I've realized that Deerfield has replaced Fort Lauderdale's Homeless and Junkie population with Iguanas and Butterflies. Every day I'm out and about, I see wildlife rather than being approached for a handout or worse. I'm glad of that. It's amazing what a difference fifteen miles can make. Riding the bike is actually a realistic option, and if I want to check out the more urban decay, I'm able to get to it quickly.

Heavy-duty rains early this morning. I hope I can get to the train station without getting soaked! I'll be taking my trusty, rusty waterproof GPS with me to see how well it tracks my movement. I really ought to download some more detailed local maps for it.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian man who was believed dead caused panic when he returned, causing villagers to think he had come back as a ghost, the Times of India reported Monday.

Children screamed "Ghost! Ghost!" and villagers locked their doors when Raju Raghuvanshi returned from jail earlier this month to his village in Mandla district in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Raghuvanshi's brothers, who had shaved their heads to mourn his death in line with Hindu tradition, fled when he appeared, the paper reported.

Villagers and family members have ostracized him, forcing Raghuvanshi to file a complaint with local police. The village council has demanded he prove he is not a ghost, but the paper did not say what kind of proof the elders wanted.

Raghuvanshi's troubles arose after he was jailed last year. In prison, he was admitted to hospital with a stomach ailment from which he recovered but a distant relative told his family he had died.

Still processing this information:

Doug Wu called... he's a dad... Sired a child with illyana (a gay woman who initially dated Cathy Wu, but that didn't work out and Illlyana inherited Doug as a pal after his marriage to Cathy dissolved.)

It seems that Illyana wanted a kid and Doug is the biological father... the girl Kayla (sp?) will be raised in a household of four singles. She's seven days old at this point, and I hear that she's beautiful, and quite healthy. I think Doug'll be quite nurturing and give boundless love to his daughter.

I had no idea that Illyana was gay.. I somehow was under the impression that she was Doug's SO rather than POSSLQ... I suspect there's more of a family vibe there, all things considered, too.

Discovered some interesting things I didn't know... Doug's working as a caregiver for folks with cerebral palsy and the like, his household has no real internet access and they seem to frown on gaming (viewed as a colossal waste of otherwise useful energy) . It also seems that Doug is the primary breadwinner for the unit, with two of the members out of work

I talked to him for about an hour last night, and we caught up on things... we didn't know what sort of work the other was doing these days... oddly, I don't think we talked about comics once, even though he's pretty much the Ancient One to my Stephen Strange when it comes to TV/Comic book history and remembrances.

I'm officially sick of the Bard's Tale. total play time, about 5 hours, give or take, in 1-2 hour bites. some cute moments, but meh. If I could save at any time, and not just at certain way points, I'd have liked it a lot more. Nothing makes me toss a game aside faster than "Whoops, you lost, go back and do the same 20 minute brainless series of combats again". After doing that thrice or so, I'm finished.

Maybe I'll come back to it after I've taken a FarCry break. Maybe not. Depends on what's on my plate. I'm only up for so much whack-a-mole, no matter how cute the in-jokes are.

It's been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I don't know about that, but I have been seeing a lot of "flattery" lately. Something I learned via a random comment on my crab picture. -

Not to be picky but crabs have eight legs, not counting the claws. You could even argue that the mouth parts are modified legs. Insects, like ants and beetles, have six legs. Crabs are crustaceans and they may have any number of legs and are not limited to eight as far as I know.

Thanks, sandrino!

Visited MP for a bit in the morning, and it was certainly the highlight of my day. We had breakfast and hung out a bit, and then she headed to her sister's place in Miami for a BBQ. She's staying in town until the 14th, and then will be in Colombia until Mid-September. I'll miss her quite a bit... thank goodness for email and telephony!

I stayed in Fort Lauderdale to visit with my brother. It took a while... he took the route 50 up, and was out of sorts... fell asleep on the bus, and hopped off in a semi-stupor. He met me at the Movie theater, and I bought us tickets to see Land of the Dead. He Sprung for nachos, and we settled in for some down and dirty zombie-action.

About 30 minutes into the film, he asked me if he was on a bike when we met... I replied no, and he got distressed... turns out he left it on the bus bike rack, and forgot it when he hopped off at 2pm. He stepped into the aisle to call Broward County Transit and report it missing, while I continued to watch the movie.

An hour later, I'm stepping out of the theater, wondering where my brother is. It turns out he was on hold, and fell asleep waiting for someone from lost and found to answer him because it was the 4th holiday.

So, he missed the movie. He didn't seem too upset about it. We walked back to the bus terminal, where we asked f the bike had been turned in yet.... the 5:30 bus was just rolling up, and lucky for him, bro's bike was riding on the front. Happy ending there, anyhow.

Oh, I nearly forgot, between the theater and the terminal, two homeless guys walking together tried to shake us down for a handout. Bro said "sorry, I've got nothing..." and one of the bums gave him a dirty look and said "bullshit". There was almost a fight, but avoided it because nobody wanted to get the police involved. I held bro back, and BS's friend restrained him. I thought for sure that I was either going to have to take some swings in myself.

Random Scotto factoid: I used carry a straight razor for self-defense. I don't now. I'm more worried about AIDS than I am of an attacker's fists. I've thought about walking with a cane again, in order to have some sort of club handy, but I'd rather have two hands free during my walks... same reason I'm not crazy about umbrellas. I fear carrying a gun.

Land of the Dead was good... and I actually sympathized a little for the zombies. A few pointless scenes, but I rather liked the Cameo by Simon Pegg, too. I especially liked Zombie Clown and Zombie Moses.

Evil Dead: Regeneration - looks good.

Good morning, and welcome to Autumn, at last! Traditionally a time for change, Autumn has always signaled the beginning of a renewal of life to me.

Though I live in a land where seasons are divided by how moist things are; a place where you can find seas of both brine and concrete, my heart resides elsewhere. Wide open spaces, with tame deer that like to nibble on rosebushes and enjoy a nice salt lick. Trees colored with every warm hue possible... golds, oranges and deep rust-reds. Someday I'll be there, content in a room lit by purest moonlight, the sounds of acorns tapping the roof, randomly.

Here's hoping that everyone enjoys the coming season, the changing of colors, Hallowe'en, new scents and the cooling, snuggly times ahead.

The last night of summer was a nearly perfect one for a walk. The 7-11 had the Diet Pepsi Slushie machine working just right, and the air was balmy, but not hot. It could be my mind playing tricks, but Autumn is on its way, for honest and true. I sat by the new river for a few, and looked into the water, just thinking... it amazes me that there are so many quiet, natural places in the city. Things laid out in strips and pieces.. it didn't feel landscaped at all, but very natural. I think that I prefer to visit the river over the ocean, for whatever reason, despite the sea's wonderful breezes. The river is more serene, relaxed.

Today's Moment of Voodoo: The Soul.

In the Voudoun religion of Haiti, one's existence is made up of five parts: n'ame, the spirit of the flesh; z'etoile, the star of destiny; corps cadavre, the mortal flesh; gros bon ange, a general life force that is recycled and not unique to each person, and ti bon ange (or petit bon ange), one's personal essence and the source of one's aura. Only the gros bon ange and ti bon ange are seen as being part of the soul, but all five parts are regarded as important in both life and death, so the distinction is somewhat blurred. The corps cadavre can be made into a zombi (zombie), while the ti bon ange can be captured to create a kind of spectral undead called a zombi astral (spirit zombie).

The CDC reports on who died of what during Hurricane Charley. A total of 31 deaths of which 17 "involved blunt trauma caused by injuries from falling trees, flying debris, and destroyed physical structures" and one drowning.

A peek at the New Fantastic Four... Hmm, the thing doesn't look quite "Rocky" there... I guess you could classify him as between rock and "sack of wet oatmeal", but I like the other three. (Except Johnny should be a blond, and look a bit younger than Sue.)They made Alicia Masters black for whatever reason, too... I'm still disappointed that they didn't make Billy Dee Williams play Two-Face in a later Batman movie, after doing the Harvey Dent bit in the first one. I don't seem to mind them varying the look of secondary characters as much as the primaries. (A blond wonder Woman, Read - Cathy Lee Crosby, is a big screw up, as far as I'm concerned.)

I suspect the Incredibles will blow the FF out of the water.

Hero Machine 2.0 is out, for folks that want to make cartoon heroes.

Random Scotto Journal Factoids. This Journal is exactly Four years, Four Months and Four days old today. The last day that I didn't post at least once in my journal was August 20, 2000. (about Four years and one month ago.) As of this writing, I've made 6895 posts (in 1587 days... so that's a little over 4.3 posts per day)... I was a lot more manic in my posts back at the beginning... now I just use horizontal rules to break up a longer post, rather than post a bunch or itty-bitties during the day.

I wonder what that says? A polite way might be that I'm good at commitment.
