Recapping -

Got my 401k comp check from my last gig - That worked out well. I told a little fib to BHk, and said that I expected about $500, and we got about eight times that amount. (I was planning for about six times.)

Went to Annapolis and promptly deposited that little windfall in the bank - then stopped off at the Amish Farmer's Market for breakfast. BHK and I split two - ate half and then swapped Chocolate Chip Pancakes, home fries, cheddar cheese omelet, wheat toast - I let BHK eat up all of the bacon, of course.

Opted out of going to a movie - nothing we want to see just this moment.. maybe next week when it's less crowded.  We did get a few other goodies at the farmer's market - cheese, strawberries, trinket's for our 4'th of July cake (gummy stars and confetti sprinkles), a blueberry fritter for me for tomorrow's breakfast (or tonight's midnight snack)

BHK remembered that I was due for shots (skipped when em was here) and we went there for a bit. Adam called, and mentioned that he was coming down for the 3rd's fireworks, an was bringing Anna - so, it was a quick trip to the grocery to be sure he had a full belly.

I was feeling pretty out of it at that point, so I rested in the car. Going to nap now that we're home. sweet dreams, dear journal.

Went over to Chris and Mandy's for a cookout and general socializing - nice day, and the people were conversational and friendly. I missed out on the good eats because it seems that the antibiotics I'm taking don't work well with cereal-milk - had a sourbelly all day.

Chris and Mandy (and Sarah and James/John?) seem like really fun folks to hang with - Philomena next door looks like a wonderfull addition to the neighborhood too. maybe we can all get together for a game night sometime - or maybe a boy's night and a gal's night split sometime, too?

tired as all get out - still recovering from our little visitor - but it's a good tired. I'm looking forward to Bugah's visit in two weeks! It should be interesting to see the shift form a 6 year old girl to 11 year old boy!

BHK is still recovering too - sh'es more resilient than I am!

may fill in detail later, but too tired now... 3 hour road trip there, and 3 hours back... poor bhk is even more sleepy than me!

Back to work, MLK day 0121 Or R.E.LEE day for folks too racist to even take a day off to say thanks to a black guy. (Well, Virginia's state Motto is what John Wilkes Booth shouted in the theater.)

BHK and Bug lifted me into work this morning... I said my goodbyes, as he was back in VA by the time I made it home. We had a nice time - lots of stuff to do, and good goofing off periods.

MRI came back, and I have a herniated disk - S1 level, pressing to the left {pic via gray's anatomy} - (S1 nerve impingement from a herniated disc may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (e.g. patients cannot do toe rises). Numbness and pain can radiate down to the sole or outside of the foot.

I'd like this to mean that I can get repairs done to a previously thought dead area. I suspect that I may have to have surgery down the line - Still early to tell.

To counter flying_blind's wtf flickr moment - I don't know how old the news is, but I just learned that the library of congress has a flickr account. Cool, neat stuff like this made me add 'em.

I've had music by TMBG in my head all week... I Palendrome I and Birdhouse especially. Sakes, but Jay Leno has gotten gray.

KFC dinner and an omelet at the in-laws tonight... BHK made it there about 10 minutes after I arrived. Nice time, gabbing with family about this and that - got to talk to Em on the phone a bit, too! Caught Danny on Skype, too... he was watching the debate feed on CNN. Me, I'm not caring much for any of the current batch of politicos, but it looks like he's going to vote for Hillary, based on her platform.

Rise and Shine! Early Bird gets the worm! Road trip to Virginia today with BHK! (in-laws and Louise will caravan with us, in another car)

faceplode
One of the ideas that BHK and I bandied about on the road trip after making up random drink names... like "The devil's shoelaces", "Cool Breeze" and "Bag o' Tremors", we started thinking about magical drinks that replicate experiences - "skydiving", "slap in the face", "Karate victory" were some of the more tame ones.

Stopped at Sheetz to get a nibble mid-trip...
Observations:
  • garlic fries good but swimming in oil at the bottom
  • mac and cheese bleh.
  • Cinnamon pretzel needs no frosting.
  • Coffee drink was sort of weak.
  • How many teenagers lurk there as a social thing?
  • Cups leap out an attack patrons.

I think we'll stick to pre-packaged foods next time.

While at Bugah and Em's b-day, met Nana (great Gramma), The Gramma and Roy. We all went to an Italian place for supper - Joe's. From the school of "HUGE portions of OK food" The spaghetti looked great, as did the lasagna. I tried a bite of the eggplant parm, which was a little bitter - my veggie sub did fine.

Speaking of the birthday, I was surprised to see that BHK and I were the only ones to get the 10 and 5 year old any toys! Next closest thing to a toy was a gumball machine bank. Oh, wait - I forgot. Louise got Em a toy cell phone and necklace. Bugah seems to dig the skateboard, but it looks like the learning curve may be a bit more steep than we had initially thought. I'm confident that he'll be all over it soon.

After playing tanks and a few other mini-games, Bugah's given me the Wii bug again. We may try and pick one up this weekend. I also played Destroy all Humans 2 on the xbox with Bugah, which seems to be a nice sequel to the one we have for our Xbox at home.

Em was a sweetie - leading me around by the hand - we played some concentration (using dominoes to match the number of pips) before leaving for dinner.

We made it back to our place about 11:30 - worn out from the day's ruining around and socializing. My hip was a little creaky after the drive, but no ill effects aside from that.

Sunday morning started with more reading, and a repeat of BHK napping a little bit while I played Pyramids and Dominoes with EM. Once we were all cleaned up and ready, we toddled off to Chris and Larry's for a tasty breakfast of Belgian waffles w/ ice cream and fresh made strawberry syrup - Em ate 6 or 7 pieces of bacon, and a whole waffle! That little critter can *eat*!

Post breakfast gluttony, (see photos), we headed down to the Bay to take a moment to search for fossils - - Emily got a lovely little bag of shark's teeth and shells to take back with her.

At about 1, it was time to head out for our rendezvous with Misti at the Arby's - a reasonable halfway point between our homes (approximately an hour drive for each). during the drive, we saw quite a bit of Amish country, down to several Horse-drawn carriages - apparently you can pass them on a double-lined highway, unlike normal cars. A pretty broad assortment of them were out and about, covered and uncovered, families and older couples.
DSCN5941 DSCN5938

After lunch and switching Em's car seat to Misti's truck, we encountered two stray cats lurking around the parking lot.

DSCN5942 DSCN5948

After a little deliberation, we decided to take them someplace safer, either a no-kill shelter, home with us, or at least to a region without as much high-speed car traffic nearby. They're Brother and sister, I think, and about four months old.
DSCN5947 DSCN5944

We did have to name 'em, rather than just boy or girl -

Ripley - White and tan little guy (Named for a place that has a bit of meaning for us - see also ) The little lover... all about snuggles and purrs.

Pomonkey - Longhair Tabby female, looks like a "what if Pye and Newt had a daughter" Hair length and ear-wispies of pye, with Newt's markings. (Name based on a city's name I learned a while back and haven't stopped enjoying yet) Super curious, purrs easily, too.

After taking them to the vet to be tested for Feline Leukemia (and anything else that might hurt Pye and/or Newt), they came home with us to stay in the guest bathroom. We located a good foster home for them both, and I don't think either one will have any trouble being adopted.

While we'd love to keep them, we just don't have the ability to do so in a good way. I really wish that we could... makes me want to own a barn a mile away from anywhere, just so we can have a homestead with a bunch running around.

Since we waited at the vets for about 5 hours (emergency room for animals - triage... the kitties were pretty dang healthy except for ear mites, so other, more urgent cases had priority.)

We watched the Meteor shower for about 3 minutes until we both got super sleepy, and had to head to bed. Caught a few shooting stars, though!

Yesterday, I forgot to mention that I received Martian coasters, filler colors of icehouse stashes, and other ordered loot. I'm looking forward to playing them with BHK at our earliest convenience.

Awoke early - about 6:45 on a Saturday. EM was up at about 6:30, I think.

Read in bed:

  • Olivia - classic. Olivia would be Eloise, if Eloise were a pig. She is good at singing 40 very loud songs and is very good at wearing people out. And scaring the living daylights out of her little brother, Ian, particularly when he copies her every move. She is also quite skilled at reproducing Jackson Pollock's "Autumn Rhythm #30" on the walls at home. When her mother tucks her in at night and says, "You know, you really wear me out. But I love you anyway," Olivia precociously pronounces, "I love you anyway too."
  • Ain't gonna Paint No more - pretty spiffy, good rhythm, color and song.
  • 93 in my family Now *that*'s a fun kids book. Reads well, stuff to look at on every page, terribly cute, and gives a message that's neat, too. Plus, a carsick hamster named Ed. We need more like this one.
  • Where Have The Unicorns Gone? - Lovely Art, poorly written - it just doesn't flow.

BHK was tuckered out, and fell back asleep about midway through Olivia, so Em and I got up after reading and made necklaces with wooden beads and string from Em's kit - very pretty stuff.

Played some simple stacking and lining up games with dominoes and red & blue icehouse pyramids with Em while BHK slept - may have developed the seed of a new game! Stacking Pyramids on top of a domino board to collect points. Needs a little work, but if I can teach the basics to a 4-year-old and it's challenging to me, there could be a fun concept waiting to burst out.

Once BHK woke up, we all got cleaned up and headed out to take care of TM's kitties (see picture in yesterday's post ).

After many kitty snuggles, we all went to the marine museum to see the otters and the stingrays - it was also a Cradle of the Invasion day - folks dressed in garb of 1812, WWII, and modern style, showing how Marines in wartime lived and worked in the area. pretty neat. Apparently, in the 30s-40s, Tropical chocolate was mixed with paraffin wax so it wouldn't melt... the K rations had basically a chocolate candle to eat along with government supplied cigarettes. Lots of items about amphibious warfare that didn't interest Em too much, but I'd like to go back next time and spend a little while talking to the folks and getting some perspectives on things. My Grandfather on my mom's side was a Marine during WWII, and he never really talked too much about it, short of taking me to the VFW and hanging out with other vets. (That's where I got my first Shirley Temple.)

[edit - I forgot that we went to the amish market, and saw ducks and geese and chickens and goats and puppies and horses, and amish folks, and bought gingerbread and blueberry jam, and lemon meringue pie for Larry, and shoo-fly pie for us, and peppers to stuff with yum! - Sakes, we were busy]

Getting close to Lunch, so we headed off to Burt's [Edit - dang, why do I always call it Fred's?] for veggie burgers (em got popcorn shrimp) - good stuff, but I suspect the kids meal had more food than our veggie burger platter! We got puzzle place mats and crayons so we could color while we waited for our food.

Went to Aardvarks to pick up Early American Chrononauts (and ice cream - Play-doh is still my favorite... vanilla ice cream dyed bright yellow with red and blue chunks of sugar cookie dough mixed in. ) I suspect that I like Early American more than standard Chrononauts.

Chris and Larry's for Dinner - Hot Dogs on the Grill, beans, slaw, and all sorts of yum. BHK had to duck out and tend to Tina's Kitties again while Chris, Larry, Em and I hung out and chitty-chatted. Emily was very well behaved, and barely persnickety or bossy at all. She played very nicely with Tigger for hours.

Quote of the night was by Em - "I would never hurt beautiful Uncle Scott!"

Full and happy we all came home and crashed out.

THE RULES:

1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random.
Whatever you like.

2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.

3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.

4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.

5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

Mine were -

1) Where did you meet your girl? Livejournal, actually - Sixish years ago, at least, when I was dating someone else. I think that I traded up nicely.

2) Is Newt still a vicious man-eater? He can be pretty aggressive to some folks, and a love to others. He hasn't seen any Newfs lately, but he still attacks most smokers with great vigor.

3) Recommend 3 fairly cheap 2 player, easy to learn, fun games that are outside the normal Milton Bradley/Hasbro line. Well, you already know about Fluxx and Carcassone, so I'll toss out Treehouse at about $10, you can't go too far wrong (see links above) (which is a gateway drug to other fun games, too) and Chrononauts, also linked above, a little bit more pricey at $20, (with both games the more the merrier, but two can play handily.)

4) Without sounding offensive and I hope you don't take this in the wrong way at all.. Has anyone ever mentioned that there is more than a slight resemblance between my Ex Wife and your Current Wife? Short of this question, nobody has... From what I can recall of her face, I don't really see the resemblance! Eyes, nose, facial shape, hair and skin all seem pretty different to me!

5) Suggest something for a future DoWhatIDo

Work is getting solid now - doing a lot of testing and validation of some programs going live. It's fun - I'm getting a chance to flex some SQL muscle on queries that can range from simple to fairly complex.

After work, Chuck E Cheese with Em and BHK - We were there for a bit... had some pizza (not too bad, really!) played some skee-ball and other ticket-type redemption games. Scored 420 tickets, and made the obligatory reference to the prize-guy behind the counter... he laughed and happily doled out her loot... A Hello Kitty coin purse, some stickers, a little pink bracelet and a cinderella magnet. Not a bad haul for doing something that was fun anyway. BHK is pretty dang good at the ol' Skee-Ball, while I'm a bit better at shooting hoops.

Hm, "Redemption Games" sounds like some sort of Tom Clancy book about a Chaplain in the Green Berets. File that for later tongue-in-cheekiness.

On our way home, we checked in with Tina's Kitties - Keiki was happy to be a little love-muffin all over Em. Chai was affectionate, too, but not all up in her business (which is how Em likes her kitties.)

Emily arrived safe and sound about an hour ago... she's all tucked in - BHK and I will be turning in for the night shortly, too. Until tomorrow, dear journal, here's some stuff.

METEORS THIS SUNDAY! Can't Forget!

The Red Line has resumed normal service after a suspicious package closed the Dupont Circle, Woodley Park, and Cleveland Park stations for several hours.

Metro Transit Police bomb technicians X-rayed the box, then safely disrupted it with a water cannon. The box contained paper and cardboard. The train was taken to a nearby rail yard for further investigation.

Sad to hear that Dresden Files was canned - I was digging it. It didn't look like it was too expensive to produce, but who knows what was going on under the hood.

Ah, well... The nice thing about one less good tv show is that it's one less tv show, period. More time for me to focus on other things.

Found this on the Icehouse list -

Mixing Icehouse and Second Life? I'm lucky that I've got BHK and the lads to intervene or I'd be wasting hours fiddling with that. (If it were 2 years or so ago, I'd probably be in there right now, working on the code and looking at what was what.) I haven't tried Regular ol' Torpedo yet, but it looks like fun.

Speaking of Doodles (last entry) and Pyramids, here are some more random doodles drawn on the bus. I'm fiddling wit hthe idea of a multi-tiered gameboard - some standard chase-game variant like monopoly or sorry, with different abilities or events on each level. also thinking about a Rock/Paper/Scissors element to the nests/trees, as far as landing and capture are concerned - big beats middle, middle beats little, little beats big. I'd like to finish it in time for this year's Ice Game Design Competition, but I doubt I'll make it. Maybe next year!

One year until 08/08/08!

I found out today that the family across the street from us has lived in that house for the last 23 or so years. Adam, the youngest son at age 18 has lived in the same home his whole life. I wonder how often that happens anymore? I don't think I've put more than five years of life in the same building - I didn't even spend more than 2 years in the same school until I hit 9th grade as my folks moved around quite a bit.

I'm not sure I can even imagine how intimately familiar a person comes to be with that sort of environment... that kid must know every stone and fence within a 10-mile area. He must've seen some very significant changes over the last two decades.. North Beach was a bit of a biker town before it got an influx of bay front property money. There is quite a cultural microcosm these days, but the upper-middle class seems to be taking the lead.

Today's weather is *evil* - Current Temperature is 100°F, "feels like" 109. And that's at "partly cloudy". How much hotter would it be with full-bore sun?

Totally random thought formed on the train - do the words cowherd (someone who herds cows) and coward (someone who shows fear in the face of danger) have a connection? I need to research that.

[edit - Well, I guess not. Word History: A coward is one who "turns tail." The word comes from Old French couart, coart, "coward," and is related to Italian codardo, "coward." Couart is formed from coe, a northern French dialectal variant of cue, "tail" (from Latin cda), to which the derogatory suffix -ard was added. This suffix appears in bastard, laggard, and sluggard, to name a few. A coward may also be one with his tail between his legs. In heraldry a lion couard, "cowardly lion," was depicted with his tail between his legs. So a coward may be one with his tail hidden between his legs or one who turns tail and runs like a rabbit, with his tail showing.]

So, it's August... only a couple of weeks until BHK's birthday, Father in-laws birthday, and we're looking to have Emily over in a weekend - and then the all of the Newsoms over perhaps two weeks after that. Emily is about 5 years old now, and she reminds me of little bit of Wendy, way back when 9even though Wendy was maybe twice that age. I still remember acting like a monkey with [personal profile] graypumpkin for her, over a decade ago. Ook ook, extend the upper lip, scratch the noggin and the armpits, do a bowlegged walk... still brings a giggle to the young ladies. I doubt the Wendy would as be amused these days... she's got to be 21 by now? maybe 22? She's probably into more "grown-up" pursuits. I wonder how she and Marty are doing?

Thoughts for Emily's visit.. Baltimore Aquarium, Blink (maybe try Uno?), Walking on the Boardwalk / Beach, Playstation, Fireworks, and the Candy Store. None of those are set in stone and there are other possibilities, too.

Hey, it's August first! Happy Lughnasadh, the holy day of Lludd!
(If you celebrate it... I don't generally do so myself, but do like to say the word Lughnasadh. )

To celebrate, here's an agricultural pic from our garden, taken just this week.

Pepper pic from the garden - looks better large-wallpaper size.

No relation to the holiday, but also recently seen -

Also seen - Dump trucks while I was riding the subway at about 60mph

Been busy, have some game and book links, dear journal!

New joystiq review of Icehouse (also Enemy Chocolatier ), and as a result, found a place to play games online in real time.

You've got to download a small Java app (gamut ) (though they are working on an HTML implementation), but it's clean, quick and fun if you can find folks to play with.

Back to reading on my ride in the subway...until I find some tv show that BHK doesn't want to watch to put on the PSP. just finished Red Nails - getting my pulp fix on. Plenty free and legal to read here. Just scroll down to Howard,( Robert E. )

  • "Turning Heat Into Electricity Through Sound": pretty much what it sounds like. A group in Utah has made a gadget where thermal gradients drive air currents that produce sound waves, which are turned into electrical signals by piezoelectric transducers.
  • "All-Optical Magnetic Recording: a Dutch group has written information onto a magnetic material using polarized light rather than the usual magnetic heads (like in a hard disk). This could potentially allow faster disk writing on smaller scales than can be done with magnets. Just think how small your next iPod could be...

Took Bugah & Co to Bob Evans for a farewell breakfast... MN was sneaky and footed the bill. We're going to have to work out some sort of system of permissions for bill catching! Poor Boog didn't want to head out, but Em seemed ready to head on home.

Relatively mellow after the fireworks on the 3rd. More grilling of hot dogs and veggie burgers (out of propane), Louise, Doug, Tina, Kendall, Adam and BHK all got together for some good eats and limited fireworks... every time we went somewhere to shoot off some airborne pretties, the police or a homeowner came out and said no sir, no sir. The fountains were quite pretty, anyhow. Areas we were blocked include the back yard, the private beach opposite the buildings, and "forbidden beach" which is public, but right next to some big homes. A fellow came out and took down the plate numbers of everyone parked there... sort of jerky behavior for the 4th. I can understand not wanting stuff too close to your house, but we were shooting the beach and it was just 9:30pm... not too late by any one's estimation. Ah well, the food was good and we all got to hang out a bit, and enjoy a midweek day off.

There was a tornado watch in DC - just as well that we didn't head to that mob scene. The National Mall was briefly evacuated around 5 p.m., forcing the thousands gathered for 4th of July festivities to take shelter in nearby monuments and federal government buildings. By 7 p.m. the Mall was re-opened, though everyone had to pass back through security checkpoints set-up in the area again.

We headed home - BHK and I just enjoyed a little peace and quiet come the end of the day... not a bad thing at all.

Restless night sleeping, accidentally booted Newt off the bed once, but he stuck with me throughout the night. BHK was restless too, but I didn't leg-sweep her out. Pye visited briefly, but high-tailed it after the barest commotion. I dreamt that BHK and I were hunting animals, tagging them for reference, and re-releasing 'em into the wild. A side effect of geocaching, perhaps?

Bugah & Neil went fishing - to no avail, as the water was too choppy.

Half day tomorrow! North Beach Fireworks are going to be something else!

via jwz - Search for Lonesome George mate is long shot
While scientists search for a mate for "Lonesome George" -- the last known survivor of a species of Galapagos tortoise -- some say the effort to fend off extinction may be in vain. Even if a mate is found, George has not been interested in reproducing in the past and may not know how, former keepers and others who have worked with him said.

"He has problems ... he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing," said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.

Grigioni, now back in Switzerland, said she could normally get tortoises to ejaculate within minutes, but spent months manually stimulating George and never extracted semen from him.

Age is not George's problem. He is estimated at between 60 and 90 years old, and could live to be 200 and still reproduce, scientists say.

The visual differences in tortoises from different islands were among the features of the Galapagos that helped 19th Century British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. Since then, the tortoises have been hunted by pirates for their meat and their habitat eaten away by goats introduced onto the islands. George, who weighs 198 pounds, was found on Pinta in 1971.

Reviewing Openads for the company's ad server for the web. it seems pretty reputable and reliable, thus far.

Fire drill this morning was a welcome break in the day - cool outside, everyone seemed laid back and calm - helped move the rest of the time that much more rapidly. the 2pm meeting went well... lots of good information for me to ruminate over the next few projects. I really dig that I'm in an environment that will allow me to use the skills I have! (Last gig wasn't bad, but a lot of repetition. This time, there's a lot of room for creative thought along with brute force.

Day closed with S'mores over a fire pit, some preview fireworks, and then Bugah and I played a bit of "Destroy All Humans". Not a bad thing.
