job fair - some possible hits there!

After, we visited twilite zone comics and then games and stuff - got micro mutants. Wargame with a tiddlywinks mechanic. looks fun!

Lunch/ Dinner at Gina's Cantina - then off to Sam's club - It turns out that my card from work got understandably canceled - semi annoying since it took a year to get the thing, but it was deactivated withing a week of departing. trouble of a yearly schedule, I suppose.

Tomorrow I do a callback for Georgetown gig? Wish me luck, dear journal!

Nokia developing phone that recharges itself without mains electricity
A new prototype charging system from the company is able to power itself on nothing more than ambient radio waves - the weak TV, radio and mobile phone signals that permanently surround us. The power harvested is small but it is almost enough to power a mobile in standby mode indefinitely without ever needing to plug it into the mains, according to Markku Rouvala, one of the researchers who developed the device at the Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge, UK.

The difference with Nokia's prototype is that instead of harvesting tiny amounts of power (a few microwatts) from dedicated transmitters, Nokia claims it is able to scavenge relatively large amounts of power -- around a thousand times as much -- from signals coming from miles away. Individually the energy available in each of these signals is miniscule. But by harvesting radio waves across a wide range of frequencies it all adds up, said Rouvala.

The trick here is to ensure that these circuits use less power than is being received, said Rouvala. So far they have been able to harvest up to 5 milliwatts. Their short-term goal is to get in excess of 20 milliwatts, enough power to keep a phone in standby mode indefinitely without having to recharge it. But this would not be enough to actually use the phone to make or receive a call, he says. So ultimately the hope is to be able to get as much as 50 milliwatts which would be sufficient to slowly recharge the battery.

Hap-Pye New(t) Year!

Something I post at the top of every new year, and I appreciate the words more with every additional trip around the sun.

Love is
is not rude,
it is not self seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices in truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.

453 entries in 2008. (417 in '07,618 in '06, 975 in '05, 716 in '04)

At this rate, I'll break 10,000 entries by this time next year... of course, some entries are beefier than others.. I've been cheating a bit with the picture posts - still haven't done a breakdown of my holiday loot yet!

But for now, a recap of recent history -

BHK took Amy to Urgent care last night, as her dog bite was getting more infected - worried about swelling and red marks. While they were at the doc's, Shaun and I played Easter Island (I won!), and watched Bones on TV with my in-laws. The girls got back about 45 minutes later, and Amy's wound was freshly cleaned and re-wrapped with gauze.

After the ball dropped, the in-laws headed off, and the rest of us played witch trial into the wee hours. (BHK took that one, but Amy wasn't far behind. I really thought I would win! d'oh!)

Amy, Shaun W, BHK, the in-laws and I rose at about 10am, (after staying up until 3ish) and headed off to Gina's Cantina for a nibble on some tasty brunch. No sign of Tyson or Gina, but the food was tasty and abundant, as usual.

BHK napped a bit and then did some work while Amy & I play Lego star wars / Mario Land 8 on the wii for about 4 hours. I feel pretty guilty about that - I wish we had another controller, or could have played something amongst the three of us.

Amy grew concerned about her issue - BHK went out to get some fresh bandages for her, and if she doesn't feel significantly better by tomorrow morning, she'll probably head home.

My earache also started kicking up - could not eat dinner tonight as it hurt to chew. Going to the doc tomorrow, so my appointment timing is good.

Went back to gina's cantina, this time with the in-laws in tow.

my "hair of the dog" brunch was pretty close to the 8 layer "slop bucket" I noshed on the day prior, but it had scrambled eggs and a tostada shell rather than a mound of guac. (aok by me.)

had the same table and the same waiter as yesterday. nice guy, chris thinks he looks like alan.

my layers today were... hummus, jalepenos, refried veggie beans (a lovely purple), cheese, scrambled egg, sour cream sauce of a sort, black olives.

bhk made up for my lack of guac by getting an avacado boat, filled with hummus, too. additionally, a couple of soft tacos - beef.

larry got a really good looking burger, and chris got a drunken taco salad, which had similar sauce to my drunken tacos yesterday.

finished off with sopapillas - yum.

we went to the antique store, and bhk found mr peanut salt an pepper shakers for $2, which have sold recently on ebay for $25. (however, it's likely we won't sell 'em. Mr. peanut is a cool cat.)

got some other toys - wimpy and bluto, mac tonight, papa smurf and something else. I forget who. [edit: Foghorn Leghorn, and Henery! - why do I have such a mental block?]

Picked up a book of hard-boiled detective stories, and BHK got a few cookbooks.

then went to the purple poppy, and what used to be sputnik (now lures.)

after - we wet to sam's and picked up some essentials (cheesy poofs and garden burger) - but they didn't have a wireless cable router... or decent clothes bleach!

Sams... you let us down. fortunately, your muffins make up for it.

we went home, watched a little tv - primeval and iron chef cooking "offal".

gnite for now dear journal... picturs and a broadened post may follow, if I get time.
