Yeah, I've been ranting over in Christy and Lisa's journals about it. I can't believe we've come this far as a nation. It always pisses me off royally whenever someone's first amendment rights are "nudged."

Date: 2004-10-27 07:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com
it's that whole "threaten the prez" thing.

first amendment is a slippery one when someone's safety is concerened... the whole "shouting fire in a theater" hubbub.

That said, I can't really judge since the actual post is not viewable... the thing that gets me is that someone from LJ reported it ot the FBI and it was followed up enough to make a legal issue of things.

That's the part that gets me too. Hell, I wouldn't even know how to report something to the FBI.

Yes, I totally agree... and without the original post, who's to say that there weren't some thing said that could be construed as a threat.

I guess this just comes down to two things:
1) We aren't as insular as we think we are on LJ
2) We're all being watched.

heck, I've known that!

That's a dubious honor, at best. You know what people search for on the internetS?

What Constitutes a "Threat?"

According to this law -- 18 USC Sec. 871 -- which reads, in part:

"...Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

That covers a lot of deeds and statements. It gives the Secret Service a lot of latitude when conducting an investigation.

While I know that anything is possible, there were quite a few people who made posts like this right after the patriot act *first* became a hot topic throughout LJ. It didn't really don on me then, but the fact that this came out days before election smacks of something fishy.

I'm a bit spastic when it comes to political research out there. On both candidates. There are blogs and forums aplenty out there, far worse than this person's. Let's see..I wanted to read about Bush and Kerry in Skull & Bones. I typed in "bush cult" (hehe), and see how many blogs you get bringing it up. Type in "Bush {insert anything}" and you get tons more. In all these years, I've never seen any of them talk of the SS knocking on their door, and a few of them are downright threatening & dark.

Maybe it does take someone alerting the SS...but I could see someone alerting them on some of the scarier boards and blogs out there, y'know?

That said..maybe it did happen. :D

Now, that's a very good point.

For what it's worth, it *is* a felony to threaten the president's life in print or broadcast in any way.. has been since long before carter was pres, let along a bush sr or jr.

there's something that I'm squeamish about when it comes to calling the secret service "SS".... makes me think of waffen SS.

Whew. I came back because I logged off and thought, "Holy cow...I hope that didn't come off snarky, because it wasn't". It occurred to me while logging in, that you had probably already replied to me you zoomer! :)))

So Grateful that you didn't take this as argument. Truly just discussion.
I should have expected though, that you wouldn't take it as anything but.
That's why I like you so much. :0)

Earlier today, one of my in-person friends got mad at me over another political discussion today, and they're not speaking to me right now. I didn't want that to happen here, either. I'm smart enough, and aware of myself enough to know when I'm just discussing vs. trying to change someone's mind. I love to discuss things. Somewhere in the conversation they said they hated the discussion, and accused me of "discussing in order to change my (their) mind". When I said I truly though they brought it up to just discuss, they said "Get it through your fat head that..blah..blah". They hung up the phone after saying that, and we haven't talked since. :/

I mention all this, because I never want you to think if I reply to you on any subject that I'm attacking you. That's not what I'm about. I'm pretty laid back about opposing political beliefs, but that doesn't mean I don't find them fascinating to discuss. I have no political agenda. ;) Though, I do have a pet agenda. :D You and I pretty much agree on a lot of political things anyway, from what I've noticed. Though...this person and I voted for the same candidate, so I guess that can't be an indicator of anything either.

That journal entry of that person's has been spreading through LJ like wildfire. I don't know if it's true..so there is no way I can discredit it. I do know that things are nuts in terms of what both sides are doing to stop a vote in this election. Looking through the comments there, it was interesting to see how many people (looks like on the surface anyway) believe it to be true and passing on the info. That worries me, when it comes to what peeps will believe about anything they hear in terms of politics from others on both the Kerry or Bush side.

I had been thinking about it when your entry came up...so I just started discussing. :0)

And yeah, you are right about it being a felony long before Bush. That said, I don't want the SS on my doorstep either. :o

P.S. Whoah, what the..? I reread my first comment -- what the heck was I doing with my grammar? Ah well.

Of course I'll never take anything you say as an attack! :D I've commented back and forth with you long enough now to know you've got a good head on your shoulders and aren't an angry crankcase. That's part of why I like YOU so much!

I don't mind if someone discusses things or tries to change my mind, if it's done in a civil, intelligent and preferably an entertaining way.

There's a link from javamental above of the original post...

I wonder who called her out and sent the fbi after her for her rant?

Your grammar is fine.. it got the point across nicely.

I hope that you and your buddy work things out soon... politics is a poopy reason for a fight!

Date: 2004-10-28 02:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] juliabee.livejournal.com
Well, gee..I made a long reply, and LJ ate it. :(

Thanks for posting that screencap...puts some perspective on it. Seems like - she really didn't know to not do that, even in jest. Thought not knowing just don't apply when it comes to threatening any of the you-know-who's lives or when stating you have a b*mb in an airport or on a plane.

11/2 can't come quickly enough!

Date: 2004-10-28 02:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scottobear.livejournal.com
I know the feeling... lj gobbled up my first reply to you, too!

her "threat" was sort fo boring, too.

I'd rather see something like...

"I wish the president would be elected mayor of whoville, so we can get another one"

or at least make a snarky pretzel conspiracy comment.
