It's looking like this is the camera I'll be getting. (at the $284 price)

I want something nice to take piccies during time off and walkies, and I think this is up to the task (I hope!) Fortunately, I have rechargeable batteries already, due to the palm, so all I'll end up getting extra is maybe a 64 meg compact flash card.

There's a lot of photographers out here... anyone care to give me any warnings or advice before I dive into this decision? I think my research is pretty good, but who knows... perhaps I forgot something.

Camera will be my Christmas Prezzie to self, and a new Bicycle for my birthday... a nice combination, I think. I'm look forward to showing pictures of the pompano Cemetary, the strip mall of sin, the mall of the dead and Miss Cleo's house off!

I've stayed away from Ireland for that specific reason.....

From someone who has used many cameras...

It's hard to go wrong with Canon. I don't have a lot of experience with their digital cameras or regular cameras, but I can say that they digital video and video cameras are superb. They are of good quality, high durability, and when I've needed tech support with their cameras they've been excellent.

Currently in the company, we are using Sony PC-5's and TRV-66's (which are old, now) and we are quite pleased with Sony as well.

Canon's cat's meow right now is the XL-1, which I would love to have, but at the thousands-of-dollars price tag it's not something you'd want to drag into a swamp with you.

Still, to this date, my favorite surveillance, every-day-use camera was my Canon ES6000.

So. Suffice to say, *I* am a Canon fan.

Canon makes pretty good cameras, or so I hear. If you haven't come across it already, though, you might check out the Kodak DX36000, which is a slight update on my own camera that I believe has an optical zoom. The plus side of these Kodak cameras is that they use their own nickel-metal hydride batteries, which are a step below Lithium in power storage but still don't have the "memory" problem that NiCads do (your typical rechargable).

Hmm. here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005R8TR/) is a link to the camera I would recommend for mid-range, with the camera dock packaged alongside. The camera dock allows you to plop your camera on this small-ish stand and have automatic recharging and downloading of pictures take place. THAT is damned nifty. The original (solo) camera comes with 2 AA Lithium batteries. Not only that, but the Kodak DX3xxx line (at least the 3500 and 3600) have 2.2 megapixel ratings, which are slightly better than the competition's 2.0 or 2.1 rating. Yeah, I know that it's really nitpicking over small things, but I tell you the DX3600 w/ Camera dock would be a much better buy than the Canon. Plus, for the huge price you'd pay for the Canon you'd get your own awesome rechargable battery pack and a nifty USB camera dock! :)

Best of luck with your purchase.

Oh yes! And the DX3600 allows you to capture digital video. I don't know the specs on that or how long the footage will last (probably not long) but it's a nice feature.

I really wish I'd waited for the 3600. It has an optical zoom, which mine doesn't, and DV (w/ audio) capability. How 'bout that?

Hmm. Forgot to mention one other feature. I don't know about the Canon, but the Kodak has a standard RCA video out jack so you can view a slide show on your TV and preview shots that way. I also don't know about the Canon's LCD, but the Kodak's is very very excellent.

hey, I have the A10 version!

they're right about the batteries. if you only use the display to look at pics after you've taken them (turn it off most of the time) it's not as bad. I've found that if you keep the pics at the smallest size possible, you get plenty of room on the card. and the larger sizes are jsut to big for journals, anyways, you just end up sizing down and croping anyways if you use the medium or larger sizes. finally, the zoom is really good.

it transferes to the computer really fast- I was impressed by how little time it takes to download the pics. but you need a different photo editing program. their softwear is kind of lacking for anything beyond transfering data from cam to puter and croping etc. finally, get a small padded carrier for it. I was just hauling it aorund by it's strap for a while, and the display window got a bit scratched (the A10 doesn't come with one, not sure about the A20, but it probably doesn't either).

can't wait to see pics :-) I should use mine more often, I know.
