Installed new Nvidia drivers (9/2/05 ones) and my system is looking *great*. Second life at a higher resolution and less crash issues. I'm going to reinstall farcry, and see how that does, next.

The higher res desktop frees a lot of real estate up, too. I'm impressed.. it's like I've got a new system. 1280 x 1024 x 2 monitors (so it's actually 1280 x 2048, if you want to get technical) it makes it pretty hard to revert to the 1024 x 768 single screen at work.

"We're gonna find our father, but between everything here and there, we're going to kill everything bad."

I heard that quote played in the background while I was reading stuff online. The show was Supernatural but I thought about how keen it would be if these two were just delusional murderers raised by some psycho who got trotted off to jail. I flashed to the "monster hunters" are killing innocent people who were impeding there progress in recovering their father from some institution.... the show, instead of being another "Project Bluebook/X-files/Chill Game" type gig could instead be the insane POV of a pair of guys sublimating homicidal activities with some severe schizo hallucinations. Two guys traveling around leaving a trail of bodies in their wake, blaming invisible "monsters" nobody's ever seen. The FBI is going to take 'em down, and soon.

That said, I actually kind of like Supernatural for what it actually is... yet another bogey-hunter show.

This site aims to make it easy for anyone to quickly find sex offenders in a graphical way. Many of the state registries fulfill the purpose of making the data freely accessible, however it can be difficult and time-consuming to determine just how many live near you, and how close they are. This site plots the sex offenders on a map so you can instantly see how many and where they are.

Fellow Americans, if you haven't yet registered to vote, or need to re-register due to a change of address or legal name, please go here:

http://moveonpac.org/vote/

Online form. Takes all of two minutes, if that. Seriously.

Print it, sign it, slap a stamp on it (and maybe a piece of tape) and you're good to go. You don't even need an envelope.

Do it right now, if you can. Many states have early October deadlines to register. That's just two weeks away.

If you're not sure whether or not you're registered, you're probably not. Register again.

I don't care whether we're voting for the same guy or not.

Just register and vote, k?

It ain't a right, it's a responsibility.

Thanks.

Also, For people without printers: 7-11 stores are carrying piles of voter registration forms.

American citizens overseas who need to request absentee ballots can get information on how to do that (including the standard federal form to request them) at http://www.fvap.gov/ - that site will point you to state election sites for voters in the US.

Broward PSA

All Broward County Public Schools will remain CLOSED Tuesday, September 7, 2004 as restoration efforts from Hurricane Frances continue. Students, teachers and other school-based instructional staff should NOT report to the schools. Principals and Assistant Principals should report to their respective schools.

District offices and facilities WILL reopen tomorrow. All full-time District employees, including administrative and supervisory, clerical, maintenance and facility service employees should report to their normal work locations. All food service employees should report to their respective work locations as well.

The decision was made to keep the schools and offices closed for another day because of the power outages that persist at several dozen District schools, along with potential hazards to children presented by downed power lines, busy intersections where traffic signals are not operating due to power outages and storm debris that may prompt children to walk in the street to school and bus stops. There is also a concern with the ongoing restoration efforts involving the use of chainsaws and heavy vehicles to cut up and haul away downed trees and branches, as well as the major operation by Florida Power & Light Company to restore electricity to the area.

An additional issue involves scattered sewage and water disruptions throughout the county as the result of power outages. Pumping stations and sewage treatment facilities have been impacted, causing some sewage backups, sporadic water service and boil water orders.

Students, parents and District employees should monitor the District’s Web site at browardschools.com, call the District’s Rumor Control Hotline at 754-321-0321 or monitor local media for updated information regarding the status of the schools.

Turn Gmail storage into a mountable file system

GmailFS provides a mountable Linux file system which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland file system infrastructure to help provide the file system, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favorite Unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

Instructions on how to remove Mysearch, aka Mywebsearch, My Search Bar, My Way Speedbar:
To uninstall Mysearch first close all open browser windows. Then click 'Start' menu, then select 'Control Panel' and open the 'Add/Remove Programs' option. Find "My Search Bar" in the list of programs, and click 'Change/Remove' and follow the prompts to remove them. Other components to look for and remove are:

My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
Search Assistant - My Way
My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)

This procedure should completely remove Mysearch. If you have any problems or to be certain all its components have been removed, scan your system with an adware removal utility.

Ugh... either there's a problem with my crossover cable or the plug. I can't keep the network connection between lappie and big brain open and smooth. I don't know if it's the cable or the connection. I suspect hardware rather than software.

Picking up a fresh cable tomorrow, and hopefully that'll take care of that issue.

I'm not a little tired of dealing with the computer.. ready for another year-long rest.

I need to write my brother a letter tonight. Have to kick myself in the keister to get that out before the mail at 2pm tomorrow.
