scottobear: (2 - crabs for christmas)
Tomorrow is the Christmas party at work. I wonder what the following week before vacation is going to be like? I suspect it'll mostly be business as usual.

Got BHK David DeBoy's Crabs for Christmas CD... gave it to her early... as a cd of christmas music on christmas day has a very limited shelf-life. (At least until next year) She was more than delighted - it really is pretty much "Our" holiday song, after all.

The other songs on the CD are pretty groovy, too. I was a little worried it might be a lot of filler, but the tunes are a lot of fun - especially if you're a Marylander.

Found out how to add everyone on my lj friends page to an rss reader directly... That's pretty dang handy.

Also, drawings of Bears in Ill-fitting hats.

via dcwmata -
"By an overwhelming majority Metro board members approved today the largest increases in subway fares and parking fees in the agency's history after months of contentious debate among directors...

"The board members essentially approved a plan offered in recent days by Maryland members that lessens the impact on suburban and long-distance riders. That plan followed a public hearing that drew more than 400 comments from riders, many of whom said that proposed fare and fee hikes were too high and not merited by metro's unreliable service."

A year away from ACIM. Who'd have thought it? Good to have moved on, though I'm very proud of the good I accomplished while I was there.

I'm so thankful that I'm here now... I have a loving family, some nice local friends, a good job... let alone the default things like a roof over my head, regular feedings and the ability to read!

To hear BHK and me gobbling, listen to last year's holiday entry.

Ze has a good talk about thanks, from a year ago.

Off to the in-laws with BHK... she prepared a quorn "turkey" roast, veggies, cake, stuffing, and all manner of goodness. I don't know how it could possibly beat the shepherds pie she made for me last night, but if anyone can do it, she can. I'm truly blessed to be married to such a warm, loving, beautiful, brilliant woman who can cook, too!

Just because someone isn't on my "friends list" here on LJ, it doesn't mean I'm not reading other ones... I wonder why folks are so surprised when I comment on something that they wrote and I don't auto link them? There are a lot of reasons not to... maybe I don't want them reading my "friend's only" posts... or maybe they write so often that it floods out my aggregator. Or Maybe I'm just nosy, and want to peek in on random people from time to time, rather than every day.

meme from talonvaki

1. When you looked at yourself in the mirror today, what was the first thing you thought?
"Teeth are cool... I wonder how you'd replace them with Gemstones, like in Miracleman's Adrian Cream"

2. How much cash do you have on you?
Very little. Maybe $.045? I'm overdue to hit the ol' ATM

3. What's a word that rhymes with "DOOR?"
Score!

4. Favorite planet?
Earth works best for me... excluding the obvious, I like Uranus, because it has a sideways axis, rings, and is a childish word-joke for some folks.

5. Who is the 4th person on your missed call list on your cell phone?
Larry, about a week ago. Probably trying to call me re:dinner plans.

6. What is your favorite ring on your phone?
one sounds a bit like dance of the sugarplum fairy... gentle, but so quiet I can hardly hear it.

7. What shirt are you wearing?
Green longsleeved button-down

8. Do you "label" yourself?
Why do I see finger-quotes on this one? I tend to label myself as the helper-guy or the nice guy.

9. Name the brand of your shoes you're currently wearing?
Crocs, baby. closest thing to barefoot, these days.

10. Bright or Dark Room?
I prefer a room that's pretty shaded, unless I'm trying to read.

11. What do you think about the person who took this survey before you?
We have pretty divergent interests - makes for interesting reading. Never really met her.

13. What were you doing at midnight last night?
ZZzzZZZzzz.

14. What did your last text message you received on your cell say?
BHK letting me know she's out front, so I can pick up the cake for work!

15. Where is your nearest 7-11?
A 10 minute drive from here. There's a little unaffiliated convenience store about 5 or so blocks away, though.

16. What's a word that you say a lot?
Cheers!

17.Who told you he/she loved you last?
BHK!

18. Last furry thing you touched?
Pye... or maybe Newt. Does my goatee count?

19. How many drugs have you done in the last three days?
Caffiene and vitamins are about the only drug-like substances entering my system, short of perscriptions

20. How many rolls of film do you need developed?
I have a few pictures on cd/hd that would be pretty printed out... but no film.

21. Favorite age you have been so far?
Hmm... I liked myself most physically at about 21. I rather like where I am mentally and socially, now.

22. Worst enemy?
I don't have any active enemies, that I know of.

23. What is your current desktop picture?
BHK at St. Aug on our honeymoon.

24. What was the last thing you said to someone?
I love you - to BHK.

25. If you had to choose between a million bucks or to be able to fly what would it be?
Fly... how? Like superman, effortlessly? On the surface... I'd take flight. If I lived in the "real world", I'd fear all kinds of crazy scientists and the like trying to track me down and dissect me for my secret... if that's the case, I'll take the cash.

26. Do you like someone?
Sure, I like lots of people.

27. The last song you listened to?
Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie

The fog this morning was insane. View from my office looked like the windows were frosted.

BHK's falafel tonight hit just the right spot!

Test of blog2blog worked well... I copied all of the public entries over to my alternate wordpress site, in case of lj collapse. (Not like that's going to happen, but it's nice to have an archive.) I'll still continue to post here, but I think I'll do periodic slides over to the other location, to keep the backups fresh.

It took a long time to move 9000+ articles over, but not as long as I'd thought. Downside is that it doesn't take comments or tags with it, but the internal search engine at WP is pretty darn solid. Added bonus, the comment and page tracking is a lot more up to snuff. Note - Save your entries on a file locally... makes it a lot easier to catch up if something happens mid-process. Voice posts, lj-embeds and lj-polls also don't travel well, for obvious reasons.

The Ghost of Foghorn Leghorn Speaks of Unrequited Love

I said, listen to me, boy. Only the stars know.
And now you, fidgeting in all the air
like you fear for your neck. Still,
you're young and youth explains away all,
except love. My love. I've a gift
but not for this. It speaks like a house fire.

Or a bullet into a bowl of oatmeal. If fired,
you've got a mess. And I do, I know,
and not one I thought I wanted, like a gift.
Stay with me, son. I'm not wasting air
for your benefit alone. I said, that's all,
and walked off, shaking. It's hard to be still.

It's hard to know how to be still.
When I was little I felt I'd catch fire
if I was too quiet. Nothing's changed at all.
There's nothing worse than to know
my smoke signals go unheeded in the air—
she won't look, speak, accept the gift

I made for her. Her going is my gift.
All that I'll keep. Out to an old still
I'd go and drink until I forget it's air
I need to live, air that fills me now like fire
nothing can douse. For all I know,
the ground beneath me is burned beyond all

knowing. Any of this getting through all
that thick head, boy? Love isn't a gift.
Way off, you're way off. I know
you hope it's feathers flying and time stood still,
crowing from the roof, and gun-fire
meant to silence your song on the night air.

You're not listening. That's just hot air.
It's torture. You're finished, once and for all.
You might as well be old rags in a fire.
I'll say it again: love wasn't a gift
when I fell flat and hard upon it, and still,
I won't dare let it go. It's all I know—

like the air or the sound of my voice, my gift,
all bluster and not a bit of it still.
This fire could burn me alive. Who'd know?

I've been thinking about the polar bear swim on new year's day already... I suspect strongly that I'll do it again. I really need to schedule some workout time... I've been just flopping onto couch when I get home... stretching and strength-building is a real must. Perhaps a specific time to do so would work for the best.... 8pm, probably. After supper, but well before bedski. Not tonight though - took Chris out with us to Mexico for supper. Churro-yum!

Temperature this morning was right at freezing... the dew on the grass was frozen, and gave a very satisfying crunch when trod upon. I like the look of flora with a white icy highlight.

Contrails in the sky this morning were so plentiful, I feared it was a missile attack for a split second. There must've been two or three dozen crisscrossed white streaks in the sky.. it seemed unreal.

The TV grid -- which shows will have episodes until when, because of the writers' strike.

The networks had estimated that a backlog of finished scripts and completed episodes would keep many series on the air until early 2008. But with numerous show runners refusing to supervise non writing services on their programs -- duties that include overseeing casting, editing and directing -- production has stopped on several leading series and new episodes of a number of shows will vanish around Thanksgiving. 'Second Earth' found, 20 light years away

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky "second Earth" circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.

The planet is the most Earth-like ever spotted and is thought to have perfect conditions for water, an essential ingredient for life. Researchers detected the planet orbiting one of Earth's nearest stars, a cool red dwarf called Gliese 581, 20 light years away in the constellation of Libra.

Measurements of the planet's celestial path suggest it is 1½ times the size of our home planet, and orbits close to its sun, with a year of just 13 days. The planet's orbit brings it 14 times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun. But Gliese 581 burns at only 3,000C, half the temperature of our own sun, making conditions on the planet comfortable for life, with average ground temperatures estimated at 0 to 40C. Researchers claim the planet is likely to have an atmosphere. The discovery follows a three-year search for habitable planets by the European Southern Observatory at La Silla in Chile.

I'm rather surprised that you have to pay Wii points to get the internet channel, (it was free until the end of June 2007, while in beta) but you get news and weather for free. I am sort of digging everybody votes - and that was free, too. The browser will probably be the first thing I drop points on... not like I really need it, with I don't know how many connective devices in the house. PDA, PSP, X number of laptops, and Big Brain.

Contrary to my original belief, the points aren't given as rewards for doing well, but can only be purchased. Pfth.

I'll be interested to see what Newtcam and my LJ reading list looks like on the big tv.

BHK got Wii Play (good excuse to get another wii remote, and I'm a sucker for minigames - see Wario) - a lot of fun. I like the billiards game the most.

I suspect that our next few Wii purchases will be one or two of the following:

Rest in Peace, Dani.

We'll play Big Rock Candy Mountain for you here. She first popped into my journal just shy of 7 years back. She was one of the good ones - I'll miss her.

An example of why.

News article about her - Hemet driver killed when car rolls over

A 27-year-old Hemet woman was killed when the car she was driving on Gilman Springs Road left the roadway and rolled over, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash caused massive head injuries and was ejected, said CHP spokesman Chris Blondon.

Several farmworkers discovered the wrecked 1999 Ford Taurus just before 10 a.m. Thursday in a field about 190 feet off Gilman Springs Road, just east of Bridge Street, Blondon said. It appears the accident occurred the night before, Blondon said, but the wreckage could not be seen from the roadway.

The name of the driver is being withheld until her relatives are notified.

Blondon said it appears the woman was traveling east on Gilman and lost control of the car as she tried to negotiate a curve. The vehicle smashed through a chain-link fence and rolled over. Blondon said the driver was partially ejected and sustained massive head injuries as the car rolled again. The woman was ejected from the vehicle as it continued to roll over, Blondon said.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Blondon said.

OK, enough of this mess - I've gone to the doctor - the muscle aches have mercifully abated, but it's even harder to constrict my throat than before... head is pounding, and I've been laying down so much that my back was starting to really hurt. Now I'm on Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day for a week... that should slap this bug on the butt.

9/27-11/8
BHK picked up our pottery! Her mug is amazing... I must put pictures up of how it turned out - the green and purple tones are perfect. I'm also very pleased at how well my little volcano board / icehouse stash box turned out, too! The colors got a lot more vivid, post-firing.

On the way home, spied a new neighborhood kitten - maybe 2-3 weeks old... the mama was right around the side of the house, but it took all my might (in my already weakened state) to say no to a pickup of a little black and white tuxedo before we spotted her.

Today is my Brother's 35th birthday. We're sending him a copy of Fluke, which I think that he'll enjoy quite a bit. I wanted to send him some pin-up type goodies too, but that may or may not get his whole shipment confiscated.

Watched the season Premieres of My Name is Earl, Ugly Betty and The Office. Also watcher the mockumentary Werner Herzog - Incident at Loch Ness... not so great.

Also saw the Bionic Woman... I have a long-time fondness for the old one, and this new one by comparison was pretty weak.

Personal Biases against -
  • I don't like nanobots as a plot device. Boring.
  • Too much pseudo-Matrix type combat
  • Terrible dialogue
  • inclusion of obligatory hacker-character
  • "Pleasantly goofy" factor is gone

Possible Pluses -
  • I like the "Prototype Bionic Loon" part
  • Maybe Bigfoot? Unlikely.
  • No Lee Majors Crossovers. Probably. Though I'd be for it if he wore a red track suit and a cheesy 70s moustache.

I'm pretty impressed with LJ's new snapshot link (Third part of this entry ) - it works especially well with wikipedia links. Interesting that you can see "similar searches" ... not sure where current hurricane conditions in the Atlantic have to do with hello kitty, but who can say why a person clicks somewhere? It works especially well with art/scan communities that post links for dial-up folks... just hover and peek - spares a lot of lj-cut effort.

Hm, approaching 9000 entries. How many days has this thing been active? Let's ask date and time.

From and including: Friday, May 19, 2000

To and including: Thursday, September 13, 2007

It is 2674 days from the start date to the end date, end date included

Or 7 years, 3 months, 26 days including the end date.

So, I'm still catching up to the old many quick posts a day to the newer, usually one-post per day. I still have an average of what... about three and a third posts a day if I take the whole into account?

Shopped for b'day presents tonight - we have gift cards from B&N, and we use 'em! We got our reward of a choco-chip cookie or two to take the shopping edge off, but zonked out as soon as we got home. I got to feeling a bit creaky near the end of our expedition... I really need to change out of work shoes once I've left work.

Ate at DuClaw and had the Brew sampler (You get a 4 oz taste of all the beers that they have on tap at that time.)- not bad! I rather liked a few of the microbrews, and getting an a lot of soft-pretzel related meal items made it quite the little pseudo-bavarian event. Twisted Kilt wasn't my fave, though BHK liked it - I think I was more partial to the BA Blonde Ale or the Misfit Red ale. The Crab dip was a bit spicy.

Hm, Discovered the DC Game Night lj community (also Chez_turtle) . Possibly a go for Sunday side of our walkabout weekend? (since we have Monday off.) - Then again, there's always TCEP14. There's a schedule online now, too. I suspect that I'd prefer the informal local game night to a con, but who knows? I figure that I'd prefer a more casual setting with an informal group.

Anyone that developed vegan Cupcakes of Catan is ok in my book.

Of course, there's the Rennfest, too.

Good grief! So many possibilities.

Maybe I'll work a bit on Guitar / Uke skills while BHK is off with TM whenever they decide to head out. I guess that there's a tentative thought about them going to Delaware. What's to do in Delaware?

Editing the icehousegames.org wiki and the lab rabbit wiki has introduced me to an interesting assortment of people... some seem very laid back, others aggressive to the point of being interpreted as hostile. There are some impatient and controlling types in every bunch... sometimes that's what it takes to get things done, I suppose. Not my style, but I can see where it would be a winning tactic on a wiki. Both are pretty solid resources.

(I've even gone so far as to create a lj-feed of recent changes on the rabbit site so that I can track it on my lj, rather than having to log in and sniff around somewhere else. I've just now done the same to the icehousegames wiki too)

Hm... some more good reviews on the DC to NYC bus - I wonder how much cheaper it is than the speedy-train?

BHK talked to PG county's Sheriff's Internal Affairs about the car chase a little while back. I'll be interested to see what comes of it - I only wish I would've been home with her at the time.

Treat from BHK! Yum. Tastes great,
looks far too brown for human consumption.

Found out yesterday that someone I used to know very well is very deep in debt. I wonder what happened? I probably really don't want to know.

We haven't seen Louise for a month... I wonder where she's been?

Flying_blind has a better entry about the ljopoly board and a lot of the recent drama - than I would make, so here's a link.

I'm backing up my LJ pretty much once a week, just so I have a copy for when either inclination or necessity require me to put my stuff either on my own website, or transfer it to a different one. I suspect that neither will happen too soon, but it's probably going to take place eventually.

Cruel 2 B Kind is a game of benevolent assassination.

At the beginning of the game, you and a partner-in-crime are assigned a secret weapon. To onlookers, it will seem like a random act of kindness. But to a select group of other players, the seemingly benevolent gesture is a deadly maneuver that will bring them to their knees.

Some players will be slain by a serenade. Others will be killed by a compliment. You and your partner might be taken down by an innocent group cheer.

You will be given no information about your targets. No name, no photo, nothing but the guarantee that they will remain within the outdoor game boundaries during the designated playing time. Anyone you encounter could be your target. The only way to find out is to attack them with your secret weapon.

Watch out: The hunter is also the hunted. At the beginning of the game, you and your partner will also be assigned your own secret weakness. Other pairs of players have been given your secret weakness as their secret weapon, and they're coming to get you. Anything out of the ordinary you do to assassinate YOUR targets may reveal your own secret identity to the other players who want you dead.

FRIENDSHIP AMNESTY DAY

This Friday is the day.

The idea is to post a public post on Friday with the words "Friendship Amnesty Day" in the title. The reasoning behind it is that we've all had friendships that either blew up, or faded away, and this is a chance, providing everyone is willing to participate, to leave the door open to clear the air and let go of the past.

It doesn't mean adding everyone you ever knew back, but it does mean getting rid of any bad feelings / regrets, and spreading a little good cheer around the LJ 'verse. The creator means livejournal, but I'm going to extend it across the borders of the internet and beyond. There's nothing wrong with the concept in any media.

I finished yesterday's entry and forgot to mention that we had a yummy dinner of grape nuts, toast and honey (or jam for BHK), and corn on the cob while we watched Good Eats, Ace of Cakes, and the first 10 minutes of our as yet unwatched last two episodes of Dresden Files. It sounds odd, I guess, but it worked, and gave me quite a happily full tummy. We tucked in for sleeps right about 10:30.

Tonight's Supper was SUPER YUMMO! Chicken-fried tofu, pearl and honey corn on the cob, kraft dinner mac and cheese, fresh rolls, home-made pickles, smoky black-eyed peas (field peas?) with snap beans in 'em, and finished with a special edition elvis banana & peanut butter reeses cup!

I feel sooooo full. And southern. my tummy is happy.

Ameliarose reminded me to check out artomat - there's a machine nearby that I want to check out. Perhaps that's another road trip with BHK - hit a few of 'em?

Discovered Scribd today, while searching for some solid online documentation. Side effect was locating a number of copies of The Shadow, by Maxwell Grant, and old Dragon Magazines. Nice aspects are that you can download 'em as pdf, word, or plain text for off site use, or embed 'em on the web, much like a Google video. There has got to be some sort of copyright issues going on, but I'm not sure what / where they begin and end.

Project Gutenberg has a large number of stories free of copyright issues. I got to talking to graypumpkin about gaming and my living in the DC area now, and I got to thinking that a Colonial times / Horror / Illuminati-type game would be fun... maybe a prequel to National Treasure and it's coming sequel ? Maybe I can put this book of Freemason symbolism to use... or at least another reason to visit the George Washington Masonic National Memorial.

Netforum 2006/01 or /02? Upgrade is looking pretty essential. That's been part of my work lately, reviewing the next build and how well it'll get into place. I just want it to be as seamless as possible... minimise any growing pains.

Being a giant guy has the side effect of being used as a mobile landmark. I've had folks tell their kids that if the get lost, look for me in a crowd. Not for me to babysit 'em, just that my head and shoulders tend to bob above other folks nearby. Also, it appears that I'm one of those "hey, I know you" types. I look both kind and trustworthy as well as looming and scary. I guess it depends on if I've shaved around the goatee and am more awake than walking dead. (In that case, folks cross the street to get away from me.) I've been in Maryland for about eight months now, and my newest gig just one. I've already been invited to a lot of picnics, parties, etc.... I don't think it'll be too long before the combination of North Beach's small-townishness and other friendlies at work spirals it back up to a broader friends base. Right now I'm still a bit of "BHK's Hubby" or "Larry's Son-in-law".

Back in the old days (when I was in high school and thereabouts) I was Mr. connected. Everyone knew me, or knew of me through someone else. I'm not sure how that happened, but I suspect it's a side effect of the landmark issue above. I seldom bothered anyone, and folks rarely gave me any guff. I'm not as connected anymore - living in a new state, new job, etc. This came up during a little message exchange with Sirenity... regarding people who get talked to or "hey do I know you"ed a lot.

Dreamt of a white panel van with the word destruction on it. - BHK and I were hunting down somebody who sold us a faulty bed. We were pretty mad.... I wonder what we were going to do once we got the guy? That has no relation to the sailboat dream where all we had to eat was trader joes snacks that had gone stale. We were trapped on a catamaran with a big bag of stale crisps and candy-coated sunflower seeds... and no clean water.

Picked up a pair of new shirts, and two new ties. I never thought I'd ever own a purple shirt I could wear to work. I *really* never thought I'd ever wear a tie to work. Who knew? I actually enjoy putting on a corporate noose every here and again, even though it's not required wear in the office. It makes me feel a bit more professional and has the sense of a "uniform" to keep me a bit more focused on my tasks.

Sting from the Macaroni Grill wasp has completely faded.. .it really didn't feel like a sting so much as a very brief electrical shock followed by swelling.

Chore Wars lets you claim experience points for household chores. By getting a few people in your house or workplace to sign up, you can assign experience point rewards to individual chores, and see how quickly each of you levels up. Experience points are tracked both as weekly high-score charts, and as ongoing character sheets - every time you rack up 200XP of chores, your character gains a “level”, and their class changes to match the type of chores that they’ve been doing. (here's my character, if you want to invite me to your party )

Long, hot day at the courthouse. The UPS set up in #3 was like working in a kiln.

Shaved ice of the day – BHK got “Darth Vader / sugar free cherry mix”. I think the black syrup is just black cherry. BHK’s big fear was that it’d be licorice. (Thank goodness for samples!) – I got the Mudslide, and it was good, but not my absolute fave… I suspect that I’ll hit something more fruity / citrus in the future.

Went to Adam & Jimmy’s Graduation with BHK and TM (met the inlaws there). It was a rather dull proceeding, but I’m glad to have attended. The opening speeches were varied, and I was impressed by the Valedictorian’s address. (A much better speaker than the principal or any of the others)

I keep getting little nudges to try twitter, but I can’t seem to find the oomph to roll into it. Maybe I’ll set up a little window on my homepage or somewhere that just runs with it.

Speaking of email nudges, more and more porn spam on my lj. I think that I’ve reported about 3 dozen in the last week or so. I suppose that the big censorship screw up ( see latest news entry - http://news.livejournal.com/99159.html ) will cause the pendulum to swing in the other direction for a bit, and make it more difficult to stop actual spam advertisers. No biggie… all anony-comments are screened for my approval anyhow.

I was surprised a bit by flying blind’s entry (http://flying-blind.livejournal.com/1075154.html) , as I’d not heard anything about it on lj dev, business or other arenas beforehand. Maybe it’s time to host my own journal on my own domain? I’ve got all my old entries and even comments archived, and it wouldn’t be too dear to migrate them over to scottobear.com . The only functionality would be the huge amount of bandwidth that some of the links generate might make me have to step up my allotment.

The concert last night was excellent – set design and lighting was pretty dang sharp, too. Apparently, this is her first new stuff in a bout a decade. Unlike SNZ, she still seemed on top of her game, and her vocals were quite strong. The only rough patch was that it was fairly tight seating for my gargantuan form; fortunately, there was ample space in the side area where we slid over. Interesting elements in her program – debunking an unauthorized biography and showing a little history of people’s right to privacy vs. celebrity. We got out at just a hair before 11pm – DC really is a “commuter city” – It becomes a bit of a ghost town after business hours are up. There aren’t any apartments or anything in the region…, just businesses, maybe a pub or two, and a broad collection of homeless resting on steam grates hither and yon. The homeless in DC are different than downtown Broward – no begging or direct approach. I’m really thankful for the gps in the cell phone for navigating downtown (and BHK for doing the driving… it’s not as bad as downtown Miami , but it’s close.)

Wide Variety of apparel at the concert last night – from dudes in kilts to gypsy girls, to yuppie-types in suit and tie to casual looks.

Saw a car with a DC plate – “TAINT” which made me giggle.

We didn’t eat all night, so at about 11:30, we did a baked potato and frosty side-run on the route home.

New help desk person starts on 5/21 – There’ll still be a slot open, but I figure RD will take up the slack in that department. That tells me that I must really renew my efforts for continued employment both here and/or elsewhere.

Sleepy today – post concert wasn’t that late, but I think we tucked in right at about 12:30. Good solid night’s sleep, tapped snooze three times, despite waking up about 15 seconds before the first alarm hit.

Apparently, Comcast out here doesn't like livejournal's dns... and flickr's...and yahoo... and a bunch of job-seeking sites. so much for getting work or play done online! I was able to do a few things through anonymous proxies online, but I'm not putting my passwords through there.

On 04/18/2007 between the hours of 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, the Town of North Beach experienced a sewerage discharged from Man Hole # 33 located on Bay Ave between 5th St. and 7th St.  In a 3-hour period an estimated amount of 180 gallons of sewerage discharged overflowed from the manhole into the Chesapeake Bay via the storm drain located next to the manhole.  The affected surface area was blocked off and cleaned. The cause was a blockage in the down stream main line located on 5th St.BTW Bay Ave and R261.  This section of line has a belly or depression and has frequently been a problem in the past. The line was jetted and cleared of blockage and is operational.

There has been non-stop work today. If it isn’t actual duties, the phones haven’t stopped ringing.

Random Factoid – the first deer that RD ever shot was a hermaphrodite. Apparently, that’s not too unusual, given how incestuous those guy/gal critters are.

Dreamt last night that I was telling folks about BHK taking the bar exam, and *everyone* was giving back a lame joke of “how hard is it to make a martini” or “have her bring home a mai-tai for me” sort of thing.

Saturday we get together for dinner with Amy. I have a huge urge to go to the Baltimore / National Aquarium. Maybe if one doesn’t happen this weekend, the other shall? If not, there’s always next weekend!

BHK teases me because I talk about stuff with her about who I talked to at work that day. She already knows and likes JD & RD despite not having met them yet.

Fix at the dump was easy, once we found out that they had the gate arm-lift plugged into the server’s UPS. D’oh. Trouble was compounded by folks claiming nothing had changed.

Today I discovered that “the cage” (where we send all of our discarded equipment for future review that may never come, a la the warehouse at the end of Indiana Jones) is located behind the detention center. All it’s going to take is one evil MacGuyver / Lex Luthor-type SMIB to bust out of jail to create a giant robot out of old dell monitors and forklift parts. Of course, the robot will probably turn on his creator and eventually begin a master Ultron-esque rampage to end all human life as we know it to be replaced by a more reasonable technology-based race. Ah well.

I'd rather go halfway...Make mine MODOK! (Hm, I may need to edit this icon to have BHK, Pye, and Newt all in Modok bodies)

I rec'd this in my email today - re: condo commando HB -
Late this afternoon he was arrested by Broward deputies here. I saw him handcuffed in the parking. Don’t have many details, but it almost certainly must have been for illegal entry (or something like that) into an apartment in A building occupied by a woman renting. We will know more tomorrow since all this should be a public record.

Rainy, wet day today… but that’s just all right with me. The gray skies throw the greens of the local flora into sharp contrast. Today is also my first official payday since 2006. I think that the last 3-4ish months were something else, but it’s really good to be back in the saddle and getting something accomplished that puts some coin in the bank. This one doesn’t quite cover the mortgage, but it’ll surely help. Next one will be even better, since it’ll be nearly 2 full weeks (less Good Friday).

Last night, BHK and I totally slacked off after grocery shopping. We nibbled on chips, cookies and soda-pop in front of the Tv for a bit, before.

Whoopsied on my auto-deploy for the lj entries – I’ll have to go back and redo the dates for m/t/w. Queue dropped them in a timely way, but not backdated how I like.

Grindhouse may be a possibility this weekend if BHK is into it.

Today’s lunch is pretty dang good – Cashew Butter on Hawaiian sweet roll, the last of the heard-boiled easter eggs, mac & cheese, last of the green beans, and a pair of cherry coke zeroes.

4:29PM - I’m doing telekinetic experiments in my cube. So far, nothing has levitated. Ah well, time to go!

Door codes were changed again when one of the team unthinkingly gave them to the air conditioning repair guy. It’s a shame, because the old code was very easy for me to remember, because it had good obscure geek significance for a 5-digit number … the one prior had a nice, fast keypad pattern that worked well. This new one is easy enough to remember, because of something totally unrelated, but it’ll be hard for some folks to hang on to. At least it’s not a 10-digit sequence.

The funny thing was people talking about other folks hacking the code … the easiest way to get any number is by social engineering, and the folks are so friendly and unassuming here that I think someone fairly slick could get it without anyone even knowing that it had been picked up. That’s one of the things I like about this place, though … sort of a small town feel, where everyone knows everyone else. It fosters a strong sense of community and camaraderie.

BHK and I made up for lost time yesterday and picked up a few work clothes, and stumbled over one of her ex-employees from about a decade ago. Fun to compare BHK's bookstore past to my own...she and I have had a lot of parallel development over the last decade and a half (or so) - not to mention the vast divergence in said development, too. Environment / Nature comes up with a few unusual branches there... more to follow when I'm not bolting out the door.
