Now, I'm watching an infomercial about 'super blue stuff' pain reliever... and it is extolling Emu oil.

Isn't an Emu a large flightless bird?

Just Chicken Fat?

Or is there some other sort of Emu? It strikes me as weird rubbing squeezed ostrich on some sore muscles.

I wonder if this works or is quackery, like so many other weird pseudo-aids on the market.

Yes, they get emu oil from large flightless birds. Its touted in the cosmetic industry a LOT, for all sorts of skin care products and soaps.

I think emu's primary product harvested are the feathers and eggs, both for decorative properties. Emu and ostrich meat was suppose to be the 'next big thing' in the eighties, but its pretty much failed commercially, so now they use the animals for other products...

I wonder why it didn't take off?

We're a very beef dominated industry...I've eaten ostrich meat and eggs and both are good and fine. But the chicken and beef industries probably pushed them outta business a little and kept the markets very competitive. Ostrich meat is usually 'too expensive' for most people to buy, for less, they're rather have familiar chicken, turkey and beef products.

Just a guess.

Emu oil products have been popping up pretty steady for the past few years...I don't think there is a large following, but some people are obviously buying...

I like shea butter myself :)

Is it tasty? I imagine a big bird would be more like 'dark meat'

I've been eating quite a bit of emu recently (someone I know is planning to start a restaurant and was given some samples). It's quite similar to beef (if you don't overcook it, which is very easy to do - low fat content) without the beef fat. It gets very tough/chewy if overcooked. It has a bit of an oily taste/aftertaste, and is quite fibrous (the structure of the meat is more like oversized chicken than beef). I haven't tried ostrich yet, but I'll let you know when I do. The local ratites (moas) were all eaten up 700-800 years ago. Each species of moa probably had its own taste, but I guess we'll never know.

I've eaten Ostrich before, it's actually pretty good. It tastes like steak and turkey. It's supposed to be a lot better for you than beef too. I also bought an ostrich leather wallet when I got the ostrich meat and I still use that wallet today.
