scottobearNice to be relieved of on-call by EN yesterday.... I really prefer to have my weekend to myself, if it can be helped. Lovely rain all day Sunday, and I didn't do much in way of walkies, due to the foot boo-boo.
Feeling nostalgic for the mid-late 70s... Remembering imprints from the first decade of life, or thereabouts. Sort of funny...so many of folks I know and talk to regularly weren't even protein yet in 1975. Oh, for the good ol' days of eating Cap'n Crunch in front of the boob tube watching cartoons or whatnot before the sun has even come up, without a care in the world. Bro still just about 2 years old or so... My Dad about a decade younger than I am now, Momster even younger than that. Only responsibilities are not to wake anybody up.. maybe do a little coloring, or read a book about dinosaurs with word searches and connect the dots at the end of each chapter.
Even as a munchkin, I had to have mixed media piped into my skull... tv, reading, writing, coloring, action figures (or tiny ones, like army men/cowboys and indians cast in plastic).. usually all at the same time. I'm the only person I know that drew crayoned outlines on paper of my GI Joe and Hulk Dolls. Not that I was playing coroner, or anything. I just liked filling in the silhouettes in different poses as a kind of multicolored version of Hiroshima shadows, usually in multiple overlays.
I still remember that Hulk doll with the torn purple pants and the left leg repaired with a nut and bolt across the knee by my dad. More flashback-type stuff from that period.

juliabee put me onto heifer.org - Nifty sounding group to help teach folks self-reliance.Heifer's mission is to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth and they do that by working with communities. Heifer provides families with training and a livestock gift. The family then has hope for a sustainable future and they in turn become donors by passing on the gift of the animal's offspring to another family in need. Take a look at this video to learn more about this organization that helps families all over the world.

Though the term "time doorway" is used through the series, the "Land of the Lost" is not meant to portray an era in Earth's history, but rather an enigmatic zone whose place and time are unknown. The original creators of these time portals were the ancestors of the Sleestak, called Altrusians. Some time doorways are metallic triangular booths called pylons, with mysterious and unpredictable powers, sometimes opening and closing unexpectedly. As a result, the Land is occasionally populated with a variety of visitors and castaways. Inside each pylon is a stone table studded with a grid of colored crystals, and moving them can trigger various events.

Date: 2006-06-16 03:47 am (UTC)Scattered throughout the Land of the Lost, often embedded in the walls of caverns, are a variety of colourful brightly-glowing crystals that the Marshalls dubbed "light crystals" and which Enik called "fourth-dimensional nodes." Sizes vary from boulder-sized chunks to the more common walnut-sized gems. Their most common colours are red, blue, yellow, and green, though other rarer colors, such as white, have been seen or mentioned.
The most common use of light crystals seems to be in crystal matrix control tables, or simply as sources of illumination. Altrusians used them as a power source for their technology. On their own, the crystals generally do not have special properties beyond their glow, but bringing two different-colored crystals together can cause additional effects in some cases:
* Bringing a red crystal together with a green one causes the pair to emit a blindingly bright but generally short-lived light (Holly used this pair for sustained light in "Elsewhen"); this combination is often useful for driving away Sleestak.
* Bringing red and yellow crystals together causes an explosion after a very brief delay.
* Combining red and blue do nothing noticeable, but adding a third, yellow crystal to the pair causes them to emit a fierce shock.
* In general, yellow crystals appear to trigger releases of energy from other crystals.
* A blue crystal and a green crystal together create a temporary force field a short distance away. This use was taught to the Marshalls by Enik in "The Stranger", but in the later episode "The Search", the Marshalls attempted to reproduce the effect and nothing happened. (It is possible the crystals they used the second time were insufficiently charged.)
* In general, blue crystals appear involved in telepathic functions. Blue crystals alone can under some circumstances hypnotize people into seeing what they love most. Jefferson Collie also mentioned that blue crystals "make you sick", and discards them when he mines them in his cave. The Marshalls eventually receive a set of pendants made from blue crystals that provide a sort of clairvoyance, in which one wearer can see what the other wearer is seeing and hear what they're hearing.
