Amber Alert issued for missing Fort Lauderdale infant
FORT LAUDERDALE - An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday for a 4-month-old girl who was possibly abducted by a teenage acquaintance of her mother, police said.
The infant, Mekai Brown, weighs about 14 pounds and has curly hair, and was last seen wearing a yellow dress and white socks, said Detective Katherine Collins of the Fort Lauderdale Police.
She may have been abducted by 15-year-old Kaniesha Black, an acquaintance of the infant's mother, Collins said.
Black had accompanied Felisha Slater, 19, to drop off Mekai at a baby-sitter's home late Wednesday morning before Slater's shift at a McDonald's, according to police.
Black allegedly returned to the baby-sitter's home around 1 p.m. and claimed Slater had told her to pick up Mekai, Collins said.
The baby sitter assumed Black was Slater's friend, because the two teens had been together earlier, but thought it was odd the 15-year-old did not take the diaper bag along with Mekai, Collins said.
Black had been depressed about the death of a relative earlier this week, Collins said.
"Her family said she is bipolar and off her medication," Collins said. "She was dirty, unkempt and, according to Felisha, she looked like she had been living on the streets."
Black is 5-foot-4 and was last seen wearing a tan shirt, blue cropped pants and blue shoes, according to police.
