Broward County Mass Transit (BCT) will resume service on Saturday, October 29, operating on a Sunday schedule until further notice.

Due to the volume of road debris remaining on many BCT routes, and the number of downed or inoperable traffic signals, riders may experience some unavoidable delays in the schedule.

Full service will resume as soon as possible.

City of Fort Lauderdale Government Offices
All City of Fort Lauderdale offices will be closed for regular business on Friday, October 28, 2005. The City government however, has been fully operational since Monday, October 24, and is continuing to work out of the Emergency Operations Center 24-hours a day.

City Hall will re-open for normal business operations on Monday, October 31, 2005.

Hurricane Debris Drop-off Location
City of Fort Lauderdale residents will be able to drop-off hurricane debris at Florence C. Hardy Park, located at 25 S.W. 9th Street. This location will be open to City residents only from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., seven days a week, beginning on Friday, October, 28, until further notice. Proof of residency in Fort Lauderdale will be required. Valid forms of ID include a current drivers license or a recent City utility bill.

Residents should follow these instructions to reach the hurricane debris drop-off site at Hardy Park: take S. Andrews Avenue to S.W. 9th Street; go West on S.W. 9th Street and follow signs to the drop-off location.





City of Fort Lauderdale Curfew - 11 p.m. - 6 a.m.
A mandatory curfew is in effect for the City of Fort Lauderdale from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice. While the curfew is in effect, all pedestrian and vehicular movement is prohibited. The only exceptions to the curfew are those required to travel in connection with emergency operations related to Hurricane Wilma which include:

Police
Fire/EMS
City/county government representatives with essential duties
Hospital workers
Utility repair workers
Employees travelling to and from their places of employment
The sale and distribution of alcohol is strictly prohibited during curfew hours.





Water Service
The City of Fort Lauderdale has restored water service to approximately 93 percent of its customers. Crews are continuing to work around the clock to restore water service to the remaining parts of the City. As water is restored in the City of Fort Lauderdale, a water boil notice will remain in effect for 48 hours.

Residents should remain alert to any flowing water that may indicate a break in the line. Report any water flow or water main breaks to 954-828-8000.

Until water is fully restored, residents are asked to continue to conserve water.





Boil Water Notice
A boil water notice remains in effect for the City of Fort Lauderdale. When water is fully restored, it is safe for bathing, but should not be consumed or come in contact with the eyes until any impurities flow out of the system. Residents should follow these directions before drinking water or using water for cooking.

Add 8 drops of common bleach to each gallon of water and let the water rest for 30 minutes before consuming

OR

Boil water for 1 minute, let cool before consuming

Please continue to conserve water as much as possible.





Water Chlorination
The City of Fort Lauderdale Public Works Department is temporarily utilizing chlorine in its drinking water treatment system. This preventive maintenance procedure will take place now through midnight, Thursday, November 17, 2005. Chlorination of the water treatment system is conducted twice a year and is a standard practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection.

The temporary use of chlorine is not harmful, but some individuals may notice a slight change in taste or odor in the tap water during this period.

This procedure will affect all City of Fort Lauderdale water customers, as well as the cities of Davie (Old Hacienda Village), Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Oakland Park, Port Everglades Authority, Tamarac, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes and Wilton Manors.

The boil water notice for City of Fort Lauderdale water customers remains in effect until further notice.

Sanitation Services
Recycling services have been suspended until further notice because the private recycling plant has shut down.

City of Fort Lauderdale garbage, bulk trash and yard waste services have resumed and crews are servicing areas where roadways are accessible.

More than 200 trucks and 500 employees are on the streets daily collecting hurricane debris.

Beach Access
Fort Lauderdale beach remains closed until further notice. Access to the beach remains restricted by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Absolutely no "sightseers" or tourists will be allowed beyond the access bridges.

Those entities which will be allowed beach access include:

Emergency, city government and utility repair personnel
Beach residents
Relatives of beach residents
Those with medical emergencies
Beach business owners and essential employees
Home/structure repair workers
Individuals requesting access to the beach will be stopped by police officials and must do one of the following:

Provide proof of residence (such as a drivers license or a utility bill)
Provide a legitimate and verifiable purpose and need for access to the beach
Individuals requesting access to the beach should be prepared to present a valid photo identification to police officers controlling the access to the bridges.





Electricity
FPL has restored power to approximately 169,400 customers in Broward County. Crews continue to work 24 hours a day on main feeders and substations. FPL estimates that power should be restored to the majority of its customers in Broward County by November 8, 2005 and all customers in Broward County should have power restored by November 22, 2005.

If you see a downed power line do not touch it or attempt to move it. Residents should use extreme caution when moving trees, branches and debris as they may be covering downed power lines. Downed power lines should be reported to FPL at 1-800-4-OUTAGE.





Parks and Recreation
Parks and Recreation ground crews have been working since Hurricane Wilma to clear debris from City roads. The City's Parks Department crews have finished clearing all major roadways. Crews continue to clear debris from neighborhood streets.

All Parks and Recreation programs and events have been suspended until further notice.

The Parks and Recreation Halloween event at Stranahan Park has been cancelled.

The Grand Opening of Riverland Park has been postponed until further notice.





Roadways / Traffic Advisory
Due to power outages caused by Hurricane Wilma, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department urges all City residents and visitors to use extreme caution when driving on City roadways. The police department has increased the number of officers on duty to handle issues arising from Hurricane Wilma. The department will operate on elevated staffing levels as long as necessary.

The police department discourages residents from driving on the roads unless it is absolute necessary, as traffic hinders the City's clean-up efforts. Drivers are reminded to use caution and treat all intersections with inoperable traffic lights as four-way stops.




Generator Safety
Generators must be placed outdoors because they emit carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. Do not run a generator indoors and remember to close windows near the generator.





City of Fort Lauderdale Residents Eligible for FEMA Assistance
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has declared Broward County eligible for individual assistance.

Individuals and businesses needing assistance should call the FEMA toll-free Disaster Assistance Hotline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), Applications may also be obtained through FEMA's web site at www.fema.gov.

When you apply for disaster assistance, please have the following available:

Social Security Number
Private insurance information, if available
Address and zip code of the damaged property
Directions to the damaged home or property
Daytime telephone number
For the speech or hearing impaired, call TTY 1-800-462-7585

Disaster recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, economic status or retaliation. If you or some you know has been discriminated against, contact FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362 TTY: 1-800-462-7585. If suspicious of any abuse of FEMA programs, please contact the fraud hotline at 1-800-323-8603.





Operation Blue Roof
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has launched Operation Blue Roof in Broward County.. Operation Blue Roof provides blue plastic sheeting to cover roofs on eligible homes damaged by Hurricane Wilma at no cost to the homeowner.

Only primary residences that have sloped, shingled roofs are eligible to receive a blue roof. Structures with greater than 50% structural damage are not eligible. Tile or slate roofs are not eligible, and mobile homes with aluminum siding only cannot support a blue roof unless substantially reinforced.

A Blue Roof application center has been established at the Winn-Dixie parking lot at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and S.W. 70th Avenue in Plantation. The center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. beginning, Friday, October 28.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does not have tarps available for general distribution.
