Bush and Kerry repeat discredited claims in their final flurry of ads. Here's factcheck's pre-election summary of the misinformation found during the Bush-Kerry presidential campaign.

I love that site. :))
I've found some things there discrediting some of the exact things I've heard people state as their reason for not voting for either one of the candidates.

Though..I did see some flurry of debate on my list about factcheck.org not being as non-partisian as they say they are. Since then, I try to take the info I get from them, and research that, too. Still, they give their sources... and that's a lot more than I can say for many political spots on the web, and that includes the media.

The above is why debating politics sucks. People spout stuff, believe it with their heart of hearts because it makes complete sense to *them*. They don't understand why you don't believe it too...without understanding what they believe has already been discredited in a bajillion places.

Using my icon one last time. ;)

I'm wordy on this politics stuff lately, huh? :0)
Just waiting...waiting for it to be over soon.

It's Day of the Dead! You surely can have ghosties and scary bat-onions today. :D

I agree... factcheck is just a stepping stone to do follow-ups. They seem to be able to dig more dirt up on Bush, rather than Kerry, but both have more than enough fibber-mud on 'em to look plenty dirty.

what you mention above is also why religion is such a bugaboo to discuss... everyone has a slightly different book, and few are willing to look outside of thier own tome.

I'm happy to see you so wordy! I really like it when you share your thoughts and opinions on things, because they're well-reasoned and thought provoking.

You mean, it's a case of "tome is where the dart is?"

sorry.
sorry.
sorry.

That brought to mind the spoonerism about prostitution in Alaska.

There's a Ho's place in Nome.

I noticed yesterday that their front page itself was mostly pointed at Bush. Was thinking some would notice that too..and could take that one of several ways being that it was just 48hrs to election. Haven't looked to see if they've updated, though. If Kerry wins...I wonder if the score will start to even out there.

I was tempted to put down Mickey Mouse as my write-in candidate on my ballot. I didn't, of course...but did entertain the thought for a second. ;)

You're right about the religion, too. Even some non-religious peeps are unwilling to look outside either. Though..they think they are.

"because they're well-reasoned and thought provoking"

Funny you say that. I've noticed as I get older that I see some viewpoints that far left and far right political people won't grasp or maybe can't grasp? Outside of politics...I've noticed the same thing with extreme left and right brained people, too. Not always on the latter, but enough to be noticeable.

That's true, about non-religious, though I cheat and call athiests and agnostics religious in thier own right.

Heh.. I wanted to put down Boris Battenov for prez, myself, but resisted the urge, as well. Great minds think alike!

I suspect that most places will lean against the incumbent, just because a mass of evidence is usually easier to gather? I'm sure all manner of hubbub about Kerry will bubble to the surface, if he's eleceted to office.

I'm not sure what lobe I lean on more... I think that I rely on my hindbrain, lizard thoughts for most decisions I havent' bene more informed on, and my forebrain for stuff thatI've managed to research.

I think that I'm a bit more right-brain than left, but I'm not sure. My wiring switches every now and then.

Exactly! Which is why I call myself Areligious rather than either Agnostic or Atheist. I was raised pretty much entirely without religion. My dad is an atheist, and I never really went to church or anything like that...they flirted with Unitarianism for a while, but hell...that's pretty much organised Agnostiscism anyway.

I do sometimes tell people I don't believe in a god, or that I was raised by an Atheist. They assume this means I am an Atheist, and I don't bother to correct them. But really...It's something so outside my experience that I don't have a strong view. I have never been "trained" to believe in a supreme being of any sort; Jesus, as far as I was concerned, was pretty much just a figure that a holiday was organised around. It's like an entirely foreign culture to me, on par with, say, the Kalihari Bushmen. I see them on TV and in movies and I know they have been living the way they live for centuries, and they are happy with that lifestyle...but I could never live that way, nor could I imagine ever wanting to. It works for them, though, and that's cool...but it's outside anything I can relate to.

My Agnostic belief is fairly areligious, too.. I figure that I have not seen sufficient evidence to decicively support a case for or against... and it would take something of an amazing leap to sway me one way or the other.

I figure that Jesus was a good guy, son of God or just a fringe rabbi saying to be nice is beside the point. The point is to show kindness.

Best protest banner I've seen thus far was a few months back and read: "Lesbians against Bush!"

Make of that what you will...

the most important issue in this election IMHO hasn't even been covered in the advertising. THE SUPREME COURT. these guys wield immense power (remember 2000) and are appointed for life.

I've never been fond of "appointment for life".

if you look at the scope of deception on both sides and the "actual" facts as reported by factcheck, i still think you have to favor kerry.

The problem is... both of the campaigners are liars.

Big fat juicy ones.

I hate voting for the "Lesser of two evils".

If Kerry's boys had simply kept their noses clean, it would make them look that much better, rather than running negative, false adverts.

If we want better candidates, we have to vote in the primaries. Only 25% of Democrats bothered.

That said, I don't believe either candidate is evil. I vastly prefer the way Kerry will do the job, however. It isn't about the lesser of two evils, it is about the better of two choices.

That's true... I think a major reworking of the party system is in order, but if nobody votes, then what's the point?

The better of two choices is another way to look at it, but I still get the feeling that I'm a vegetarian trapped on an island covered with bunnies and turtles... neither option is what I'm looking for... where's the coconut?

what are the bunnies and turtles eating?

They're magical bunnies and turtles.

all the more reason not to eat 'em!

for what it's worth, I went with the turtle. Easier to catch, and the shell makes a nice hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

I would have gone with the bunny. Tastes better, and turtles lay eggs!

I try to avoid politics as much as possible, because you can't trust any politician. They may claim to be doing whats best for the country, but they don't see it from down here with the everyman.

That's true... the only hope is that what's on your agenda is sort of on their bigger agenda.
