Tricycle's Daily Dharma:
The Theory of Karma

The theory of karma should not be confused with so-called "moral justice" or "reward and punishment." The idea of moral justice, or reward and punishment, arises out of the conception of a supreme being, a God, who sits in judgment, who is a law-giver and who decides what is right and wrong. The term "justice" is ambiguous and dangerous, and in its name more harm than good is done to humanity. The theory of karma is the theory of cause and effect, of action and reaction; it is a natural law, which has nothing to do with the idea of justice or reward and punishment. Every volitional action produces its effects or results. If a good action produces good effects and a bad action bad effects, it is not justice, or reward, or punishment meted out by anybody or any power sitting in judgment on your action, but this is in virtue of its own nature, its own law. This is not difficult to understand. But what is difficult is that, according to karma theory, the effects of a volitional action may continue to manifest themselves even in a life after death.

Tonight, BHK and Amy picked me up after almost being squashed like bugs with hair in ponytails by the Father-in-law's poorly planned car-moving scheme. Fortunately, they were neither compressed under tons of steel and rubber, nor were they kneecapped by a renegade trailer careening off into the next world. I think that if the MiL finds out, poor FiL is going to get quite an earful.

We journeyed off to the Giant-man store (no relation to Hank Pym ) and I got a 2 pair of Deer Stags, one in brown and one in black. That should take care of wardrobe for a bit. They seem pretty comfortable - I hope they last a bit longer than my usual wear and tear.

After that, BHK, Amy and I all went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - linked, in case you haven't heard of it, dear journal. Taken on its own, I liked it. Of course, when I read the book, I thought it was in dire need of editing, and parsing it down to a movie script seems to have done a good job of trimming the fat. My biggest complaint is that it seems that the thespian playing Hermione has forgotten most of her acting lessons.

Off to Johnny Rockets for burger and fries - I like that they'll do any of the stuff they have in a boca burger. It's seldom that I can get a double cheeseburger with the works when I'm out. Bonus - Movie stubs got us 20% off the bill. Bigger bonus - Amy paid the bill!

Yesterday, we unpacked a few things from the Salem house, including BHK's old yearbook from 4th grade, and a lot of her drawings circa 5-yrs old, 10 yr old and points in between. I'm glad we got to keep 'em.

It rarely fails to surprise how much music can energize me. Thanks again for the summer mix, Matt!

I meant to mention yesterday that Cyn's house is lovely... I especially like the location. Highest spot in the town, I suspect, and very private. Her art is there throughout, but it doesn't clutter - all of it is placed in a nice way. I also got a chance to meet her daughter, who is as friendly and charming as her mom.

Fooling with nationstates again - this time it's Salmagundia. (Newtonia has faded from the map)

Mr. Tawky Tawny just killed a guy with a stick! (he also sleeps in the nude.)

Mm.. I'd forgotten that I have a broadcast plugin on my winamp that shows my most recently listened to tracks. You can tell that BHK has influenced my listening habits a bit. (Plus, there's stuff on there that I've grabbed for her use, too.)

I'm glad to see the Devil has got his due. - But I think that I prefer Famous Poems Rewritten as Limericks

The Raven

There once was a girl named Lenore
And a bird and a bust and a door
And a guy with depression
And a whole lot of questions
And the bird always says "Nevermore."

Amy arrived! i was surprised to hear that she was in Baltimore by 8:30a - She must've left New York at about 5-5:30. We had a lovely dinner at Friendly's, helped the in-laws move boxes from the u-haul truck, and got in a game of super munchkin before bed. BHK pulled out a win at the very last minute, when it looked like I had it all wrapped up. Nicely played, hon!

One of the weirder aspects of Edgewater, MD. There's a store called ATW hardware that always has an unusual manikin tableau on the roof. This time, a Hunter Thompson-esque Zombie torments a pirate with an angry rat. It was hard to get shots at that range at twilight, but I think they look ok at full size.

Other ones have been rows of legs sticking straight up from the roof, a man and son fishing, and a chorus line.

oh! I do - from my first week of honeymoon! hard to see, but the leg-up one... can click for bigger. Taken when I was one day into being married. (It'll be nine months tomorrow)

Best word about current media frenzy - Potterdämmerung. That is *perfect*. I figure that I'll get around to reading it eventually, but I'll blaspheme by using the public library (or if BHK wants to own a copy, I'll read hers when she's done.) I don't really care who lives or who dies, but I am interested in seeing how it all wraps up. I'm almost more interested in knowing what the "next big thing" will be, now that this is essentially all over; not counting the remaining movies, spin-offs, comics and whatnot.

We had a nice, luxuriously casual post-party day.

Originally, we intended to brunch with Cyn, but it seems that Joss doesn't have a Sunday brunch... besides, we're all sleepyheads anyhow. (Plus, Cyn was shaking off the effects of her prior-night's festivities.)

Instead, we opted to head to the new Jasper's (sort of a Bennigan's-type place), and munch some lunch. It was a mixed bag, but mostly good, I think. The bar area has 12 hypnotically eye-attracting TVs... even if just golf is showing on-air. I was more distracted by the pseudo-southwestern-indian rhino-sculpture with the bright red tail. Unfortunate choice of color for that region, as Cyn's first thought was urzbeeubvq, and mine was nany svfghyn. Hover over the text or use rot-13 to translate.

Apparently whenever we three get together, there's a common conversational theme that tends to crop up. I will not be linking to the terms Filthy Sanchez, Tony Danza, Cleveland Steamer, Dutch Oven or Satchmo... but if you do search for them, I'll just say it's not safe for work. (see the prior paragraph's last six words or so for a starter concept.

The food varied in quality - the veggie burger was probably my favorite, after the sweet potato. Crab dip was not the best, and that's going to be tough for 'em, given that this is crab country. The partner visited our table and asked how everything was.... and we gave a lot of compliments and a fair amount of criticism. I think that he appreciated our input, and that they'll do very well.

Since I haven't uploaded the rhino picture yet, here's a honeymoon photo of me in touristy-black socks & shorts, golfing with a gorilla, and BHK being beautiful in St. Augustine. I love that pic of her... it just makes me smile every time I look at her.

DSCN1468 DSCN1598

BHK and I watched Apocalypto across three houses, due to assorted cat-sitting duties for Tigger, Kiki and Chai - and polished off the last of it in our living room while munching on leftover party food. I really liked it. The story was really secondary to the setting and activity inside. The costume designer did a phenominal job, and if you get the dvd, check out "the making of" section. There were some moments that could've been scripted better, but the visuals were absolutely beautiful. I really liked that all of the actors were unknown to me - it made it much easier for me to take the characters as they were, rather than "that's the Rock, and Robin Williams, and Robert DeNiro!" Definately the best art direction that I can remember seeing in a film recently.

We never did get around to playing lunch money or Chez goth - we'll learn with Amy tomorrow! (if she doesn't prefer to play pirates, or video games) - I hear she's got a giant shark to trot out for our next battle.

New games BHK and I have or will be getting in the near future, in a loose order of when we'll be playing 'em:

(I've also started a freebie account at superdupergames - mainly to try out online ice house sprawl - maybe BHK will start hitting it like we did with pente.net lots of stuff to choose from!)

Went with BHK to visit Amy and her family at a nearby flyball event. The dogs were adorable and seemed to be having a really good time. Strange to see an event with such a wide variety of breeds.

Stumbled across Woodbine (at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield, Maryland on Liberty Road (Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward halfway to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). This was the original trail that existed before the National Road was built (the road that runs through Lisbon).

Rebel calvary crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and at Hoods Mill, just a few miles eastward on the river and the B&O Railroad scouting the Union Army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of the existing road and up the west side of a creek that runs south and that joins with the Patapsco River just 100 yards west of the existing road. That original road, now partly unused runs north 100 yards from the river and then eastward to join up with the existing road today. There was no bridge at that time, just a ford in the river.

The town straddles the Patapsco River both north (into Carroll County) and South (into Howard County). In the 1920s and 1930s the town had a large canning factory on the Carroll County side of the river . There was another small canning factory, from the turn of the century, run by water power west of Woodbine at the foot of New Port Hill. Remains of the factory still exist and the sluice where water came to run the machinery is still visible in the wooded area below New Port Hill leading north to the dam, no longer existing.

Just north 300 yards and west of the existing road was a wormseed distillery, where wormseed oil was steam-distilled during the 1930s and 1940s; this small factory was later converted into a tomato and corn canning factory.

Quickie - Spent the bulk of today at work prepping for the grand opening of the tiki bar. (Cyn sums it up nicely here)

Speaking of Cyn, she gave us Loreena McKennitt tickets for Tuesday! Too bad Kev isn't nearby.. he'd love to go.

BHK feeling under the weather last night – tucked in early. I tried to get work done, but that DNS issue horked those plans but good. Upside, she’s feeling mucho better now, so our trip to visit Amy should still be AOK.

I’m going to be attending a seminar on metallurgy and geological studies with BHK, CB, LB, TM and the spaghetti lady. (ie: Some party being held for VIPs from the jewelry store) All of the aforementioned came over to our house last night for pasta, and to watch Borat and Matchstick Men. Food was good, and the movies were fun (Matchstick Men was interestingly acted, though predictable, plotwise).

DRAGON and DUNGEON to Cease Publication - The license with Wizard of the Coast is being allowed to lapse, by mutual agreement. WotC will be moving to an online model of providing D&D material, but further details are unavailable. While I haven't been fond of Paizo's product and haven't read either magazine in years, it's kind of sad to see these magazines go. The last issues will be cover dated September 2007. I really liked that in the old days there were all kinds of fun game inserts, like snit's revenge.

Unlocked all of the “utilities” in WTF – still about 5 games left to go.

Breakfast with Tina, and then Amy, Bhk and I went to Annapolis again, this time, we saw Ghost Rider! It was a fun movie, if weak in a lot of areas. Good job of camp + comic-book scary. I made the same observations to BHK that [livejournal.com profile] graypumpkin did here, where he also recounts the bizarre synchronicity between north beach an austin life.

Tonight is the sleepover with Amy and Tina!

After a long comedy of errors catching up with Tina-bo-beena, we finally arrived at the HQ to watch Jackass 2 of all things. It was funny, in a sort of "what the heck kind of nimrods" kind of way... but I did like a few of the sight gags a bit.. the boxing-glove valentine in particular was pretty dang funny.

We went to Annapolis and walked around a bit - saw the Alex Haley Monument, and window-shopped at a few stores. We intended to see Ghost Rider today, but our timing was off. However, Sushi at Joss makes everything better. Even mo' betta' was that Amy surprised us and bought supper!

Some photos from Annapolis - Aforementioned Haley Monument, dogma graffiti, state capitol, Ducks, and sundry other sights.

Amy Visited tonight - late and waited a long time... Tina and the folks couldn't catch up but we had yummy mac and cheese, made with basil ziti and mixed stuff (spinach and tomato) I highly recommended eating bhk's mac & cheese. it's goo-ood!
