Date: 2001-11-06 02:51 am (UTC)Were you in an area hard-hit by Andrew? What other storm(s) have you experienced up-close and personal?
Curious DorkGirl!

Date: 2001-11-06 06:40 am (UTC)It's nice to have warning...you'd be surprised how many bull-headed folk don't evacuate when asked to, though. I've seen more water damage than wind... mud filled houses and such.
I'm flattered that you're interested! Many earthquakes in your icy realm?

Date: 2001-11-07 01:52 am (UTC)I've always been fascinated by all weather phenomena, particulary the huge, dramatic storms that the oceans can churn up. Part of that is probably due to my inherent weather-geekiness, and the other due to not experiencing those kinds of storms in my area. We're so far inland that our storms are not nearly so dramatic as they are along the coasts. I'd love to spend a winter out in the Aleutians someday, or in Whittier, AK, to experience some of the wildness of those coastal storms. Maybe one winter would work it all out of my system! =)
Alaska is definitely earthquake-central. We have 11% of all the world's quakes, so I've been through my fair share. Again, they're more plentiful and stronger along the coasts, so the largest I've experienced personally is a 6.4 in 95. We had a 5.8 last winter that was fun, too. There have been 3 quakes of magnitude 7 or greater within 50 miles of Fairbanks in the last 100 years, so I'm ready for a big one to roll through any time. I love experiencing them, save for the destruction they're sure to cause others. It's not terribly difficult in our society to prevent serious injury or death from a quake, so I just hang on and enjoy the ride, and the reminder that the earth below my feet is very much alive!
Yes, I'm officially a freak. *laugh*
