TV Blamed For Creating Black Fatties
=================================
If you flip on a television show popular among African Americans,
you're likely to see far more overweight characters and junk food ads than
on programs geared to a general audience,a new study finds.
And the researchers say the content of "black prime time" may
negatively influence what African Americans eat.

I know some people who were doing similar research. It seems there are more fast food restaurants in predominantly African-American neighborhoods than the average.
Not only that - the menus tend to differ.

It is also related to 'feel good' food.

Fried foods and foods with fat content (is that an oxymoron of sorts) tend to make one feel better.

So do mashed potatoes and gravy.yum

I wonder how much of that is market driven?

That's the question.

???

Like I said - its feel good food.

These people were behavioral psychologists.
They had or were trying to get a grant to change eating behavior in order to curb obesity.

I'm not sure what I think of all of that.

Too true... I like the idea of researching behavior, and doing some mods to help a community.. as long as the community knows about it, and condones the improvement.

Yes. I think what bugged me the most is that some of them were the stereotypical elitist adademic types. It annoys me when people put themselves on a higher plain.
Just a pet peeve.

understandable peeve! I don't imagine they'd like it if roles were reversed..

I don't think that even enters their minds. Otherwise they wouldn't be that way?

Working in the environment I do makes me a bit jaded.

Don't get me started about DOCTORS!

Where I grew up, the joke was, "Yeah, there's no mistake that there's a liquor store on every corner in our 'hood." It was funny ... until I actually stopped to think about it.
