HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BHK!!

Allison's B'day! I buttered her nose while she was distracted by playing audiosurf. (Got it for $5 this last weekend.) I was a little disappointed that my mp3 of Christopher Walken reciting Poe's "The Raven" was so linear.

As a gift / party-favor to all for BHK's day - A GAZILLION Free to print and play games.

Oh BGG, how I thank the Internets you're there.

If you're not into free games, (or even if you are, dear journal) here's a stop-motion zombie movie called Chainsaw Maid. Best zombie film this year. (from the same people who did Bloody Date )

No Lebanese Taverna Tonight - Falafel time must wait - instead we hit Gallo's Deli - food is still pretty good. Not as superior as Selby, but only a block or two from the house. BHK opened the remainder for her loot tonight.

I got her an assortment of little trinket-treats - My faves were earring-studs in the style of mexican sugar skulls and a bottlecap pin with a pirate inside saying ARG in letter beads.... but I'm partial to things skully. I need to take a picture of BHK's loot pile - other items were a lovey charm, a ouija board pin, and a horde of coupons to do / get things, from getting me in a good mood to a movie night with no snarky comments. (2 nights, if neither are Jane Austen-related).

1 year ago - BHK Bday, (buttered via nightstand dollop), lots of bayfest food and heat, parade, spidey lunchbox, tarot test

2 years ago - robo-post while I'm on vaykay with BHK, dragonfly-kitty pic

3 years ago - google talk, web-surfing, Katrina, Robertson apologizes, v05-blueberry, medieval career, book meme, palm doodle, weather, power-out phone post

4 years ago - bag lady update, Twilight Zone: Planet of the Apes

5 years ago - got bro a Ganesh, (but I skipped the digeridoo), law and order coloring book, first day at new gig as good server king of the south, gabbed with mi Hala re: jhumkas and moonstones, and happy thoughts of working with her, Shal'weez.

6 years ago - heroclix improvised weapons, deadly toys, poemtag

7 years ago - pirate joke, selectivity, amor, warning label poll

8 years ago - aliens operate on my body, rhymes, colors, stevie Geotarget

120 years ago - A plant grows in Mexteca, Mexico, which the natives call the "herb of prophecy." A dose of it produces sleep similar in all respects to the hypnotic state. The subject answers with closed eyes all questions that are put to him, and is completely insensible. The pathologic state brings with it a kind of prophetic gift and doublesight. Furthermore he loses his will and is completely under the control of another. On returning to himself he remembers nothing of what he has done. -Excelsior Cottager, August 25, 1888.

Larry’s Birthday – He made pancakes for us all… Tigger nearly escaped the house, and is now no longer allowed on the porch.. purely an indoor kitty.

BHK made a lemon cake, an we gave him a lemon meringue pie and tickets to the bluegrass festival. (and the first three lethal weapon movies on dvd)

Adam brought a keen gift of fridge and microwave combo for his workshop… and stocked it with 5 cases of soda and water.

After the get-together, BHK and I headed home to get some rest… I think we fell asleep on the couch within moments of landing there. We were awakened by neighbor Daniel (10) at the door, wanting to visit and gab because he was bored. We talked a lot about social topics a 10 year old might have, like school, movies etc. – Buckaroo Banzai was on, mute dint the background, and was an interesting juxtaposition of listening to the little guy gab.

He eventually went home, and we had sloppy joes and garlic fries for supper – super yummy.

Danny and Mom phoned… or I phoned them, I forget which. I think I called Danny, the momster called me. Just general catching up, both are doing ok.

Autumn is coming… that’s when BHK gets her pumpkin eyes.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ADAM!!

0720081450.jpg

BHK managed to grease Adam's nose, with a minimum of struggle. total surprise. We watched The Seeker: The Dark is Rising -(not bad, but seemed more than a little "Mary Sue"-ish, even for a fantasy movie. Christopher Eccleston was totally misused in the film. I know he can act, I've seen it.) and re-watched National Treasure 2. (BHK and Adam really like the sequel... while I like the first, the second fell a bit flat for me.... I am looking forward to the next one.)

Chips and dip, Hot dogs and corn on the cob for all, with a confetti-birthday cake, yellow cake with whipped white icing and sprinkles. It was devoured before a photograph could be recorded. I fear we may soon grow weary of hot dogs, but I'm doing OK so far. In-laws left at about 6, and Adam at 7. We hit the sack pretty early again tonight.. need to recharge the batteries for tomorrow.

We gave Adam coupons for his birthday, as we couldn't find anything his size that was something special.

Coupons included:

  • 1 use - Get out of being nagged by BHK Free. (He almost had to use it re: cigar smoking on special occasions.)
  • Hug from Pyewacket (renewable)
  • Headbutt from Newt (renewable)
  • 1 full tank of gas (please to use before it gets higher than $10 a gallon, and no more than 18 gallons - (his car holds 12))
  • Girl advice from either a girl (BHK) or a Boy (me) or both - he is not obligated to take said advice.
  • free trip to the drive in
  • free pizza night!
  • emergency help, anytime he needs it.

Friday! Weekend! Yahooties!

Cathy's Yard Sale Preview went well. We got 3 bookshelves, confirmed out swap of the china cabinet for the huge red sectional, and got a few additional bits of loot - rechargable candle lights, a pizza stone for the oven, a cooler bag.

Farmers Market Dinner was awesome - I had a veggie-meatloaf sammich with cheese, garden veggies and bread & butter pickles. a meal fit for a king. dessert was pound cake with vanilla ice cream and fresh raspberries. All while Watching O Brother Where Art Thou?

Life is good.

This site lets you track the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle (when in orbit), and all sorts of other satellites in relation to their position over the earth with a familiar Google Maps interface. Very cool.

"...even if tomorrow we opened up every square mile of the outer Continental Shelf to offshore rigs, even if we drilled the entire state of Alaska and pulled new refineries out of thin air, the impact on gas prices would be minimal and delayed at best. A 2004 study by the government's Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that drilling in ANWR would trim the price of gas by 3.5 cents a gallon by 2027."

Forgot to post this yesterday -

ATW man Crabbing.

First thing we did today was view Swarm of the Snakehead at 1 am, when BHK woke from her Pizza Hut induced torpor "nap".

We weren't disappointed. Swarm of the Snakehead was exactly what we were looking for (and didn't get) when we went to see Grindhouse. A fun, cheesy, "bad in a good way" sort of horror flick. It's most certainly more a comedy film than horror, despite the periodic moments of gore. I'd love to see this on a large screen somewhere, or better yet as a movie shown outside, on the beach... maybe projected on the side of a large white building.

Head and shoulders above any other made for Sci-fi channel stuff, ten pound would likely do quite well to shop the film to them, or a similar venue.

I may be a bit biased, because it was filmed right nearby, primarily in Easton and Oxford - a hoot picking out local spots.

I can't believe that Gunnar Hansen was both Leatherface and the "Quint from Jaws"-style Fisherman! There's range for you!

I think I'll write up a much longer and nicer review of the movie soon - I want to get some input from BHK about her perspective on the film, too. I'd say it was the highlight of our weekend, though.

After the delightful midnight movie with BHK, we tucked back into bed, and snoozed... I'd say we got up and out of the house by 11ish.

Polished off the last of the croissants from the farmer's market (I had chocolate, she had almond), BHK decided to venture forth to Aardvark and grab our waiting games. Mike and Tara were out, but the employees were swell to us.

The day was gorgeous and since we wer euntethered by any other family responsibilities (in-laws took tigger to Salem for a long weekend), we meandered around Southern Maryland, looking for a nice new spot to grab some lunch and just enjoy each other's company.

After much tooling around of St. Mary's, we eventually ended up at the Reluctant Navigator. After eating there, I understand his reluctance. The food was somewhere between meh and ok. Service, not bad - environment when we first walked in the door was "we've made a terrible mistake" but after getting past the foyer filled with old boat motors, chainsaws, and crab traps covered in dust, the clean dining area changed our tune to "oh, this is probably all right." I'd put the food at medium-low quality. somewhere in the 3-5 out of 10 range. I seriously doubt that we'll be back, unless something amazing causes us to return.

We continued on our journey, with food in our bellies - after putting some petrol in the tank, we wandered into Cecil's Old Mill, a general store and post office - pictures to follow sometime after I upload 'em. Meanwhile, check out what somd online has to offer. When I saw the logs in place, I had two thoughts. first - that's perfect for an old movie villian to strap a maiden to, and let the hero try to save her while he gets away. The second was the gravity gun usage in last night's HL2.

The old post office was my favorite, though. Lots of memorabilia everywhere.

We bought a pair of homemade brownies and a diet pepsi, and toddled on home, to water our plants right before a huge, thunder-filled rainstorm.

We had tasty sammiches for dinner, and watched our last tivo'ed Monk - where he reunites with his pop. Not a bad character dev show, but a lousy mystery solution. "We found the tie!"

Now, bedtime. Gnitght, dear journal. Have some lovely linkies.

Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds Barbie Doll

Just so you know that your family isn't so bad, dear journal -

'Cannibal relatives ate boy alive'

A seven-year-old boy was kept chained in a closet as relatives hacked off pieces of his flesh to eat, a court has heard.

In a case with echoes of the Fritzl family horror in Austria, Ondrej Mauerova was partially skinned in the closet in a cellar at his home in Kurim near Brno, in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

The abuse – involving members of a religious cult – was uncovered by chance last May when a neighbour's television baby monitor picked up graphic pictures of what was happening next door.

Ondrej and his nine-year-old brother Jakub were locked and chained in the cellar for months by their mother Klara, 31 – a member of a group called the Grail Movement.

He was caged, beaten and gagged to stop him screaming, according to reports.

Mauerova had the monitor installed so that she could watch the abuse from her kitchen but the images were picked up by a neighbour who used an identical system to monitor a newborn baby, the regional court in Brno has heard.

Police were called and the two boys as well as what appeared to be a 13-year-old girl were freed.

But the girl later turned out to have been one of the alleged abusers, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova.

She subsequently fled to Norway before being brought back to the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Mauerova has admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by Skrlova and her own sister Katerina.

The accused are Klara Mauerova, her sister Katerina, 34; Barbora Skrlova, 33; her brother Jan Skrla and a friend Jan Turek.

cranky - I'm a sensitive / moody boy today -

slept a lot

watched finale of the office - nice closer.

played with newton and pye - frog on a string, mostly

I was more cranky - discovered that it's primarily due to fears about health - back issues and surgery, especially. BHK helps me figure out why.

showered

went to mexico for dinner

wal-mart for after - got a happy, friendly galactus & human torch,(on discount, no less) bhk got a bubble baton

also - green and yellow t-shirts, socks, animal crackers, kitty litter.

came home

relaxed and watched our last psych - first season long missing tim curry / american idol episode

watched the soup

watched fruit carving

went to bedski, not cranky now.

Garage sale across the down today after shots... Our first blush on the way to the doctor wasn't that successful.. saw old clothes and lots of little bits of junk here and there. Quickie lunch at Mexico and then back to the town to shop.

Our hope was to find some good furniture - nothing amazing really stood out. BHK asked what I'd want to see at my ideal yard sale... my response was a mummified monkey head, some old heathkit robots maybe, and maybe a retired super-scientist's collection of prototype death rays and forcefield belts.

What we did was pick up a few dvds, more than a couple of "chick lit" books, wall art, a teaching chess set, two toy robots and A ROBOT MONKEY !

We didn't spend more than $20 total for the lot - The 'bots were the bulk of the cost, at $4.50 each. Puzzles were a quarter, dvds a buck a pop, and books were a big bundle for $3.

Came home, chilled out and enjoyed BHK's nom nom nommy thai cabbage soup.

Forgot to mention that yesterday also heralded the arrival of our blue robot boy to pair up with our pink robot hula girl. The girl is cuter, but they make a fine little dancing pair.

Presents sent in the mail, when taxes were launched on Tuesday - Eryx's Christmas Prezzie is only about 4 months late! Ah well, we got it sent out.. .and Danny's treat will get to him shortly too. hopefully the loot will brighten their days.

Sending good thoughts to all friends in the dumps, too. If you're not feeling so hot... cheery thoughts to you.

I'm tempted to get BHK and / or Chris Pink T-shirts that read "HYPERBOLE IS THE BEST THING EVER!"

BHK made tasty, tasty meatball-type substance in bbq sauce, with sides of garlic-y yum broccoli.

The Tiki Bar in Solomons Island will be opening this weekend for 2008. I guess pope traffic wasn't enough! I guess we'll stick to less congested realms... maybe we can hit the eastern shore and lurk around the marine museum after my shots on Saturday.

Maybe check out some local farmers markets? (now that it's season.. thanks for the hint, DCist!)

I just remembered to look this up - Sarcastic vs Sardonic

sarcastic = a cutting or ironic remark
sardonic = scornful or mocking

Trees- Vandalised trees reoriented, creating new landscapes and giving the trees a new reality.

Speaking of DCist - want to see the pope's snappy red shoes ? ( I also dig the "We Love Our German Shepherd" sign.)

I didn't realise that the rerelease of Tally Hall's album has a few new tracks on it - I'll have to see if I can chase down Mucka Blucka and Dream as MP3s, or snag 'em from Itunes.

[edit - THANK YOU for the drop of the music! :D]

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Two 19th century rhino horns stolen from a South African museum could be deadly if sold as a popular aphrodisiac because they are drenched in poison, a museum official said on Monday.

The "priceless" horns were snatched from a display at the historic mammal gallery in Cape Town on Saturday evening, said Jatti Bredekamp, chief executive of Iziko Museums.

"Unknowingly, the thieves have exposed themselves to more than the danger of arrest and prosecution," Bredekamp said in a statement.

"Before the mid-twentieth century, taxidermy mounts were prepared by being soaked in arsenic and preserved from insect infestation through regular applications of DDT, both highly toxic poisons that retain their toxicity over time," he said.

Bredekamp said the horns were deliberately targeted in a carefully planned robbery, and might be destined for Asia, where ground rhino horns are a prized aphrodisiac.

"This could have unforeseen consequences," he said.

Rhino populations have fallen dramatically over the last few decades as poaching decimated the animals across Africa.

Bredekamp said museums worldwide were being targeted by organized crime to help supply lucrative markets with a wide range of artifacts. After a previous robbery attempt, South African museum officials removed several other specimens of rhino horn from public display, he said.

scottobear: (travels - where the road leads)
Quite the journey today - We put the March in Ides of March!

We slept in, but got to the doc's in time for my shots and BHK's draw. After the requisite needle sticks, we launched ourselves toward the Eastern Shore once again - original intent of going to Baltimore for the Aquarium was sidelined for a day that maybe we can bring Adam along with us and I've got a non-cellphone camera.

Plan #2 was to go to St. Michael's, now that season has started - check out the marine museum there, and have a spot of supper at the Crab Claw.

Those plans were stymied by a hand-stenciled sign marked "Flea Market Next Left". With a quick mutual nodding of our heads, BHK and I changed course - we meandered through the building, fairly impressed. There was an oven cooking up hot dogs at the front door, along with plates of baked goods... mostly brownies and blueberry-muffin bars. Tools of all sorts, used books, some nifty antiques, too. BHK snapped up a phonebook-thick book of vegetarian recipes for $2, a keen jadeite set of salt and pepper shakers (not antique, but tres cool for $10, and I snagged a blueberry bar for a measly buck. (I almost got a blue-cobalt glass mr. peanut jar, but discretion worked for me. I really had no place to put it.) Fortunately the Salt-shaker guy took checks. (He said that he took credit cards too, but didn't give 'em back.)

We left with our treasures, happy as a couple of proverbial clams, and continued toward St. Mike's. Mid-journey, I realized that it was already nearly 3pm, and I remembered the museum closed at 4.. and we were pretty dang hungry - ready to eat now rather than later. - So, a second trip to general tanukis, then! Not as fantastic as the first time, sushi-wse, but still a fine place to land for lunch. Grilled Cheese was tasty, but the home made french fries would've been awesome if they weren't quite so limp.

After a satisfying meal - we stretched our legs a bit. I got to visit the bunker, and picked up a couple of stickfas - supervillain and spaceman. (marked at 20% off of $10 each) Armed with toys, I was ready for a little more shopping with BHK... we sniffed around a few boutiques, and at a place called La de da, she got a green hair band with and assortment of rhinestones in it - we though tit was $16, but rang up as $6 at the register... score! We continued through a yarn store with a cute yorkie working there as a greeter, a large pet shop, and then came upon crackerjacks toy store... that's my kind of place. We got a few little wind-up critters - BHK got a tiki drummer (drums are a triceratops and tyrannosaur skulls), a pink hula-robot - and I got walking neon green monkey the plays the cymbals.

Happy in our purchases, we began our journey home... we were going to get together with the in-laws tonight to watch becoming Jane, but they weren't in the mood - so we side-tracked into annapolis to see Be Kind, Rewind. It stopped playing there, so we caught In Bruges. I liked it more than BHK - she scored it slightly below average (a 4/10) while I skewed just the other side (6/10).

The corn is always the best part of movies at the bowtie theater... dialogue with the candy-counter gang was fun... you could see each stereotype pretty clearly. The blonde bubbly girl who likes chick flicks, the lumbering oaf guy that enjoyed hanging out with the girls, and the brounette chick who is the big fan of british stuff, black comedy, more pseudo-sullen than the others.

The pic below was at one of the boutiques... the first meeting place for Maryland Freemasons, now selling frou-frou chic stuff to tourists.

Archaeologists in Greece have discovered the 1800-year-old skull of a young woman who may have undergone primitive brain surgery. An alternate theory says she injured her skull when she suddenly realized she could have had a V-8. Whenever I see the word skull these days, I think Skrull.

Standard morning - good ol' allergy shots. BHK noted that the reception area was more flirty with me than usual... I didn't think so, but I got teased by the Mrs. all the way to Maerten's, where we finally got BHK her engagement ring... 16 months after we got married! I'm happy that the designs worked out as well as they did.... The gang there were very good about the whole development process, and are always wonderful to work with. Jamie and Heather were especially caring and diligent throughout. Kudos to them!

see Dandelion Wine, chapters 28-29.

Chapter 28-29 (The Swan) — Bill Forrester, with Douglas at his side, orders lime-vanilla ice at the soda fountain. His unusual request catches the attention of ninety-five year old Helen Loomis who invites him to visit her house tomorrow. Bill complies, and he and Helen start a friendly conversation about the appearances people keep up for each other, that soon diverges into Loomis acting as a "Time Machine" similar to Colonel Freeleigh to transport Bill into the pyramids of Egypt . Bill comments on how comfortable he feels talking to her, and Helen replies by reminding him that she's only an old woman. While lounging in his chair, Bill attempts to envision her as being young again; he succeeds for a moment in seeing "the swan," which he unintentionally says out loud, strangely disquieting Helen.

Bill continues to visit Helen every day for two and a half weeks, but only on the last day does he tell her what motivated him to visit her in the first place: a photograph taken of her when she was twenty. He had seen the picture in the newspaper for the town ball and intended to go to the ball to seek the beautiful girl it showed, until someone told him that the picture had been taken a long time ago and had been used by the newspaper every year since then to advertise the ball. Helen replies with an overview of a young man she once knew in her youth who was handsome but wild and reckless; he left her, but when she saw Bill at the fountain that day, she was strongly reminded of him — almost as if he was a reincarnation of her former companion.

Some time later, Bill finds Helen writing a letter addressed to him. Helen explains to him that she will be dead in a few days, and that the letter she is writing will come to him then. When Bill attempts to protest about the lack of time they have had together, Helen says that she believes that they will meet again sometime later — possibly in reincarnated forms. She tells him to marry and live happily, but says that he has to die before the age of fifty in order to ensure that when they are reincarnated, they will be of the correct ages and be able to meet and fall in love with each other.

Two days later, Bill receives the letter. Inside it is a note reading, "A dish of lime-vanilla ice."

BHK and I timed it right.

My turn to get some goodies... we stopped off to pick up some comics at aardvark - noticed they have a lot of treehouse and a more looney labs games in stock. I picked up showcase presents - justice league of america (eyed metamorpho, and ordered jonah hex ) , new abe sapien mini series, devi for bhk, all star superman #8 w/ zibarro

Stopped off at Mexico on the way home for some veggie taquitos, and full as happy little ticks, we rolled home in order to spend much of the rest of the day in bed, reading comics and snuggled up under the covers with the kitties.

Visited the in-laws for a moment to show off the ring and just say howdy...They were going to come over later for supper, but never made it. We'll catch up with 'em tomorrow.

About 6-7pm, I got notice that the conversion to the new software at work had gone through, so I spent a few hours making sure elements were up to snuff for monday... I'm going to review it more tomorrow morning, but it was nice to get the bulk of it out of my hair this early. Sooner it's looked at, the sooner the problem spots can be removed - or so the theory goes.

Well, the Patriots lost, but I really don't follow football. Too bad about them not having a perfect run, though.

Had tasty taco salads for belated birthday dinner tonight... quite yummy! BHK and I are mending up nicely - spent a goodly chunk of the day resting and watching America's Cutest Puppy and then Puppy Bowl IV - I did enjoy the Kitty "halftime show". Apparently, I'm a giant softie. Pye was equally fascinated to watch the real super bowl, (took some photos - to follow), so I don't feel too bad.

Birthday cake was even better than it looked - dark chocolate with white frosting. Nom.

First Present was a box of chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons from BHK by way of the cakery yummo.

Still sickly, so I spent the bulk of today in bed, resting after getting back from my allergy shots. BHK is bouncing back much more rapidly than I am. Big day out will be next weekend, most likely. Heading to Baltimore's National Aquarium and maybe the B&O railroad museum, if Larry comes along.

Dinner of tasty veggie meatball subs and baked potato - nom nom nom

Birthday cake is dark chocolate, with white icing... and gummi green army men fighting to the top! Pictures to follow as available.

Presents from Kev-o: Godzilla Cartoon - Vol 1, Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales, and Family Guy: Blue Harvest goodie sets.

From Mom& Wilton - $50 Barnes and Noble Gift card.

I get to cut the cake and open my other presents tomorrow! Superbowl Sunday... I'm in a pool, but I really don't follow football, even if my home team of the Patriots are playing.

BHK buttered my nose sneakily on a sneak behind this morning, after a failed attempt to get my beak while I was showering.

It's Robb's birthday today, too... I hope he's having a dandy one as well! Happy Un-birthday to everyone else!

Oh, come on.. the voice of Bart Simpson is a Scientology supporter, too?

Ugh and yuck. Recent donation list.

I'm still trying to figure out how Kirstie Alley can afford a $5 mil donation.

I wonder if there will come a time where I boycott all movies because money is going to that organization. Dang Scientology.

Diet Chocolate Cherry Dr. Pepper.... My Closest approximation? It tastes like you're drinking a chocolate tootsie pop. Not really Chocolaty... oddly synthetic. Cherry Vanilla wins far and above over this, but it's an interesting variation. Still better than that "Berries and Creme" variant, that I'm not missing at all. Jone's Chocolate Fudge soda is better, but not much.

Yesterday, I played the demo version of Bioshock for the PC while BHK read her book after dinner. Very cool designs and vibe... my only complaint is how some of the splicers look - and that's a really small complaint. Beats watching the state of the Union Address.

Downright scary game with a pretty keen storyline and set of game-play traits. I'll probably pick it up after polishing off the Orange box.

In other news, somebody developed a free Apples to Apples online game ! That could be a lot of fun.... I'll have to invite all my A2A pals to a session. I like that you can contribute new cards. [edit - join me in game 92 - password is the name of a particular orange cat!]

Cough is worse today, went home an hour and a half early. If it keeps up, I'm probably not going to make it in tomorrow.

Spent the day just lounging and folding laundry - Watched 95% of Tin Man... not terrible, not great. I think the 6 hours could've been boiled down to 2-3 really good hours.  Something that probably looked cool on the storyboards, but implemented a little weakly.

The only thing we did today was go out and get the mail... nice grab - Kev got me the 4 DVD "final edition / directors cut / us / euro release" set for Blade Runner, and Misti & Co. hooked us up with a $50 gift certificate to Aardvark's - our friendly neighborhood gaming/comic shop.

Polar Bear Plunge will still happen, unless it gets *really* cold by Tuesday morning.

BHK and I are recovering well from the visits of my Mom and Wilton... it's fun to host folks, but it's also nice for some alone-time too.

I'll be slowly catching up with last week's entries - so much happening that I've not had too much time to document the events.

Hump-day. Somehow, I can't get the mental picture of dozens of Käpylehmät out of my head. Cone-cows for everyone! Color me spoiled, but I'm glad I've got a Wii, a boatload of boardgames, and BHK to play them all with! Come to think of it, maybe she'd like a pine cone duck / llama / puggle for the holidays. This doesn't look like any puggle I've seen.

That said, maybe Pye and Newt would like to play with a few pine cones.... I'll see what I can round up.

Secret Santa Day at work! I got a $20 gamestop card, a gumdrop penguin, and a candy cane! Thanks, Mystery Kringle! I suspect that'll be a hefty piece of Mario Galaxy or some other swell game.

BHK and I are just taking it easy tonight... hitting the sack early, too - just as soon as she's done on the phone with Misti. Apparently Bugah has poor faith about Santa, but they don't really talk about it. That's a bummer... hopefully the holiday spirit will still prevail.

"The Tunguska event, an explosion on June 30, 1908, cleared an 800-sq.-mi. swath of Siberian forest. Was it a UFO crash? An alien weapons test? Now, Sandia National Laboratories has released its own explanation for the Tunguska event. Using supercomputers to create a 3D simulation of the explosion, the Department of Energy-funded nuke lab has determined that Tunguska was, indeed, the explosion of a relatively small asteroid. The simulation videos are well worth checking out — they show a fireball slamming into the earth from the asteroid's air burst. The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking."

Solid sleep, but I woke up once in the middle of the night - maybe that's why I can recall my dream so readily today. Dreamt that I was living in a haunted house - hanged bodies in varying states of decay kept appearing on the porch. Some of the skulls were certainly not human... more bovine or ursine, depending. I would throw them away, or burn them out in the yard, but the following day, more would be there.

I kept the noose rope, spooling it into a large ball in the back yard, hoping to make the place a roadside attraction. I don't know why reappearing bodies wouldn't be enough. For whatever dream-reason, I spun the rope to the tune of Stick Shifts & Safety Belts (Which is still lodged in my head... 16 hours or more later.)

Rather than come for the huge ball of twine, visitors did start to come, due to the delicious smell of charred carcasses. I don't know why feeding the bodies to visiting people felt OK, but it was guilt-free... my attitude was "hey, they were just hanging there... like selling fruit from my apple tree."

Top 20 Logical Fallacies - When in a debate, I'm often guilty of abusing reductio ad absurdum (#14).

This morning on the way to work - still a few autumn colors out there.

I hear through the grapevine that one of my old places of business is in a pretty big tangle. Eight people have turned over in a year's time there. When one considers that they only have 14 positions, five of them part-time and not all 14 existed for that full year, that's a sure sign of a problem.

Speaking of Grapes... DIET GRAPE AT GIANT HAS RETURNED!!

AT LAST! IT HAS RETURNED!

The only grape soda that I actively enjoy, flavor-wise. Plus, the foam is a soft powder blue, not purple. BHK has been questing for it since mid-june.

Nice.. finally a word of the day I'd not heard before!

Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road when she sees a big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.

"My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf."

The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush.

"My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf."

Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.

About two miles down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.

"My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf."

With that the wolf jumps up and screams, "Will you knock it off, I'm trying to poop!"

If I were to have a headstone, I wouldn't mind having this on it.

I'd like to go see The Awakening before it's moved.

Nice night tonight - dinner in with the in-laws... BHK made hot dogs, mac & cheese, and some darn tasty sweet potato fries! nom nom nom.

I have a lot more energy today - I wonder if it's the cooler weather?

EcoFluxx arrived! Funny thing is that it originated in Greenbelt, flew overseas to the UK, and then returned to us! It's logged more air miles than I have in the last year or three. Thanks Eryx!!!

Let's see... to recap the weekend -

Friday - Gem show was fairly nifty... I got to fool with a $109,000 aquamarine stone, and ate some tasty dessert with the in-laws and BHK.

Positives : Played with Rocks, Tasty food, Obtained a little knowledge on Lapidary, Got some ideas about what to get BHK as presents, Rock Cutter reminded me of Todd, discovered "sno cone" cut

Negatives: 4-5 hours is too long in a folding chair, Mouthy lady across from me, Had to wear nice clothes, heavy rain, we were tardy, I notice occlusions and stone flaws too easily, BHK low blood sugar, Newt accidentally in the walk-in closet the whole time we were gone.

Final Score: More win than fail. If I had to do it again I wouldn't complain, but would plan for uncomfy chairs a bit.

Saturday - We were going to spend a little time doing chores and then go to the flyball tourney with Amy and her sisters, but got sidetracked after we were invited to breakfast with Larry and Chris. Post Bob Evans, we got the tickle to pick up our copy of Zombie Fluxx at Aardvark in Solomon's.... That sort of turned in to a family trip to BJ's Wholesale with the in-laws, once they heard we were heading south for a moment. Larry And Chris suffered a little bit from sensory overload at Aardvark's, but we were in and out quickly. Just fast enough to grab our ZF and go. I found out that they don't carry warhammer minis, but instead do war machine. I wonder if Eryx and his crew mix and match figures, or if they're purely WH? Once we got to BJ's, a quick trip for some tires for Larry's car turned into Shop-o-rama 2007. BHK and I picked up a few things that we needed, Halloween candy for the kiddies, and two wonderfully discounted wii games ($20 each) - Rampage and Ninjabread Man. Chris decided to play Santa, and bought our cart of goodies as well as their own!

While grocery Shopping, we found some Theme Chocolate -

1027071817.jpg

Sexual Chocolate I've heard of... Forgiveness? interesting. Tranquil and Renew... what happens if you eat all of these at once?

On our way south, there was a trailer on the side of the road hawking flowers, apples and baked goods. By the style of dress, I thought at first that one of the vendors was Amish, but on evaluation of the trailer, she must've been Mennonite - Horses would've had a tough time pulling the thing, but a truck hitch would be fine. Also went to the post office, and got Danny's Anniversary Present, and a Fluxx card "Zombies Eat Brains" promo... you use it in the standard deck, but has a Zombie theme, to be sure (The player who has Death on the table wins if the Brain is on the table.) The Boxed version of HEY! That's My Fish! I was a cruel and heartless player, and beat BHK 3 out of 3 games. I fear my victories will grow fewer in number as we get more players - I'm much better with 4 penguins than with 2.

We also stopped off at Maerten's to get our wedding rings engraved - inside of mine will be "Wing To Wing" and BHK's will be "Oar To Oar", referencing Robert Frost's The Master Speed - last lines of which are:
Two such as you with such a master speed
Cannot be parted nor be swept away
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar.
The full poem is on my bio page here.

Positives: Zombie Fluxx obtained (Aardvark sold out and was on it's second order!), Hey! That's My Fish!, Free Candy, Free Wii Games, Free Houshold supplies, Social time with the in-laws, ginger snaps and apples, offer to teach me old school biscuit baking techniques.

Negatives: Delayed visit to Amy for a day, no chores done - will probably have to buckle down next weekend, a little skittish about not having my wedding ring

Final Score: BIG WIN! I really can't find much to complain about getting games, chocolate and a lot of good conversation and giggles out of a Saturday. Tried Ninjabread Man, and the controls are tricky, but not bad once you're used to 'em. I bet Bugah will be quite good at it.

Sunday (Today) - I slept in until 10:30! I never sleep that late, but it must've been quite needed.

BHK and I hustled out the door to visit with Amy before she headed back for New York - got to give a friendly wave and offer support. We didn't ge tto eat together, but BHK and I took in some gorgeous weather, and went for pizza at 3 brothers - Sicilian with ricotta and garlic, BHK got meatballs on the side. Really, really good. Enough left over for dinner and for me to take to work tomorrow for lunch... and for BHK to have a nibble for lunch, too.

Stopped in Annapolis to look at couches at Jennifer's to replace the pink Torquemada-inspired beasties on the living room wall. Some solid, affordable options there... most light at the end of that tunnel yet. Nothing totally sings, but we have a few ideas about what to do now.

ATW man changed to Spidey for Halloween!

1028071753.jpg. 1028071755.jpg

I dig his boots.

We got home and flopped in front of the TV in the treehouse, caught up with The Office, Earl, and Midnight.... and just enjoyed snuggles with Newt in bed. Chris called to invite us over for Veggie soup, but I was too pooped out to get dressed and head over there. They understood, and BHK worked our way downstairs to catch up with some of the Ugly betty and cake making challenge video we had saved there - got sleepy, and we hit the sack shortly thereafter.

Positives: walkabout, moon pies on the road with diet cranberry splash, super good pizza, maybe a new couch soon, offered Amy a chance to come visit, ATW man, Further along on couch search, lots of nice time with BHK.

Negatives: The day was too short!

Final Score: Solid win. Comfy, Autumnal, lovey day.

BHK got me a Wii for our anniversary! I spotted it pretty much as soon as I sat down in the living room.
My Wii Code is 2667 2084 2657 3823. Get your own WiiBadge at WiiBadge.com!
Our online Number is 2667-2084-2657-3823 if any Wii peeps would like to add us.  Leave your wii number in the comments if you'd like me to add you!

Now I just have to find a game to play online with Bugah, since it seems the sports game that comes with it doesn't go online multi-player. So far, I'm very good at baseball - terrible at tennis. BHK is excellent at bowling.

Also via BHK - PSA -Dogs in Danger - Stuff like this breaks my heart. (Dogs in Danger is a nonprofit national shelter outreach program at the forefront of a grassroots movement trying to help shelters save the lives of millions of innocent dogs.) I honestly can't stay on that page very long - it makes me too sad.

Happy Birthday, Peradouro!

I had no idea that Batroc the leaper was a play on Batrachia, - I feel like a bit more of a copy cat with my old super "Grenouille" now.

Speaking of Marvel - Beaucoupkev's got me wanting to pick up a used copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance now.

It's got MODOK for corn sakes. I can only hope it also has Arnim Zola.

Zombie Fluxx will be waiting for us by Thursday! (And Aardvark has a demo pack coming, too! Hooray for spreading the fun around in the store!)

Transformers is out on DVD today - we'll add it to the Netflix queue - even if it's terrible, I'd like to check it out. I make a lousy robot.
but BHK's cracks me up.
When people walk with change jingling in their pockets, I imagine that they're wearing spurs.

Local Gamers are into Autoduel? I may need to investigate this further. BHK and I could spend some time getting up to speed, and maybe play some pyramid games soon, too.

From Eat for a week - corn soup (not like we need it right now... BHK makes wonderfully portioned meals - we tend to stretch it for at least half a week anyhow!)
