Hazy memories...

scottobearA 70s made-for-TV movie called "The Challenge". A potential war is averted by having both sides agree to single combat between two champions. So Darren McGavin and Mako are sent to an uninhabited island to fight. McGavin was using an SMG that looked like two Thompsons joined together.
That sucker became the fantasy weapon of choice while waiting for the Desert Eagle to come along.
Later in the movie McGavin, deprived of his weapon, nonetheless saves the day by finding deposits of pure sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. He combines that with a big piece of bamboo and a handful of the diamonds lying all over the place to make an impromptu cannon. Or maybe that was someone else.
