Back to work today - Still plenty sick, but I need to get things taken care of, and I'm not dying or anything.

Snow falling as I hopped aboard the train - and it stuck to the ground, crunching underfoot as I walked the last bit from the bus to the office door. It stuck until about midday. It's about 14 degrees tonight, got up to 32 with the sun out.

Confirmation on Feb 2 off - looks like I'm going to see Punxy Phil after all! Also got the 19th off, so nice long weekend - 20th is off for all in dc - inauguration traffic nightmare averted!

Christmas Tree is outside, drying by the fire pit. I suspect we'll use it to heat the ring, or cover it in suet and feed the little birdies. We still have fairy lights on the gutter of the house, but they are unlit - probably will come down this weekend.

BHK and I have been listening to old Time radio on XM - She seemed to really enjoy Lucy Ball in "my favorite Husband" on the ride home.

Picked up $4 worth of scratch offs of our weekly gambling habit - won $6! a $2 profit quickly absorbed by her craving for slim jims.

Picked up Bugah in the early evening (~7:30ish)

Went to Bert's diner w/in-laws - Milkshake was soothing and delicious.

Got Bugah back to our place, and played video games until the wee hours. Preferred titles were Guitar Hero 3 and Transformers (brought with him), but we also got some other bits in here and there.

Lake Placid is a lovely way to chill out on a Sunday, while drifting in and out of a nap, while giving Newtie's little orange noggin pets. Followed that up with the Magnificent Seven.

It occurs to me that I didn't take as many photographs as I might've... I was too busy having fun to document the fun itself much of the time.

Off the top of my head -

I had a fantastic time. More detail will follow over the days ahead.

Nose-buttering is a lovely tradition, and I heartily suggest you try it, if you have the means.

Safeway maple cookies are really dang yummy.

I want to go back to MD, very, very soon. I missed seeing quite a few people, and I'd surely like to see the folks I got together with most recently again.

I've seen wagers on eternal happiness for $20 and a meal.

Notes in my sack lunch make me happy.

Bunny Suicides.

I saw an Italian burro, a bunch of sheepies and cowies and horsies and corn, headstones, churches and very little traffic, advertisement signage for folks running for office (what is a county executive?), a bunch of really swell people, a beautiful family, a cd that looks like a saw blade, a ton of strawberries, how a house with no tv positions chairs .

I had absolutely no urge to touch the internet this weekend. It just didn't enter my head. (the closest I came to computer desire is the statement "I don't know, we should google it later" came up a few times.) The only time it came up at all was while I was sitting in the airport with nothing to do except window-shop, read my e-book (The Time Traders, by Andre Norton - a book seemingly endless.. somehow I'm going through it at an impossibly slow pace)

I had amazing coach-class airline seat-luck. One free upgrade to 1st class. the other three times had either nobody in the seat next to me (saving them from my wall-like vastness), or an 11-year old kid who was small enough not to mind and able to talk about James Bond villains. (My movie knowledge and his interest in Rogue Agent)

here's why I picked up liberty stories

Got corrected lyrics for Jojo the Cannibal kid - mp3

thanks firpo, for the tune, and jpse for the clarification!

Listen to me you explorers, Buck and Admiral Byrd,
Here's a story, one you never heard
there's a fellow in the jungle
one you never knew
you won't get him, but he might get you

Who's the talk at every table from Chicago to Madrid?
Who's the African Clark Gable?
Jojo, the Cannibal kid!

All the tribes eat roots and berries.
He's the one that never did.
He prefers his missionaries.
Jojo, the cannibal kid

He could always pass on his manner and his savoir faire
Mix with every class - eat the finest people everywhere!

Circuses send offers daily
{Bertram Mills made him a bid}
but he's holding out for Barnum Bailey,
Jojo the cannibal kid

Mmmmyeow...
Don't you know? He eats them alive...
{gets the bibbity bobbidy myeow}
eating out, from nine to five.

boom jigga boom jigga boom jigga boom boom
That is the Jojo way
boom jigga boom jigga boom jigga boom boom
that means he's on the {trail}

{Everybody run and get in the closet, pull all the windows down
everybody find a safe place to pause it } Or could be "...find a safety deposit."
Jojo is now in town

Who's the talk at every table from Chicago to Madrid?
Who's the African Clark Gable?
Jojo, the Cannibal kid!

All the tribes eat roots and berries.
He's the one that never did.
He prefers his missionaries.
Jojo, the cannibal kid

He could always pass on his manner and his savoir faire,
Mix with every class - eat the finest people everywhere!

Circuses send offers daily.
{Bertram Mills* made him a bid},
but he's holding out for Barnum Bailey.
Jojo the cannibal kid!

I'm opting out of Dragon*Con this year, because it looks like zero of the six people who were going to go (that I wanted to see and visit with) are giving it a pass this year for one reason or another. I can validate the cost of the trip as a get-together, but not just for gaming and shopping.

I'm still shooting for a trip to Sterling, VA sometime this summer, though.

Two entries ago I poured out a long, heartfelt post about a lot of things... so many things in fact, that I retroactively privatized it. Stuff about my bro, friendships, oddball behaviors of mine, attitude changes and so on. Some large changes are coming up in my life, a few I can see, many I don't even know by name yet, but I'm sure are out there. I'm rethinking some aspects of who I am, and what I'm about.

Some Elements I wish to retain are -

Basic Kindness, and a desire to help others
Sharp skills in my field and interests
Being honest with people when possible, Diplomacy as needed otherwise
Knowing boundaries where I can be open, and where I must close.
Give as good as I get, or better
An acceptable level of Justice
Sensitivity/awareness/intelligence
analysis of information on multiple levels at the same time. (See the forest and the trees. And the leaves, the systems within and innate beauty of all of the above
quality time with Newton and Friends

Some Elements I wish to acquire -

A greater sense of general knowledge over specialization (especially by filling in any fragmented gaps)
Interest in getting goals done in a timely manner, with minimal stress - (Focus without anxiety.)
Less Slovenly appearance
Better tolerance of people who refuse to communicate properly, or at least accept it when folks will not hear what I have to say (even when I'm asked for "input")
Love without condition.
An acceptable level of Mercy (I seem to have too much or too little, depending on the situation.)

Aspects to remove or modify -

Regain balance in all 4 aspects of life - Mental, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual.
Develop a more structured regimen to develop those areas that are currently weak (Physical seems highest on the list, though the others, too)
Rework current financial plans, allow for greater depth of field.
Eliminate Burnout - Find good, acceptable strengths in what's being done, and do the best to diminish or remove negatives.
More tolerance of the foolish and ignorant (but continue to remove them from positions where they can harm themselves or others)
Hone view of other folks' signals, and act on them, but remain my own person
Writing - minimum 1 hour a day of drills, practice, etc. Same goes for a body workout with weights or something more than just walking.
Better Dietary Controls - slipping up too much

Bottom Line: focus on growth, health and being a good person.

We'll see how I do at this in the times to come.

At tri-rail - realized that I'd shave over 2 1/2 hours travel if i take the train from Miami to Deerfield. Greyhound driver from key west to Miami was excellent, professional, helpful, polite and very competent driver. Robert Rios will be getting a letter of praise sent to his office.

The vertigo tunnel at Ripley's is worth the price of admission.

I missed seeing tiny deer. - (see also - wikipedia) I look forward to spotting a few next time.

I couldn't get Ripley's-specific postcards for Pye, but I think he and his mommy'll like the ones I sent.

Nice time with the Danster last night. He's probably at about 50% go for Dragon*con. I'll be going unless some unexpected financial issue comes up to stop me. He had curried duck, and I had a boatload of veggie sushi. He paid for dinner, and I bought us 3 packs of pirates each... and I got a sea monster! Calyspos (traded from Danny for a huge French Clipper ship... fair trade, both are rare, he's got a nice French fleet, and my Spanish fleet would love to have a giant squid on its team)

Danny also gifted me with Darwinia as a pleasant surprise, as well. I imagine that I'll spend nice bit of time fiddling with that, too.

Got some writing accomplished last night. Basic outline, some bits of dialogue. It's not coming together in "freeflow" style I usually go for, but building on a planned skeleton seems to be working for me so far. 6 characters is a bit stereotypical so far... protagonist, romantic interest, street contact, police interface, villain and victim. I've got the method, but some aspects of the implementation aren't quite on the beam. It wa skind of hard ot get rolling, but about 15 minutes in, the flow improved.

(Writing to Linda Ronstadt's unreleased Keeping Out Of Mischief album certainly promotes noir. Got to love a good torch song from a voice like hers. Thank you, internet for obscure, but easy to download, lost vinyl!)

While researching world hunger, I stumbled over this guy. Norman E. Borlaug

"Dr. Norman Borlaug is the first person in history to save a billion human lives. But he must also get credit for saving the wild creatures and diverse plant species on 12 million square miles of global forest that would long since have been plowed down without the high-yield farming he pioneered. The two accomplishments combined make him dramatically unique. I am proud to work with the Center for Global Food Issues, of which he is Chairman Emeritus."

* Senator Rudy Boschwitz, R-MN, former member of the US Senate Agriculture Committee
A billion lives saved.

A *BILLION*.

A *BILLION* lives spared from starvation.

I can't even properly conceive of that. 1/6th of the planet's population?

Why had I never heard of him? That'll teach me not to watch the West Wing or Penn & Teller's TV show.

I knew it: (the word pants and trousers were disturbing me a great deal on Saturday, at the salvation army.)

In the early 19th century the words "trousers" and "pants" were considered obscene in England. Woman referred to trousers as "inexpressibles" or "a pair of dittoes." Later in the century the taboo was carried to such lengths that piano legs were covered up because they reminded people of their human legs. In 1836 Charles Dickens wrote the following lines in Oliver Twist:

" ' I tossed off the clothes, got safely in bed, drew on a pair of ________' "

" ' Ladies present, Mr. Giles,' murmured the tinker.

" ' _________ of shoes, Sir,' said Mr. Giles, laying great emphasis on the word."

Well she sneaks around the world from Kiev to Carolina,

She'll take you for a ride on a slow boat to China,

Steal their Seoul in South Korea, make Antarctica cry Uncle,
From the Red Sea to Greenland they'll be singing the blues,
Well they never Arkansas her steal the Mekong from the jungle,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
She go from Nashville to Norway, Bonaire to Zimbabwe,
Chicago to Czechoslovakia and back!
Well she'll ransack Pakistan and run a scam in Scandinavia,
Then she'll stick 'em up Down Under and go pick-pocket Perth,
She put the Miss in misdemeanor when she stole the beans from Lima,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Oh tell me where in the world is... Oh tell me where can she be?
Ooh, Botswana to Thailand, Milan via Amsterdam,
Mali to Bali, Ohio, Oahu...!
Well she glides around the globe and she'll flimflam every nation,
She's a double-dealing diva with a taste for thievery,
Her itinerary's loaded up with moving violations,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
