What is a "menstrual hut"? I thought it was a little house where women went (or bathed?) when they were menstruating because they were "unclean". Is that true? If so, I don't like it. If not, then please disregard this message (except maybe to tell me what a menstrual hut really is).

That's part of it... but not all of it.. the idea is to be a celebration of femininity, and to share observations on the same.

Well, you're actually right. Menstrual huts started out as a place where women had to go, because they were considered to be unclean by society. But what if we still *did* have them?? I think it'd be pretty cool...I'd love to get away from things for once a month...and I'm sure that the ladies who went to those huts long ago, probably looked forward to it too, because it got them away from their everyday duties...no cooking, no screaming kiddies, no cleaning, no doing things for "the man."

I think this community is not to "shun" women or pronounce them unclean, but to to provide a voice and a reprieve about an issue that is unavoidable in our lives.

Really, a lot of ladies have joined up. I think it's great that there is a man out there that understands these kind of things, instead of the usual ignorant responses they might give. ;o)

That's what I thought. But I guess I wasn't clear. I didn't mean that I didn't like the idea of a community, or that I didn't like Scottos's interest. I just don't like the name.
If I ever saw Scotto display anything other than a deep affection for and understanding of women, I would probably fall over, it is so far outside my realm of expectation.
Again, it was just the name... On the other hand, there is a lot to be said for taking posession of something that may be offensive to you and making it your own...
I think that what I don't like about the mestrual hut is the idea of being forced to be there. I would probably enjoy the break now and then too, but to be without a choice and "unclean" - don't like it.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, menstruation is a time of deep cleansing. Women are encouraged to avoid work and to take the time to cleanse, meditate and heal. It is considered to be an advantage over men in the that it is an opportunity to cleanse that men don't have. That sits better with me. I think it is the whole idea of being shunned that bothers me.
But what am I doing putting all of this here? I should probably join the community and put it there :)

Actually, "Menstrual Huts" are not of American origin. They were (and perhaps still are) used in many cultures where women were shunned from society during that their time of the month. I look at something like that as a refuge, because I don't know about you, but I sure would like a vacation every month in which I had no work to do, no responsibilities except to stay away, and just hang out with the girls.

The community is not even 24 hours old, and many folks have already joined, and the discussions are quite interesting.
