I have been waiting for songbird since I first heard of iTunes. Super-duper reworking of the idea and allows open source.

May be going out with Vicki and the gang to Opa tonight to celebrate her Birthday (it was yesterday) and her new gig at the riverside. Flaming cheese, table dancers and smashed crockery!

Oh and as a public service announcement, the famous resturant across from Quiet Waters Park, Samurai Sal's, has closed down. Who would have thought that a sushi/italian restaurant wouldn't fly? I'm shocked. You'll all have to go elsewhere for your sushi and pizza cravings.

Micro Retro A-Go-Go

Newish games journal Re:Retro reveals that "the world's smallest website," Guimp, has put up more of its adorable tiny clones of vintage arcade games, now including Pong, Pac Man, Asteroids(my personal fave), and Space Invaders.

Each game is boiled down to an 18-pixel square screen, replete with minimal-pixel graphics and clunky sound effects. It's a concentrated dose of nostalgia as well as a design experiment gone horribly well.

FREE PANCAKES! NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

On February 28, 2006 from 7 AM to 2 PM IHOPs across the country will celebrate National Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) by offering our guests a free short stack of pancakes*. This is going to be our biggest one day celebration in our history.

National Pancake Day has a rich history that stretches back centuries and has always been a time of celebration. National Pancake Day always falls on Fat Tuesday and this year it will be a celebration at IHOP.

So gather your friends, family and neighbors and come to your local IHOP and enjoy a short stack of pancakes on us. All we ask is that you consider making a donation to a great charity like First Book or other local, worthy cause. Where else would you celebrate national pancake Day than IHOP? See you there.

* Limit one free short stack per guest. Valid for dine-in only, no to go orders. Not valid with any other offer, special, coupon,or discount. Valid at participating restaurants only, while supplies last.

Have you tried Songbird yet? I like the idea (and the fact that the guy from Winamp, my favorite media player, is connected with it) but I'm a bit leery of it being built on the same platform as Firefox. I haven't had much luck with Firefox. For me, it's been almost as unstable as IE, and I find the way it handles image file downloads incredibly clunky and unreliable. It's one of the main reasons I've stuck with Opera as my default browser.

I've been using it for a coulpe of days, and so far it's been pretty stable, (though it is still in beta)... it pulls mp3s off of webpages nicely for me, and shearche my computer well enough to build playlists for my trusty, rusty old laptop.

Maybe I'll give it a shot then- but probably not until it gets out of Beta. I've had bad luck with too many Beta programs.

On the subject of digital music, this is an interesting opinion piece from Wired News.

sounds like a fair plan to me! Beta testing can be pretty rocky for some.

I tend to agree with her assessment... I think $1 a song seems a little high, but then my brain say s"what the heck, it's just a buck".. and then my hard drive chimes in "but you've got a few thousand songs on here, bub... if you bought all of 'em, that'd be a pretty penny!"

I play life on my pda all the time! there are a lot of nifty resources for it.. in fact, in second life, lj user qdot has a disco flor that acts as a life gameboard for dancers to hoof atop.

I’m a bit confused, what do they mean by open source? Does boil down to getting music for free, without the artist getting paid for his/her work?

not really... open source means that the program (songbird) is written with the code accessable by anyone, to make thier own improvements on it, and less proprietary.

For me, it means I can play a wider variety of music, not just stuff in iTunes format, but a broad assortment, with more features and much more growth potential (You're not locked into the iTunes store, but can get stuff from garage bands or folks that prefer a different type of encodeing or sales. . Song-sellers will still make money.

It's cool that with the code accessible by anyone, not that I would be any good at that but I can benefit from others coding

So you still pay for songs or copy stuff you've already have but you just have a format that's open.

That's it, exactly. plus, since it's open, other stores can sell stuff, too, so the free market ramps up a bit, too.
