Chugging along into work... wondering if Hurricane Earl is going to moisten us for Labor Day weekend. I never really worried too much about typhoons, even when I lived in South Florida. More concerned about the garden than any property damage, though I am wondering a bit about our big ol' tree over the east side of the house. A branch came off back in the ice storm a couple of years back, and that did a number on the love cube... wonder what might happen to the house if a couple hundred pounds of tree-limb if it tapped on the 2nd floor. I'm guessing the new england states have more to worry about than me.

I wonder why they didn't air sharktopus during shark week? Maybe next year. I just thought about a shocktopus... an electrically powered octopus, like an electric eel? sharktopi? shocktopi?

I'm getting used to waking up at 5ish every morning, to get to work by 8... nice that the netbook has a lot of battery power - lets me listen to podcasts / audio books on the road / rail, and type a bit if I'm not all sleepy-wonky. I'm still amazed by the way the city changes station by station... only the homeless population seems constant. People in suits, almost costumed... guys in cowboy hats (and business suits), women wearing African-style garments carrying briefcases... I wonder what Embassy Row is like during rush hour. Scary thought, give then whole discovery of diplomats in DC with slaves a few months back. (I don't have the exact document handy, but a search on Mzengi / Tanzania should bring something up. Hard to forget a name like Mzengi.)

[many hours pass]

Annnd, I'm back on the Metro, heading back home again. No unicorns. Phantom shadows of Michael Jackson, Giant green letters covered with pustules, and it smells more like goats again. I see emo haircuts, lots of earbuds, a pierced nose, bad dye jobs and some glittery pink shoes. Hipster kids abound. Not as many homeless today... possibly too hot to lurk in the direct sunlight during the rush.

Cousin David gave me a copy of Philip K Dick's VALIS trilogy - I'd only read the first book previously, and I'm looking forward to the rest. That sort of fiction was right down my alley, back when I was younger.. I'll be interested to see how much Robert Anton Wilson style philosophy sticks with me upon a reread. I miss some of that grateful dead / david bowie head space these days.

Additionally, Amy and BHK got me a sheep-shearing Lego game, and the guys at the lego store used the power of touch along with psychic ability to get me 3 minifigs - a mariachi guy, a mime with 3 heads, and an awesome green witch.

Another day down... long weekend looms ahead, though Saturday is possibly an indy consult day for the chinese food place. card readers and printer setups.

At Anacostia station now. 6:15pm traveling to the Suitland station - I am thankful for the cool climate inside the train. I was fit to melt at fort totten.

Arrival @ suitland - 6:25. ack hot.

Lots going on this week. Lets see...

  • Amy Arrived during the weekend, and will be off on the coming Sunday - Allowed me to give BHK a birthday gift early - Lego Harry Potter for the Wii.
  • First Day of new gig on Monday. I worked pretty late, and it was a mixed bag. I am enjoying it quite a bit overall.
  • Funeral for Ch'Naca Chris on Tuesday. BHK attended, though I could not due to the gig. Chinese Food for dinner, consolation prize for not being able to go to Laughing Buddha for dinner on Birthday Wednesday.
  • Physically ill yesterday morning - Gut was very unhappy. Severe cramps, dry heaving. Pain has mostly abated, but still sore in the belly, arms and chest.
  • Call from my first paying client - needs me to set up her restaurant system - possibly for Saturday. I will try to aim for a week from then, just so I can spend some time with our guests. - timing seems off.
  • It was BHK's birthday last night. I made her a card and a heart out of craft-clay, and she got the earrings we got on our last road trip.
  • Cousin David arrived with his parents, to visit before he journeys off to Hungary on Saturday. His parents left last night, I think.

Not much to say - I'll part on ripple.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
    Perhaps they're better left unsung.
    I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

    Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
    Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

    Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
    Nor wind to blow.

But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

Cousin David met BHK and I at the Suitland Station and we whisked off to the in-laws for Chinese food and an animated discussion on what David is up yo lately (his Hungarian girlfriend, school, etc etc)

Blueberry Pancakes for breakfast! A good sized crew was here earlier, David, Larry, Chris, BHK and I all scarfed down tasty flapjacks... Before that David and I played a little lego star wars on the Wii while BHK prepped in the kitchen.

After Breakfast, BHK busted out the a sailing ships and seafaring puzzle, to work on while David and I finished out game... after he headed out, Larry and Chris high-tailed it... so BHK and I were left with about 994 pieces of the 1000 bit puzzle to put together.

I took a little break midday to rest my back, as it was still pretty sore, but got up at about 4 to have some late snacks (too late for a full blown lunch), and watched the soup, some eddie izzard, and we went back to the ol' puzzle. More Izzard in the background while we sorted pieces and just had some nice family time.

I'd say we got about 90% of the puzzle done before I started to really ache again... we rested in the living room and caught up with a little more tv, and now it's time for bed. Hot showers and heating pads seem to help the most. Larry and Chris never came by to have supper with us, but Larry did drop off leftover chinese food... BHK did Beans and rice, while I had tofu and broccoli.

March Begins! David spent Friday night at his pal in DC's place, but returned to us this morning... after my shots, we headed out to the Museum of Visionary art w/ BHK and David, and then to Edgar Allan Poe's burial site (and his 13 year old at wedding-time cousin-wife ) at Westminster (little known factoid, BHK was the tour guide to the Poe site, and has keys to the crypt there.)

Most of what was done and seen can be expressed in photos... sadly, you're not supposed to take pics inside. ( I did sneak one with the camera phone , however.) clicking on items below will go to larger images. No ghosts captured at the graveyard, but I had fun doing some more stitching.

My favorite bit was probably the giant bird, nest and mirrored egg outside the museum. The egg glittered like an 8 foot tall disco ball in the setting sun.

To be honest, the interfaith art exhibit didn't do a lot for me... I was more interested in the permanent items, including the kinetic sculptures art cars, and painted screens.

Guy in the green hoodie is David, BHK's cousin - I think he had a nice time with us. BHK managed to dodge my best efforts at capturing her candidly.

Chinese food tonight! Yum, and Hooray!

BHK and David went to the thrift store today - brought home some treasures :

She got me a comic book of Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham's first appearance in Marvel Tales (Tails). I actually dug Steve Mellor's art in Goose Rider and the cover even more than the main story.

A black embroidered shirt, and a yellow sweatshirt, both in excellent condition.

Also picked up a pretty broad assortment of books - to be cataloged later.

    Also, squid shake.

    Cancel that.

After Din-din, we jammed a bit - David on acoustic guitar, Larry on mandolin, and me on the bass. It was fun, but I was full of food and very sleepy, so we cut it pretty short.

The DORmino concept uses an oversized mousepad to soak up the bleedout warmth of a laptop, which embedded electronics convert and transmit to power a wireless mouse. No need to recharge, no dead batteries to pollute the environment.

I need something like that to charge my electronics, based on the warmth I throw off... If I can knock out a baby or a small animal with my temperature, surely the therms could keep my blackberry and digicam juiced up for when I want to use em! How handy would that be for other stuff... a trickle charger in the sofa to keep the remote powered!

    I'm just saying.

Looks like the one over-enthusiastic and socially frustrated gamer-type on the icehouse mail list is taking an indefinite leave of absence. I wonder what it'll be like with a better signal-to-noise ratio ? Half the reason I lost interest in pyramid games and participation on the list was due to that guy... maybe the group will get back into friendly design mode rather than debates about wiki formatting and award shows.

Note to self - make a ghost statue.

Pretty keen - Microwave glucose sensor.

For diabetics, the daily routine of pricking their finger to check blood-sugar levels can be an annoying and inconvenient task. But now, a Baylor University researcher has developed an electromagnetic sensor that could provide diabetics a noninvasive alternative to reading their blood glucose levels, and new research shows the sensor works and is effective.
