Monday monday - back to work! Not much to post about... general purpose day, but BHK picked me up afterward. We met Chris and Larry at Lemongrass - Larry wasn't gaga over it, but the rest of us enjoyed the feed. We parted company soon after - BHK and I hit the store and got the boys a new water fountain and a toy or two. I barely fended off BHK's request for goldfish and crabs and hammies and gerbils and kitties.

ATW man has varied a little from his valentines outfit.. now he has a red wig on, no heart shaped box of candy, and the rose still clenched betwixt his teeth.

If anything, he looks a bit like a grateful dead album cover at the moment. hard to get good detail with the camera phone and a back light, but bigger gets a bit more.

Taking a hint from edbook, six years ago (friends only link) -

50 things I've done in my life:
(I'll do it 10 at a time each weekday, I think, due to time constraints.)

1. 'was run over by a car while riding a motor scooter - snapped my collarbone. If the front wheel had been 6 inches to the left, I'd be dead.. 2 feet and I'd have been fine. The car never stopped to check on me, it just kept going. I didn't know it was broken at first, until I called GP on the phone and he advised that I flex my arm. After I unblacked out a moment later on the floor, I went to the hospital. Only bone of mine that broke... unless you count teeth.

2. 'have been every male part of a wedding ceremony, short of the priest. (ring bearer, usher, best man, groom). In that order. Will I be ordained enough to do the last one someday?

3. 'saw at the very least five different kinds of consensual crime performed in under an hour... my last night as a bouncer. The pay was good, but not worth going to jail for... even if nobody there was complaining.

4. 'met my wife thanks to the internet,  livejournal, and an ex-girlfriend.

5. 'got a scholarship to clown college, but opted for computer science... more lucrative, and I don't do well with sawdust-based environments.

6. 'is allergic to cats, but happily fostered and then adopted Newton-kitty when he was 3 weeks old - bottle and rag fed him every 4 hours when he was still in the nursing stage. I now live with 2 cats and don't show allergies much around them, but other animals will give me red eyes and sneezles, until I adapt to 'em.

7. 'worked for an organization that helped to search for missing children. I think that my heart was in the right place, but I'm glad to have moved on. It can be heartbreaking to hear about a kid that didn't make it, or to see petty behavior on the part of an org or the police result in stupidity that could potentially cost a kids life. Plus, I don't like being rattled every time the cell phone rings... now when the phone vibrates, the worst thing is a downed server or a weather issue. It's taken me about a year to get out of fireman-alert / stress mode every time the phone rings. I do feel that the national center is the best place to turn to when a child is missing.

8.'worked in a library through most of college and high school - during hurricane Andrew. Got to reshelve and relocate books while wearing a miners lamp on my head under rows of black plastic tarps... no power, no lights or AC. Until discovering them underfoot in the stacks, I had no idea scorpions lived in South Florida. Also, people bring porno to "read" in the rear stacks... ick.

9.'was also in the civil air patrol during Andrew, and got to see how destroyed homestead got... I had a huge amount of pity for the folks in NOLA that I might not have if I didn't see areas of just rubble and water where homes used to be. We got to round up food and water for people out there... it's what I imagine it to be like in an area struck by war.

10.'has offered spiritual advice to people, even though I have no idea what, if anything, is beyond the veil of what we can see. I've helped people through crises of faith and to find a common ground where elements can be conflicted even though I haven't the foggiest about my own faith... and I'm ok with that. I don't know if that makes me a hypocrite or what.

So, Tron 2, the movie in 2011? I've got to wonder about that one. Will I see it? Yes, if it's going to be in 3-D. 3-D makes everything at least a little bit awesome. I'm sure that BHK will want to fo see national Treasure 3... and I'll be fore it, if it's in 3-D, too... but no word on that.

The son’s tooth helps to save dad’s sight

Rob McNichol’s son — also called Rob — didn’t think twice when the chance arose to help his dad to see again by giving him a canine tooth.

Father-of-eight Mr McNichol snr (57) was blinded in a work-place accident, when liquid aluminium exploded in his face in November 2005.

But he can now see again after doctors, using groundbreaking surgery, inserted his son’s tooth in his eye.

The surgery, Osteo Odonto Kerato Prosthesis (OOKP), involved fitting a living canine tooth with an optical cylinder and transplanting it into the eye cavity

The surgery, which costs an estimated €40,000, is believed to be the first of its kind to be carried out on an Irish resident.

Pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, Osteo Odonto Kerato Prosthesis (OOKP) surgery is carried out on patients for whom conventional corneal transplants will not work. It entails replacing a damaged cornea with a live tooth root and attached optical cylinder

Started the week by taking a new route to work! Get an extra 10 minutes or so to sleep in, Fewer road hazards and a shorter trip home! Seems like a winner, so far.

Rice and Beans combined with the last of our yummy thai/curry soup. I swear that BHK is an amazing chef. I suspect that if she went back into the restaurant field that she'd have quite a following.

We watched Curse of the Golden Flower last night... it seemed to continue forever, and didn't grab me at all. I think that I was expecting Hero or House of Flying Daggers, and it just wasn't that sort of flick. The sets and visuals were nice, but it just didn't elicit any strong feelings or thought processes from me.

More pictures from our sushi night on Sunday, and another picture of the "Prisoner Inn" - Flickr uploader has been very flukey lately. It cuts off uploads midstream and drops items from the queue... I may just go with the web interface from now on.

Last weekend, I couldn't sleep at one point.. played a little Tf2, loaded the 2nd life update, but didn't log on, and got to the last level (haven't completed it) of Portal. So far portal-wise, I've gotten 4 accomplishments - not bad, given that I play about 20 minutes or so at a time, and half of that is spent just piddling around the environment.

Screamin' dill Pickle Pringles - Funny, yet, it's about as extreme as tap water... or we just got the most feebly seasoned stack, ever. (Impulse's comment about it being slang for gonorrhea is better than any gag that comes immediately to my mind.)

Not to be outdone, BHK recently had a "Jack Pack" of Beef Stick, cheese stick and pretzel stick.

Went to the train show with Larry and BHK after my shots - Fortunately, the ice has melted, leaving just water all over the place to drain... not a lot to photograph that wasn't there last year, but I took a couple of small shots. (see the far more plentiful photos from feb 25, 2007, for the better stuff.)

We returned home, and we were all pretty good about keeping purchases to a minimum.. Larry got some Rolling stock and a cool soundboard.

Most exotic food item of the day... Larry shared his lunch with me.

He made a peanut butter, banana, mayo and potato chip sammich. Knowing this, I still took a big, healthy bite.

It wasn't bad! Not something I would make for myself, but maybe reduce the banana and mayo by half, and I'd do it again easily enough. I've done pB, banana and honey before to good results, but this was a new level.

Hmm... Champions online, since marvel pooped out. Not a bad idea. I wonder how well it'll do as a sequel to City of Heroes? More "whack a mole", or will there be some cool Champeens roleplay?

Coughing... but poor BHK is feeling more sick than me. It's certainly chilly this morning, and is expected to be snowy midday today. Quite a change from Monday's balminess.

If anyone out there wants to send me a dvd of swarm of the snakehead, please do! BHK and I have been giggling like goobers for the past week about snakehead fish. If push comes to shove, we may fork over the $17 for the DVD, but I wonder if it'll kill the pure goofiness of the previews. Maybe I can learn to sew, and make a knit snakehead ?

All silliness aside, the snakehead is a serious matter. I can't help it if it's a borderline chupacabra / area 51 / bigfoot sensation here, too.

BHK got me a bag of creme de menthe Hershey's kisses. A large quantity of them currently reside in my Jonas Green Skull and Crossbones mug.
(Green was a troublemaker. He hated the Stamp Act, which among other things directly taxed his newspaper. Refusing to pay, he halted publication of his paper with the protest headline "The Maryland Gazette Expiring: In Uncertain Hopes of a Resurrection to life again."

In the bottom right corner, he placed a skull and crossbones where the tax stamp should have been.)

They may be my favorite flavor of Hershey's kiss yet. Green foil is an added bonus.

Date night tonight with BHK - we went to DuClaw, and she had a spinach salad, while I ate a pile of bread, cheese and potato-related items.

I've just upgraded to ATi Catalyst suite version 8.1 and now a small white square a few pixels across in the upper left hand corner of the screen - I thought it was stuck pixels at first, but later discovered that it goes away when I remove the Catalyst icon from the system tray.

I'll be interested to see if 8.2 remedies the issue. EDIT: maybe- A white dot no longer appears on the windows desktop when launching the Catalyst Control Center. However, this issue may still be experienced under the Windows XP operating system. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31715

Busy month this go-round. I'll be glad when the bulk of testing and error-correcting passes. It's a pretty thick sheaf of issues to chop down in the next couple of weeks...I'll be glad once the rollout for the new software is complete.

Why things suck - knees and backs. See.. I knew it was a bad idea to walk upright! - quoted below.

Shouldn't evolution have taken care of our blown-out knees and aching backs? Instead, evolution may be to blame; chimps don't tear menisci or herniate discs like we do. It could be that our knees and backs are such a pain because we insist on standing upright. When our ancestors stood up on two feet, they stumbled upon a much more efficient way of walking that uses 75 percent less energy than knuckle-dragging. Over the next several million years, natural selection refined the structural modifications that keep our torso centered over our lower half as we put one foot in front of the other: longer legs, knobby knees, an elongated spine. But those adaptations can be a bit of a kludge.

By stacking the thigh bone directly on top of the shin bone, we've saddled our knees with more weight than they can handle. Even when you're just strolling down the street, the pressure exerted on your knees is three to five times your body weight. During more strenuous activity like running or climbing stairs, it can be double that. By the time you hit 30, the cartilage that distributes your weight across the joint has already begun to wear away. The tissue loss may eventually lead to osteoarthritis, and the shin and thigh bones will begin to rub against each other. This so-called wear-and-tear arthritis sends about 5.5 million people to doctors every year.

The same thing happens to our vertebrae, which weren't designed to sit on top of each other in one weight-bearing column. With time, the cushions between the bones lose some of their spring, and then one day, as you lift a grocery bag or slump in your chair, a disc can bulge out of place. Pain, numbness, and spasms result because the disc is now pressing on a nerve that connects your spinal cord to the rest of your body. More than 80 percent of working Americans will suffer from back pain that's severe enough to limit their activity at some point during their careers.

Surgery is just a temporary fix for our anatomical woes. After a decade, replacement cartilage can wear away, too. But we can't blame all of our aches on design flaws. The fact that we spend so much time hunched over a keyboard — level 70 World of Warcraft players, are you listening? — can't be good. It might help if we all got up off our highly evolved duffs more often.

Bill O'Reilly - You have no idea what you're talking about. I've been homeless, and I can surely tell you that there *are* homeless vets out there. Talk to some of these guys.

Dreamt of the boardwalk coming to life like a Japanese Umbrella Monster. Why? Now I wonder how many 100-year old things are in the house. I'm guessing not much, save for a few books and coins.

Well, I'm happily married, so the career gets the reboot!

Aww.. I love him. Maybe BHK will let me have one, if we get a duck and a llama.

Variant route to work this morning - left a little late, got off at fort trotten, and took r2 in... got to work by 8:15, well before my preferred deadline of 8:30.

Came home, had subway subs and watched The Ex, and the finaled of Spidey 3. Spidey wasn't as bad as  I'd heard, the third time around.. the Ex was pretty formula, and didn't do a lot for me, but it was nice getting together with family and hanging out.

Friday 5 via eryx_uk -

1. Where do you like to walk?

Anywhere! I like people-watching, architecture and nature-watching.. I prefer a reasonably hazard-free surface in a comfy climate. The woods, cityscape and boardwalk are all great.

2. What does your hair look like?

Currently cut short, brown, with bits of red, gray, black and blonde tossed in for good measure. Thinning some on top, more gray being tossed in daily - plentiful enough on arms, legs and etc.

3. What are you jealous of?

I'm not a very jealous person these days.

4. What kind of promises do you make?

The kind I plan on keeping... I rarely promise anything.

5. What makes you stare?

When my mind drifts, I tend to lock onto a location in space and stare at it... I'm prone to gaze deeply at anything that would attract a magpie or a monkey. Shiny stuff, moving trees in the wind, an unusual color amongst the grays.

Chris played hooky today, so I got a later ride in to work with BHK... an extra span of sleep does a world of good.

Work - solid. lots of testing, meetings planned.

After work, BHK picked me up, and we went to go see the 7pm showing of Juno at Annapolis.

There was no 7pm showing at Annapolis, despite what yahoo movies says.

So, we got tickets for the 8:20 show, did a little clothes shopping for BHK (got a new top and hat), then went to dinner at red robin (I got teriyaki pinapple veggie burger - bhk got the same with critter burger.) Bottomless steak fries are good, but only served up in tiny portions at a time.

Wandered around the hiking trail shop - looked at kayaks and bikes. Met a friendly salesman, very knowledgeable, and a know-it-all one-upsman. Steve will be who we buy from, should we come back, not the KIA.

I'm looking forward to warmer weather and heading out on the water.

Saw Juno - It was quite good, despite the overwritten "super-hip/ironic" dialogue in the first part of the movie. Nice range of characters... some I liked, some I didn't.

Cool little easter eggs in I am Legend. Sadly, I'm boycotting it now, (plus BHK doesn't want to see it either)... Will Smith's a Scientologist?

The Daily News reports:

Will Smith has joined the ranks of Hollywood power players actively recruiting for the Church of Scientology. Big stars traditionally distribute “wrap presents” to crew members after completing a film. His recent gift after wrapping next summer’s comedy “Hancock” was a card good for a personality test at your local Scientology center.

Thanks, but no thanks, Fresh Prince.

Quickie follow-up - We didn't see Juno - Both showings were sold out. Instead we hit Golden Compass. It was visually pleasing - script wise and acting wise, not so much. Ah, well. Sad day when armored polar bears and zeppelins *done right* can't make up for an otherwise poorly paced and poorly acted film.

A reminder - Compass is rated pg-13. Not for little kidlets, despite talking animals. There are some scary and violent moments not suitable for most young kids (or nervous grownups.)

Babysitting Miss Tigger today while the in-laws are off to Marion and Salem - doing some house care and visiting Larry's Folks.

Other than that, we're just taking it easy after I get my shots - Maybe we'll catch Sweeney Todd tomorrow as a matinee?

A meme and then adios for now, dear journal.

Ah! The Weekend at last. Why a 3-day span feels longer than some 5-day ones, I do not know.

Just heading out to dinner and a movie with BHK - Juno is on the agenda, not sure about dinner yet. Most likely Cheeburger2... but California Tortilla, Johnny Rockets and Potbelly are also in the running. I could go for just about anything - looking forward to having a nice slow weekend. In-laws are going out of town, so we'll be peeking in on Miss Tigger. Maybe I'll get a little Wii or Portal time in, and I wouldn't mind doing some exploring with BHK to points outside of our walls, either.

This animated music video was created by 64 Communications students from Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Open-Source Cinema project. The students “rotoscoped 1-3 seconds of video each, over a period of three weeks. (Most of them had never used Flash before.)” The results are fantastic - with a variety of engaging styles in the final product.

They say: “We were inspired by Bob Sabiston’s digital rotoscoping (as seen in Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), and our readings and class discussions about copyright and creativity. (Course textbook: Christine Harold’s OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture.)”

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing again overnight, which can mean danger for the District's homeless population. The city has put out a reminder to call their Hypothermia Shelter Hotline should you spot anyone trying to sleep outside when it's this cold.

By calling 1-800-535-7252, the Shelter Hotline can provide transportation to emergency shelters and distribute items such as blankets, gloves and jackets.

If you live outside the District, Express has compiled a list of numbers to call in Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Arlington County, Fairfax County and Alexandria.

"A DARPA-funded research project at UCLA has wrapped up a set of animal trials testing the effects of inhalation of the brain chemical orexin A, a deficiency of which is a characteristic of narcolepsy. Monkeys were deprived of sleep, and then given a shot of the compound. 'The study ... found orexin A not only restored monkeys' cognitive abilities but made their brains look "awake" in PET scans. Siegel said that orexin A is unique in that it only had an impact on sleepy monkeys, not alert ones, and that it is 'specific in reversing the effects of sleepiness' without other impacts on the brain.' Researchers seem cautious to bill the treatment as a replacement for sleep, as it is not clear that adjusting brain chemistry could have the same physical benefits of real sleep in the long run. The drug is aimed at replacing amphetamines used by drowsy long-haul military pilots, but there would no doubt be large demand for such a remedy thanks to its apparent lack of side-effects."

It's Danny's B-day! My internal schedule set in the 90s tells me that Kat and Pam's aren't too far off. I still picture all of them about a decade ago in my mind, even though I've only seen Danny with any frequency. (Kat once in person and in rare photos, Pam - not at all.)

Only a month until my own Birthday. I'm not feeling too bummed about it being the last year I start with a 3. (at least until I turn 300, I guess!) 39 seems a lot older to me than it feels. Maybe it's due to me being creaky and having back problems going back decades... but I'm not really feeling my age. I see lines around my eyes here and there... I look in the mirror when I brush my teeth and shave, but I don't see an old guy looking back at me. However... I don't see a kid, either. I certainly look a lot older now than when I started this journal in 2000. (and certainly more than in 1996, about 11 years ago here and my face squished against a scanner in '96, too, for that matter. ) Heck, if I have to rewind much more, I may as well link to a non-bearded pic of me from circa 1994, for that matter. Added bonus, Doug Wu and a clean-shaven Danny. Speaking of which - I've started growing a full beard out again, and it stuns me how much salt and pepper is in what was once a brownish-red jaw. I kind of dig it, not from a vanity perspective, but it feels right at this time of year to be a bit more furry.

When is a mid-life crisis supposed to hit? Ah, got it. 46, or thereabouts. Things are really quite good for me these days... Hopefully I won't suffer the same sort of psychological shakeup that some folks have at that time. On the agenda for this year is a more serious focus on health.

Of course, Newton has aged the most since I've started my LJ - First day I had him, back in the day... October of '99 , and About the same time in 07. He's still terribly dapper, and can put on a kitten-face easily when he wants.

BHK and Pye both are babyfaces across the board. I think BHK will be carded for booze when she turns 73.

I would love to make or just have this Beast (Henry McCoy) Sock Monkey. Very Keen!

Of the millions of webcomics out there, I've really only found about 3 that are funny, interesting, or well-drawn. Short of some clever stick figures and more well-rounded stick figures, not much about them thrill me.

I'm wondering when that cottage industry will have a culling period? I suspect never, and that's pretty great. Something for everyone, even if it's just the creator. Something that many critics forget is that they can choose not to read something that they find to be distasteful - or worse, boring. Same goes for podcasts, videos and journals, for that matter.

I didn't do the polar bear swim this year... just didn't seem like much of an event, given how unseasonably warm it was. Of course, today, it's snow weather... Perversely, I'd have done it if the weather was like this yesterday.

Time for a Meme, already? sure, why not? I got 23 out of 37 possible.

The list is based on an exercise developed by Will Barratt, Meagan Cahill, Angie Carlen, Minnette Huck, Drew Lurker, Stacy Ploskonka at Illinois State University. The exercise developers ask that if you participate in this blog game, you acknowledge their copyright.

According to the creators, this is an activity "designed to help the participants gain awareness of the vast range of social class that exists within themselves and others". It was originally done with college students but I think it makes for a very interesting tool that helps me put my own experiences into perspective.

If you post this in your journal, please leave a comment on this post. To participate in this blog game, copy and paste the above list into your blog, and bold the items that are true for you. If you don't have a blog, feel free to post your responses in the comments.

When you were in college:

If your father went to college, take a step forward.
If your father finished college
If your mother went to college
If your mother finished college
If you have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor.
If you were the same or higher class than your high school teachers
If you had a computer at home
If you had your own computer at home
If you had more than 50 books at home
If you had more than 500 books at home
If were read children's books by a parent
If you ever had lessons of any kind
If you had more than two kinds of lessons
If the people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively
If you had a credit card with your name on it
If you have less than $5000 in student loans
If you have no student loans
If you went to a private high school
If you went to summer camp
If you had a private tutor
If you have been to Europe
If your family vacations involved staying at hotels
If all of your clothing has been new and bought at the mall
If your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them
If there was original art in your house
If you had a phone in your room
If you lived in a single family house
If your parent own their own house or apartment
If you had your own room
If you participated in an SAT/ACT prep course
If you had your own cell phone in High School
If you had your own TV in your room in High School
If you opened a mutual fund or IRA in High School or College
If you have ever flown anywhere on a commercial airline
If you ever went on a cruise with your family
If your parents took you to museums and art galleries
If you were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family.

Here is what folks did in a live version, stepping forward for each bolded item :

Now everyone recognize that you are at the same place academically.
Everyone turn around.
Everyone has permission to talk.
No one has permission to accuse any one or any group of anything.
Everyone must use “I” statements.
Note that the people on one end of the room had to work harder to be here today than the people at the other end of the room. Some of you had lives of more privilege than others. There is no one to blame, it is just the way it is. Some have privilege and some don’t.
(this can be said now or later, I don’t know where it will be appropriate)

Discussion:
What were the feelings that you had during this experience? Who was angry?
(Anger will be a primary emotion at this point.)
What, specifically, makes you angry?
Who are you angry at?

Who was happy?

Summary Statement
This experience was about creating awareness of privilege. What it is, what it does, and what it means. Having privilege does not mean that you worked less hard. All it means is that you had a head start, so maybe it does mean you didn’t have to work as hard . . . .

Homework
During the next week notice how your high school years helped or didn’t help your experience in school/at work . . . .

Explanations and Notes:
All of the step taking was about things not requiring effort on the students’ part, that were things done by others.

Hump-day. Somehow, I can't get the mental picture of dozens of Käpylehmät out of my head. Cone-cows for everyone! Color me spoiled, but I'm glad I've got a Wii, a boatload of boardgames, and BHK to play them all with! Come to think of it, maybe she'd like a pine cone duck / llama / puggle for the holidays. This doesn't look like any puggle I've seen.

That said, maybe Pye and Newt would like to play with a few pine cones.... I'll see what I can round up.

Secret Santa Day at work! I got a $20 gamestop card, a gumdrop penguin, and a candy cane! Thanks, Mystery Kringle! I suspect that'll be a hefty piece of Mario Galaxy or some other swell game.

BHK and I are just taking it easy tonight... hitting the sack early, too - just as soon as she's done on the phone with Misti. Apparently Bugah has poor faith about Santa, but they don't really talk about it. That's a bummer... hopefully the holiday spirit will still prevail.

"The Tunguska event, an explosion on June 30, 1908, cleared an 800-sq.-mi. swath of Siberian forest. Was it a UFO crash? An alien weapons test? Now, Sandia National Laboratories has released its own explanation for the Tunguska event. Using supercomputers to create a 3D simulation of the explosion, the Department of Energy-funded nuke lab has determined that Tunguska was, indeed, the explosion of a relatively small asteroid. The simulation videos are well worth checking out — they show a fireball slamming into the earth from the asteroid's air burst. The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking."

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. (Some I know too well. You know who you are.) I read your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." I might feel compelled to mock your musical taste, but I'll certainly remember you.

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

Tomorrow is the Christmas party at work. I wonder what the following week before vacation is going to be like? I suspect it'll mostly be business as usual.

Got BHK David DeBoy's Crabs for Christmas CD... gave it to her early... as a cd of christmas music on christmas day has a very limited shelf-life. (At least until next year) She was more than delighted - it really is pretty much "Our" holiday song, after all.

The other songs on the CD are pretty groovy, too. I was a little worried it might be a lot of filler, but the tunes are a lot of fun - especially if you're a Marylander.

Found out how to add everyone on my lj friends page to an rss reader directly... That's pretty dang handy.

"The board members essentially approved a plan offered in recent days by Maryland members that lessens the impact on suburban and long-distance riders. That plan followed a public hearing that drew more than 400 comments from riders, many of whom said that proposed fare and fee hikes were too high and not merited by metro's unreliable service."

Friday 5 -

1. Are you married?

Yup! BHK all the way! :D

2. When do your claws come out?

When people I love are seriously threatened. (Including me!)

3. Have you ever been in a car accident?

More than one! I've been the passenger all times but one, though.

4. Who is the last person you held?

BHK, and she was holding Pye at the time! (Newt was curled up next to my leg. Love fest!)

5. Describe a time you've gone overboard:
Hard to recall... I fell out of a canoe once, back when I was 17 or 18, trying to woo a gal by moonlight. That never panned out for me.

Hmm... I'm surprised this wifi sensing t-shirt only goes to XXL... they've got to know that geeks are prone to running larger than that. It's a pretty cool thing... I wouldn't mind having that woven into a laptop bag or a pda pouch.

After work, I got with BHK and we grabbed a little nibble at *$. Also got her a pre-christmas present, glittery green coffee travel mug... it eased the day a bit, given the assorted annoyances of the day brought earlier in the forms of Condo, Health Care, Bar, Bills and so on. Amazing what a little hot tea and milk will do to ease the mind. We eventually toddled home to a light supper and and early bedtime.

A study from Mental Health America ranks the most depressed states in America. Here they are, ranked from happiest to saddest. (via fallentoad)

The study ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on rates of depression and suicide. Researchers found that states with easier access to mental health resources had lower suicide rates. (see also - Smaller babies grow up to be sadder adults / Study links low birth rate to depression, anxiety later in life)

Highlighted below are places I've spent the majority of my formative years, plus my current setting of Maryland.

1. South Dakota

2. Hawaii

3. New Jersey

4. Iowa

5. Maryland

Lowest

47. Nevada

48. Rhode Island

49. Kentucky

50. West Virginia

51. Utah

We're number 5!

I know I'm a lot happier in Maryland than I was in Florida, but that environment could travel with me anywhere, and I'd feel better.... just as long as I have BHK, Pye and Newt along for the ride.

Depression is a serious medical illness that comes in many forms with a variety of symptoms.
If you have any of the following symptoms for a prolonged period, it may be time to seek help.

  1. Persistent sad or anxious mood
  2. Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  3. Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  4. Loss of interest in hobbies or activities
  5. Fatigue or decreased energy
  6. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  7. Insomnia or oversleeping
  8. Changes in appetite or weight
  9. Thoughts of death or suicide
  10. Restlessness or irritability
  11. Headaches or chronic pain

Of the above, I tend meet the qualifications from number 6 (not so much), 10 and 11, though I don't think that I suffer from depression, rather, physical issues are causing them.

Speaking of which, I went to the doc for a reviewing of the back situation. Aside from the standard "eat better, exercise more" bit, there wasn't much else to report just yet. I make an appointment for an MRI tomorrow.

A year away from ACIM. Who'd have thought it? Good to have moved on, though I'm very proud of the good I accomplished while I was there.

I'm so thankful that I'm here now... I have a loving family, some nice local friends, a good job... let alone the default things like a roof over my head, regular feedings and the ability to read!

To hear BHK and me gobbling, listen to last year's holiday entry.

Ze has a good talk about thanks, from a year ago.

Off to the in-laws with BHK... she prepared a quorn "turkey" roast, veggies, cake, stuffing, and all manner of goodness. I don't know how it could possibly beat the shepherds pie she made for me last night, but if anyone can do it, she can. I'm truly blessed to be married to such a warm, loving, beautiful, brilliant woman who can cook, too!

Baconsalt - Our mission in life is to make everything taste like real, delicious bacon, without the fat or calories. (Vegetarian friendly!) I like that they call themselves "Bacontrepreneurs"

I tend to agree with Mr. Fry's assessment about Americans (as opposed to folks in the UK) and debate. Just because I disagree with you, it's not an attack on you, personally. (Scroll down to "Getting Overheated).

Newtnewtie and Pyepyecam1 have been activenewtcam ... BHK sent me samples of lunchtime travels.

I'm glad Newtcam continues to get a good workout!

They're getting more and more tolerant and friendly with one another - see below.

Just because someone isn't on my "friends list" here on LJ, it doesn't mean I'm not reading other ones... I wonder why folks are so surprised when I comment on something that they wrote and I don't auto link them? There are a lot of reasons not to... maybe I don't want them reading my "friend's only" posts... or maybe they write so often that it floods out my aggregator. Or Maybe I'm just nosy, and want to peek in on random people from time to time, rather than every day.

Very little. Maybe $.045? I'm overdue to hit the ol' ATM

3. What's a word that rhymes with "DOOR?"
Score!

Earth works best for me... excluding the obvious, I like Uranus, because it has a sideways axis, rings, and is a childish word-joke for some folks.

5. Who is the 4th person on your missed call list on your cell phone?
Larry, about a week ago. Probably trying to call me re:dinner plans.

6. What is your favorite ring on your phone?

Supper at La Tolteca tonight... not so great. Flavorless beans, lackluster chips and salsa... enchiladas were blah. The Potato & Onion Burrito was pretty good, as were the spinach-veggie thingies, but it was a no go. The decor of Meso-American Indians performing sacrifices had far more flavor than the food.
