Time to update your windows again. This one looks nasty. It looks like my auto update caught and took care of it last week.

Hrm....Okie doke... reunified my homepage, graphically. It was long overdue, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the linked journal page there yet. I dig that I can toss my blogrolling links below others on that page. My old one was looking sort of "1999", and has been long overdue for a makeover. Right now it's simple, but I can tweak and twiddle it. I think I might go with the gold and green text links rather than the white and gray.

Up next is reworking some of the text, revising my gallery, with maybe thumbs, and building a toy box.

Hmmm.... I get a rush job, I fire back a request for specs, and the person is having me wait. Nice to know that it's the CSR that's in a rush, and not the client. I can't give data unless they tell me the format and processes that they want done.

Does it bother anyone else that the little girl in The Ring is the voice of Lilo?

Update- good ol' Bret got the specs and ran with it. Kudos!

update mkii - Finally heard back from the Bro.. he's hanging in there, and getting by. he was at WF1, and tracking dwon gigs. More power to him, I say.

For the vampire computer game - Holy water is still at about Teasel and 4th

java Aquarius (from the makers of Fluxx) I'd really like to see multiplayer Fluxx online. I remember discussing doing something like that with A before finding out that he and H were fooling around on their associated spouses backs. I wonder how R is doing these days? Especially now that H & B have a baby that is probably about 2-3ish by now.

random scotto factoid - I drink a lot of orange juice.

a year ago - Newt's Tarot Reading, worked out Dan-route, How close are you to a nuclear waste hauling route?, wackies, big little books

two years ago - juxtaposition , news, audio mystey, assorted video tapes.

I still feel free use the term "fairer sex", because as a whole, I do find women to be more pleasing to the eye than men. If politically correct monkeys don't like it, they can lump it. On looking up fair maid, I think definition two is rather comical. I may yet use that in the future.

I'm looking forward to this... Apparently it's running trailer son Finding Nemo (when you can get there in a timely manner). The Incredibles - Pixar. Oh, you can bet I'm looking forward to it. Pixar supers! I notice that the music is like a slower version of OHMSS.

Also, Columbia Pictures has bought the rights to Marvel Comics' most famous black superhero, Luke Cage. Ben Ramsey (THE BIG HIT) will write the adaptation of the long-running character. Luke Cage is a former gang member from Harlem that is framed by his best friend and sent to federal prison on drug charges. While in prison, Cage volunteers for a medical experiment that ultimately gives him super strength and bulletproof skin. Using the new powers, Cage escapes and becomes Luke Cage: Hero for Hire. Avi Arad will produce for Marvel Studios. I wonder who could play him well? As long as it's not Will Smith, I'm cool. What about Iron Fist? Luke Wilson would be horrid, yet well cast, I think.

Sweet Christmas!

There's a weakness in my heart for zombie movies...I hope 28 days later is good. I've heard some positive things already.

COMFORT TV OR COMFORT BOOKS?

Comfort books, unless I'm too tired to even read, but unable to get to sleep. (Which happens a lot when I'm in need of comfort.) Cartoon Network, Discovery, and History Channel work wonders.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR FAVORITE SHIRT?

My current favorite shirt is a black white and red Tie-dyed "Pirates of the Caribbean" shirt I got from Disney world back in 2000. It's comfy, has hippy and pirate context, and reminds me of a lovely little vacation.

DO YOU WRITE? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU OVERUSE?

I write, and probably rely too much on detail of the area rather than cutting to the point of the story. Too much scenery. (It's the first thing I start trimming.)

BAND YOU HATE MOST?

Any that's playing too loud outside my bedroom window. I really like all sorts of music.

PUNK IN DRUBLIC?

Nah, I don't even drink all that much in private.

DUDE, I CAN'T *BELIEVE* PEOPLE...
Worry so much about the opinions of strangers with no apparent knowledge about what they're talking about. I'm concerned with opinions of folks that matter to me, and professionals in the field...not Joe Blow off the street. (Even most professionals don't matter to me, either, honestly.) The opinion of someone I know and respect however is very valuable.

FIRST BOOK I REMEMBER READING ALL BY MYSELF.
I can't recall much of my very young childhood, but an issue of Spidey Super Stories (a kids comic cross-promoted on The Electric Company television show.) Sometime in the early 70s. Easy Reader was in it, and Spidey was fighting the Lizard, while Spidey teamed up with Easy Reader to fight the Vanisher. (Edit) In fact, after a little googling, I just found a picture. April 1975 issue (so I was about 6 years old), picked up at the grocery store. I'm sure there were books before that, but that one stands out in my mind because I bought it with my own money and made a point of reading it on my own. There was a teenage-girl named "Thumper" who likes to dress like Napoleon Bonaparte and uses a boxing glove she hides in her vest to whack people in the back of their head when they're not looking. Her origin? "When the Thumper didn't get a Yellow Pony for her birthday... she got very angry and turned to crime. Dressed as the great French Hero Napoleon, the Thumper looks for someone to Thump." It was something very close to along those lines.

Hmm. You know, I hear that's the exact same origin Mysterio originally had. Except replace the line about 'someone to Thump' with 'someone to try desperately to frighten with rubber bats'.

I've come to a conclusion. Morgan Freeman must reprise his role as Easy Reader in the next Spidey movie.

I need to go to a comic book store and pick up a copy of this just to have again. Three Villains, Lizard, Thumper, and Vanisher. Pretty good for a kid's comic. 35¢ well spent.

FAVORITE ANIMAL?

I love a lot of animals... very difficult to choose one, but I suspect that my true favorite animals are Chimps..Or Giant Squid. No.. Gorillas. Gorillas. It's Gorillas. Unless they mean favorite animal in particular, and then it’s Newt, hands down.

Newtie!!!

STUPIDEST THING YOU'VE DONE IN THE PAST WEEK?

Overwriting a practically final draft of a project with one that was only maybe three feet into the journey of a thousand miles. 'doh!

SMARTEST THING YOU'VE DONE IN THE PAST WEEK?

THING FROM THE PAST MONTH YOU'RE MOST THANKFUL FOR?

Spending time with D. It's so nice to have someone there that knows and follows along a trail of weirdness, good vibes, nostalgia and friendship. I’m also very glad that Ray decided to reopen lines of communication, along similar terms.

Yup... my g: drive is just about toast. It keeps saying that it's been removed. It could be the cable, but I doubt it as the machine hasn’t been moved very much. Next time it comes back up, I'm mirroring it over to f... I hope that it snaps back long enough to do so. Fortunately, I've only been using it primarily for just kazaa and temporary games.

The G: was the last remaining part from Astley's old "gray market" machine, short of the case. It was only a matter of time. I'll replace it with a bigger HD as a self-gift this coming holiday.

Poor Dave is banned from getting any more toy soldiers to play mage knight with me, at least for the time being...which I think is fine. We both have more than enough pieces to play a big honking battle, plus we’ve been trading amongst ourselves to our mutual benefit. (I'm not planning on getting any more myself, unless something really amazing comes out in the next expansion... like pirate ships or something.)

Little knot on my skull seems to be ok... sore to the touch, but the swelling has gone mostly down, and I don't notice it unless I run a finger over it.

I've discovered that whenever ER is on, it's always about the abandoned little Russian girl. I can't say that I've ever seen any other episode, though I've run over this one about five times.

The Accexpo is coming soon...I thought it was thanksgiving weekend, but it looks like it's the weekend before now. It looks like they need volunteers.. maybe I'll take on a shift for free tickets. Security or door monitor is easy work, and you get some lovely perqs... free t-shirt and all. The gaming schedule has very little listed...the Marvel heroclix and mage knight head to head looks like the only things there that tickle my fancy, thus far.

Ok, enough lollygagging...off to work. See you later, dear journal.
scottobear: (Default)
Bonked my head on a branch outside, earlier. A mild bump formed, but nothing terrible.

My machine's being downright pesky... giving it a healthy defrag and diagnostic... hopefully that'll fix what's wrong. Lost the HD for a bit.

it's still pretty chunky, but it's still limping along reasonably well...just a stick and stop sort of thing.

if you have a aim name... (or more than one...) you've got 20 megs of hosty-data available to you. it's at http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ [update, a year later - netscape no longer hosts remotely to LJ)

Example from my biglug account

http://scottobear.com/lj/archives/100602/nessie.gif
(fixed after netscape opted to not remote host here)

I still think the browser is stinky and behind the times.... but this is a nice offering from aol. I prefer it to the landfill of CD's they send me.

Another pic or two from my Newton-bot account, test )

Not bad... twenty megs an alias, and you can create aliases quick as a wink.

Sometime mid-afternoon, I'm going out with my brother to pick up a little RCA to microphone converter, so that we can put those speakers on his PS2.... also going to hook him up with his playstation again. He's got the itch to play, and I really won't miss it. Maybe make the trip to Target so he can exchange a birthday gift for something more suited to him.

I need to adjust the CPAP straps a little.. a wee bit to tight.. leaves quickly fading pressure marks on my face, akin to pillow creases. I'm sure I'll have it feeling right tonight.

Even if you had the old version, download the new ad-aware. The update caught 14 new components on my system, even though I just formatted it about a month ago.

Brilliant Digital is a "sleeper" program that "detonates" weeks after being installed. And uninstalling KaZaa doesn't uninstall Brilliant Digital's programs. E-vile.

Yup, the A/C compressor died. Nobody to fix it today, the landlord says he'll call first thing tomorrow morning and let me know what time he's coming over. I pressed for what time first thing was, and he said 8:30. I'll be calling him at 9am sharp if I don't hear from him, and if he can't make it any sooner than 11am, I'm going to end up missing work. if he can't get to it at a reasonable hour tomorrow, I'm going to tell him that I'll go to Sears, buy another wall unit, and deduct it from rent. In that case, the upside is energy efficiency and that my utility bill will drop.

Looks like the internet at work is still down. I wonder how that's affecting production and what we're doing to get files transferred.

I wonder if exchange server is dead, too? No email is pretty bad. I think that I'll trot in my laptop, just in case. Off to the job. Later, dear journal.
scottobear: (stars in my eyes)
I was so tired at work today... it was feeling like someone took a straw, stuck it into my vitality tank, and was siphoning it. I'm all groovy here, though. I think I may've gotten up too early this morn (6am). I didn't have any food until 3pm, either. rethink that strategy tomorrow.

Brought home some cardboard boxes for Newtie to play with... he's contentedly chomping on his crinkle-bug inside one now. The sounds of a happy cat in a make-shift habitrail. It's a multi-story tube, with a hole in each one that he can fit through... though when he exits via the top, it gets kicked sideways.

It's nice, being able to please him that easily... it makes me feel good, knowing that he's so content and chipper.

Found a three-column template today that's css, works on Netscape 4.x, and doesn't use frames. Score! In English, that means I don't have to deal with multiple pages of the same crappy design for each browser I'm supporting. Good news.

Time now for tofu in peanut sauce with mixed veggies.. over white rice. Home made. That's right. yum!

Overextended myself on walkies last night... a little sore in my left flank. Had a long soak this morning... a little pre-emptive strike to fend off any potential yucko later.

Newt's Sphynxing to my left.
He was looking mighty egyptian when it caught him.

Had tasty, soft, warm brownies last night. Yumma. Sliced nanner in oatmeal for breakfast.

Have Tremors on in the background... first TV on in a while. They're going to show #2, and #3, afterward... I didn't even know that there *was* a number three in the series. Plus, Fred Ward is one of my favorite dog-faced actors. Cast a Deadly Spell, Remo Williams. What's not to like?

The first one is perfect for what it is... a classic, 50s style B-horror flick with an unseen monster, made in the 90s. #2 sort of blew it by showing the creatures so much... made them above grounders.

I'm so glad that I have a bathtub now.... a loooong hot soak while reading does wonders for the disposition.

I've got the urge to walk on the sidewalk inside the aforementioned Kinney tunnel, to take pictures. I wonder how heavy the exhaust is?

I can feel autumn's arrival. My hair and nails grow more quickly now. The air is beginning thin; I sense that there may be a little crispness in the coming month or so. I can feel more creativity welling up... I think in the summer I was only at about 1/4 full. I've got to stop writing in the notebook, and get back to full-bore production on the laptop or desktop. I think I am going with my revised layout for the home page... I just have to make the .css it's own file now (rather than embedded), and convert the pages over. Then I can change fonts, colors and shapes for everything all at once. Sticking to CSS1 though. Hopefully it won't suck too badly on NS.

Behold! Sphincterine, a product promising to make you feel -- and, presumably, taste -- fresh "down there". Naturally, you may purchase it on the web at mintyass.com. Everybody's talking about it! I don't know who showed the link to me first. It's not a joke...it's real.

Pucker, the brown starfish. *Snerk*

Tomorrow, either before, or more likely, after work... I must get three birthday presents. Brother... perhaps I'll give him $$...that's his preferred gift. Kev, the thing video game, and some blank dvds to burn... Newt? A big cardboard box, full of paperwads and milk rings. :)

100 words high school graduates should know. I confess that I didn't know antebellum, evanescent, and quotidian... but I do now! Of the others, I’m very fond of the words bellicose, chicanery, churlish and ziggurat. 97% is pretty good, I guess. I really *should've* known antebellum, though.

Join the collective unconscious, and help to develop an alphabet! Observe... the letter S.

Synchronicities.. my Best Male friends outside of work all have names that begin with 'D'. Dave, Dan, Derek. The three persons I love most are all Librans. (Sweetheart, Newt, Brother)

Random Scotto factoids - I have *never* lost a sock in the line of laundry duty. When I worked at the bookstore, and vacuumed up in the morning, I could get the entire morning crew to sing with me. Two or three girls (or falsetto boys) would do ewww.... ahhh-awh ah-ahh, while one guy would do the baseline. Usually Adrian, if he was in. "doom-doom doom"

Meanwhile, I would run the vacuum over the carpet, and sing: (the kids would chime in at the Underdog Chorus... italicized.)

There's no need to fear! Underdog is here!

when criminals in this world appear
and break the laws that they should fear
and frighten all who see or hear
the cry goes up both far and near
for Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

when in this world the headlines read
of those whose hearts are filled with greed
who rob and steal from those who need
to right this wrong with blinding speed
goes Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

It would make my whole day.

Just installed Debian on Big Brain to go along with Windows 2000.... it runs very cleanly, and will allow for more web-tests. I don't have a static address to attach scottobear.com to, but I'll be able to run a little gnu mailman and manage to fool around with the tech side of it when the urge hits me. I've had too many irons in the fire lately, and that's going to change... I've got it worked out now, and I won't feel guilty about not having perfected the thirty-hour day.

since I'm still getting into the swing of things, I'm only using packages considered stable, rather than testing or unstable.

I made it inside the house *just* in time to avoid the storm. Yay! It’s coming down pretty nicely now... it was sprinkling earlier, but the ride home was dry. A good test of the bike's splashguards. There are a zillion tiny frogs jumping around near the alyssum on the east side of my place. I thought that they were bugs at first... literally the size of large ladybugs.

Random Scotto opinion / factoid:

I liked Murphy Brown, before all the politics showed up, then it mostly sucked.... as opposed to the Ellen show, which was mostly stinky throughout the few episodes that I'd seen.

Oh, coolio...This radio-controlled flying-saucer incorporates a programmable LCD on which you can add your own scrolling message, i.e., "I paid $99 for a radio-controlled flying saucer!"

On the way home, past Mickey-D's... I noticed that they're selling hot dogs, now? How long has that been going on? I imagine it'd have done well, if they started in July 4. I see that the Cuban food that they tried is no longer there. Bleh...

Public schools officially opened today... wow, does the traffic pick up at that point. Who’d have thought that a yellow bus or nine would make such a difference? Of course, I live within four blocks of an elementary school.

Well, looks like Scotto forgot to hit post! Nigh nigh, dear journal!

Watched The Deer Hunter last night, probably for the first time in about 15 years or so. I'd forgotten how long it was, but it all works, no really extraneous scenes... good character evolution. Something different about it is that there's very little of the 60's social structure and politics to worry about... the men go off to war because they're giving back to the country that's given them the life they have. A very interesting perspective on descendants of Russian immigrants, too. I know that a lot of folks think that the movie is racist versus the Vietnamese, but the perspective is an understandable one.

Does Christopher Walken *always* play a guy that's insane, or going insane? I think so. He did look very young in the movie... twenty-some odd years have taken a toll on him.

A rough movie, not for the squeamish or easily upset or outraged.

The open source Apache webserver gained another 5.9% market share last month while Microsoft's IIS webserver lost 6.5% over the same period, as Netcraft's latest survey on webserver market share shows.

Apache as of this writing runs 63.5% of all websites on the Internet(66.6% of 'active' sites) while IIS runs about 25.4% of sites(or 24.6% of 'active' sites). I'm glad that open source is doing well *somewhere*.

No rain this morning... I wonder where it went? I hope that there'll be a return this evening, after I've gotten back home.

I'm in the mood to watch some Pete and Pete...maybe Nick'll bring that and the Milkman shorts back sometime soon?

To laugh often and much
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

The days are getting visibly shorter lately...The sun has officially set by 8pm, and it makes reading more difficult.

Work wants me to make them a website. I don't think I want to make one for them... I'm not sure... I guess I'll do my best, give them something that looks like the company's brochure, and hope for the best... it'll be a change of duty... but somehow, I don't want to go into doing a lot of web page design for the company...or, if I do, I want to be paid accordingly for more responsibility and a broader spectrum of skills put to use. I doubt that'll happen. (Especially since my design sense is spartan. I'm much better at programming and keeping interfaces simple, rather than the many bells and whistles that clients might want for a website.) That's one of those things that has very little definition, and I fear "Too many chefs" syndrome... Building a website for these guys is going to be an exercise in micromanagement and nit-pickery. When I write a program for the company, I know that there'll be set resolution sizes, no unusual ways of loading the program (like a non-standard browser / Netscape / opera, etc) and no diphthongs asking for "Hey, have something that chases the mouse with the company logo on it!" I must make a point of keeping an open mind... it could be fun. No more negativity, Scotto... deal with it as it comes.

I like the new Tori single. (Big shock there.)

You know blogging has become passé when a soap opera creates blogs "written" by two of its characters.

Watched a little 700 club this morning. He's got some severe logic issues, as well as a lot of internal hate. I went online to find a transcript of today's show, to reference ...it's not available yet. When my spiders bring it back, I'll have more to say. Long story short, the guy's a racist and has a lot of intolerance. Something about "Judge Not" is ringing in my ears.

Payday. I hope It gets off to a kinder roll soon.
