No movie last night - instead we went to dinner with the in-laws, and after BHK and I played some boardgames. She won Labyrinth, and I took Oshi. (also discovered that the oshi set has one extra two-point piece, and one too few one-point pieces. we may play with pyramids in the future. (or penny, nickel, quarter as towers, for that matter)

Both were our first time playing - BHK got labyrinth for $1.61 at the thrift store yesterday... we've more than made our entertainment money back in a single sitting. We picked up Oshi from Aardvark a little while back, but hadn't gotten to play until last night.

Other goodies BHK picked up from the store -

  • Green Orvis Mosquito-repellant shirt for Larry
  • Green lounge pants for Chris
  • Pink Bucket hat for herself
  • Green striped shirt for me
  • a few books, including Stephen Fry's The Liar for me, and The Enchanted Broccoli Forest cookbook
  • a couple of puzzles, still sealed in the box. (corvette 1000 pc, spacewalk, homer simpson and an irish hutch)

Dreamt last night that I'd signed on to join the army for six months. Not really a dream of mine in waking life - a lot of the gang from high school were there - Steve Jacoby, James Dawsey, etc... we were all in training as sort of a semi-serious laugh. My big concern wa sthat I had to bring my own toiletries... like the army wouldn't provide deodorant or shampoo.

thanks, ecto -

The first 2 parts of the “lost” film Italian Spiderman has been up for a week or two now and it looks to be just as ridiculous — and awesome — as the trailer had indicated. Give me Franco Franchetti (R.I.P) with his porn-star moustache and pump-action shotgun over Toby McGuire any day.

scottobear: (travels - where the road leads)
In a nutshell -

Slept in a little, but we made it for my allergy shots by 10am.

After the obligatory injections, a quit stop at starbucks for a lackluster peppermint latte - we won't go back there again. The Giant across the street has a starbucks inside, and if I'm going to pay $5 for a coffee, I'll get one that's excellent - not that poorly assembled mess I had for breakfast. The sugar cookie was ok... I think the fac tthat it was shaped like a penguin added flavor.

Headed out to Maerten's - went to look at BHK's ring lemon quartz in white gold... sort of our own lime-vanilla ice. The staff there was very kind and helpful; Jamie in particular had more than a few good ideas about setting the stone and we'll be meeting for sketches soon. I'm glad we could find a place that we like and trust so much to do what we want.

went to Aardvark - picked up a few fun little items to fool with in the days and years ahead.

Easter Island (I love the game pieces ) Reminds me more than a little of Laser Battle, but with added nifty bits here and there.
This game speculates that the easter island statues were, in fact, beam weapons created by two very powerful wizards. These wizards used the statues in a giant game, with the island itself as the board. You are now one of those wizards...

Easter Island lets you place your statues and move them into position. Then, when everything is ready, call upon the power of the Sun to topple your opponent's statues and thus your opponent.

If fishes were wishes - again, the game pieces are cute.
"Players are fishermen, trying to catch the most valuable fish and sell them in the market for the best prices. With limited space for storing caught fish, players must use their wits to get the right fish to market at the right times. This is where the granting of wishes is most helpful. Just catch the fish who will grant the wish you want, throw it back, and you get your wish. Sounds simple, but the game does require a bit of thinking and planning. The wishes can help you increase the value of fish when sold, grant you extra storage space, and several other useful things."
Spree - Shopping, gunfire and violence. How could I resist a Cheapass Game we didn't already have?
"Springtime. Midnight. The Mall is beckoning.

Welcome to LeGrand Mall, the oldest and most poorly secured indoor mall in the world. It's as airtight as the Titanic and as solid as a wet paper bag. This place just begs to be robbed.

Enter you, and your infantile collection of friends. It's not enough to simply loot this mall. No, you have to do it with a certain amount of flair. Which boils down to an all-night looting race, with shopping carts, flashlights, and guns.

The object? Park your car, dash into the mall, and load your shopping cart with the goodies on your list. You can snitch stuff out of the stores if you like, but it's even more fun (and easier) to steal it from your friends. And that would explain why you're carrying a huge gun."

- includes a variant of "a bunch of extra violence we've never tested", such Running People Over.

In addition to our normal game purchases... BHK convinced me (with very little arm-twisting) to pick up some comics - all miniseries at the moment.

Current story lines about -

Started getting hungry and went on a quest for a Pizza Hut... Stuffed Crust pie, in particular. When all we could locate were take-out places, we chanced upon the Do Dah Deli. Good find. BHK had a foot-long corn dog and shared pinwheel fries with me - I had a build your own sammich.... I just went with an assortment of cheeses, sprouts and veggies with honey mustard. It was all quite tasty, though there was a mix-up with our order. Easily fixed, and no worries.

Side Track Hobbies - I think we've found a place to fill Larry (and my own) Model train needs. The place looks tiny from the outside, but once you're in there, it's warehouse-level storage of all sorts of stuff, from z-scale on up to big ol' yard stuff. The Marklin Selection was really quite nice. I wish I'd had access to this kind of loot when I was tabletop gaming... I bet Danny'd have a field day with dioramas.

Lastly, we hit the Children's Bookstore next door. We got more than a little bit of Christmas Shopping done there.. not all for kids, either. Bugah and Em were the highlights, however. Once the lady running the place found out that I did computer stuff and having a little discussion of her fondness of Mac over PC (I feel it's a religious discussion... only seldom to people get converted one way or the other) - I showed her how to upgrade both her MacBook and PC workstation's software. She was an older lady, maybe in her early 80's, but was very vital and possessed of strong opinoins and beliefs.

Comments of note from her included commentary on Univeristy of Maryland / Virginia Tech teachers from the 1950s, fairy dolls, and her firm beliefs about Macs vs PCs. However her most memorable comment to me was - "Pomonkey indians are in a terrible state, especially since they started intermarrying with colored folks".

(In early Colonial days, Pomonkey was known as "Pomonkey Indian Land," for it was heavily populated by "Pomonceaks" as John Smith called them on his map of 1608. Pomonkey is a plateau of land surrounded by the Great Mattawoman Swamp. The Indians had followed many trails from every point in Southern Maryland for the rich hunting and fishing in Pomonkey. These converging trails became roads for the European settlers. Hence, Pomonkey very early became a site of local commerce.)

A slight Soda-spill later, and we headed on home, with a brief stopover at the in-laws. We caught up with My name is earl, and then hit the sack.

Not a bad day, all in all.

Lore found this listing of sources for D&D... I remember when the books listed were in the back of the old DM guide. The detail makes a fun trivia read.

example -
A lychgate is an entrance to a churchyard where a body rests before burial–”lych” means person or dead body (From German “Leiche”, meaning “dead body, cadaver, corpse”). The D&D lich is very similar to a character from Taran Wanderer, by Lloyd Alexander, a magician with an unnaturally-extended life who can only die if the item he has stored his soul in is broken (in this case, a bone from his little finger); however, the term “lich” is never used in the book. The origin of both the D&D lich and Alexander’s character is probably the Russian folkloric character “Kotshchey the Deathless”, also an unnaturally long-lived magician (or demon) who was almost impossible to kill.

125 things about scottobear, continued -

047. Brent, Steve and I really liked to go to Passport pizza in front of the Boynton Beach mall - specialized in "regional-style" pies. German was sausage and kraut, with caraway seeds... Mexican was spicy beef, cheese and onions... first time I'd ever had a Hawaiian pizza - green pepper, pineapple and ham. I did a quick google search, and there's still one in Boca raton... I wonder if it's the same people?

048. The was an Ice Cream shop right next door to Congress Middle School - run by some really nice guys, and it was a good stopping off point to play a game of gold bug (a dig dug knockoff), or work on D&D characters while eating a rocky road scoop on a sugar cone.

049. first job with an actual paycheck was at a Taco Viva in the same Boynton Beach Mall, where I poured beer at age 16, and left latex gloves for food prep filled with el scorcho sauce in the freezer. Layout of the old Taco Viva and a Sample storefront. both are identical to the one I worked at.

050. While the mall was being built (1984 or so) - Steve, Brent, and I explored it constantly. A great spot to play laser tag. Imagine a whole set of mall-walls, sand and cover available to 15 year olds! layout is here, but you can't see all the hidden back alleys and service points that made it wonderfully fun and probably quite dangerous to play in. I think the biggest game we had out there was maybe 10 men to a side.

051. hates deadlines. yucko.

052. is very thankful for his life and family in the here and now.

053. is a terrible chess player, though he loves games (too busy being social to focus, I think)

Friday 5 -

1. What's your favorite cereal?

Variable... I'm digging Cinnamon Life right now, though.

2. What is too gross to eat in the morning?

Well... human eyeballs are too gross to eat at anytime... but first thing in the morning is pretty ok... I could eat a boca burger and a beer if I was hungry enough. I don't really have a set time for certain foods.

3. What time do you go to bed?

Usually about 11pm

4. Where do you put your keys?

Front left pocket, or on a neck lanyard.

5. What vegetables do you love?

I like the starchy-yummy ones, like potatoes, sweet peas, and corn. Also dig broccoli, green beans and spinach more than a bit.

Neighborhood shakeup tonight at about 7pm - A minivan chasing another - apparently the second vehicle had 2-4 people inside with the side doors open and guns showing. The vehicle being chased was honking and swerving all over the place to avoid being shot.

BHK called 911, and the response time was *terrible*, and she was never questioned by the police for a report on the matter. I'll be investigating that situation more tomorrow after work.

I'm just glad that she's ok.
Random factoids and semi-specific things about people I know (or knew):

My brother is *really good* at shucking oysters. At least 4-5 times faster than me, or 2-ish times faster than anyone else I've ever met in the service industry.

My wife is a superb analyst, and can get to the core of a matter quite swiftly. She's going to be an awesome lawyer. (and dangerous gamer)

Steve Jacoby has some beautiful children, and has the makings for a pretty cool dad.

Tina keeps a lovely home... everything is crisp and neat, even with a pair of kitties, a bunch of birds, and living the software company lifestyle.

Bruce can make me misty with just a bowl of cheerios .

Ray has a very real skill at blending words and experience into story.

Kathleen has a great memory, to the point of us calling her queen index when we were gaming. If she doesn't have knowledge, she can find it fast.

Cyn has a fantastic skill at illustration, both on paper and skin.

Doug Wu has a near encyclopedic knowledge of comics from the silver age. Knows more than anyone else I've ever met.

Danny is a mill that grinds slowly, but exceedingly fine. He's a living example of "the devil is in the details."

Father-in-law is loved by everyone he meets. *Nobody*, and I mean *nobody* has anything sideways to say about him. That's amazing.. and due to him.

Mother-in-law is a superb cook. Some wicked good queso, for example.

Mother is a master multitasker. I've never seen her with too much on her plate.

Wilton is an excellent carpenter - can put all manner of stuff together with quality and speed.

LONDON (Reuters) - Lawyers and judges are to break with centuries-old tradition and cease wearing horse-hair wigs of white fake curls in non-criminal cases, the head of the country's judiciary announced on Thursday.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, said new dress rules would mean the requirement for the wigs, which legal professionals have worn since the 17th century, would not be needed in civil or family court cases.
Wing collars and bands can also be dispensed with in such cases according to the reforms, while judges will need just one gown in future instead of a variety of colourful outfits currently required.
The wigs will still be worn in criminal courts.

"At present High Court judges have no less than five different sets of working dress, depending on the jurisdiction in which they are sitting and the season of the year," Phillips said in a statement.
"After widespread consultation it has been decided to simplify this."

A review carried out in 2003 found that more than two thirds of respondents wanted to eliminate the wigs in civil cases, although most said criminal court judges should still wear them.

Opponents of wigs thought they were anachronistic, as well as uncomfortable and expensive.

A shoulder-length ceremonial wig costs more than 1,500 pounds while the shorter ones worn by lawyers cost about 400 pounds each.

However, the idea of abolishing them has been met with disapproval from some lawyers who feel the wigs give them an air of authority as well as anonymity.

"While there will never be unanimity of view about court dress, the desirability of these changes has a broad measure of agreement," Phillips said.

Ides of may. I miss my pop today – This is the anniversary of his death, but I’m not feeling as melancholy as I have in the past. It has been many years now since he passed away – 18 years, I think – just about half a lifetime ago.

Mom got a call from bro last night – he went before the judge and has 6 months at a work camp. He doesn’t know when he’ll be transferred, but he won’t have probation after that. I’m not sure if he’s getting off easy or hard.

Most of my challenges these days are physical or financial – those can bleed over into the mental, emotional and spiritual sides, but for the most part I’m doing quite well. I really like my new life here – I can understand why so many Florida expatriates have such little desire to return. There are some things that I miss, like the water taxi and a few of my more well-beaten paths around Broward & Dade, but they don’t hold a candle to the new stuff that I’ve been enjoying and looking forward to. Crime concerns are greatly diminished, not counting Baltimore or DC – and the people here have a small-town sort of feel. A lot of very polite and kind folks that are good about making me feel welcome can do wonders for any atmosphere, though the bay is beautiful in and of itself.

BHK and I are watching the dust slowly settle around the house – the blue house is pretty much empty save for a trunk and some light misc. I still have a few things in Florida storage, but aside from my bike, I don’t miss much of anything there. Most of what I miss about Florida is no longer in Florida . I miss gaming with Ray and Kat, but they’re in Texas , now. I miss goofing with Kev, but he’s in Gitmo. I miss hanging with Steve and Brent, but Brent died, and Steve is in Seattle . Doug is in Seattle , too. My Bro is pretty much lost to me.

Danny’s still in Florida , and I miss doing stuff with him. He should be heading out to us this summer during vacation.

BHK got me a Blueberry Vanilla Ice for after work - it was a welcome closure to the work day. Got a haircut in prep for tomorrow's thing.

Well, go figure! I post about Steve J, and he goes and finds my LJ. That makes 4 folks from high school reconnected! ( Clayton Griffin, Jim Goodmon, Steve Mancour and Steve Jacoby.)

It seems that SJ has been quite busy these last two decades or so. (I guess that’d follow!) He is now married, has a beautiful family, and has had broad assortment of careers. He still looks just the same – actually, probably a bit healthier than I remember. I imagine that chasing the little ones around helps a lot as a form of working out (in addition to martial arts training.) I was apparently way off on the Broward county search; He’s now on the opposite side of the continental USA in Seattle . When I got the reply to my last entry, I first thought it was from one of my LJ buddies having a prank on me. I was suspecting that perhaps Robert or some other Seattleite (Is that a word? Must be … spell-check seems to like it.) was pulling my leg. Not so – even though Steve Jacoby is a pretty common name on Google & Yahoo (The name of one of the victims from 9/11, not to mention countless others.) Beau Brumfield is less so – which led to his finding my LJ. Not sure how long he’d been reading it before yesterday when I mentioned that I’d like to hear from him – it’s been quite a while since he came up in online conversation.

Steve and I sort of lost touch after high school… he was focusing primarily on the Arts crowd and I’d slid into a more Technological Track. The last I’d heard, he had headed North to Tennessee (or perhaps Kentucky , as third hand information tends to degrade rapidly) when I was in college, and we never really kept up. He and I both gave up on Brent about the same time – Once BA started hanging out with Jaques and the LWC post-grad crowd, things degraded pretty rapidly. I sort of slid over to the James Dawsey / Robin Tunkel gaming crowd.

Random notes about Steve – both he and Brent were in my first car on the first day I was driving.

He had a VW that seemed to have one headlight perpetually out. My first experience with hearing an air-cooled engine. I can’t even guess at how many rides he gave me to places. I rode to school with Randy Leipzig (who later killed himself over a depression / girlfriend issue) and [whatshisname Justin, maybe? – curly haired guy w/ glasses.]

Horsing around the swimming pool at Lisa Gordon’s house (one of our first meetings with Lisa and Pam M), I went to push him into the water. And missed by about three feet. He got scraped up a bit, and I felt amazingly bad about it. Most likely I was especially guilty due to my being a show-off in front of Pam. Steve was a bit po’ed, but was a pretty dang good sport about it.

Pre-high school, when I went to Congress middle, he frequently helped me with my stuff onto the bus – a heavy book bag (1/3 school stuff, 2/3 reading materials not part of the curriculum D&D, generally) and a Tuba (or Baritone, depending on the day I was bringing stuff home)

Steve and I were both thugs in the LWC movie “The Arthurian Project”, and we made an assortment of goofy movies like “Raiders of the Lost Sock”. We both picked up on some very rudimentary stop motion techniques. I wonder if I still have that video tape in storage at the Deerfield Condo? Might be fun to digital transfer and post those.

All you can eat Po’ folks country fried steak night… Steve passed out and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. I thought he was goofing at first.

Steve’s dad always had tastycakes on top of the fridge, and smoked.

Ken Krupowies lived not too far from Steve’s place.

Steve, Scott Clark and I playing impossible mission and eating pizza at Clark ’s place. Clark ’s mom had a gentleman caller, and we could hear them enjoying each other’s company through the wall. I made a little comment about it and Clark turned up the TV volume, and I was never invited back. Steve said it was because I left pizza under Clark ’s bed, but I really think it was my comment. When have I *ever* left pizza behind?

Of the old gang, Steve was the nice guy of the group, and I think probably the most physically durable.

We went on a few road trips here and there – Complete Strategist, other gaming stores, the Xanadu KFC, Kevin Cummin’s Father’s cabin

Steve’s silly recreation of Clayton Griffin’s Print shop obsession

“HE’S SO MAGIC!” – a la Flaming Carrot

Playing D&D with SJ, BA, LG, PM – pre-canned sessions of silly polyhedral stupidity, Arduin grimore dungeon crawl, with day-glo orange covers.

I need to flesh each of these out some more… so BHK knows what I’m talking about, at least.

Playing D&D with SJ, BA, LG, PM – pre-canned sessions of silly polyhedral stupidity, Arduin grimore dungeon crawl, with day-glo orange covers.

I need to flesh each of these out some more... so BHK knows what I'm talking about, at least.

Today at work, I had First Jolly rancher in about two decades – grape. Yum.

Went with BHK to visit Amy and her family at a nearby flyball event. The dogs were adorable and seemed to be having a really good time. Strange to see an event with such a wide variety of breeds.

Stumbled across Woodbine (at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield, Maryland on Liberty Road (Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward halfway to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). This was the original trail that existed before the National Road was built (the road that runs through Lisbon).

Rebel calvary crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and at Hoods Mill, just a few miles eastward on the river and the B&O Railroad scouting the Union Army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of the existing road and up the west side of a creek that runs south and that joins with the Patapsco River just 100 yards west of the existing road. That original road, now partly unused runs north 100 yards from the river and then eastward to join up with the existing road today. There was no bridge at that time, just a ford in the river.

The town straddles the Patapsco River both north (into Carroll County) and South (into Howard County). In the 1920s and 1930s the town had a large canning factory on the Carroll County side of the river . There was another small canning factory, from the turn of the century, run by water power west of Woodbine at the foot of New Port Hill. Remains of the factory still exist and the sluice where water came to run the machinery is still visible in the wooded area below New Port Hill leading north to the dam, no longer existing.

Just north 300 yards and west of the existing road was a wormseed distillery, where wormseed oil was steam-distilled during the 1930s and 1940s; this small factory was later converted into a tomato and corn canning factory.
