GeotargetDanny was a *huge* help when it came to the move. I couldn't have done it without him. He is truly master of all things. (according to his fortune cookie, anyhow.)

Breakfast of blueberry muffins and cold water this morning. Nice christening of the house.

No DSL yet at the new place, and my repair shop told me what I already knew... dead IDE and drives on Bigger brain. Thank goodness for warranty, as I need a new motherboard and pair of Hard drives. Downside is that the parts will take about a week, and all old data on there is toast. A lot of movies that hadn't been yet burned to DVD were lost, but easily recovered. I'm thankful that most of my sentimental pictures and movies are saved online as well as locally. I've got a lot of stuff to reinstall, Newtcam and etc once it gets back home.

Lucky for me Lappie works fine, even on dialup! I just called Bellsouth, and it looks like I'm without DSL until 12/16 "thanks to the hurricane". I call shenanigans on that, but it's not a big deal until I get bigger brain up and running anyhow.

Newt is enjoying all of the new surfaces, and already know how to use the bathroom. Nice comfy evening on the new bed.

No pictures until I find a wireless point to toss images from the palm, but I'm taking before and after shots as the place comes together.

GeotargetFound out the my last living Grandmother (Momster's Momster) is in hospice now. She's deteriorated quite rapidly, and they don't know if it'll be two months or two weeks. She's not in any pain, and seems to be at peace. Her lucidity is variable.. she was sounding good last week, and recognized her son and granddaughter... she gets her hair and nails done, and appears to enjoy that.

Not moving *all the way* in today, just getting the bulk of stuff over. Mr. N and I will remain at the old place for another week while the bathroom gets finished...I'd rather kick back ion a realm with running water and a potty. So, I'm going to have to put Newt in bathroom lockup while the truck gets loaded...he's not going to be too keen on that, but the boy'll cope. I like the idea of sliding into the new place gently.

Tropical Storm Gamma... it's following Wilma's track. hopefully it'll ease up before it gets worse. Nice Thanksgiving gift! The upside... not nearly as much loose stuff to blow around this time!

Fortunately Sandrino says "Its only a tropical storm and it will be moving very fast. I wouldn't worry too much. It's not going to ge in the Gulf of Mexico and even if, the ocean is not as hot as it was four weeks ago. Relax."

GeotargetI'd like a comfy linen/cotton blend suit, and a snappy gray fedora. Not sure where that urge for a summer suit in November came from.

I can't watch TV shows that place in hospitals, at least not around the anniversary of my father's death or his birthday. I had an extended crying jag last night when I remembered that his birthday is coming up in about 2 weeks. First time I've really cried for quite a while. Ultimately cleansing, but think I hurt my side a little bit as a result. Newt was a great comfort to me.

I miss my dad. I miss the way my brother was when he was 12. I think that I get along with my mother better these days than I ever had as a kid.

The office has decided not to pay salaried folks for time away from work due to Hurricane Wilma... I'm going to point them to Hurricane Wilma Disaster Unemployment Assistance. To determine eligibility for Wilma DUA (or standard unemployment benefits), start by contacting the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (Florida unemployment office) or filing an unemployment claim through same by 11/28/2005. For information about other types of Hurricane Wilma disaster assistance, browse the FEMA and FDEM sites.

I'm safe... I worked every day save for 2, and those two days I gave training and tech walk-through to our rep in Texas. I think that everyone else save for ECN and myself will end up getting docked a little more than week's pay. (I wonder if the Big Kahuna will cut herself, too?)

GeotargetGood News / Bad News, dear journal.

Good News: I have full power at my apartment. Air Conditioning and Lights, TV, etc.

Bad News: Big Brain's Hard Drive is crapping out... I can't seem to keep him awake for more than a moment or two before he cycles through and reboots... I'm going to estimate he needs about $400 worth of repairs... mirror the giant drives over to new drives, basically. He had started to die earlier.. I thought it was a power issue, but I see now that it's even worse.

Good News: I dropped it off and it's still covered under the extended warranty.. (this big brain was bought 12/21/03, and he's got 2 years parts and labor covered - a little over a month left to freshen up - I'm also having them do a full system peek, just in case the video card is starting to crap out)

I expect to have it back at HQ within 7 working days. Meanwhile, lappie is a handy backup, just word processing and the like... no major gaming for a week or so.

I've begun sorting the apartment out... packing things into boxes and skimming down to the very basics. All of my books should be ready for transport by the end of the weekend.

Phoenix is going to get some training today after lunch... I think that she has some solid tech potential.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

GeotargetSaw Phoenix as I was leaving work today... she's currently jobless - apparently some club drama caused her to bail. We had a hug and got caught up with things. She might be preggers, too. I still don't know what happened with Gil and co. She has a lot more freckles than I realized... I gave her a business card and offered to see if we could find her a gig as a tech (which the company needs).

Amazing how a $100,000 loan can turn into $250,000 when paid back over 30 years. The power of interest.

Lots of 4-way stops going on until late December, it seems.

State utility regulators Wednesday approved an fuel-cost increase for Florida Power & Light Co. that will hike an average customer bill by 19 percent starting Jan. 1. The increase would drive an average 1,000 kilowatt hour monthly bill up by $16.99 to $108.61, up from $91.62.

I'm on day 17 of having no A/C, no Fridge, no Big-brain computer and no stove or microwave oven. Not really a tragedy. I do fine since I have hot showers, some lights and some internet resources. Students have to make up 6 of the 11 missed school days. (shortened Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, mostly.)

And the universe is turning red
I dont know what it was she said
Something like 'ed is dead'

Under my shoes everything will crawl
The places i tread will crumble and fall
You never take heed to anything at all
Your head's too big but your minds to small
Sounds running through my head

Awesome Halloween Icon -

"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
-Anonymous

I used to believe that. Sadly, I've uncovered some seriously malicious stupidity in recent days. Why have one, instead of both?

Also, whatever happened to "Lead by example"? In most gigs the last decade or so, it's been a case of "Do as I say, not as I do."

Ah well, no big whoop. I'm not going to harp on the limitations of others. Meanwhile, I have a new place to get ready for a move-in and folks to be friendly with.

This weekend, I put the starting moves on boxing up all non-essential goods... I think that I can get everything over to the new place in one trip of a U-haul. The tile is down already, and it's getting an acid wash shortly... New sinks, a new commode and running a little cable for phones will happen over the course of this and next week.

Basic condo info - One bedroom, third floor, pool access, washing machine two doors from my place, ($.75 a load) a clubhouse with a pool table, library, ping-pong table and meeting area (would've been fantastic for gaming back in the day.) Ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room, both high enough for me to walk under comfortably. Maintenance covers the cost of basic cable... I'm not a big fan of Comcast's south florida service, but free is free. A lot of nice grounds to walk, with a fairly large iguana population by the lake. Walking distance to Federal Highway, which is a major mass-transit backbone. Central Air. Built in 1969. New Fridge and dishwasher. BBQ grills outside here and there. Garbage disposal. Covered parking. Super tiny elevator, or groovy large steps. Hurricane Shutters.

About here. ( about 16 miles north of where I live now).

Looks like I'll be getting out of Ft. Laud right before Hav gets back from Gitmo.

An Hour with Hourman and Teen Titans vs. The Doom Patrol... by Mike Allred! Happy geek vibes.

Henry Pym and Ralph Dibney don't count as junkies, though they are also pill poppers. Also.. um, Dan Garret (Blue Beetle I) and his vitamin 2-X, Super Goof...

Being a pedestrian in a region with no street lights / traffic lights is a scary thing. I avoid those regions wherever possible.

Newt and I had a nice conversation this morning. I have no idea what it was all about, except that he's a cutie when he's sleeping with his paw over his eyes, belly up... looks like a swooner on a fainting couch.

Well, it looks like I'm going in to the Deerfield condo interview after work today, or tomorrow afternoon, if something happens to foul tonight.

Unless I totally botch things, I should be owning that bad boy (along with the bank) by Dec. There was no damage after the 'cane, save for a minor tear in the porch screen, and a spray of flying flora frappes in there.

Not a bad Halloween treat! (Hope it's not a trick)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Enjoy lots of candy, ghosts and goblins!

95% of Florida Power & Light's customer's should have power by November 8. (about 65% are currently without)

Set up a generator at work... phone system is still dead, so I'm back to BSO this morning, which is great for me. I really dig the gang over there.

The office will now have the internal network, a shared printer, and file server... the internet is spotty, but may be functional enough for periodic email use. Certainly good enough for them to look through contact lists and such. No Lights (save for the sun) and no A/C, but it's been rather cool so far. Toilets flush, but no drinking water or refrigeration.

The Montel Williams show will be by to do a little pre-interview taping, so that should be highly entertaining... I'm rather glad I'm missing that. Folks are bringing 2 sets of clothes, one for skunk-work, the other for possibly appearing on camera. Big Kahuna is flying to New York sometime this or next week for taping there... broadcast is set for the top of December.

Flashback to last year -

I wonder why Man-Bat didn't get all kinds of cool man-based gizmos... A Man-mobile, man-cave, the "Man Signal" or Manarangs?

Man-Bat

Thank goodness that all major transforming monsters keep their pants on, for dignity's sake. It wouldn't do to have the Hulk, Mr. Hyde, Man-Bat or Wolfman running around with their winkies flapping in the wind.

clown babies and multicolored skeletons.
Have a great and safe holiday!

safety tips and tricks for Halloween:

  1. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead.

  2. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke.

  3. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.

  4. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, you should be very concerned. This also applies to kids who speak with somebody else's voice.

  5. When you have the benefit of numbers, NEVER pair off and go alone.

  6. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

  7. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would apply to any other house of the dead as well.

  8. If you're searching for something which caused a loud noise and find out that it's just the cat, GET THE HECK OUT!

  9. If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for short circuits; just get out.

  10. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead.

  11. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around.

  12. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you're doing.

  13. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at east twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

  14. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, run for your life!

  15. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog, anywhere in Texas where chainsaws are sold, the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

  16. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange you ran out of gas because you thought you had most of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and most likely be eaten.

  17. Beware of strangers bearing tools. For example: chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, band saws, or any devices made from deceased companions.

  18. If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the time to move in with the in-laws. This also applies to houses that had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed satanic practices.

  19. Dress appropriately. When investigating a noise downstairs in an old house, women should not wear a flimsy negligee. And carry a flashlight, not a candle.

  20. Do not mention the names of demons around open flames, as these can flare suddenly. Be especially careful of fireplaces in this regard.

  21. Do not go looking for witches in the Maryland countryside.

Bonfires burning bright
Pumpkin faces in the night
I remember Halloween

Dead cats hanging from poles
Little dead are out in droves
I remember Halloween

Brown leafed vertigo
Where skeletal life is known
I remember Halloween

This day anything goes
Burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember Halloween

Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween

Candy apples and razor blades
Little dead are soon in graves
I remember Halloween

This day anything goes
Burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember

Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween
Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween

It was Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf, third season, when he caught Dave Lister burning books to stay warm:

"They say that every society is only three meals away from revolution. Deprive a culture of food for three meals, and you'll have an anarchy.
Sad that I recall the line from an old sci-fi/comedy show, but it seems to be right.

We had sundown curfews and all sorts of looting and crime... and the food hadn't even stopped. I can't even imagine what it would be like here if there was no power, water, or food distribution system right after the storm.

Odd how civilization goes right out the window when it comes down to survival. Yesterday, Dan & I talked (over bottled water and tasty, but overpriced Whole Foods fare - wheat berry salad was quite yummy, must get it again... they didn't have the curried cous cous that I was wanting to try.) about how gangs are self-regulating, and what the plans of action would be should the power go out, and stay out... and food/fuel deliveries were stopped. Grocery stores seemed like the best place to take over with an armed band of men, followed by pawnshops (or other well armored weapon resources) and drugstores/lesser food areas.

We also talked about the "Frito Bandito", as he had the pencil-topper with a top hat, and I had one with a sombrero.

Sung to Cielito Lindo

I, yi, yi yi...
I am the Frito Bandito
I Love Fritos Corn chips
I Love them I do
I Love Fritos Corn chips
I Steal Them from you !

I, yi, yi yi...
I am the Frito Bandito
Give me some Fritos and I'll be your friend
The Frito Bandito you must not offend!

frito bandito frito bandito

That was good for a lot of laughs, and segues into discussions about school lunches...he usually got the hot lunch, and I was a box-carrier, generally... until high school. I actually liked the cafeteria food, especially the tostadas with a side of french fries and chocolate milk.

Today, I'm supposed to muddle out the generator for work, but my hopes are that the building will have power by Monday anyhow.

Broward County Mass Transit (BCT) will resume service on Saturday, October 29, operating on a Sunday schedule until further notice.

Due to the volume of road debris remaining on many BCT routes, and the number of downed or inoperable traffic signals, riders may experience some unavoidable delays in the schedule.

Full service will resume as soon as possible.

I still have partial power to my apartment... plugging into the kitchen will allow lappie to get on the internet.Still no A/C, but Wilt is coming by after I get back from the BSO tomorrow to evaluate the problem. Oddly, my power comes on in the rest of my apartment if I switch on the A/C. (Note, the A/C doesn't run... and big brain's monitors seem to suck too much juice to power up.) If I switch off the non-running A/C, off goes the power everywhere but the kitchen.

Until full power and decent rewind time comes, I'm going to hold off on posting the 5,4,3,2,1 years ago thing and tagging back-entries.

The gang at the BSO is pretty cool, really welcoming, helpful above and beyond the call of duty. Plus, the tech-crew isn't as "Cop-like", more like a typical computer-squad.. personalities that I can get along with nicely.

Moment of Lyric: (youtube movie)

Don't you know boys life can be rough
but I say whoa boys I play tough
holes in my pockets holes in my shoes
I ain't cryin' no revenue blues
not headed no particular place
just feels good to feel the wind on my face

I eat my dinner from an old tin can
drink out the liver of most any man
ain't no hope or soul to be saved
bury my body in an old confederate grave

there's no one that I can trust
I lay my devotion down in the dust
I'm not blind and I don't bluff
guns and chains honey, that's not enough
when I walk there's never a sound
but you're gonna know when I come around.

I eat my dinner from an old tin can
drink out the liver of most any man
ain't no hope or soul to be saved
bury my body in an old confederate grave

Its my goal just to survive
I left my soul way down at the end of the light
I came to a door and I stepped through
you can't see me now I'm waving at you
and when you smile I see the yankee boy's face
who took my life at this very same place.

I eat my dinner from an old tin can
drink out the liver of most any man
ain't no hope or soul to be saved
bury my body in an old confederate grave

I eat my dinner from an old tin can
drink out the liver of most any man
hide my possessions in an cold dark cave
I sit deep in an old confederate grave

I've got water, not for drinking, but good to shower in...and since we use natural gas, it's hot!

power is a little weird, kitchen light comes on and the a/c tries to run at 1/2 power, but the rest is still deader than a can of spam. some neighbors are already at full power, and it looks like the office will reopen, power or not by Monday morning.

There is a mandatory 7pm-7am curfew, and violators can go to jail if they don't watch it. That doesn't seem to stop the cars out and about at 6am.
