They're about the size of sesame seeds, they taste like nothing, and here's what they (reportedly) can do:

Good for preventing/treating endometriosis, constipation, and diverticulitis.

lubricates the blood vessels and helps to clear clogged arteries.

The National Cancer Institute has found that flax has an anti-cancer effect even to match some chemotherapeutic drugs -- but without any icky side effects.

Flax is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are good things. Scientific research has established that women who have the highest amounts of Omega-3 have the lowest incidence of breast cancer. Flax may also help prevent endometrial cancer, heart disease and strokes.

About a zillion other benefits are listed at

A note: drink lots of water with flax, or your bowel will wish you had.

Flax is way easy to work into your diet - I'm stubborn, and even I am finding it not too hard. Toss some in with rice while it's cooking, sprinkle em on a salad or peanut butter sandwich, or make flax seed crackers. They're yummy, and maybe you won't die of something horrible!

p.s. flax is slang for whore. true, ask webster.

perhaps i should tell my friend lianne that. her last name is flax. she is, however, far from a whore. in fact, she is nonsexual.

I get flax at the grocer, but I imagine a health food store would have it too. :)

Hmm, flax. If you can find a muffin recipe, try it! The local Starbucks (which was my only close-by coffee choice at the time) used to make the most delicious flaxseed muffins! It was a real treat to pick the seeds off the top and squoosh them between my teeth while desperately hoping

If you buy the seeds, be careful that they're pretty fresh, and refrigerate them. Like most nuts and seeds, apparently they go rancid -- I think they're still edible then but do acquire a funny smell.

Heh, I have a really varied appetite (sometimes none, sometimes ravenous) so if I must buy in bulk, I have to be careful about storage.

Oh, also... flaxseed can apparently be used for binding, serving the same function in baking as eggs. I don't know a lot about this, but a search engine would probably yield some interesting facts :)
