[Error: unknown template qotd]Chess. I love games, gaming, and just hanging out over a board with pieces on them... I'm quite good at checkers, pente, risk, miniatures wargaming (like car wars, Angriff!, OGRE or see icon of Danny playing Pirates), assorted icehouse and bar games, but...I simply stink at good ol' classic chess.

I'm generally better at tactics than strategy, but I just can't get an opening set of moves that is acceptable at all. I'm not sure why my skill with that particular game is so low - I suspect a mental block or some working of my brain just doesn't visualize the pieces as well.Geotarget

Chess, it's a tricky one. Never got very good at it myself.

But I do love the little figures. My painting skill (or lack thereof) has always been a hurdle. After I win the lottery I am going to hire a personal miniture painter.

After years of waiting in a box, I sold my Ogre collection - a nifty set of PanEuropean units with Ukranian colors - to a game club in Florida.

I haven't really done much with minis in a while - aside from using them as props for the RPG.

I like painting them, depending on the time available, but the hobby has changed to my enjoyment of playing rather than prep, these days. I'm envious of the game club! Both for having miniatures, rather than counters, and for actually playing OGRE!

Heroclix are mostly used as props for RPGs, I suspect, despite the game built in.

They are going to be releasing a new boxed version of OGRE soon, but, without minis.

One of my favorite mini games ever was a convention game with a multiplayer battle - ostensibly Nihon vs Combine forces, when in the middle of the scenario, the ref pulled out a to-scale Godzilla to rain havoc on both sides.

At first the Combine forces were winning but the Big Greenie came in and smashed them up but good. Ungratefully, the Nihon forces rallied, finished off their champion and won the day.

Here are his stats, courtesy of Pyramid Magazine. They also have rules for Rodan, Mothra, etc. Godzilla usually starts with 60 energy points which can be used to attack or heal. If he stays in a newly created radioactive crater, he gains back energy. His body points are like Ogre treads.

Attack
Breath Weapon 1 to 8, Range 3'' - 4" at half
strength, 8" vs Cruise Msl.
Can be used up to Energy Level.
Trample/Tail Attack 4, overrun combat only.
Can use once per fire round.

Defense
All attacks of less than 20 attack strength points
against him are rolled at 1-1 odds. Any single
attack of 20 or more points is rolled at 2-1 odds.
"D" results don't affect Godzilla.

60 Body Points Movement starts at 6"
ooooo ooooo (Movement drops to 5")
ooooo ooooo (Movement drops to 4")
ooooo ooooo (Movement drops to 3")
ooooo ooooo (Movement drops to 2")
ooooo ooooo (Movement drops to 1")
ooooo ooooo (Godzilla is dead!)

Energy
Total energy at start of turn _____pts.

Energy Reserve
Energy spent on Breath Weapon
1 attack strength = 1 energy _____pts.
Energy spent on healing
1 body point = 1 energy _____pts.
Energy absorbed +_____pts.

Total energy at end of turn _____pts.

Energy may be expended to heal body points at ANY point
in the turn, even between enemy attack rolls. An energy
reserve of zero has no adverse effect on Godzilla.
Godzilla may replenish his energy reserve in several ways.
