Cool... I had no idea that the U.S. can selectively disable civilian GPS signals in specific areas (thereby preventing things like our enemies from using our satellites to move their troops). Makes sense.

I used to sell GPS's at E&B Marine, and I was working there at the time when they changed the civilian band GPS to be military accurate. I thought it was fantastic, but I asked the rep about this very thing and was told about the regional disabling. This was 6+ years ago, and I didn't even remember till you mentioned this. Thanks.
I took a day-long course on GPS about 5 years ago, and learned this and many other fascinating things about it. It's really a great system...and has such wonderful flexibility built into it, as you learned today.
Now, if only my dad'll give me his hand-held unit for Christmas. =)
