Amy's mom passed away today after battling with lung cancer for quite some time.  I didn't know her, but my heart goes out to Amy and her family. I need to call her tomorrow and express my condolences. We knew it was coming, but it's still a shock.

Shots, and off to southern states to grab a couple of pepper plants - saw an adorable pair of kids. Little girl in riding pants and very friendly, and her little brother who reminded me of JD at 6 years old. We also picked up some thistle seed for the finches (so Pye and Newt have a little outside wildlife to watch)

After that a lovely church wine and craft show... We got a Christmas ornament with a pair of origami cranes (cherry blossom pattern paper) inside of a rounded cube.... and a lovely packet of bake sale goodies. Aggression cookies (oatmeal), molasses and chocolate chip.

Episcopal church had the following on the bulletin board:

The comedian Robin Williams is an Episcopalian, and he has created a funny "Top Ten" List of reasons to be an Episcopalian.

10. No snake handling.

9. You can believe in dinosaurs.

8. Male and female, God created them; male and female, we ordain them.

7. You don't have to check your brains at the door.

6. Pew aerobics.

5. Church year is color coded!

4. Free wine on Sunday.

3. All of the pageantry, none of the guilt.

2. You don't have to know how to swim to get baptized.

And the number one reason for being an Episcopalian:

1. No matter what you believe, there's bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you.

I can dig that.

After the Church shindig, we Shakespeare on the Boardwalk - Much ado about nothing. TM's neighbor Kevin was in it, as was Guppy (twin beach players )

Gentle evening last night - watched 27 dresses with BHK and Chris over supper - gigantic bean salad, with left over zucchini and Thai curry soup. Delicious.

The movie wasn't bad as far as chick flicks go... The most curious thing to me was that there were no minorities, elderly or babies in the film of note. With the exception of the Girl's dad, everyone was a white 20-something...and I think of New York being pretty diverse.

The formula for impulse: average force x time

I suspect that I have only about 1/2 the acceleration though, so it likely balances out, force-wise.

Last Night's Din-din is even better as breakfast (due to it self-marinating) Lazy bachelor recipe, but here it is.

1/2 tsp. cumin

1/2 to 1 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil

Can you tell I was at home on call yesterday, dear journal?

Have an mp3 with lyrics to meet my current mood:

... )

I was walkin' to the kitchen for some Golden Grahams
When I accidentally stepped into an alternate dimension
And soon I was abducted by some aliens from space
Who kinda looked like Jamie Farr

They sucked out my internal organs
And they took some polaroids
And said I was a darn good sport
And as a way of saying thank you
They offered to transport me back to
Any point in history that I would care to go

And so I had them send me back to last Thursday night
So I could pay my phone bill on time
Just then the floating disembodied head of
Colonel Sanders started yelling

Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you thought was just so
Important doesn't matter

... )

I realized yesterday that I'm a bit of a sensualist. I love getting input from all of my senses.... I'd quite miss any of them, even scent and taste. I love holding Newton, and feeling him snuggle softly against me. I love catching a slight trace of perfume in the air, especially after a lovely woman walks past. Hearing a child laugh (or any honest, happy laughter) is a wonderful thing. Music. The taste of a grilled cheese sammich on a cool day...or a cold beer after doing yardwork. Breath on back of my neck before having it kissed. A meaty punch into the heavy bag. A drop of sweat running down your spine once you start really getting warmed up. Foot rubs, or the contented sigh you hear when you give a good foot rub to someone else. Rain on the window, with thunder in the background. Hydrogen peroxide bubbling on a cut. Newt barking/trilling. People-watching for shapes, colors and patterns of movement. Urban decay's textures, easy to feel or see. Bugs' multifaceted rainbow eyes. It's all really good stuff.

I've wanted a personal jetpack for the longest time. I blame the ol' James Bond and Johnny Quest movies/show.

Whoosh! Even if it could just do enough to super leap across a traffic intersection -- that'd be fine.

I'm tempted to pick up the Monster Island series of games, even though I know odds are good that I'll never sit down and play it with anyone. (Unless I visit [livejournal.com profile] graypumpkin in Texas, someday, and even then, we'd probably play Champions or Zombies!.) I think all gamers have a slight compulsion to collect genre stuff, anyhow. There's a 2 for 1 going for a measly $10 right now... maybe I'll gift it to myself as an excuse not to eat takeout for two days.

Training went well.. a good number of concerned parents showed up, and everything rolled smoothly. Big Kahuna was a surprise visitor... must've come right over after getting off of the plane. The School staff was wonderfully courteous and very helpful... the media center brought back many memories as a page, cataloger and bookstore employee. I always did like the kid's books the most.

Tech trouble seems to be simmered down now. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

I've been getting into the habit of picking up a little dinner once a week or so on the way home from work at this little carribean diner over by the bus stop. I've become rather well-liked there, because I appreciate good food, and take a moment to talk to the folks during the slow times. Lots of Veggie, even Vegan options to eat, which surprised me, and is what keeps me coming back. Good food, lots of it, inexpensive and a friendly atmosphere. What's not to like? There are advantages to not looking like a suit... I think folks there are a lot more comfortable talking with a "clean cut" hippie-type guy, at least at first. They make a Veggie-mango stir-fry sort of thing that is awesome, and the plantains are decadent.

I decided briefly that I wasn't comfortable with the C's around Newt. I think that Jan or even Danny might get careless, and do something that would cause Newt to somehow get hurt out of the house... I'm being irrational. I came close to having a panic attack just thinking of poor Newt, out in a hurricane. It sort of saddens me to be this distrustful of Dan and his wife, but they just don't know better, and are prone to carelessness. I don't think that I should stay, here, but if I go to Danny's place, I'm going to have to lay down some ground rules. Maybe I'll stay with Newt in the guest bathroom the whole time. [update: Of course ,I ended up going to Dan and Janet's, and everything turned out fine)

The Entrance to the Swap Shop. There's a drive-in theater, the only one in good repair within several miles that I know about.  Despite the incoming vehicles, it wasn't uncomfortably crowded.

Indian Market )

To market, to market... There was a lot of West Indian food available... Got some curry, but left the gum arabic, cheese balls and spicy dried chick peas for another day. (By the way, the Bin Laden / Gum Arabic connection seems to be false.)  This was my last spot to visit for ingredients for Coconut Curry Tofu. )

Veggie Row )

Yum... row after row of fresh veggies. Man, pineapple was expensive, though everything else was very reasonable. The row behind this one was fresh flowers. Bright, tropical orchids seem to be the flavor of the day. Prices were good and I was tempted to get some. If I wasn't limited by two arms to carry, I would've picked some up for the office. There was a guy with a grinder for sugarcane juice, but I have no idea how many points that'd be worth on WW.

Veggie Row, again )

The folks shopping (as well as selling) were primarily black (generally Haitian) or Hispanic.I don't know why there are so few white folk shopping for fresh produce...I think it's so much better than packaged stuff at Publix. You can inspect the food more readily, it's cheaper, and so many more varieties to choose from. Maybe folks from other countries are more used to open air markets, and city-types aren't into venturing far from the florescent lighting.

Wall to wall stuff for sale )

The closer you get to the building proper, there's a tent city full of sales-folk offering all kinds of wares. Shoes, watches, towels and perfume seemed to take up the largest share. As usual, everything is marked in at least three languages. There was a "martial arts weapon" store, that had a huge sign forbidding sales to anyone under 18... I suspect that anyone over 18 buying a Rambo knife or throwing stars might be more dangerous than any kid doing so.

After getting past the tents and pushcarts, it was time to enter a region built out of concrete and steel, rather than canvas and wood.

Steps leading up )

Lit stairs leading up to the arcade, and indoor go-cart track. (electric...but they're fast.) It was a lot darker, but the camera compensated for me by leaving the shutter open. There was a lot of space inside, but it was cluttered and chaotic. I can only imagine how hard it'd have been on my father, who lacked depth perception. One odd thing about my pop was that he couldn't appreciate 3-D movies or the Viewmaster I had as a kid.

Too Much Stuff! )

Seriously... look at this. That's just a random shot I took because I was shocked by just how convoluted everything was. There were more mirrored columns, neon and little round light bulbs to be found than the South Florida fair. I look forward to hitting the Seminole Casino later on to compare and contrast. I suspect the casino will be a little more "tasteful", as far as that word can apply to Casino/Circus-type decor.

Blues Brothers, Flash )

For comparison - Blues Brothers - taken with flash, regular shutter. I really should reread my manual again to see what cool built-in stuff I'm not using. What I really need is to make a bottle-cap monopod, to help me take steady shots.

Blues Brothers, Shutter )

Taken with no flash - Shutter auto-opened for compensation. I've been seeing Jake a lot lately. Last weekend at Riverwalk in a car, and now up the road. I wonder how many castings of these guys have been made? I've heard it said that things come in threes... I wonder where or if he'll pop up next weekend?

Some kind of circus Yard sale / open-air storage )

Frozen Band Clowns. Presumably waiting in suspended animation to be batter-fried and served up as carnival food...or maybe to come to life after the building closes down, to hunt lost little kids (or any Coulrophobes left behind to fend for themselves). Why do clowns and machetes go so well together?

I wonder if anyone has used the term coulrophage yet, to describe a clown-eater? I may be the first... it's not coming up on google, m-w, or anywhere else I've chosen to look so far. Considering the root word koulon also means limb, it might be too general. A person who likes drumsticks off the chicken might not like eating Bozo the clown... and vice versa.

On another note, I'm curious about the Marianist (Society of Mary) beliefs. That's the doctrine of the school where Danny teaches. I oversimplify, but it seems to me that to most Christians, Mary's position is sort of secondary to either that of the creator or Jesus. Most versions of Christianity that I know of view Mary seems to be more of a delivery system for Jesus, rather than someone to focus on instead... The Marianists don't seem to deify her, but instead she is used as an example of how to live in faith.

In my mind, the closest analogy is that of God being a fire-fighter, Mary's the Bucket, and Jesus is the water. Marianists want people to learn how to be better buckets. (Yeah, that's much better than my first thought, of a God : policeman, Mary : .38 special, Jesus : Bullet.)

The Justice League seems to be doing ok with the 30 minute format... I liked the Hawk and Dove episode, and I think that Ditko wouldn't mind the treatment of the characters. The "Wonder Woman in her civvies" was nice to see, too, but does every gal have to wear belly-shirts? I don't really mind much, but a little variety would be nice... and cloaked shuttle looks like her transparent plane.

I didn't realize that the Hero that's being released in theaters is the same Hero I've had on DVD for over a year. (Thanks for pointing it out, Kevin.) I don't think it needs to be recut or remixed at all... so I think that I'll just kick back, and enjoy the original in the comfort of my own home. Thank goodness for the local Chinese market! I honestly thought it was a coincidence in name. So many tales with Hero/Hiro in the title, and I don't normally follow Miramax Drama.

Snickers with almonds is very tasty when frozen, but I preferred the chilled tangerine I also had for breakfast. Tasty morsels. I don't use the word morsel often enough. Or Scrumdiddlyumptious. Ok, ok...I lied, dear journal.... I say scrumdiddlyumptious at least once or twice a month. Though, to make up for the "morsel" imbalance, I also hardly ever say "Oh, snap".

The soft, spicy odor of incense, wafting in from the corridor between my bedroom and bath brings me calm on hectic days. It's getting easier for me to realize when I'm tense lately, and once I know that I'm stressed, I can channel that attitude out to make way for more productive behavior.

When I decide to veg out...I usually sit Indian-style or other comfortable position, usually with Newt nearby. I let all the random jetsam spinning around in my mind slowly settle onto the floor of my mind for proper storage or disposal. Sometimes whole books hit the ground when the mental wind slows down, but usually it's closer to fortune-cookie slips of paper and multi-colored index cards with quickly scrawled information on it, including "continued on card number XXX" written on the bottom. Sometimes the connected card is nearby or someplace that I can retrieve it quickly, other times, it's probably in one of the piles off in one of the corners.

I picture my mental room as octagonal-shaped, having hardwood floors and highlights, a network of bookshelf-columns radiating out from the center, and glass walls leading up to a covered dome with a skylight on top. Secret Memories of an ancestor that was into trepanation? I don't see any self-surgery in my future. The amount of light inside reflects my mindset, with thick drapes that could blot out an atomic blast when darkness is absolutely needed.

There are monkeys, too. Or Ghosts. Maybe Monkey Ghosts. That's it. Probably genetically enhanced... or with some sort of mystic talisman thingie.

Storywise, sometimes I don't see myself as a main character. It's easy to fall in the role of support, or walk-on... no limelight, but more like Wilson on Home Improvement, though, if I was to stretch the example, I suppose that I could grab the Al role here and there. I try to be helpful and am mostly soft spoken, a little too off the beaten path to be a primary focus. I suspect that'd change if I was under the same roof with my sweetheart, rather than having us end up being the wacky neighbors.

Then again, there was the Grizzly Adams TV show. Random trivia... Ben the bear was named for Ben Franklin.

Yesterday's eats - Thanks to WWCalc and Philbo )

Going to try this for tonight, if all goes well:

Mexican Casserole

Serves 6

The Filling:

  • 2 green peppers, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes (I prefer the Muir Glen brand)

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen corn

  • 2 cans kidney beans (3 cups)

  • 2 T chipotle en adobo paste (Canned chile chipotles / and puree in the blender. It stays good in the fridge for several weeks, or in the freezer for at least 6 months)

The Crust

  • 1 tablespoon flour

  • 3/4 cup cornmeal

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 6 tablespoons milk, (I'll use 1%)

  • 1 tablespoon corn oil

  • 3 ounces cheddar cheese

  • 3 tbsp chopped green Mexican chilies

Preheat the oven to 425. Sautee the onions with the green pepper until the onion starts to color, about five minutes. Pour in the rest of the filling ingredients, and simmer for 10 minutes, while you make the crust.

Mix the flour, cornmeal, flour, salt, and baking powder together in a medium sized bowl. Mix together the milk, egg and corn oil, and add to the cornmeal mixture, and stir until it comes together. Fold in the chilies, and half of the cheese.

Pour the filling in a medium casserole dish, and spoon the topping over the top. Sprinkle on the remaining cheese.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is set, and the cheese has turned golden.

I'm ranked as the 9th top player for august 2003 so far. (Scott von Berg 20726.49% growth -Rank: 4208, $104,132.43 current worth / $500.00 start of month)

As it stands now, I've only invested in my own... when you register your blog, you get 1000 shares of your own journal, but maybe I'll expand outward to folks on my reading list as well. Starting with $500 virtual dollars, and the stock value of my site, my portfolio is worth $104,271.60 I set up a goofy little RSS feed ([livejournal.com profile] scotto_shares) that'll tell me when / how the share value fluctuates. Oddly, since my journal can be accessed in three distinctly different links, via http://scottobear.livejournal.com, http://www.livejournal.com/~scottobear and http://www.livejournal.com/users/scottobear, it's valued in three different ways, depending on investments. s.l.com is currently worth $49.91 each - 249.52 p/e, ~ is worth $34.42 each -172.10 p/e, and users is $19.62 each - 98.03 p/e

Looking at things, I see that [livejournal.com profile] chrishaas has already placed a bid on the most expensive of the available shares, but at no profit to me. He'd stand a greater chance of profit by bidding on public shares in the "users or ~" version. For simplicity of bidding, I've made those mentioned in this paragraph as direct links to the respective blogshares. If you want to play, I recommend the one that's going for $19.62 each, rather than the $49.91. (Less than half price, with growth potential. I think the middle one "users" has the most growth possibility, because that's the default listing.)

Other folks listed on blogshares that I might look into investing in (- (typed in to the search, many on my list haven't been listed I'm tempted to post my reading list here, so that they get spidered) [livejournal.com profile] edbook (here), [livejournal.com profile] flying_blind (here), [livejournal.com profile] meredith (here), [livejournal.com profile] sweetalyssm (here) and [livejournal.com profile] tarpo (here). If anyone else sets up an account, or ends up on blogshares, let me know, so I can invest. :) The above listings were spidered (many from my journal, I'd imagine), and aren't officially "on the market" yet.

Of course, totally private or friends only-blogs aren't tradable, nor are "non-indexed sites" as there's nothing for the public to link to or track. Communities also seem to be out of the action, which is a shame, because I imagine the [livejournal.com profile] menstrualhut would do well. Also, Weblogs.com has to be active in your userinfo, I think.

Regarding the Vampire game... they've added a new element. Peacekeepers. There are flyers pasted up on many walls in the city, advertising "Peacekeepers Missions". There are very small quite useless maps scrawled on the poorly photocopies scraps of paper, but the addresses are quite clear - the newbie mission is at Emerald and 67th, while the others are at Unicorn and 33rd and Emerald and 33rd respectively. It looks like 'mission' is used in the sense of a building, rather than the sense of a quest, but it's not very clear at all.

The Expedition Company... seems normal enough for vacations and getaways until you get to the part about the hollow earth expedition.

Nifty sounding drink that I've never consumed - Dead Lizard )

Wood that works - Really cool kinetic sculptures.A little pricey for my pocketbook, but nifty, especially since there are no batteries or electricity involved.

Buckled down, and put Norton Systemworks 2003 on my system... it was long overdue. the 2001 updates just weren't enough anymore after the last service pack. It's pretty much the same stuff, with a mildly shinier interface.

It's been thunder-rumbling since last night, but the rain itself has been coming only in brief, but heavy downpours. Florida weather will never cease to amaze me.

a year ago - went to the singing fountain, sleestaks, telemarketers, Art conspiracy (No Longer allows remote linking! bah!), rainy laundry day, evil ashtrays, Signs, halloween costume thoughts

I wonder why that never caught on in the states?

Monopoly Cereal... where's my insulin? The Newest Cereal... Monopoly, Based on the board game. Basically Cinnamon toast crunch with marshmallows. That's too sickly-sweet even for me.

Added a silly little tagboard to the toybox section. We'll see how long it lasts. The Toybox is going to be something of a lab for a while.

Carnivore client is a pretty fascinating way to gather data. The interpretation of cnn.com is rather pretty, to boot.

For any Vampires - Discount magic shop between Gibbon & 28th, and Gum & 29th. Great prices!

Wow... I must've needed a nap desperately, earlier. I nodded my head for a moment, and woke up like 2 hours later. It was like I had a total system shutdown. Newt woke me up with a couple of swabs and a desire to chase paper wads. There's something to be said to being awakened by a little furball that wants to just play.

Newt! The best alarm clock ever!

Skimming around assorted communities and discovered consumer reports review on condoms.

This spectacular “blue marble” image is the most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet. These images are freely available to educators, scientists, museums, and the public.

The hungry tiger gave me a recipe for sort of a mock uttapam (Indian style pancakes).. Designed primarily as a method to get curry from your plate into your mouth. Claims are that they are "chewy, flavorful, plentiful, and excellent for transporting curry from plate to mouth. They would make a nice snack on their own, too, and I think they would even do well made ahead of time and reheated, so don't be afraid of leftovers."

The proportions below make about 10 pancakes if you make the batter on the thin side and the pancakes about the size of a saucer. recipe )

seemingly normal doughnutsew... who makes a chocolate frosted apple-filled doughnut? I just ate it for breakfast...my bro brought me the doughnut last night... he went on a goodie run, and dropped it off late. Another perq of having him next door, to be sure! :)

I thought it'd be Bavarian cream or something. It's an unusual combination of flavors. not bad, just unexpected. it was a glazed, filled doughnut, with chocolate icing on top... you figure... custard or cream, right?

Wrong-o... Apple-cinnamon.

Nice sugar rush to follow, though, I'm sure. :)

Ok... off to work, Mr. Scotto, chocolate/apple gizzard guy.

Update on that spiced Tofu ... it was good, but not *crazy good*... maybe a 6/10. I'd make it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way. I think I can whip something a little zippier with many of the supplies at hand.

William Christopher is 70? Who knew he was voices in the Smurfs, as well as Father Mulcahy?

Cute movie ads... Fellowship of the ring is the best of the lot.

Little known Movie factoid - In the short story that 2001: A space odyssey was based on, the Monoliths were crystal pyramids.

Little known Scotto factoid - I like a lot of science fiction, but feel that 2001 is basically plotless and highly overrated. It's easy to assign a great depth of meaning to places there are none. I like to find shapes in clouds, too...that doesn't mean that there really is a horsie sliding down the back of George Washington's head.

Okie... going for a little bike travel, see what I can see on the outside... be back later, dear journal.

A year ago today - dreams of my sweetheart and I, sex, and giant ants in the old west, nipguards, random aims.

Two years ago today - spirals, tom jones, crazy drunk link, newt's crinkle flea, dr t and the women, and a cool, dream-comic strip.

This is what I'm going to make for supper this weekend (after I get the ingredients)

Recipe inside. Yum! )

I go to work at noon tomorrow! I bet it'll be nice to be back on Scotto-schedule. Hopping in the bath for a few. until later, dear journal!

Just in case you haven't heard, there's been a massive recall of tainted beef. Here's the thing--beef recalls are really difficult to do. The government can't force the meat industry to recall beef, & usually by the time the meat industry issues the recall, the tainted meat has gotten pretty far out into the world. So, lay off the beef for a while (if you don't already do so).
