scottobear: (1 - travels - where the road leads)
[personal profile] scottobear

Woke up on Saturday with a slight pinch in my back... must've slept a little funny the night prior... a hot shower and some stretching took care of the bulk of the problem in fairly short order.

Had a lovely day meandering about, looking for proper goodies to put in the apartment, sniffing at teak and rattan-type stuff. Saw a few things that had some potential, and a truly grotesque table that was also a drum made from zebra skin (and legs made from the hooves) which will give the more sensitive folk nightmares for weeks.

As always, we got a lot of good gab-time in, and I always enjoy a day's worth of social-time.

After doing some legwork, we swung by Tijuana Taxi, and the food was jim-dandy. The place was basically a Mexican version of Crabby Jack's - with better food. I'll certainly be back. (I've got 2 additional good reasons to swing by there, it's near both Danny's house and Tina's.) Since the refried beans were made with lard, I had the chile-cheese smashed potatoes, and they were tasty, though it took a moment to get used to the idea of mashed potatoes with a south of the border flair. I think I'll have to get something a little lighter next time, because the veggie Chimichanga was just too much after an appetizer.

When we finished, I took the BCT home... route 2 to the West Terminal, Route 22 to Central, and Route 10 right on home. I ate so much, I was *still* feeling a bit overfed 2 hours later.

The bus ride was nice, too... the rain started to pound down, coming in sheets to the point where I couldn't see more than 25 feet in any direction. Thankfully, the terminals are well covered against the elements. (most street stops aren't so blessed.) By the time I got home, the streets were clean, but the skies had fairly dried up, for the final walking-leg home.

OK, I just revisited the site and after dancing to Tequila for a while, I looked again. She looks shifty, like she might spit in your food.

Really? Is that why football fields are always North/South aligned?

Date: 2006-06-25 04:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com
Actually, I think that's due to the position of the sun -

Sanford Stadium is also one of the few college stadiums in which the football field is oriented to face East-West as opposed to North-South. Many of UGA's opponents have found it difficult for players to see as the West Endzone is still open and the sun shines in the faces of the players, although both teams face the sun during the game.

(the additional distance added to a throw is minimal, but trivially noteworthy... useful in wagers with the devil or whatnot)

I like the stencil graffiti. But can we call it graffiti? I think 'graffiti' means something like "little scribbles". Interesting how the context of words change. One of my favorite words like that is "cleave".

thank you!

I love word origins, too.

The word graffiti is a plural noun in Italian. In English graffiti is far more common than the singular form graffito and is mainly used as a singular noun in much the same way data is. When the reference is to a particular inscription (as in There was a bold graffiti on the wall), the form graffito would be etymologically correct but might strike some readers as pedantic outside an archaeological context. There is no substitute for the singular use of graffiti when the word is used as a mass noun to refer to inscriptions in general or to the related social phenomenon. The sentence Graffiti is a major problem for the Transit Authority Police cannot be reworded Graffito is... (since graffito can refer only to a particular inscription) or Graffiti are... (which suggests that the police problem involves only the physical marks and not the larger issue of vandalism). In such contexts, the use of graffiti as a singular is justified by both utility and widespread precedent.

Sometimes the usage of an adopted word gets a bit skewed because it "doesn't sound right" to use it in the original way. The rules of syntax can make words slightly off when used in different language. People refer to all graffitos as graffiti. It just sounds right and sometimes they don't realize its not English. English, being a borrower language, can get really confusing. Its no wonder people hate English class. Too much thinking involved.

One word that I find annoying and I can't break my self from saying incorrectly is envelope, as in the container for a letter. Around here it is said ahn-veh-LOPE or ehn-veh-LOPE never ehn-VEH-lope which would be more correct but sounds so very wrong because that is also a verb.

Pamphlet is another one I get strange looks for as I say it PAM-flet and most people I know say PAM-plet.

I was going to suggest that a local grafitti artist look at your site and then I realized you don't tag for grafitti. This could be a great repository of local grafitti.

oh, you know, you're right.. I do tag for it on my flickr, though.

The rotation of the Earth also makes our return flight from Turkey quicker than our going there flight. At first I was like, "That can't be true!", but when I thought about it it makes perfect sense.

Well, the flight we ended up purchasing we go through Frankfurt on the way there and Milan on the way back, so it's not really equal. When we were looking at flights through the same place it was a pretty decent chunk of time though, like 30 minutes or so, maybe more. As you can tell I don't remember the details to well :)
