so I read a little more deeply. The fine print - "Sign up for an unlimited monthly subscription plan starting at $29.99 or pay as you go for only $6.00 per hour".

Around the corner, there's an internet cafe that provides the hourly service for the same price, and the coffee is better.

If you don't need coffee, the Broward county library has 50 t-1 ready computers free for the using.

What bugs me is that it plays at being free-free, but 24 hours and then we bill you. Bah on them. I think paying $4 for a coffee drink should be enough incentive for me to use my 'pooter there, or at least make it cost less than home service, for pity's sake.

Spoke briefly but pleasantly with my brother after playing a considerable amount of phone tag this afternoon... it seems that Francesco (his landlord) took my suggestions of cleaning the place up to heart after a potential tenant decided not to lease after seeing it sans a coat of paint and a good cleaning. Latest word is that the Terrazzo will be overlaid with tile or carpet. I hope tile, much simpler with a pair of hirsute boys living there...though Newt sheds more than I do. The bro apparently sold him on my moving in with true tales of my reliability with payment schedules and quiet living. (No bills overdue or crack use here!) Also, Francesco likes my brother... he's been a good tenant with him since he arrived back from Hawaii. I'm quite enthusiastic about living next door... He and I both have enough respect for one another to call before coming over, even if we only live two doors apart.

I'm also hoping that it comes through, because it's one of the better deals financially for the district... taking into account that cable will be free, I'll be paying about $15 less a month than I am now. I'll finally get the History channel unscrambled, and the Sci-fi channel again. (Is there anything worth watching on Sci-fi anymore? I used to only watch it for the Bionic Woman and the odd 60's shows...Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants... I hear that the original programming is a little feeble.)

Doable would be running a wireless network (or heck, even a cable, maybe if need be) between here and the outside courtyard... maybe into my brother's place, too, for multiplayer gaming, or just to let him surf from his place at DSL speed. I imagine that I'd be burning more CD's for him now, as he discovers the wonders of file-sharing.

I like being closer to the bro, being able to help him out and be more social.

Variables off the top of my head to take care of when I move into a new place:

  • Theft / Disaster insurance

  • Parking for the future bike - I may end up just keeping it in the apartment, by the door.

  • DSL or Cable High-speed access (looks like both are available)

  • Shopping Areas, particularly for groceries, books, and hippy-goods.

  • A separate green-grocer?

  • Places to walk, parks, beaches, etc.

  • Library

  • Laundry

  • Takeout & Sit Down - Thai, Chinese, American, Spanish and Italian

  • Nearness to Police / Ambulance / Fire Stations (Close enough to be quickly served, far enough away to be quietly served.)

  • Bus Routes / Taxi / Metro Rail

  • Possible New places of contract employment?

  • Local Human & Animal Hospitals

  • A local map is going to be a must... do like I did when I first moved to Pompano from Davie... put it on the fridge, or a corkboard.

  • Clothes Store

  • Shoe Store

  • Blood Donation Center

  • How's the night sky's light index?

Hurray! I can finally sleep at night, the new M&M color is Purple. The intro is a bit annoying, but the flash page they have to show voting stats by country is kinda nifty. mmmmmm...purpliscious

The new money will be called NexGen
The Treasury and Federal Reserve make it official: Starting in 2003, U.S. currency will have pretty colors. But they don't say which colors!
Is anyone else creeped out that they call the money "NexGen"? It sounds so ... Orwellian.
