Here's a hidden program in Windows Xp, it is a very useful graphics tool for designing your own fonts, logos and icons.

To start the program go to Run in the Start Menu then type eudcedit and click OK.

It will then open the program, and you just select a hexadecimal code for your first character from the grid to start then click OK and you are now ready to begin designing. Using the set of drawing tools on the left you can do your own design. When you have finished you can save your character, either in a particular font, or all fonts. via

Happiness is Roddy MacDowell with silly string on most recent Columbo. I honestly don't know if I prefer him in protagonist or antagonist roles. It did really put the focus on the dangers of smoking and "modern answering machines", if nothing else. It seems that Columbo went from drinking bourbon on the job in '68 to passing on booze entirely in '72. I wonder if the Mrs. turned him around?

Modded my homepage a bit last night - added random flickr pics to my gallery page, tweaked the geocoding to reflect my new location, and removed 4 dead links from my front page. (they decided to cancel the $10 per link, so it's all yahoo, now.) A few other little edits snuck in here and there, tacked on revised colors and a few other touch-ups. I think a major overhaul will happen in the next month or so. A new background image and perhaps some revised frames.

Danny claimed that the earth is still cooling from it's creation, but I called shenanigans on him...so I had to look it up.

How is magma made?

The short answer: There is a lot of heat within the earth, and this heat is produced by radioactive decay of naturally-occurring radioactive elements within the earth. It is the same process that allows a nuclear reactor to generate heat, but in the earth, the radioactive material is much less concentrated. However, because the earth is so much bigger than a nuclear power plant it can produce a lot of heat.

So... my question followed... are all live volcanoes radioactive? It seems not.

Things standard lava won't melt : Stainless steel, concrete, already-cooled lava. The temperature of flowing basalt is usually around 1170 degrees C or less. Anything that you find that has a melting point above that will be able to withstand melting.

ECN hooked me up with a side-gig for a website for her boss. That might make for a nice couple of hundred bucks in the next week or two - probably for about 2 or 3 days worth of work over the weekends in my downtime. I can cope with that. I've had quite a dry spell in that department since the grove shut down.

Looking forward to doing a little writing this weekend, too. I'm long out of practice, and I'm due to get back on the wagon again. I've been fooling with a new mystery-type idea, so I'll see how well I can work that up into a few thousand words, give or take.

Moment of Lyric -

Waiting at the station,
waiting for the right moves,
waiting in the basement,
waiting for the right cues,
waiting in a daydream,
waiting in the slipstream

waiting...
waiting in the right bars,
waiting in the right shoes,
waiting in a fast car,
waiting in the airports,

waiting for my airmiles,
waiting in slow motion,
coming through the turnstiles.

And if you ever change your mind,
you know I'm hard to find,
and if you ever need someone...

I'll still be waiting...
Waiting with the orphans, waiting for the bee stings, they tell me that success brings,
waiting in the half light, waiting for your whole life,
waiting for an ideal...a low deal...a no deal, to play your stereotype.
And if you ever find the time,
you know I'm not far behind,
And if you ever need someone...

I'll still be waiting...
just waiting for a friend.
I say it's all right,
It's all right my friend...just waiting.

Thanks in no small part to the monkey chow diaries, I think I've got a good idea on making an effort to eat better, and to help make the world a better place.

My current solution - I'm going to pay matching funds to a foundation for anytime I eat non-grocery items (and I won't be spending much more - cutting purchase of said items in half - so I'll be spending abou tthe same amount). Anything from a vending machine or a restaurant, I'll be earmarking an equal amount of cash for a charity for feeding (or better, teaching to self-feed) someone else who is hungry.

Here is a list of 263 charities that provide food. Though, I might prefer to support organizations that catalyze sustainable changes, like Engineers Without Borders. (The old feed a man a fish versus teach him to fish thing).

If anyone can recommend a good, reputable charity (where money goes to the cause, not executive payroll) that teaches recovery of land / self-sustainable health to people, please let me know.

I'm going to turn my homepage's yahoo ads and the paypal charity tip jar to focus on that aspect of helping others, at least until the First of July (I may extend it past that point, too, if I don't come up with another idea that at least as useful) so, if anyone visiting Newtcam or any other page that has a yahoo ad clicks on it, they can help without spending anything.

Other Projects are Hurricane recovery, Race for Life Cancer Research, and Wigs for Kids - Not to mention the following clickable helpers:

A few sites for positive change - None of them cost a penny but can help to do good works.

The hunger site - free food to the hungry
Breast cancer site - Help to fund free mammograms
Child Health site - Help save young lives for free
Rainforest Site - help to preserve our rainforests
Animal rescue site - Feed an animal in need.

It frequently seems that people want what they cannot have. That's not a problem, until it turns out that the *only* reason they want it is because they can't have it. Very silly, especially when they don't want it anymore once they have it.

Well, Duh, I say to myself. Just be glad that isn't one of my failings... I've got enough on my own.

I really like the song mostly just for the yeah yeahs and the riffs, but here' the lyrics, anyhow.

If you could blow up the world with the flick of a switch
Would you do it?
If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich
Would you do it?
If you could watch everybody work while you just lay on your back
Would you do it?
If you could take all the love without giving any back
Would you do it?
And so we cannot know ourselves or what we'd really do...

With all your power
With all your power
With all your power
What would you do?

If you could make your own money and then give it to everybody
Would you do it?
If you knew all the answers and could give it to the masses
Would you do it?
No no no no no no are you crazy?
It's a very dangerous thing to do exactly what you want
Because you cannot know yourself or what you'd really do

With all your power
With all your power
With all your power

I keep getting hit by the aim bot that starts out with "i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?", usually aim user chewableputty.

An explanation of how the bot works is here.

Check out the google search - it seems to be happening to quite a few people.

The greathatsby bot scans LJ users for AIM screen names then sends two people the same message and relays their replies to each other so each person thinks the other person IMed them out of the blue.

Sort of a new version of the 3-way calling prank. I've gotten pings (even when invisible to aim) maybe once a week for the last 6 weeks. a nifty part of the trick is that it auto translates your im name to the bot name when you're in chat, too. so if you identify yourself as "I'm biglug23" it'll say to the other side "I'm chewableputty".

a way around it is to break it up with spaces or some other character - b'i'g'l'u'g'2'3'

I just updated the geocode location on my journal... it's a lot simpler to do now.

Now I just have to reapply it to Newtcam and my homepage proper.

Maybe if I get bored enough, I'll write a greasemonkey script and submit it to LJ to sort of automate it... but I know they're not too crazy about stuff messing with the console.

There's also a current location field now for updating via the web, but it seems to be unrelated. (Though that one will make carrying my gps around kind of neat for walkabout posts in the future, or location-encoding photos taken)

scottobear: (Default)

Walkabout was fun, but uneventful. I wore a ball cap this time, and it's a good thing... my arms are a lot darker than when I left. I put in just under 10 miles of footwork yesterday, and slept quite well as a result.

Visited another different Thai place nearby for lunch... man, the food was awesome. Bamboo shoot salad served with lime juice, chiles, mint leaves, rice powder and cabbage. Yum woon sen - clear bean thread noodles with browned tofu, chile paste, onions, mushrooms, lemon grass and mint. Tom kah soup - a spicy coconut soy milk concoction with lemon grass, lime leaves and other spices. It was all totally vegan, too! Not one hint of critter in there.

I think that once I confirm my techs are switched over, I'll do some more walkies as well, and hit that Dali exhibit... maybe take myself out for sushi (or as bhk likes to call it, @). [edit - whoops! the museum is closed on Sunday]

"Yeah..even now she sulks like Achilles in his tent. Achilles?...It's the Iliad?...It's Homer?... Read a book!"

Had a moment of feeling a bit like Handy there yesterday. People get very touchy when opinions differ.... The other side got pretty wound up to the point of hostility and hyper-defensiveness over something amazingly trivial, (a difference of opinion - I feel that Micheal Crichton is an anti-science hack writer, who ends stories with explosions rather than more satisfactory conclusions -- She thought "he is awesome".) and it really could only be settled by having a detente called. I have to make a point of just walking away at the first sign of pointlessness. I can agree to disagree, especially with someone I don't have to see every day. I'm glad that nonsense is over now.

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Called CompUSA last night around 4pm, and the voice mail is full. do they not ever check it?

Called the manager, Jackie, and said a tech would call me back once finished with a customer. I requested an eta, and she said "a half hour, tops.

I called back 2 hours later after no call came in. I spoke to Steve, who said that he'll call and find out the problem, and for me to call him at noon tomorrow if I haven't heard back from him yet. Let's see what the excuse is this time.

As assumed, no Danny today, so plan B - walkabout. Treat myself to good times. Chinese Buffet for lunch, maybe CJ's for dinner. Work out. Wander someplace I've never been before. I think I'm going to pass on the spa, unless I stumble across it in my journeys.

They will supposedly be available today. Just passed the 10 week anniversary of getting the power back on at my old apartment, and discovering Big Brain's disability on Tuesday... another week and a half, and it will be an entire quarter year (season, whatnot) since bringing it in.

CompUSA is now equal to Comcast's Broward county service level, which is to say, a hair's breadth from nil.

The compound (not to be confused with a two-stage) rescue-line rocket is a very cool piece of old west [circa 1865] tech. A tethered rocket you could shoot accurately at a ship that was sinking about a mile away and use to reel folks or even the boat to safety is pretty dang awesome, and something I knew nothing about until yesterday. Good day for a trivia upgrade. (They also had combat rockets that could either act as a nasty missile on it's own, too, but not nearly as spiffy as the rescue.) Additionally, angled fins around the thrust putsa spin on the rocket, stabilizing it, and improving accuracy.

They managed to ignite the workshop, and the explosion melted two cameras, the protective shielding and set a hovercraft on fire.

Good quote about patience. "This is one of the dangers, when nothing happens. When nothing happens for a while, everyone is like: 'Well, let's get closer. Let's get closer. Let's get closer.' BOOM! And everyone's dead."

Other recently confirmed side issue - "Bulletproof water" and how poorly the high-powered rifles did. The full metal jacket bullets for the high-powered rifles came apart upon hitting the water and the .50 caliber rifle was only able to penetrate about 3 ft of water.

The first thing that I thought of was "Dang, when I was playing Zero, he didn't have nearly enough Armor!" Zero was a misfit GURPS superhero that was basically intelligent, cohesive water that could skin himself with an animated ice shell to manipulate things. I still have my gaming notes for him and a bunch of other stuff on my bookshelf. Graypumpkin was the GM, and Kat played "Spring", a sort of loony blend of Tigger, the Creeper, and Mysterio.

Still getting a lot of links from that Spidey clip, including a journal from the Netherlands.

GeotargetRS thinks that I have some big secret plans for the weekend, I think because I let her go on about her weekend plans and whatnot, and then we got to talking about something else. Nope, nothing special planned... just sleeping in and lingering around the neighborhood, doing more walkies if I can. No glamorous binges on booze and loose women, just a nice weekend out and about.

FDLE coming by the office on Monday morning, FBI Tuesday, and who knows what Wednesday will bring? Maybe big brain, ha-ha? I'm glad that HP has been as patient with me as possible.

I was so beat last night that I fell asleep at 8:30... woke up at 4ish am as a result. I suspect my weekend might be a little out of whack as a result. A bit too brisk out for a swim in the pool... maybe after the sun rises.

I find it amazing that my electric bill for the new one bedroom is less than my old studio... the old place must've not been very well weather sealed. $70 is almost a third less than what I paid last January. Also, automatic billpay is beautiful. I just get an email a week before it's paid, so I can update my records, and hey, presto!

Laser pointer is nifty in the early morning fog... the line goes on for a huge distance.

Dopey dreams of work last night...I don't much like it when the daily mundane starts stepping on areas that usually allow for people being changed into modular string bean / sabre-toothed tiger stereo components. Most of the drama that I was expecting to happen didn't occur yesterday, so maybe that was why it was pressing on the brain. Next Friday will be considerably different, and I expect the company to have some drastic changes in one way or another by February.

May be getting together with Bro tomorrow, if plans stay on track. I think a beach walk is in order, or maybe a bike trip.

word of the day: fabiform - shaped like a bean

Speaking of words, I never seem to get a good opportunity to use the term "vortex". (not to mention - vortical, vorticose, vorticular or vortiginous) Like kissing a woman's hand, it's either too much, or not enough.

Windows update now has an official security patch for the wmf vulnerability...update your system normally, and you'll no longer need that patch posted earlier. To delete the old patch, go to the control panel, add/remove programs - It will be in the list of installed programs as "Windows WMFMetafile Vulnerability HotFix". click on change/remove, and once it's out, reboot. all done!

Those Yahoo ads are earning about $0.56 a day lately, down from an overall average of about $2.69 a day. (one insane day 12/15 that got nuts threw off the average.. $19.68) .. but most days haven't broken a dollar. Upside, there has only been one day when *nothing* was earned since I started hosting them. That plus the $50 flat I get each month from my static front page linkies every month makes for a nice charity lump sum base.

GeotargetTossed a couple of yahoo ads (like my old google ones) on my homepage and journal location at my website. I've already earned a whopping $.73! They cut a check every $100, so it'll probably be a good few months before I see any funds at this rate. I'm hoping all the spider-sites will click through and bring me some funds.

Have to call up and check on big brain again. I'm beginning to suspect that they're keeping it for all the fun stuff on the HD's.

Didn't hang with anyone last night, just flew solo. No calls from Wendy, Liz or the hippies... walkabout was fun, regardless. Chicken Little was cute, but not worth a matinée... more of a Netflix rental.
