I want LJ to keep a cookie on me, to remember just where I left off reading.

maybe special marker on my friend's page? then I can read from there, chronologically forward, instead of catching news backwards through time...

shold be pretty easy to have a hot spot on each entry that you can hit, setting the bookmark to that entry. Of course that's something you have to do actively, but it would make sure you are positioned precise to the last entry.
