A 70s made-for-TV movie called "The Challenge". A potential war is averted by having both sides agree to single combat between two champions. So Darren McGavin and Mako are sent to an uninhabited island to fight. McGavin was using an SMG that looked like two Thompsons joined together.

That sucker became the fantasy weapon of choice while waiting for the Desert Eagle to come along.

Later in the movie McGavin, deprived of his weapon, nonetheless saves the day by finding deposits of pure sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. He combines that with a big piece of bamboo and a handful of the diamonds lying all over the place to make an impromptu cannon. Or maybe that was someone else.

I always thought Darren would be a better Cap'n. He was Kolchek, for Pete's sake!

...far be it from me to poo on your Darren McGavin moment, but I do believe that ridiculous homemade gun powder thingie was from an episode of the original "Star Trek." Captain Kirk was a crafty one indeed (and had quite a way with the ladies too)!

Quite right you are... (I was funnin' the Star Trek folk) The Arena is one of my fave episodes, just because it had a rubber lizard guy in it.
