Netforum 2006/01 or /02? Upgrade is looking pretty essential. That's been part of my work lately, reviewing the next build and how well it'll get into place. I just want it to be as seamless as possible... minimise any growing pains.

Being a giant guy has the side effect of being used as a mobile landmark. I've had folks tell their kids that if the get lost, look for me in a crowd. Not for me to babysit 'em, just that my head and shoulders tend to bob above other folks nearby. Also, it appears that I'm one of those "hey, I know you" types. I look both kind and trustworthy as well as looming and scary. I guess it depends on if I've shaved around the goatee and am more awake than walking dead. (In that case, folks cross the street to get away from me.) I've been in Maryland for about eight months now, and my newest gig just one. I've already been invited to a lot of picnics, parties, etc.... I don't think it'll be too long before the combination of North Beach's small-townishness and other friendlies at work spirals it back up to a broader friends base. Right now I'm still a bit of "BHK's Hubby" or "Larry's Son-in-law".

Back in the old days (when I was in high school and thereabouts) I was Mr. connected. Everyone knew me, or knew of me through someone else. I'm not sure how that happened, but I suspect it's a side effect of the landmark issue above. I seldom bothered anyone, and folks rarely gave me any guff. I'm not as connected anymore - living in a new state, new job, etc. This came up during a little message exchange with Sirenity... regarding people who get talked to or "hey do I know you"ed a lot.

Dreamt of a white panel van with the word destruction on it. - BHK and I were hunting down somebody who sold us a faulty bed. We were pretty mad.... I wonder what we were going to do once we got the guy? That has no relation to the sailboat dream where all we had to eat was trader joes snacks that had gone stale. We were trapped on a catamaran with a big bag of stale crisps and candy-coated sunflower seeds... and no clean water.

Picked up a pair of new shirts, and two new ties. I never thought I'd ever own a purple shirt I could wear to work. I *really* never thought I'd ever wear a tie to work. Who knew? I actually enjoy putting on a corporate noose every here and again, even though it's not required wear in the office. It makes me feel a bit more professional and has the sense of a "uniform" to keep me a bit more focused on my tasks.

Sting from the Macaroni Grill wasp has completely faded.. .it really didn't feel like a sting so much as a very brief electrical shock followed by swelling.

Chore Wars lets you claim experience points for household chores. By getting a few people in your house or workplace to sign up, you can assign experience point rewards to individual chores, and see how quickly each of you levels up. Experience points are tracked both as weekly high-score charts, and as ongoing character sheets - every time you rack up 200XP of chores, your character gains a “level”, and their class changes to match the type of chores that they’ve been doing. (here's my character, if you want to invite me to your party )

Restless night sleeping, accidentally booted Newt off the bed once, but he stuck with me throughout the night. BHK was restless too, but I didn't leg-sweep her out. Pye visited briefly, but high-tailed it after the barest commotion. I dreamt that BHK and I were hunting animals, tagging them for reference, and re-releasing 'em into the wild. A side effect of geocaching, perhaps?

Bugah & Neil went fishing - to no avail, as the water was too choppy.

via jwz - Search for Lonesome George mate is long shot
While scientists search for a mate for "Lonesome George" -- the last known survivor of a species of Galapagos tortoise -- some say the effort to fend off extinction may be in vain. Even if a mate is found, George has not been interested in reproducing in the past and may not know how, former keepers and others who have worked with him said.

"He has problems ... he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing," said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.

Grigioni, now back in Switzerland, said she could normally get tortoises to ejaculate within minutes, but spent months manually stimulating George and never extracted semen from him.

Age is not George's problem. He is estimated at between 60 and 90 years old, and could live to be 200 and still reproduce, scientists say.

The visual differences in tortoises from different islands were among the features of the Galapagos that helped 19th Century British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. Since then, the tortoises have been hunted by pirates for their meat and their habitat eaten away by goats introduced onto the islands. George, who weighs 198 pounds, was found on Pinta in 1971.

Reviewing Openads for the company's ad server for the web. it seems pretty reputable and reliable, thus far.

Fire drill this morning was a welcome break in the day - cool outside, everyone seemed laid back and calm - helped move the rest of the time that much more rapidly. the 2pm meeting went well... lots of good information for me to ruminate over the next few projects. I really dig that I'm in an environment that will allow me to use the skills I have! (Last gig wasn't bad, but a lot of repetition. This time, there's a lot of room for creative thought along with brute force.

Day closed with S'mores over a fire pit, some preview fireworks, and then Bugah and I played a bit of "Destroy All Humans". Not a bad thing.

Took care of bills and had a nap while BHK ran to the store for last minute provisions - guest feeding is important. I was really bushed after last week's Danny-visit, and was needing the makeup sleep.

Misc cool stuff - Earth and Jupiter as seen from Mars picture and Desktop Tower Defense game. The latter is fairly addictive.

First major foray as a handyman-hubby looks to be repainting / doing some tile in the #1 bathroom. The former owner painted over wallpaper, and the steam heat of showering has slowly started to curl and peel... not to mention get a little bit of mildew underneath... time to peel it up, put down some grout and tile that bad boy. (After our guests leave - BHK and I will probably start next weekend.)

I wonder why so many people update their journals primarily when they're annoyed - is it more cathartic to just get peeves out on paper (or on screen) than it is to write about more enjoyable pursuits? Maybe that's why so many people kill off journals periodically, too.

I'm enjoying revver more than youtube... primarily because the compression isn't as foul.

Newsoms got here without a hitch - it's always good to see 'em. The boys are planning on doing a little fishing while here, and the girls are looking forward to some non-fishing related fun.

Played some Godzilla Melee and Rampage with Bugah, who is always up for some city-stomping fun while other folks hung out. Good folks, nice times.

Tonight we had some hot dogs on the grill (giant ones BHK found, and some jumbo veggie-doggies for me), took a walk on the boardwalk and beach, picked up a bottle of wine or two and some chocolate, and returned home to play a little Hunter & Gatherers. Bugah won handily, despite saving his river-huts until near the very end. I think Carcassone H&G plays better with more than two players.

We had our pirate "battle royale" 3-way 100 points each pirate fleet combat... BHK was quite menacing with two giant crabs helping her ships, but Danny took the game in the end via gold. I got really tired the last hour of the game - the start delayed by abut 2ish hours due to our wonderfully "grand central station" aspect of the house... it is always preferable to visit with family and friends than to hunker down and play.

Tonights plans include eating home made mac & cheese, playing Hunter & Gatherers, Witch Trial and then watching Shaolin Soccer.

I really like having Danny over, but I am a bit fatigued by the work/play/sleep/repeat method. I look forward to just vegging out a little bit. After Danny launches, Misti and the gang are coming, and then Amy. July will be is a busy month.

Got good news regarding the condo issue - via some counter-commandoes

Yesterday I spoke with Harold Hyman, chief of compliance with DBPR here. He confirmed the good news that, as I was told last week, they had basically found everything dealing with the election scam in our favor and the decision was confirmed by his boss in Tallahassee. The report is being prepared and we should get it in a few days. He also added however that, although they are firm in their decision, the board can and probably will appeal. This will delay things by maybe a few weeks. Knowing Horst, Phoenix and Tucker & Tighe, an appeal (and maybe other tricks) would seem inevitable. Well, we will rid ourselves of them this summer no matter what they do!

We'll see. I am glad that the condo regime is getting a bit of a shakeup.

via Beaucoupkev - Life-sized Gigantor memorial to be erected

Kobe, Japan will be the home of a life-sized Gigantor statue.

The 18 meter high, 70 ton Ironman-28 will carry the price tag of 135 million yen. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008.

Debuting in 1958, Tetsujin 28-gō was the first “giant robot” series, which became a staple in Japanese pop culture.

The statue will serve as a double memorial, marking both the birthplace of creator Mitsuteru Yokoyama, who passed away in 2004 in an apartment fire, as well as celebrate the revitilization of the area, which was devastated in the 1995 Kobe earthquake. GeotargetVisitor Map

On Thursday, BHK and I discussed Diabetes with the shaved ice man – after a bit of discourse on how he was told to stop smoking and got fat (and therefore pre-diabetic) was a scam perpetrated by his doctor; we got tasty sugar free ices. (Well, mostly. I got sugar free black cherry with sugar-full vanilla, and BHK got sf both regular grape and cherry mixed) This is after I hit a bake sale outside of the court house, and bought the network team some peanut butter & chocolate chip cookies. Network peeps like cookies. $4 well spent.

Friday was pretty uneventful, save that it is my 7th month anniversary! Looking forward to the 7th year and seventh decade if I live that long.

Received this from Matt in the mail... too true -

There are those moments when you come to that rude awareness of your own sentience. Hey, you say. I am not a rock or a piece of PVC pipe. I am not a tree or a dust mop. I am a sentient being! I am aware of my own existence! And how utterly kick-ass that moment truly is.

You may carry this thought even further and say to yourself: what a magnificent, truly remarkable thing it is to be a living being, to even exist in the first place! How majestic the Universe and how large!

We were not owed a life, or a Universe. They just sort of happened, without our advice or consent.

And then you say: Oh, holy crap. I forgot to do the thing, and pay the bill, and call what’s-his-face. And there’s that moment of satori done with. And you better believe that the next one’ll be a long time coming, my friend.
I don't know how long the next one will be... I get little nudges here and there.

Despite my body’s dislike of scented candles of virtually any stripe, my mind is curious about the vanilla lime scented ones down the road. Maybe I’ll just grow some vanilla beans and lime trees, and cut out the middleman.

The idea of keeping a beehive in the yard is still appealing to me. I suspect a blueberry or raspberry bush would be rewarding to me as well. I rather like the idea of having a “flying-ant farm” that also gives honey here and again.

All of the current shows are stopping... maybe now is the time to catch up with the shield season six, and the riches? Both have been sitting on the tivo, unwatched and unloved, though both are pretty swell.

Welp, it's the 7th year of this thing, officially. I won't have started regularly, uninterrupted daily posts until August 2000, but there you go.

Had lunch with in-laws, so they've gotten us two meals in a row after last night's trip to mama lucias.

I was totally tired and fragged out for the first half of today - I took a desperately needed nap, and felt much better. Did some light housework (bhk did the bulk of the heavy lifting) - She's out now taking care of TM's kitties as I write this.

Heard from her cousin David - He and Gill are moving to Charlotte today. I wish 'em the best of luck, and hope to see more of them in the future - possibly over this summer? The've got to be closer than where they were in Salem.

Nice day today... BHK and I initially wanted to make some coffee and sip it on the boardwalk in North Beach, but the wind quickly put the kibosh on that... My two caffeinated crack monkey companions soon decided that perhaps a nice drive through Deale might make for a more comfortable Sunday morning activity. (Thanks to the Love Cube's swell environmental controls and roomy tour vehicle status, no doubt.)

Peekatures from the drive (the very last is the boardwalk bay view, before we iced over)- some broken down/abandoned housing and barns, a nifty little food joint, etc. the 'Fabulous brew coffee shop" was a nice little joint to stop and get some scones and a caffeine recharge. Good (bad?) news is that they're opening another Fabulous Brew about 3 minutes away from our house. Will our tassimo survive? as always, hover for a minor description, or clicken to embiggen.

On the way to dropping Tina off, we noticed a lot of activity at the volunteer fire department. (the semi-decapitated gnome: semi-decapitated gnome at tina's is on Tina's neighbor's steps, as it has for a year. Each neighbor is supposed to take turns and pass the gnome off to the next person in line to mow as a bait to get him off the porch, but this neighbor would rather keep a broken lawn ornament than do his part.)

The admission to the dog show was free, but there were all sorts of opportunities to help support the local SPCA, no chains, disabled animals and adoptions... though I confess that the primary allure was wiener dog races (videos to follow once uploaded to google). Oddly, there were belly dancers, as well... but I didn't grasp the connection between them and animal assists.

Loving life in North Beach these days. It's absolutely beautiful outside...I still fear a little bit for Tigger, but our street isn't a major thoroughfare, so his risk is less than when we were at the blue house. I expect we'll get any remaining stuff from there this weekend, unless something comes up for more fun recreation. We're having David and his girlfriend Gill come over for the following weekend, so I expect some cleaning up may happen before then.

Lunar Eclipse this weekend! (Sat night). Hopefully BHK and I will be down y the bay to check it out.

If you live in the eastern U.S. and Canada, you'll see the eclipse in progress at nightfall. If you're east of the Mississippi River, you'll see the Moon rise while still in totality. But you may find it very difficult to spot the lunar disk at all while it's still very low in the sky. So, if your weather permits, note where moon rise occurs along the horizon on the evening before the eclipse; on March 3rd the eclipsed Moon will rise very close to that location.

Tigger's collar has a phone number that's disconnected. He's very affectionate, and I played with him for a while, hoping that his owner would come around looking for him. No dice, so I've put out a little bowl of food for him and am calling around to the local animal people to see if anyone knows who he is, and where he belongs.

[edit-update: Tigger's a neighborhood cat, who lives mostly out in the woods. Apparently he makes a good living visiting folks and eating food set out for him, and the occasional mouse and mole. I hate that he's an outside cat, but this region is moderately safe... I guess he'll continue to live out and about, unless someone adopts him. I'm a huge softie, and am liable to do it myself, if another family doesn't come by soon.. I don't know how Pye and Newt would deal with a third brother in the house.]

Tonight is the sleepover with Amy and Tina!

After a long comedy of errors catching up with Tina-bo-beena, we finally arrived at the HQ to watch Jackass 2 of all things. It was funny, in a sort of "what the heck kind of nimrods" kind of way... but I did like a few of the sight gags a bit.. the boxing-glove valentine in particular was pretty dang funny.

We went to Annapolis and walked around a bit - saw the Alex Haley Monument, and window-shopped at a few stores. We intended to see Ghost Rider today, but our timing was off. However, Sushi at Joss makes everything better. Even mo' betta' was that Amy surprised us and bought supper!

Feeling much better today - only a mild sore throat and some joint stiffness remain, along with a lack of appetite. Stayed home and was attended to quite gently by Doctors BHK, Pye and Newton.

Snow for Valentine's looks more like an ice storm a'comin'!

Saw a big bird in a neighbor's fountain up the street... BHK thought it was a statue at first.

Yesterday, at the regional home show, there was a huge display regarding "DRYER FIRE" - it turned out to be a $1 bottle brush renamed "Dryer lint safety brush", and selling for $20.

I say, "bah, a mostly synthetic danger cooked up by lint brush salesmen... if you clean the lint trap, how can can it be?"

If I were a more superstitious fellow, I'd fear cruel irony, as we're doing laundry.

That said, I got the idea for a new item.. the smoke detector smoke detector... to detect if your other smoke detector is on fire... because you know that more than nine out of every ten smoke detector fires is started inside a smoke detector. (I wonder how many house fires have started from an electrical short in a smoke detector?)

Pomonkey - best local Amerindian word / Town name ever. Aww.. Po'Monkey got no nanners! Possibly a place to get a gig re:security and etc, too.

Pomonkey had a dryer fire!

Garden plan -

Tina, the In-Laws, BHK and I have a garden planned for our back yard - planting begins in March for the first crop.
DSCN3860

It'll be in our back yard... Larry's going to bring in a few truckloads of topsoil and rototill by the end of this month... BHK and I will be working the section with broccoli, peas and parsley in March, and then continuing to pumpkin, watermelon, cantaloupe, cilantro, sunflowers, green beans and garlic at the top of may.

Other crops tended by the gang will include potato, onion, carrot, radishes, a few varieties of tomatoes, grapes, blueberries and all sorts of others. I expect it'll be a fun and educational experience... I haven't grown anything on this scale before, but we've got a master gardener, an engineer and a farm boy on our side to help keep things a-rollin'.

Finally Added Pye and BHK to my bio page... sakes! Pokey puppy Scotto.

It took the better part of the day, but the commode is finished. Before starting, we had a big pancake breakfast, courtesy of BHK - Chris and BHK went shopping while Larry & I worked on the plumbing... timing was good... we finished about 15 minutes before they called to let us know that they were heading back, and we ended the day with Chinese food, and watching Men In Black.

Got a nice call from Danny, too - his wife is in Bangladesh, reviewing a clothing place's quality control. I wonder what the quality of life is of the workers there.

Birthday is on Friday - Still not sure what, if anything will be happening for it. I suspect a quiet get-together with some family & friends... I'd like to see as much of the local gang make it if they can, but Friday night has got to be a tricky one, especially if it's short notice. Given the current financial limits, I suspect the Wii will be a rain check item.

Moved into the new place today... got most of the furniture in, phones transferred and direct tv set up - only a few minor issues with dsl (hasn't engaged yet).

Newt wasn't too keen on the snatch and grab school of transport, and turned into a bit of a tasmanian devil when scooped up to head home.
