GeotargetThis card is my problem with compusa, along with really poor communication or support /offering of alternatives.

In a nutshell, it's been since November 10th that my Computer has been at the shop... everything else needing repair is fixed according to them.

Verto GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Video Card, AGP, 256MB DDR
Nvidia
Manufacturer: PNY
Mfg Part #: VCGFX595APB
Product Number: 308120
$499.88

However, that bad boy has been out of stock at the manufacturer, and at all known compusa stores in a 50-mile radius for the last 8 weeks.

With a $500 price tag, I'm obliged to wait, because I really can't drop that chunk of change on something that I should be getting under warranty.

The guys at the shop have given me two timelines, both of which have passed, now. I'm not quite sure what I can do, save for waiting.

Meanwhile, I have to do my work on poor ol' Battered lappie, My Toshiba satillite back from a time when Windows Me (I've long since replaced that with win2k pro) was "cutting edge".

I'd say that the only time I've had worse customer service/ communication was with Comcast... I have since boycotted them, though I've heard that they might not be so bad in other areas outside of SoFla.

Not having big brain has cost me some very significant social chat and play time in 2nd Life, LAN party activities with the old FMM crowd are out of the picture... plus, all of my downloaded movies / Netflix DVD archives are ground to a halt while the machine is gone... not to mention a lack of Newtcam.

I never realised how many people watched good ol' Newt during the day... I've gotten somthing like 80 emails politely requesting when he'll be back online again. If Big Brain is down another week, I'll hook Newtcam up to Lappie so folks can get an orange kitty fix.

I can only imagine what happens when pretty girls shut off their webcams. I suspect horny stalker-type guys aren't nearly as polite as cat fanciers.

Bro's pal Andy was arrested today. He's under wraps until September 26 for that grand theft charge and "resisting a merchant"... I'll have to look that one up.

I've said that more than a few times in my life.

I'll refrain from pointing any fingers today, mostly because it seems like that no matter where I point, I'll hit that situation regardless.

Computer's video card is on backorder. What the heck. Expected a in a week or so. Cripes... at this rate, I'd just be happy to get my device back before my birthday at the top of February.

Took paperwork home with me last night, just so I could get it finished, because the office needs have been so hectic the past week or two that I can't sit down for 90 minutes to crank out the proper thought required for the police interviews, data crunching, and etc without being bugged ever 15-20 minutes for something like "Scott, could you show me how to forward my email to someone again?" or "Burn me 20 CDs of that PowerPoint Presentation, would you?... oh, and could you customize 'em for the departments?"

Brainless, tedious stuff, but the vast majority of the folks there just don't know how to do that sort of thing... and what's more, they don't want to learn how. So, I go from being an underpaid Net Admin / Webmaster / Police Liason / Child Advocate, and turn into a highly paid power user because every 4/5 people there is a technical uglato.

Geotargetre: the get together at mom's place... bro was asked specifically to show up in a drug/alcohol-free state, so mom wouldn't be embarrassed in front of Wilts' folks. He arrived after having stopped off at the bar, looking grimy and disheveled. He mentioned that his pressure cleaning biz is taking off and showed me that he had some funds in the bank... good for him. Maybe he can pay back some of the dinero he owes the momster or me. I caught him in lies a few times during the day, including how he got there "a friend" "a bus" and if he'd been drinking.

I don't think that I'll be sharing me addy with him anytime soon, especially since he lied to me about being in Boynton. He declined a ride home, I suspect because he didn't want to have to turn around and go back to Hollywood.

On the upside, Wilt, mom, Rosa, Yitzi and the rest of the guests were cool enough, and there was a ton of food. (I brought home a lot of broccoli casserole and a tin of cookies). There was an interesting blend of Portuguese, Hebrew and English conversations going on....I wish I understood more of the non-English stuff that was going on in my periphery.

I'd already received my big giftie, (the futon mattress and cover), but my sticking had some more goodies in it. A few Newt toys (I think he's still partial to the toys he got from the Strawberry shortcake bag when Lisa/Lisa visited) and I got the usual stocking fare. Lip Balm, a new toothbrush, hand sanitizer, some chocolates, a notepad and sharpie pen.

scottobear: (Hello from bro - surfing)

GeotargetBro woke me at 2am on Christmas morning by calling me on the phone and asking me to look up some woman on the police blotters for Broward and palm beach counties. He claimed that they were going to hit midnight mass and she doesn't have a phone. She supposedly has outstanding warrants, but I didn't see any. When I told him that he was calling and waking me up at 2 f'ing in the morning, he barely apologized. I told him to call the police the next time he wanted to do a criminal search, or at least wait until a civil hour to ring me for a non-emergency.

Someone remind me to kick his keister when I wake back up.

GeotargetWent on a long walkabout yesterday... down Hillsboro to the beach, and then around to the Deerfield mall out on Powerline to see the Narnia movie and get $3.99 all you can eat buffet pizza at Cici's. Shared a table with a Jamacian lady on "holiday" in the states - I put holiday in quotes, because she was working her vaykay in a child care center. I dug Narnia... the Christian allegory was there, but it wasn't so heavy handed as to annoy any but folks that got offended at Tron or E.T. for the same stuff are going to bark louder over this.

That said, I quite enjoyed Narnia. The kids chosen to play were well-picked, and Edmund would make an excellent "Kid Miracleman" should someone decide to kick Alan Moore in the ribs and squeeze out the rights to make a movie. I quite enjoyed the CGI, which was smooth and believable despite what I'd heard earlier. I wonder how people that are unfamiliar with the books will do with the talking animals and other remarkable characters in the movie? Some might say it makes for a younger audience, but there are some grim parts that a little kid might not fare so well with, especially in regards to Aslan. (it is bloodless, but still strong content) I might've picked another person than Tilda Swinton to play the White Witch in the film, despite the fact that she did a fine job, I kept seeing the Borg Queen (even though Alice Krige is a totally different actress). The movie is as loyal to the story as I remember it (hasn't been read for years... possibly/probably a decade or more.)

If I had a kid, I'd certainly take 'em to see it over any Harry Potter flick. I may look for the Narnia stuff as Audiobooks.. I suspect that it'll transfer to listening-stuff better than Lord of the Rings.

Walkabout stats - 12.2 miles, burned 3034 calories. Good thing, considering that I scarfed down a pile o'pizza at Cici's. I'm glad there isn't one closer to work, or I'd be in diet danger.

Nose is a little sunburned from being out and about all day. Adds to the "Santa Look".

Hm. That brings up a question.

Found out that Cousin Billy (Uncle Bill's Oldest - both my father and his passed names down) is in jail for threatening his girlfriend's son on his answering machine. I wonder how Paula and David are doing... last I heard, Paula (oldest - 37) was in a similar clinically schizo boat as my bro and David (31)(youngest - Billy is the middle child, eldest son at 35) was married with a kidlet. Uncle Bill is a pretty well-off lawyer in the cape.

GeotargetTalked with Val yesterday... Rhonnie (22) is dating her paramedic instructor (38). Kind of gross, but I don't know the whole story. I'm just glad that she's happy and having a good time. Russ is doing well, looking for places to do his residency. Grew a beard so that he wouldn't look so "doogie houser". $15,000 just in flights around the USA looking for a place to set up his gig. He's going to have to be a doctor to pay off all of the debt he's accrued, it seems.

Kreuger gets out of jail this weekend, but the sex offender thing is going to follow him until he gets cleared. I honestly wonder if he's innocent.

Police called me up, looking for my bro to act as state's witness... I was right about my guess regarding my brother's "accident". He was badly beaten up by someone that didn't like his smart mouth. I contacted the office in charge of the case, (who left a subpoena at my old address) and passed along my bro's phone information. I suspect this might be why he's moving north, too... it's probably just not safe for him to be in this neck of the woods anymore. Maybe a severe beating is what it took to get him the hell out of Dodge. I hope he can keep his stuff together.

Never did get to hit the movies yesterday.. just went grocery shopping with RS and her kidlet. Man, I thought my bill was bad.. try feeding a family of four with two hungry, healthy growing kids! Narnia might happen today, if the stars are right.

They are called echizen kurage and they sound like monsters from the trashier reaches of Japanese science fiction. They are 6ft wide and weigh 450lb (200kg), with countless poisonous tentacles, they have drifted across the void to terrorize the people of Japan.

Jellyfish fun facts:
  • The most poisonous jellyfish is the Australian sea wasp, or box jellyfish, with enough venom to kill 60 people. Wearing tights is an effective defense

  • The largest jellyfish ever found was a lion’s mane, with a bell 2m (7ft) across, and tentacles extending more than 35m

  • The notorious Portuguese man o’war is not a jellyfish at all but a collection of different organisms including stinging tentacles

  • Jellyfish have both male and female characteristics. A group releases sperm and eggs which mix in the water

  • A collection of jellyfish is known as a smack

GeotargetMeal with Momster, Wilt, Rosmary and Yizzy went well... unfortunately bro could not come with us. I ate to bursting, and napped for an hour when I got home. After the nap, I procrastinated for a bit, by surfing the net on borrowed wireless and gave big snuggies to the newtster rather than stack boxes right away. at about 7 I went to final packing proper, and once I hear form Danny, I'll know when we'll be picking up the truck and trying move #2 in earnest.

Rosemary (Wilt's sis) is pretty cool, my first meeting with her. Yizzy is ok, a bit on the cheapskate side.

Bro was baker acted yesterday, after meeting the psych. He's now in a ward without a phone, but they can bring one to him. He tried to check out with his injuries and they made him stick around.

Apparently, some local "friends" have his stuff, even though he is supposed to be out of Hollywood. I suspect that he's totally back to where he was before, and is ashamed to tell me. All I really want is for him to be healthy, but even that seems to be a bit of a stretch.

Well, his time out wasn't too long, bro was picked up by the police on a warrant. I hope the morning and afternoon out of jail was worth it to him. Well, he's now where folks can keep an eye on him. Hopefully the warders will show more responsibility than he has. He's not listed on the basic arrest record yet.

Visit with Danny was cut cruelly short... I had to return home to help get the network in order and to take call for a bit. We had time for a drink and some dinner, but no pirate-ship battles. Mushroom pizza, Greek salads, he had a Manhattan, I had a rum & coke. Bonus bummer is that it was his last summer day. He's telling the sci-fi club that Fridays are out, so maybe we can spend time every few Fridays during the school year.

I really would rather not be tethered to the cell phone sometimes. It's been quite a hassle lately.

But, enough tales of woe. It's Friday. The Weekend is nearly here. Free buffet at the club. Time to breathe.

There was a lovely Koi river running through the regency where I had dinner last night and a couple of cute little ducks, too.

Via Mom-

Just had a call from Ms Swartz [bro's landlord] regarding Derek. She said he had not paid his rent and was served yesterday with a 3 day notice to vacate. She said she told him if he came up with his rent he could stay until the end of the month, but he had to leave by then. She said that she had numerous complaints from the other tenants of noise late at night, low life people and even a woman screaming. The tenants called the police, she has tried to get the police reports to get to the bottom of what was happening. She also said she went by the place and a very sad looking girl was with him...she said because she has met me, she feels badly for the family, but he has to go. This makes me sick and reminds me of his fathers last year..I'm at a loss.Mom

It's worse than I thought... and I thought it was bad. I don't think she needed to stick me with the dig about Dad at the end. I'll forgive her slight, as these are trying times for her. She seems to forget her involvement in that whole prior disaster.

I wonder if this entry will be public, this time next year.

I wonder if my brother will be alive, this time next year.

I hope he doesn't hurt anyone else on his way down. I've known for a long time that he's a no-hope situation.

scottobear: (1 - calm - direct)

Talked to Bro just now more about what happened last night and he's got conflicting stories. Called up the mom to get her input, and she told me he called and told her that he was robbed last week, not last night. Pissed, I called bro back, and he waffled some more, claimed he was robbed both times, and couldn't produce a single case number when I offered to track stuff for him with the police.

I told him to let his landlord and parole officer know what was up, and that if he *is* in fact getting robbed regularly, both by people he knows and doesn't know, (no breaking and entering, stuff just "goes missing") and he hasn't changed the locks...then it's time for him to move.

I can tell that most of his robbery talk is BS, because his precious xbox is still around. I can't think of him owning a more easily grabbed, pawnable, object of opportunity.

He's also certainly into shady stuff again... whenever anyone knocks on his door, he calls out that he's on the phone with his brother, or his family, and for folks to pipe down.

I told him that if he hangs out with shady folks, he's going to lose a lot more than his stuff... his life and his freedom will come next.

If he wants to spend the rest of his life in jail, that's his choice. He knows damn well what he's getting into or what he's gotten himself into. My family has tried helping him time and time again, but we know full well now that only he can help himself. I'm sorry that he turned out the way he did, but there's nothing I can do for him. I won't give him anything except advice, and that's something he already knows.

The guy just turned 32, and he's still got the social skills and attitudes of a 13-year-old, and shows no signs of change, even after hitting rock bottom, earlier this year. He still won't get a regular job, preferring instead to get money by hustling, or playing games.

He is the greatest disappointment in my life. Whenever he even starts to look like he's getting his act together, it turns out that it's all a lie.

On the upside, he has managed to pay his rent so far, and hasn't copped the "landlord won't do X, so I won't pay rent" line yet. Let's see how this month goes.

Bro claims that he was robbed last night. I have my doubts... he claims that he filed a police report. I'm going to call him on it later. I hate not being able to trust him at all. Traditional Chinese belief professed the existence of two "souls": the kwei (or k'uei) and the shen. The kwei (called the p'oh in life) returned to the earth at death, and dwelled in the grave. It symbolized yin, the feminine principle, and connected death, earth and femininity. The shen (called the khi in life) lived on as a spirit in the afterlife, although it could inhabit the grave for a while. It symbolized the masculine principle, yang. In general, it was kwei that became undead; shen undead were rare, and usually encountered only shortly after death. Traditional Korean belief is similar, except that the soul has an additional part that inhabits the funerary tablet or token.

Interesting Electoral vote prediction map.

The page has a fairly non-biased comparison between Bush & Kerry's Track records, too.

I'm surprised.. I thought it was currently a more even race. As of this post, Bush has about 59% (311), and Kerry about 41% (217).

Vampire queen versus Amazon (Confirmation at her Website here)

Writer Anne Rice, whose extravagant fictions about vampires and witches have made her famous and rich, vents her anger at readers who dare criticize her latest book Blood Canticle on the Amazon.com website and ends her lengthy, single-paragraph tirade by giving her home address in New Orleans and promising refunds to the disgruntled. My Favorite quote?
When you publish a book -- when you make art -- people are free to say what they want about it. You can't tell people they liked a book they didn't like, and there is, in the end, no arguing with personal taste. Different people like different things. Best to move on and make good art as best you can, instead of arguing.

I think Anne Rice going on Amazon and lambasting her critics was undoubtedly a very brave and satisfying thing for her to do, was every bit as sensible as kicking a tar baby, and, if ever I do something like that, please shoot me.

Interesting quote that applies to many blogs out here...

"You will just have to accept being addressed by a disembodied voice just as I accept the compulsion to speak out even though I am painfully aware that I am talking to an invisible, perhaps nonexistent audience."

Hmm.. so much for my getting Plastic Man. By the way, The Justice League Premiere was on last night at 8:30 EST on the cartoon network. JLU info. It was pretty sharp! I even liked Captain Atom, and I'm usually bored to tears by him. I look forward to seeing Booster Gold and Blue Beetle in something clever.

There's a lot of ruins... in Mesopotamia.

It amazes me how many 60's psychedleia fans have never heard of the 13th Floor Elevators. The early stuff is particularly good.

Lots of lovely rain stifled my walkabout plans, but i got to chill with ol' Newtman, and dig the thunder. I suspect the moonlight movie was washed away, too. Dave called to go see a movies, but there was absolutely nothing playing that was worth the effort. Maybe when AVP comes out.

I'd like to teach Newton how to make sandwiches. It's tough. No thumbs, and all.

Bro called me up and mentioned that one of his old cronies (his mooch-mentor ex-roomie) got his phone number and address, and called him up, threatening to come over and fight. Bro's still on his anklet, so any hubbub could land him 10 years in the can. Bro calls me, and asks me for the non-emergency number for the police.

I don't know if it's another cock-and-bull story or not, and I really don't care. Just adding it to my catalog of hubbub. It could be a ploy to get me to believe that he's trying to do the right thing, rather than do his old fight-thing, or it might be legit. All I know is that there should be *no* way that guy should've found my bro without bro's mixing with the wrong crew again. So, former variable of Bro$="dumbass" is more like a constant.

Ground squirrels emit an ultrasonic shriek to warn others that a predator is nearby. In the current issue of the journal Nature, University of Manitoba researchers report that while bats and whales use ultrasound for echolocation and to track prey, to their knowledge "ultrasonic alarm calls have not previously been detected in any animal group, despite their twin advantages of being highly directional and inaudible to key predators." From a New Scientist article about the study:
"Ultrasonic alarm calls might be beneficial because many of the birds-of-prey that catch and eat squirrels cannot hear them. Conveniently, ultrasound also has a shorter range than audible sound.

'It may be used to secretly warn others without alerting a more distant predator,' says (researcher David) Wilson.

I wonder if Newt can hear 'em? Or Dani?

Got something to say? Fair enough. Make yourself heard in a proper venue and suggestion area! If the idea's a thought to be a good one and presented well, it'll probably get implemented.

If it's *not* considered to be a good idea, and you're given perfectly valid reasons why... shut yer piehole, and be done with it. Please don't piss and moan about it, and don't keep resubmitting the idea once it's been shot down multiple times.Site Meter

mug shotMug shot enlarges if clicked on. Good Job, bro. You've finally gotten yourself into a situation that nobody can extract you from. I wonder if he realises what he's done to himself. A thief and a junkie. Want to know what else hurts, dear journal? Through the layers of his face and bone, I can see my father there. His name dragged through the dirt by the actions of his son. I feel so bad for my brother that it's a physical pain, and I'm so angry with him, if he were here right now, I don't know if I'd cry or beat the living shit out of him. Maybe do both.

Here's the rest of the story that I got from the police via mother. He and Andy were arrested for attempted theft of a boat from the marina down at lauderdale-by-the-sea. The owner caught them with bolt cutters, trying to put it on his trailer hitch. When confronted, (one holding a bolt cutter, the other, the broken lock,) they claimed that they were looking to buy the boat and wanted to see if it would fit on the back of the truck.

When they showed up at his apartment, andy was there, and there was an assortment of needles on the table. Also, his recently filled prescription (2/23/04) of Xanax, 60 count had only 27 pills inside. I don't know if he took the rest, or sold them, or some combination. He told me he was swapping over to zoloft, but apparently even that was a lie.

It's expected that his bond will be $5000, taking into account his prior record. Neither my Mother nor will I provide it to him. He can sit in jail and wait on his court date. Maybe it'll give him time to detox, and think about what a complete fucking idiot he's been. I only hope that Andy isn't too close by while all this is happening.. he took a trip to the pokey, too.(It's harder to buy junk in jail than it is in prison, from what I understand.) Apparently Andy confessed to trying to steal the boat, while bro is going to stick to his guns, and plead moron, but not guilty.

I don't know why a boat thief warrants six guys in unmarked cars or me having to look at a hole where bullets come out to kill people, but whatever. At least the Alpha-male cop was kind enough to bring those pills to my mother's house, and didn't require her to come out to the station. That's surely appreciated.

3am - brother calls me to get him out of jail. I can't, I'm on call, and the bail bondsman stil has my last fee... he says he'll call Mike to pay $150 to get him out. we'll see if his bail is actually that low.

In lighter news, morning thoughts.

Four new possible condos found and with luck, reviewed by me sometime this weekend.

Hmm.. my email post never made it. let's requote from yesterday -
Einstein's bagels are yummy, but the ultimate toasted cheese w/tomato on 12 grain is 21 frickin' points...That's way too high for what you get. Heck, that's nearly as much as three pumpernickel bagels with veggie cream cheese on it.... (and I like pump-bagels a lot more, too.)

1 goblin-fart bagel - 6 points
2 tblsp veggie cream cheese - 1.5 points.

one little sammich taking up 2/3 of my daily intake...dang. (at least the pickle was 0 points.)
Funny how 5 hours later, overeating a sammich doesn't seem to be so much of a big deal, eh?

Livejournal has added FOAF functionality... pretty cool. I've been waiting for a simplified version of this for quite some time.

via [livejournal.com profile] crschmidt
Some people might ask "What's the point?" The point of FOAF is to allow machines to look through people, find information that you might be interested in about that person, and deliver it to you.

Perhaps I'm interested in other people that are friends of my friends who live near O'Hare airport - I'm looking for a ride. So, I put in my FOAF file, which defines my friends, and tell it to search for "basedNear" codes of O'Hare airport. By using FOAF, it could expand out, find friends of friends, and give you back contact information for them.

The tools to do this thing need larger base data to advance. We need to be able to describe ourselves in a way that computers can understand in order to make better our interactions. This is the purpose of the semantic web - and LiveJournal is working to start it off.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/scottobear/data/foaf is basically a machine-readable version of http://scottobear.livejournal.com/info and Here's another way to browse my foaf via the explorerer

(If for some reason you don't want your contact information shared, there's an easy solution - simply choose to not have your information shown to all users, which will block it from your FOAF file as well. If you would like to block your FOAF file from containing information like your friendships, you can do so by including a URL in the Edit Information page, at http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml - simply fill in the "External FOAF URL" field.) Though, I can't imagine why you'd list interests and such, and not want them to be indexed and found.

Any literati-types know about some writing SJ Perelnman or Woody Allen might've done about seeing films at MoMA? I'm looking to help out a researcher for the Department of Film and Media over there. Any help would be welcome.Site Meter
