factoid about scotto -

I like to cook. I really enjoy making a tasty, filling meal... but not for myself. I like eating big yummy meals, but can't be bothered if I'm preparing it solo... mac and cheese or a tasty sammich will do the trick, and takes less prep and cleanup time. I wonder if that means I don't like cooking, so much as it means that I like to cook for other folks...does that mean I'm a show off, and not a chef? Some kind of low self-esteem? Maybe (and I suspect that this is the true reason) I get more pleasure from pleasing others than from pleasing myself in the same way. It doesn't have to be romantic...I'm happy feeding my buddy Dan (or making Newtie treats) as well as preparing my sweetheart a lovely candlelight dindin. The odd thing is, until I had this apartment I couldn't possibly do so... I actually dreamed of cooking for my sweetie last night, lasagna, salad, and low light, with all the romantic trappings.

yum.

What's for lunch?

fwiw, I'm the same way.

I never cook alone... but I love to cook for friends and loved ones.

It just doesn't make sense to cook for one in my case... I eat very little, really. A tasty sammich or individual french-bread pizza would do just fine most times.

oh, I can eat a lot, but it's still simpler to make a pot of mac& cheese or 2 sammiches than a tossed salad and a pan of lasagna. :)

You'll find most people to be the same way, Scotto. I cooked all the time for everybody when I was up at college. I even cooked an entire Passover Seder for one class I had, and organized and cooked in two *huge* chili cook-offs. It wasn't a contest, really, just an excuse to spend school funds! Mine was SO yummy! Sometimes I crave it myself, but cook a huge pot of chili for one person?

I haven't cooked a thing since I left, though. Cooking for one takes a whole lot of skill. You have to look at cooking in an entirely different way. I assume there are cookbooks called "Cooking For One". I bet those would give you some great ideas for single portion meals that aren't too much of a chore.

For me, I make romantic dinners a few times a week. Pretty dishes and elaborate foods and nice wines and candlelight and such. I loooove to cook though, and I'm all atmospherically oriented.

I'm pretty much the same way. If it's just me I can live with a plateful of vegetables or a can of soup.
When there are others around I'll cook up a mess of fixin's.

I'll repeat what everyone else already said - you aren't the only one like that. I love cooking dinner for others, or when its just me and my hunny. But if he isn't home for dinner, I'm cracking open the mac + cheese or frozen pot pies just like everybody else. :)

I don't think it means you are a show off. I enjoy cooking more if I am doing it for others(I don't like to cook very much.) It seems when I cook the meals, the food isn't as good as when someone else makes it even if it is the exact same thing made the exact same way.....so if I am just making it for myself..why bother. am I making sense? sometimes I can't tell.

anyway, if it is just me I eat cereal or a sandwich.
